Mai-Hime (My HiME) - Tokiha Mai 1/6 figure by Max Factory

MaakieMaakie7 months agoReview
! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

! This is a review of a figure wearing a really short skirt, there are some pantyshots !

Also keep in mind this is a review of a 10+ year old scaled figure, so this will also be taken into account while reviewing.

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Tokiha Mai ENCYCLOPEDIA #3263 from Mai-Hime ENCYCLOPEDIA #186 ! This figure ITEM #112 is made by Max Factory ENCYCLOPEDIA #7622 .

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Mai-Hime (also written as My HiME), is an action-series with some ecchi and shoujo ai-elements. Multiple girls find thimselves with a mysterious mark on their body, telling them they have become an HiME. The HiME are all young females who need to protect the earth. They can summon an Child (big mechanical looking monsters) to fight against these Orpans attacking our planet.

Mai is a very caring and responsible girl, taking good care of her younger brother ever since their parents died. At first she is very scared of using her Child's powers. But as you would maybe expect, she turns out to become a great fighter.

The reason why and how I got her

I have a lot of good memories thinking back about Mai-Hime and it's following up series My Otome. It was one of the first anime I have bought on DVD. In the last almost 10 years I have been collecting a lot of figures and merchandise from Mai-Hime and this figure was no exception. I remember buying her secondhand from a local anime forum.

Original art

It is very clear that the lower body design for this figure was taken from this piece of artwork:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/07/My-HiME_team.jpg

As for her upper body design...I actually don't remember Mai sticking up her thumb like that anywhere during the series? But there is one other character very well known for lifting her thumb in the air... View spoilerHide spoiler

The Box

Mai's box is so big that it doesn't even fit in my photography corner! Enjoy the looks of my crafts/storage room.

The box has some very big windows, giving you a good look at the figure. All sides of the box show pictures of the finished figure. There are also a few licensing stickers on the back, such as one from Sunrise. As far as I know, no bootlegs were made from this figure.

The figure comes in one big piece in the blisters. Mai can be removed from her base, but it requires quite some force. I wouldn't recommend it.

The Figure

Important note before the start of this review: This figure was bought secondhand, displayed for multiple years and then stored for multiple years. There are quite some damages/defects which I think are a combination of age and possibly also storage. I would also like to hear the input of other owners of this figure of how their copy aged.

The first thing you will notice when you own her is that she is huge. She's at 1/6 scale and almost 30CM high including her base! Her total height will make her tower above most of the average figures.

Another thing that stands out is the movement of this figure, especially in her hair, scarf and skirt. It really makes you feel like she is standing (or floating?) somewhere very high up. Having said that, if this figure had Mai's attacking rings around her ankles and wrists, it would have been perfect.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Maakie1345574720.jpeg

Here is a quick size-comparison with other Mai-Hime figures. Kotobukiya's Mai ITEM #1237 is an 1/7 a bit over 20CM in height. CM's Corporation's Natsuki and Mai together ITEM #938 are very small, around 12-13CM.

Looking at all the details!

A real eyecatcher is Mai's energetic and happy expression! There is a lot of detail in her eye decals. Her eyebrows are very neatly sculpted and painted. Her mouth however, can look a bit weird from some angles.

Mai's hair has a lot of wefts and movement.

I like how you can see from the side that Mai has a part of her hair tucked away with an hair clip.

On the top you can see a small scuff/painting error. At this point I don't know if it's an manufacturing error or maybe a small damage she got from her previous owner.

Mai's hair is shaded with a very nice gradient, with a wide range of orange colors that seem to be airbrushed on.

Maybe your attention was already drawn to it, but my copy of this figure has a small crack in her hair, you can see it in the middle. It is not very noticeable, unless you look at the figure from up-close. My guess is that this damage is due to age (with the PVC shrinking), but it could also be that her previous owner damaged her and I simply did not notice (or forgot about) this defect, as this figure was in storage for multiple years.

The back of her head shows again how many layers they have sculpted in her hair. How the tips round off is also very good for a figure her age.

Another eye catcher of this figure is Mai's long scarf. As you can see here, the sculpt of the scarf is a bit basic, but it does it's work well.

Both the scarf and the tassels at the ends of the scarf could have gotten more detailing. Kotobukiya's Mai (released around the same time) ITEM #1237 , has way more detailing at the scarf.

The sculpt of Mai's right hand is quite nice. The fingers have some individual movement and there is some shading painted.

A downside is that you can see some weird specks of brown-ish paint. At first I was scared and thought it was mold, but I couldn't get it removed with the usual cleaning methods. I think they are painting errors from the shading, as it also looks like the shading in the hair was airbrushed, also leaving some 'specks' here and there.

The white line on Mai's jacket is not completely clean. The jacket itself has some good looking shading at the parts with creases, making it look even more tight-fitting.

Another defect to point out here is near the armpit of her left arm, there is a piece of paint missing there. There is also some leftover PVC from the cast near the bottom-right of her jacket. These are some defects that have always been on this figure and don't depend on age. A lot of my older figures have small defects like this.

Mai's skirt is very nice, as it shows a lot of movement and wrinkles! It actually makes my legs feel a bit cold looking at it!

Also at the back Mai's skirt has some awesome details going on with the pleats.

Her jacket also shows some shading details on the backside, with especially her shoulderplates heavily shaded to stand out more. You can also see some more shading at her arms, especially at the jointed parts.

Her left hand has a nice sculpt too. Interesting to point out is that no fingernails were sculpted on this figure. A detail they would rarely skip on nowadays, as I've even seen a lot of prize figures with sculpted fingernails recently.

Another important detail in the character design and sculpt are the legs for days Mai has. Even more accentuated by the tiny skirt she wears.

This is also the only part of this figure where the skin is slightly shiny. Shiny skin was something very common on older figures. Interesting is how the back of the legs have more shine than the front of the legs. I think it's because the back has a lot less shading, so they also painted less skin tone? Most of the times shiny skin is caused by not painting the PVC.

You can see Mai wears simple white panties, which is canon for this character. You can see a few creases at the back.

At the front the panties show a lot more detail, with many creases and a small sewed line in the panties.

The front of Mai's legs show a lot more detail, especially with the shading around her knees.

Got to love how her behind is almost bursting out of her panties! Although I have some doubts if this was intended in the sculpt or not.

Summary or tl;dr

Positive
- A huge figure, definitely worth your money!
- Nice shading on the skin and in her hair.

Neutral
- Some parts have been detailed very 'basic' such as the scarf and clothes.

Negative
- There are quite some painting errors.
- My copy of this figure has discoloration and even a crack on the figure itself. There is a high chance this is because of the age of the figure, so watch out when you buy this one!

The Scores

Sculpting 7/10
Even for an older figure, the sculpt is a bit too basic here and there. There are also some very nicely sculpted parts, I especially like her skirt and hair.

Painting 8/10
The painting has it's errors at some points, but I really admire all the work they have put into shading her. It looks especially good on her skin.

Posing 8/10
For such a simple pose, it's nice that they went through the effort of showing some movement in the skirt, scarf and hair. It really adds to this figure.

Base 7/10
It's a very simple off-white base that holds the figure well. As a plus, it's pretty small.

Packaging 7/10
Just like the figure being huge, the box is also huge. The design of the box is a bit basic, only showing pictures of the finished figure.

Enjoyment 7/10
As a big fan of the Mai-Hime and Otome, I was very pleased at first to add such a big Mai figure in my collection. Unfortunately she is a bit too basic looking for my tastes to have kept her as a part of my Mai-Hime/Otome collection when it got bigger. I did really appreciate her when she was in there and I got her for a good price, which is why I still rate this figure pretty high on the enjoyment scale.

Conclusion

If you are a big fan of Mai-Hime or Mai as a character, this is definitely a solid figure of her, with her main plus this figure being so huge! If you don't care about the size or rather have a smaller and more detailed figure of Mai, ITEM #1237 is probably a better choice. If you don't know much about this character or franchise, I guess it's better if you skip this figure. Even though this figure is absolutely not bad, she is also not extremely special. By the way, if you are reading this and haven't seen Mai Hime or My Otome, definitely give them a watch! Mai-Hime may seem a bit generic at first, but there is quite a lot of heavy drama later on packed with a good soundtrack! My Otome is a big recommendation from me if you're into action series with a nice dose of fantasy. Most fun is to watch them right after eachother!

Availability

This figure occasionally pops up at second hand shops. She had a release price of ¥6.500, but I always see her for lower amounts at second hand stores. On average I see her selling for around ¥4.000. Keep in mind she will have high EMS shipping costs because of her size, so maybe you are better off buying her secondhand from a local collector than from a Japanese shop.

And to finish it!

Recently I have sold this figure, but here is how I used to display her in my small Mai-Hime/Otome collection:

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Maakie1394899665.jpeg

At this point I am thinking about selling/trading all of my Mai-Hime figures and focus on collecting My Otome only. I especially love the costumes in My Otome, they also make up for a more varied collection.

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be about Kanbe Kotori's figure ITEM #90164 made by FuRyu.

Maakie (7 months ago) #20851008Hrmmm I think it would have been nice if the base was fully transparant or a transparant mixed with another color (blue maybe?). To have a more flying effect, such as ITEM #152 .
But I also get your point. If you end up owning this figure, painting a base is quite easy to do actually. So you could just change it to black or dark blue for example. :)

You're right about that. Painting is also a solution. :) But i guess a transparant base would look the best.

Rajke (7 months ago) #20711467Yes and No. The shape of the base looks nice and it looks like they really thought about that. I think (even if it wasn't yellowish) that the base would look better black. Also the socks of Mai accentuates the base in a bad way. With an uncolored white base in combination with the white socks the manufacturer created a 20% white looking part over the whole figure. The white centers in the lower half of the figure and because of that the socks and shoes don't stand out in combination with a white or yellowish base. In fact in this case i would choose for a darker colored base.

She is nowhere near perfect, but quite nice for a figure from this era. And what do you mean, that it's too yellow-ish in color?

Rajke (7 months ago) #20561553A very nice review. For a figure with this respectable age it looks quite good. The only thing that is too bad is the color of the base.

Thank you very much! :)

secretly-otaku (7 months ago) #20405792Uhhh, a blast from the past! Thank you very much for this review!
Hey, but Mai-Hime wasn't ecchi xP. I mean, there was some innuendo, lingerie fetish and some (really hot and steamy ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)) yuri, but it wasn't that bad. Now My Otome... really oldspoilerNina's daddy issues was a messed up element of the plot... but everything else was still likeable =3= (especially Arika's mommy xP).
Anyway, that Mai is really huge! And you can tell those 11 years have left a mark or 2. Still, she was looking good by the time you still had her. And I see you mentioned you kept her stored, but how long was it? That interest me since I have some figures I have kept stored for a year more or less and I'm worried that they may get damaged for being boxed too long.
It is also interesting to see how Koto was actually higher among figure companies back in the day when compared to Max Factory's efforts and how things are nowadays. I still think Koto makes really nice products today and aim at very diverse demographics, but they are definitely not as high in the figure industry like they were in the past.
And well, I also wish for the Mai-Hime concept to be used again. It may have been used during these almost 14 years here and there, but with so many shows being aired yearly, it's hard for me to tell and impossible to cover all of them. IMO, Mai-Hime was a nice twist of the magical girl genre, with cool familiars and a dash of angst xP. Let me tell you, if Mai-Hime would have ended up differently another really oldspoilerif only almost all of the girls would have stayed dead!, then the show perhaps would have been more popular. It definitely worked for Madoka, right? Anyway, I just want an excuse for companies to produce a hoard of Natsukis, Shizurus and Naos, just like we got so many Angelas, Hestias and (currently) Rems. This GK in particular ITEM #28585 deserves a pre-paint treatment. She is drop-dead gorgeous!

No problem! I'm glad to read I'm not the only one getting a lot of nostalgic feels thinking about Mai HiME and Otome! :)

That's why I said 'echhi elements'! :^) I mean there is quite some stuff that is high on fanservice there, lol. It's more 'visible things' in Mai HiME, while it's more relationships in My Otome. View spoilerHide spoilerAt least they were not blood-related... >.<

Hrmmm, I think it was about 3 or 4 years in storage? A very long time. Are yours sealed? Because then I don't think you need to worry about them. I think the 'problem' with this figure was that it was displayed --> stored for 1-2 years --> displayed --> stored for 3-4 years --> displayed again (not to forget that it was shipped with postal services at least 2 times and moved to a new place at least 3 times). As for the damages, I have no clue at this point if it's age, storage or damages from the previous owner... Still...considering her age, she looks quite okay? Although I own way older figures with a lot less damages (Koto's Mai for example).

Koto is one of my most favorite (if not the actual most favorite) figure manufacturers. They were the first guys to completely believe in Yu-Gi-Oh! (male) figures selling and I can't thank them enough for that. <3 I also love the Bishoujo-line and how that is going. They may not produce the highest quality when it comes to detailing, but they are a very interesting manufacturer for sure!

That was actually quite interesting and I haven't thought of it that way. Mai HiME sounds a bit like a Madoka-predecessor that way! And yeah I agree with you there View spoilerHide spoilerI despise it when anime series kill off half the cast to say not very long after 'surprise!' and have everyone living again...urghhh. Luckily a lot less anime do that nowadays, it was a big thing about 10-15 years ago when a lot of series were less...dark.

Just like HELDRIK below, I would have loved a Nao figure. She wasn't a huge character in the show, but quite a fan favorite (I know more Nao fans than Mai fans lol). You can see the GK circles realising that and having made a lot of GK's of her...but no prepainted or easily available ones!!

Heldrik (7 months ago) #20387490Oh Lord, just looking at that Mai and Natsuki Beach Queens figure leaning like this is painful.
View spoilerHide spoilerIt reminds me too much of the same one I used to own, that I had to get rid of since the leg broke. Truly a gut wrenching decision.
Now, back on topic, I was eagerly waiting for that review of yours. I must say it was worth the wait, that was a really nice and informatiove reading.
Mai HiME is very special for me, since it was the first anime I watched entirely (yeah, I'm a real late bloomer), a little more than ten years ago, along with Saint Seiya. Mai may not be my favorite HiME (Nao and Natsuki are) but she's definitely in my top 5. She's the almost perfect redhead waifu: hot body (and powers), awesome Child, sweet voice, great cooking skills, just the right amount of tsun tsun... What's not to like?
The first time I saw that figure, it was on a fansite that listed almost all (Garage Kits were not included, if my memory serves me well) the figs, and it was along with her Kotobukiya counterpart ITEM #1237 that I own. Back then, I wanted MF's version more because of that thumbs up and that nice reproduction of the artwork. A few months later, I stumbled upon Kotobukiya's in a convention. Since it was at a fair price, I ended up buying it because of said price, also because I liked that gradient hair as well as that pose, so full of assurance. To this day, I have no regrets, though I really think her fists shoukd be on her hips; also, it starts to lean a little, but thankfully there are ways to fix that.
Just like nikkoda, it's of of my goals to get GSC's Natsuki ITEM #354, though my real dream would be Grifon Enterprises' one because of her Element guns ITEM #355. She's a little expensive (though not that much, thankfully) so that's quite the dilemma, seeing as GSC's isn't...
Concerning Natsuki, one my main regrets is that she didn't have a non-GK scale of her inher biker outfit. I'd kill for a figure of Natsuki on her bike kinda like Arthuria's Motored Cuirassier. My other regret is that my favorite HiME Nao got some nice and awesome GKs, but jack shit when it comes to prepainted scale figures. Fuck that shit, seriously.
To end this long post, I just wanna say that you have an awesome and varied Mai HiME/Mai Otome collection.
View spoilerHide spoilerDammit Sunrise, just give us a third Mai series already!

Mine were leaning straight out of the box. That posing in combination with their horrible pegs...urgh. With yours the leg(s) even broke?! Wow!

Thank you for liking the review so much! It's really nice to hear. :) And sorry that I can be a bit slow, hehe.

Same, Mai is also not my favorite, but I always had some special feelings for her. I think it's because she is so sweet and caring for her brother. And her being in a more motherly role in My Otome.

Koto's Mai ITEM #1237 is a very well known leaner. Luckily I haven't noticed any leaning in my copy.

Why not both? :) Of course take your time and maybe buy one in a few weeks and another in a few months? A friend of mine has been hunting ITEM #1241 for years, if we're talking about rare Natsuki's, lol.

Nao indeed has some amazing GK's! Maybe you can acquire one someday and commission someone to paint her for you? :)

Haha, no problem! I'm happy to read someone being so enthousiastic about the Mai franchise so many years later! And as for a third series...I think Sunrise would rather do a reboot of the original series than a 3rd one, if they decide to continue with it. Anyway, any new content would really please me. :)

victorviper (7 months ago) #20350642Wow, I just looked at one of your photos of that pair PICTURE #670191 and that Tenshi figure looks downright gigantic next to Mai and Natsuki! From that photo, the two of them look like they are closer 1/12 in scale!

Yeah and that Tenshi figure is also already smaller than the average one!

The 'worst' comparison I guess is looking at PICTURE #947609 . Only a slightly bit bigger than my trading figures...

Keep in mind the posing of the figures also make them arch over a bit, but still they would be almost half of this Mai figure if they were standing upright. 1/12-1/11 indeed...
