August ChillsAugust Chills

gundamukgundamuk1 year agoDiary
If you live North of the equator then summers are often hot, and August frequently the hottest month of the year so staying cool is a priority.

Different cultures have different solutions to keeping cool, but one of my favorites is the Japanese summer penchant for ghost stories and ghost-themed amusements, especially in August. For centuries the Japanese have believed that a good scare keeps you cool (we get goosebumps from both cold and fear, right?), and every year the month of August gives rise to a terrific variety of horrifying amusements throughout Japan – theme parks tweak their haunted houses so they're extra scary and summer-only haunted escape rooms bring plenty of chills to those that visit.

Popular culture joins in too, with movie studios releasing a new crop of J-horror films every summer, plenty of horror-themed manga and anime, and Kabuki theatres performing classic, centuries-old Japanese ghost stories like The Peony Lantern (牡丹燈籠) and The Yotsuya Ghost Story (四谷怪談). By the way, if you’re visiting Tokyo I highly recommend a trip to the Kabuki-za (歌舞伎座)in Ginza www.kabuki-za.c... to see a Kabuki performance. It’s a great break from figure shopping and a fascinating and authentic Japanese cultural experience. Anyway, even figure manufacturers get into the summer ghost madness –could it be coincidence that Bandai released their version of The Ring’s Sadako ITEM #197664 in mid-summer? Or Max Factory’s late summer release of their Figma Flyboy zombie ITEM #144331?

Although October and Halloween seem to bring out most ghostly MFC pics, for this August I'm going to post some some chill-inducing figure pics to keep things chill Japanese summer-style, and I encourage others as well to beat the heat and give us your take on August chills.

So here's a start:

MajesticCow (1 year ago) #24206481Very interesting sorta like how in America the most big budget horror movies come out around Christmas, you would think it would be Halloween but nah.True, true. I hadn't thought about U.S. horror movie timing but a lot are released during the winter.

Despite being born in July, I don't like summer. In fact, I hate that season with a passion: where I live, the summers are damp and the last couple of years, it's not a rare sight to sometimes see the mercury soaring at 35°C, if not higher, making working outside like working in Hell. Thankfully I have AC in my living room, but things aren't going to get any better...

I definitely prefer autumn and winter, they're cozy and comfy. Yeah, when changing from summer time to winter time, enjoy the night falling around 5 PM. And these seasons're wet so it can be really cold, but you can always wear more clothes or put the heater on.

As for August chills, I fondly remember the summer camps back when I was a cub scout and the scary stories that came along, were they told by my friends or by the monitors.
