ARTFX-J May & Mudkip (Kotobukiya)ARTFX-J May & Mudkip (Kotobukiya)

Attention, Nintendo fans! It is time for another figure review! Today I am reviewing a figure which I have been eagerly awaiting to be added to my Pokémon shelf since pre-orders opened last October. Today I am reviewing this super adorable figurine of May & Mudkip made by Kotobukiya.

This is the second figure in Koto's Pokémon figures in their ARTFX-J line of high-quality figures. The box is much like that of the first figure, Red & Pikachu. Its graphics are quite vibrant and cheery featuring images of the figure as well as the original illustration by Ariga Hitoshi. Click the images below to view them in full size.

Take them out of the box, set them up, and bam! They are set to take your Pokémon collection's cuteness to the next level.

First let's take a look at the adorable little Mudkip.
I Herd U Liek Mudkips

The Hoenn starters are my favorite starters in the series. Mudkip was actually the first Pokémon I chose when I got the original GBA games. Kotobukiya has excellently crafted this little rascal in seemingly flawless detail. Everything from the paint, texture and posing brings out the most of Mudkip's cuteness.

The little water effect adds a lot to Mudkip's presentation, but I was even more pleased with the simplicity and efficiency of how to connect Mudkip to this effect piece.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1494851695.jpeg

All you have to do is gently insert its tail into this little hole here and the tip of the tail wedges up against the inside of the hole. No amount of pressing of forcing it in is needed.

Now let's take a look at May, the female avatar character. This figure of May features her outfit from Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, the 2014 3DS remakes of Ruby & Sapphire for the GameBoy Advance.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1494850579.jpeg
I absolutely love the pose they chose for this figurine. This dynamic and energetic pose perfectly captures May's peppy personality. You see her in this pose and you know exactly what she is saying. "Come on! It's time to start our amazing Pokémon adventure! We can accomplish anything as long as we believe in ourselves and our Pokémon! Let's go!" (◕ヮ◕)

The base is a very simple one, but that is all it needs to be. We have a translucent dark orange circle with a Pokéball symbol printed on it.

I am sure some of you were concerned about the potential for the leg leaning and bending, but it seems that Koto has addressed this potential problem effectively.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1494850581.jpeg

Rather than the usual plastic peg you insert into the foot, Koto has tightly screwed the base to the bottom of her foot. Even when I lightly shake the figure, it does not seem to wobble. This is likely because the length of the screw goes up through the leg for extra stability. I can think of several figures I own that would have benefited from being constructed this way.

Let's take a closer look at her outfit. She has a on a light and cute travel outfit consisting of some sneakers, cargo shorts, an outdoor fanny pack, a thin crop top and of course cute her bandana tied up into a bow. She is all dressed up and ready to explore the wilderness of the Hoenn region.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1494850583.jpeg

The paint work here simple, but effective. It is not easy to notice at first, but there is a very light use of shading on her leggings, crop top and cargo shorts. Her belt buckle a shiny and textured coat of gun-metal black.

There is a tiny bit of shading done in the greens of the fanny pack, but everything else is a single shade paint application. And of course May has a cute little booty. It is amazing what all that Mach Bike riding to hatch those eggs will do for your gluteus. ♡ε♡

Mudkip:
Mudkip Mudkip♪
Kip Kip Mudkip♪

Translation:
Who wears short shorts♪
May wears short shorts♪

The bottom of her sneakers have a faint rubbery or Nerf foam type of look to them. And of course it is fitting that they have a Pokéball shape crafted around the toes.

Now let's take a look at her pretty hair and that precious baby face. Her hair has the most shading work seen on this figure and even has a faint texture to it. You can also see how precise the details of here face are in this zoomed in picture.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1494819841.jpeg

Her skin is also lightly shaded. You can see where the locations of her joints are painted with a slightly darker peachish color. If you look closely, you will also notice a bit of glossy coating on her finger nails. Even in the harsh and rugged wilderness of the Hoenn region, it is important to look fabulous.

What is my final verdict of this figurine? While the base is a bit on the basic side, there never was much need for it to be more complex than it is now. Beyond that thought, I honestly can't find anything disappointing or anything I would have done differently with this figure. I would say that Kotobukiya freaking nailed it with these two cuties. There is no doubt in my mind that this will skyrocket in value over time. So if you want this, you better get to buying it right now. It is already sold at several shops, so now is the time to make hunting this down a priority if you didn't pre-order.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1494818328.jpeg

I will admit that I have a biased position here. I have been a Pokémon fan for many years. Ruby & Sapphire were not only the first games in the series that drew me into the fandom, but the original GBA titles and the 3DS remakes also happen to be my favorite titles in the whole series. I still listen to the soundtrack from both titles frequently as background noise while I do stuff. That being said, I will be a little upset if Koto doesn't make a figure of Brendan and Treecko to go with this. There should also be a little Torchic with Brendan so we can have the whole gang on display. Seriously, Koto. I need that Brendan figure.

That concludes this review. I hope this has helped you in your decision in whether or not to purchase this figure. Tomorrow morning, I will post my April Loot showing all the neat stuff I added to my collection last month. All of my items for May have also arrived much sooner than they usually do, so I might be able to have my May Loot posted in the next within the next few days as well. After that, I am going to take a short break from blogging so I can get some stuff around my home organized. After that, I will give you all a tour of the newly renovated and decorated otaku lair I call "My Room."

See you all tomorrow morning with my April Loot. This is ChocolateSpider signing out. *scurries back into my web for some brownies.*

LovelyIdiot (1 year ago) #21187286Awesome review! I was pretty close to getting her but in the end chose not to. Probably a bad decision since she looks amazing but I'm holding out for a Hikari/dawn + Piplup figure xD

Oh snap! It turns out Banpresto already made a Dawn and Piplup figure. And I missed it! Waaaah! T3T

orochimaruxsaber (1 year ago) #21179900nice review!! :) I wish she were wearing her original outfit with the bandanna that covers her head. That's why I didn't buy this figure ;_; but it turned out way better than i thought it would!
That is what I was hoping for too. But if both figures existed, I would have bought both anyway. :P

Looks great, this may turn out to be Koto's best video game line probably.

This is actually a great figure. She is one of my favorite Pokemon protagonists.

I unfortunately had to cut her out of my budget ahead of time, so now I'm sad

Stalking (1 year ago) #21163187She's quite nice, Kotobukiya really does it when the design is simple (and sometimes when it's complex too)
Still... 10/10 in every category? You don't think anything at all could be even slightly better? mmmm

Well. If I have to make a suggestion for something, maybe some more detail in the sneakers and fanny pack would have been nice. But I personally don't feel like the way it is now creates any disappointment or leaving me feel underwhelmed. That being said, I wasn't sure whether to go 9/10 or 10/10. Same thing for the base.

I suppose I could lower them both to 9/10 and it basically has no real effect on its overall rating. It is a super wonderful figure regardless. :3
