Max Factory 1/7 Racing Sonico

victorviper3 months agoReview
Do you own a figure that hits so many of your moe points that it's almost as if they made a figure just for you? Well, today, we'll be reviewing such a figure, Max Factory's offering of the one and only Super Sonico in Hatsune Miku cosplay mode. There are a few shots below that could be considered a little bit NSFW...

About the figure: In addition to making figures, Good Smile also sponsors a GT racing team, and their cars often are adorned with illustrations of Hatsune Miku. As a result, every year like clockwork one sees new illustrations and character goods of Miku in race queen mode, and this particular figure depicts Sonico cosplaying in Miku's racing outfit, specifically its 2013 iteration as seen in PICTURE #633500. Sonico also appears in this outfit during episode 10 of the Super Sonico: the Animation (SoniAni) anime.

Packaging----------8/10

Max Factory goes with a simple but attractive box design. The checkerboard pattern and the little zips on the window reinforce the racing theme, and the large window affords a good look at the figure inside.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498520076.jpeg

One side panel features a large shot of Sonico.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498520078.jpeg

The other side panel features a collage of shots of the figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498520080.jpeg

One particular element of Sonico's design ended up being a little ecchier than I expected, and so I'm not sure if the striping on the back window is also playing up the racing motif or if Max Factory is trying to do a little convenient censoring of the figure inside...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498520082.jpeg

Sonico is a fairly large and heavy figure, and the box is made from a thick corrugated cardboard. The box measures 29 by 20 by 16 cm and figure+box weighs in at just under 700 grams.

Base----------8/10

Max Factory goes for a rather simple base with a frosted image of the Super Sonico logo. Given the mass of the figure, the single peg attaching Sonico to the base concerns me a little bit, but Sonico seems pretty stable attached to the base.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498520084.jpeg

The base is right about 5 inches (12.5 cm) in diameter, and it's not overly obtrusive. However, given the Sonico/Miku crossover theme, I wouldn't have minded seeing a base that was a little bit flashier or which played up the crossover.

Posing----------9/10

Sonico is of course a part-time gravure model, and this pose would appear to feature her in full gravure mode, as the way she's coyly leaning over provides plenty of fanservice opportunities.

Let's have a look at her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498594422.jpeg

Sonico certainly looks good from a number of angles, so there are no complaints on this front.

Sculpting----------8.5/10
Painting----------9/10

Max Factory has a reputation for making quality figures, and Sonico is no exception. There are however a few quirks on the painting and sculpting fronts of which prospective Sonico owners might want to be aware.

One of my favorite things about this figure is Sonico's happy and cheerful expression. Many Sonico figures give the impression that she is worried or that she might be in danger of being taken advantage of in some way, and so her happy expression is a nice change of pace. Her eyes are also extremely expressive, and given that her costume is rather revealing, I think the blush is both appropriate and it is in character. I like the shading around her mouth, too. That's an area which is sometimes an afterthought, but the shading gives a sense of depth there.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498595777.jpeg

Sonico appears in this outfit right after the opening credits in episode 10 of the SoniAni anime, and she seems a little nervous, but I think she looks better in happy mode :). Note that in the shot from the anime, the necktie just lays over her chest as not wedged in her cleavage, so Max Factory freestyled a little bit there.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498995432.jpeg

An interesting detail which I did not notice until seeing the figure in person is the white and silver color scheme of Sonico's signature headphones. Typically her headphones are all silver, so this is a slightly different change of pace. If you're being picky, you might note that the little stripe where the "cap" on her headphone meets the main body is a little bit messy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498595779.jpeg

Since Sonico is in Miku-cosplay mode, it's only right that she puts her hair up in twintails. Sonico + twintails, where have you been all my life :).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498595781.jpeg

The twintails are definitely a good look for Sonico! It kind of makes me wish that more figure designers would mix up her look a little.

I did notice this little rough patch in one of Sonico's ponytails.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498595783.jpeg

There are of course many, many Sonico figures out there and there is considerable color variation in her hair color from figure to figure. For example, ITEM #198576 makes her hair a fairly solid pink with subtle white highlights while ITEM #78702 makes her hair almost white. This figure sort of splits the difference and gives Sonico's hair a very bold white-to-pink color gradient.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498595785.jpeg

This outfit incorporates some key features typically associated with Hatsune Miku's appearance, including black thighhighs, the silver, white and teal colors, and of course the necktie. The way that the necktie disappears between Sonico's breasts will certainly catch the eye, and the large Goodsmile Racing logo was probably strategically placed by the designer of the outfit. It kind of brings to mind this story that was widely circulated a few years back about Japanese companies paying young women to place advertisements on their upper thighs...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498602981.jpeg

Sonico is known for her large (90 cm/35 inch) bust, and the cutout in her outfit and the way she's leaning forward provides plenty of fan service. I like how her breasts are not spherical, as that gives a sense of mass there.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498602983.jpeg

Probably my biggest complaint with the figure can be seen in the shot below. You can see how Sonico's breasts sort of merge into one unibreast, and the way the bottom of the necktie suddenly emerges out of there looks a little bit weird. In fairness, you won't see this unless you're looking straight up at Sonico from below, but still Max Factory could have done a little better here.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498602985.jpeg

From the promo shots, I didn't even notice that this red Good Smile Racing logo appears on Sonico's stockings.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498602987.jpeg

One key feature of this outfit are these little gems/crystals that appear in various places on Sonico's outfit. However, if you compare this figure with this PICTURE #633500 illustration, you can see that fewer gems/crystals make their way on to this imagining of the outfit. Also, notice that the striping on the collar didn't get completely painted in a couple of spots.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498602989.jpeg

Sonico has some meat on her bones, and so presumably Max Factory tries to reinforce this idea with this little crease in Sonico's torso. I can't quite decide if that crease is a little more pronounced than it should be though. It really stood out to me the first time I unboxed the figure and started looking at it...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498603101.jpeg

Another key feature of this outfit is these clear "flaps" which go over Sonico's skirt. I like the metal tips on there, but what I was (unsuccessfully!) trying to photograph was the fact that the clear parts had some sort of oily residue on them which made them look sort of cloudy. This necessitated taking a damp paper towel and very carefully sliding it underneath each clear piece to try to remove the residue. It eventually came off, but this something that should have been taken care of at the factory...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498603103.jpeg

If you like butts, then the sculpt of Sonico's backside will be a thing of beauty! Note the subtle curve as her thigh gently transitions into her glute. Thongs also check one of my moe boxes, so the Sonico+thong combination is a powerful one!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498603105.jpeg

Those are some really skimpy panties!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498603107.jpeg

The way Sonico is posed with her knees bent and her feet almost perpendicular to one another, it means that her right knee contorts at a pretty extreme angle. She would certainly have to bend her knee like that to hold this pose, bit it does look a little awkward from certain angles.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498603109.jpeg

These metal diamond-shaped pieces on the shoes are a very interesting feature. Interestingly, if you compare this figure to PICTURE #633500 and various Miku figures based on that illustration (ITEM #144410 and ITEM #144414) you will see that both the illustration and those figures adorn Miku's shoes with additional crystals, but this figure does not. However, this design does duplicate the appearance of the outfit in the SoniAni anime* (I guess the simplification of the outfit happened because TV anime is always made on shoestring budgets).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498603154.jpeg

*---Thanks to MFC user hatchetsforhands for pointing this out!

Scale Comparison

This figure is about 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) in height at its tallest point, and if Sonico were standing upright I estimate she would be about 10 inches (25.5 cm) tall. She is established to be 5'2" (158 cm) tall, and even though her heels probably add an inch or two to that, this figure is definitely closer to 1/6 scale even though the box says 1/7. In any event, Sonico definitely looks like a 1/6 scale figure sitting on the shelf.

Here is Sonico with a FuRyu prize Sonico ITEM #252297. That figure, like many of those FuRyu Sonicos, is 1/7-ish in scale, and so you can see how the Max Factory Sonico does seem larger.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498524617.jpeg

Sonico and Lala Deviluke definitely have some similar features. Alter's Lala ITEM #286484 is 1/6 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498524681.jpeg

Sonico with one of my favorite figures, Alter's Muse of Range Murata ITEM #186018. Muse is 1/6 scale, and sitting on the shelf, she and Sonico are very similar in size.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498524713.jpeg

Sena Kashiwazaki and Sonico are two of my favorite characters, and as Alphamax's Sena ITEM #106566 is 1/7 in scale, you can see how Sonico looks significantly bigger than that.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498524980.jpeg

Leviathan ITEM #195472 is also 1/7 scale. Because Sonico's twintails occupy some space, in the photo below Leviathan is sitting quite a bit closer to the camera. As a result in the photo she and Sonico look comparable in size, while sitting on the shelf Sonico looks larger.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498525100.jpeg

Leviathan: Hey, mine are big too, you know!

Sonico with Miku herself. Given that Sonico is a prospective gravure model, idol, and musician, I think she'd be a little awestruck to meet Miku :). Good Smile's "Tell Your World" Miku ITEM #236245 is 1/8 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1498525149.jpeg

Obligatory Yotsuba-taking-photo shot :).

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: Sonico is somewhat larger than her advertised 1/7 scale (there's nothing wrong with more Sonico than expected!), the twintails are a great look for the character, the Sonico-Miku mashup is a neat concept, dat booty, overall good quality.

Arguments against: A couple sculpting quirks (in particular, the way her boobs sort of merge together), the figure deviates from the source illustration in a couple of ways (but is faithful to how to outfit appears in the SoniAni anime), and Sonico's pose makes her look a little awkward from certain angles.

For my own inscrutable reasons, I did not preorder this figure, but when I saw that Sonico was still available a few weeks later, I did not hesitate to order her. As a fan of both Sonico and Miku, the crossover theme was too powerful to resist. Perhaps the Sonico-Miku crossover is a niche within a niche within a niche, and that is why this figure was still readily available after the preorder period (more on that in a second), but for the Sonico fans out there, I'd recommend this figure without hesitation.

Availability (as of this writing)

Still available new.

As I write this, AmiAmi, Hobby Search, and HLJ all list this figure in stock. Suggested retail is 13700 yen, but 11000 yen and some change should do it if you're a savvy shopper. This figure has been a common fixture in AmiAmi's preowned section during the last month, and pre-owned Sonicos have been going for 9500 to 10000 yen.

Maakie (3 months ago) #23495383Nice review again! The 'appearing' of the tie also bothers me a bit. The figure from the front is so cute, but looking from below at her boobs is so...strange. I'm also a bit disappointed on the way smaller amount of gems (glass pieces?) on the outfit compared to the Miku design, but I guess I can't complain much about that if it is canon for the TV anime (I still need to watch that one!). Except for those 2 'complaints', I really like this figure! I'm a bit surprised at how long they made Sonico's hair, but it looks cute. Even though her boobs are 'out there', the figure still feels very classy and I love the outfit! :)

Sonico's hair is definitely one of the best things about this figure. The world could use more twintailed Sonicos :).

The issue with the tie is probably the biggest one with this figure, but in fairness one will almost never be looking at the figure like that under normal circumstances. However, it seems like it would have been a whole lot easier to sculpt the tie just laying on her chest like it appears in the anime; it probably would have looked better too!

victorviper (3 months ago) #23136439Better late than never :).
I really like this one, too. Plus, I wanted a large but not huge Sonico to round out my Sonico shelf, and this one is just the perfect size. She's big, but not so gigantic that she just totally overwhelms the shelf. She nicely balances out ITEM #198372 and ITEM #78702 which sit on the same shelf.
Plus, that killer booty!

Both are very nice Sonico's.
( I have the tan variant of the Cheerleader, so I can attest to that. )
Also, looking forward to your next reveiw.
Even if I don't comment on them, I do always read them. :)

But i wanted to say thanks for another great review.
I have this Sonico as well, and I think she's adorable!
I also agree this this Sonico might have the greatest booty of all the Sonicos to date. XD

Lulles (3 months ago) #22979773Great review! I'd just like to point out that the tie is between her boobs in this figure because Max Factory followed the original illustration picture/1450155... not the anime.

Thanks for pointing that out. Between the original illustration of Miku's racing outfit, the appearance of this outfit in that illustration you pointed out, and its appearance in the SoniAni anime, you kind of need a scorecard to keep track :).

RockGodItachi (3 months ago) #22951167I have this figure and I dearly love her! In fact it's strange reading this as I too was apprehensive at buying her but I went in for the pre-order anyway and after unboxing her I knew I'd made the right choice! Her smile is refreshing and the outfit and pose is eye catching! Plus the attention to detail on her was a surprise and that booty is just sublime! All in all I was really shocked with this figure and even more so now reading this review! You've pointed things out here that I totally missed for my unboxing/review video even though (I thought) I had scrutinized this figure to every inch looking for any imperfections. Seems I will have to be even more stricter when unboxing/reviewing! A very thorough review, really enjoyed reading! :D

Admittedly, most of the imperfections are rather minor.

I wasn't really apprehensive about buying this Sonico, but her release month of April was a pretty full month for me, and the truth of the matter is that you don't really see many Sonico figures skyrocket in value so I figured she'd be around. I'm a little surprised that all the big stores still have Sonico new, though. It would be a shame if such a great figure ended up bargain-binning...

hatchetsforhands (3 months ago) #22924932The reason she doesn't have the diamonds on her shoes is because this figure is referencing the cosplay scene from SoniAni. The animation made the design a little simpler.

*Snaps fingers*. I'd totally forgotten that Sonico wore this outfit during the SoniAni anime.
Thanks for reminding me!
