Amakuni 1/7 Chachamaru Ashikaga "Wedding"

victorvipervictorviper3 months agoReview
I like blonde-haired characters, I like lingerie figures, and in particular I like the lingerie wedding concept. So today, we'll be reviewing a figure that checks all of those moe boxes, Amakuni's Chachamaru Ashikaga. She does have some castoff features, so the shots behind spoiler tags are NSFW.

About the character: Chachamaru Ashikaga is a character from Nitroplus' FullMetal Daemon Muramasa visual novel. The novel takes place in an alternate modern Japan which is still ruled by a shogunate, where the warrior class wields Tsurugi, powerful sets of armor infused with living spirits.

Chachamaru is a military general and it is also revealed that she is a View spoilerHide spoilerhalf-human, half-Tsurugi hybrid, as her mother imprinted herself on a Tsurugi.

Packaging----------8/10

This figure had both a regular release as well as an limited version which came with some bonus extras (more on the bonus items later). I picked up the limited edition preowned from AmiAmi, and mine came with the bonus items wrapped onto the figure box. Everything was still sealed, so I assume this was how the item originally shipped, although I can't say for sure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795691.jpeg

Amakuni goes for a windowless box and the front of the box features a large shot of Chachamaru.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795699.jpeg

The sides of the box feature profile shots of the figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795701.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795703.jpeg

The back of the box features a montage of various shots of Chachamaru and her beautiful...bouquet.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795705.jpeg

The blister contains the figure, Chachamaru's alternate chest part, and her bouquet. Everything seems pretty well protected.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795707.jpeg

Since Chachamaru stands on one foot, Amakuni wisely makes her foot peg out of metal. I didn't notice too much wobbling when moving the figure around.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795711.jpeg

The bouquet just slips into her hands. My one complaint here is that the shaft of the bouquet seems a little bit smaller than it probably should be. It fits very loosely in her hands, so I'd be careful when moving her around, lest the bouquet fall out of her hands.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795713.jpeg

I do like how the stems of the flowers are wrapped in some sort of material (paper? fabric?). I'm no expert on weddings, but I guess that's how you'd prepare a bridal bouquet, right?

Set up and ready to go!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795715.jpeg

The box is fairly large, measuring 30 by 20 by 16 cm, and it's made of a heavy corrugated cardboard.

Bonus items----------9.5/10

Let's have a quick look at the bonus items. The limited version comes with a clear file with a large illustration of Chachamaru and some sort of document inside.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795694.jpeg

It turns out the document is a marriage certificate. The way this one is arranged, the bride would fill out the right half and the groom fills out the other half. You can see that Chachamaru has already filled out her half, and her handwriting is quite cute :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795696.jpeg

I plugged away with my smartphone's camera and Google Translate in an attempt to figure out what information the various fields are asking for. My partial translation is below as a public service to MFC :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795728.jpeg

There were a few things Google Translate had some problems with. For example, box 6 asks if this is a first marriage, and if not, the disposition of the previous marriage. Google translated one of the options as "trivate", a term I'd never heard before. I assume that's some sort of synonym for divorce/separation, snce the other option suggests the prior spouse is deceased. I also learned that Google Translate works really well when "reading" typeset text, but not so well when trying to decipher handwritten characters. That's sort of an interesting artificial intelligence problem...

In any event, the wedding certificate is a pretty neat extra. The artwork on the certificate is nice, and I could see people scanning the form and printing out a spare copy with their information to display with the figure. It's a pretty cool, if fairly hard-core, otaku accessory.

Base----------8/10

The design of the base is pretty simple but it complements the figure, particularly the flower petals. The tiered edges are another nice small touch.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264459.jpeg

Note the engraving on the base.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264464.jpeg

My one complaint about the base is that it is probably a little bit larger than it really needs to be (about 5.5 inches/14 cm on a side). I would have preferred a round base, since a round base of the same general dimensions will take up less area on crowded shelves.

Posing----------8/10

Chachamaru has a pretty lively personality and this is reflected in the figure's pose. From the looks of it, she might be getting ready to toss her bridal bouquet.

Let's have a look at her.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505166642.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505166645.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505166649.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505166652.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505166656.jpeg

One issue with Chachamaru's pose is the way she's leaning backwards slightly. When she's viewed from straight on, it's no problem, but it does make her look slightly awkward when viewed from angles off of dead center. I've also got Chachamaru displayed on a shelf slightly above eye level, and from that angle the lean is also perceptible. Thus, I'd say she really ought to be viewed at eye level from straight ahead. On the other hand, I like this figure enough that I just might rearrange one of my Detolfs to make that happen!

Sculpting----------8/10
Painting----------9/10

Generally, Chachamaru's overall finish is fine, but she does have one or two glaring issues that really stand out.

One area where Amakuni did just fine is the design of Chachamaru's face. In particular, I really like how her eyes turned out! It seems to me that the typical design of anime eyes has gotten softer and rounder in recent memory, so I really like the more "severe" and old-school look of Chachamaru's eyes. The orange-amber color of her eyes really stands out too. Her little fang also exudes lots of personality.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264401.jpeg

I like the way her bangs turn upward at the ends :). Also notice how her hair is translucent and the material has a little bit of a shine to it. Blonde haired characters can make for a challenge, as sometimes blonde hair ends up looking very flat and plain, so I think making her hair shiny and translucent was a fine solution.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264410.jpeg

Making the veil more opaque towards its center is a nice touch. The lace trim on the veil is painted on and not sculpted, as that would be fantastically difficult to sculpt.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264415.jpeg

If you prefer, the veil can be removed. However, doing so makes it very obvious that her hair was made from two pieces of material, as you can clearly see where they meet.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264417.jpeg

You can see a spot in the veil where a little more sanding would have been in order, and the roses in her hair look a little bit smushed IMO. Additionally, I noticed that Chachamaru's veil just won't sit in place very well; it's fairly heavy and any attempt to move the figure around makes it want to fall off. A better solution would have been to include an alternate hair piece which can attach to both the veil and Chachamaru's head (kind of like Max Factory did with Haruna Sairenji ITEM #287789), or to use magnets to keep the veil secured in place.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264421.jpeg

Two of the biggest issues with the figure are prominent in the shot below. First, that part above Chachamaru's bust line is presumably supposed to be a piece of lace, and presumably such a light piece of material would be semi-translucent, but its coloring is just too flesh-like. Also, the figure comes with two different chest parts and you can see that I just couldn't get this one to sit flush with the rest of Chachamaru's body.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264424.jpeg

The gloves are pretty standard issue for a bride. Also, Chachamaru has a pretty perky bosom, and the way she's holding her arms out, she's also pressing her breasts together thereby making them look even perkier :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264429.jpeg

I like the ribs in her bustier. Also, since her outfit is solid white, the shiny finish on the bustier draws the eye to that part of the figure. The frill on the bottom of the bustier is also very cute; it's almost like a microskirt.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264433.jpeg

The sculpt of the little bows on Chachamaru's garters is generally good, but you can see a couple spots of messy painting where her panties meet her skin.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264436.jpeg

I like the little roses where the garters attach.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264438.jpeg

You can see some more messy painting where her panties meet her body. I like how you can see some slack in her garter; since Chachamaru is lifting her leg, there'd definitely be some slack there.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264441.jpeg

Chachamaru has a cute butt. The subtle shading on her backside is well done, and the way she's lifting her leg, that slight asymmetry in her butt cheeks would definitely be there :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264444.jpeg

Other than Chachamaru herself, one of the most eye-catching elements of the figure is her bouquet. The way that vine (or whatever it is) wraps around her body adds an additional element of movement to the figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264446.jpeg

Her bouquet appears to consist of white roses, pink roses and lilies. There is of course an entire language of flowers but I am not particularly fluent, and so I had to do a little internet research about the meaning of these three flowers. Apparently pink roses, white roses, and lilies convey feelings of trust, innocence, and purity respectively.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264450.jpeg

Chachamaru's shoes have a very subtle silver hue to them.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264456.jpeg

Cast-off----------7.5/10

Chachamaru also comes with an optional chest part, so let's see how that process works. Although the process of swapping in the optional part is pretty straightforward, Amakuni includes some instructions anyway. Nothing wrong with that.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264467.jpeg

Chachamaru in her disassembled state.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264470.jpeg

Cast-off shots lurk behind the spoiler tags. You've been warned...

Possibly my biggest complaint about the figure is apparent in the shot below. You can see how there's a bunch of excess material around the bottom of the optional chest part. In fairness, it could *probably* be removed easily enough with an X-acto knife, but still...

View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264473.jpeg

The excess material ends up being visible when the part is put in place. Also, you can see once again how the chest part just doesn't quite want to sit flush with the rest of her bustier.

View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264475.jpeg

Concerns about the fit of the part and the excess material aside, I think Chachamaru looks quite cute with the optional chest part. Also, her nipples are quite large relative to the overall size of her breasts. This is not a feature you see every day, and it also makes her breasts look even perkier.

View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264478.jpeg

Scale Comparison

Chachamaru is just a hair over 9 inches (23 cm) tall, and at 1/7 scale that would make her about 5'3" (161 cm) in height, which seems consistent with her character design.

Here is Chachamaru with the lovely Haruna Sairenji ITEM #287789. Haruna and Chachamaru have pretty similar body types, and I'd assume they are similar in height as well. Haruna is 1/6 scale for comparison.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264641.jpeg

Chachamaru and Tomoka Minato ITEM #339063 look very cute together, and the bouquets really make for a nice accessory with both of these figures. Tomoka is 1/7 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1503795725.jpeg

Asuka ITEM #889 is not really supposed to be a bride; rather she's supposed to be in Aphrodite mode. Asuka is 1/8 scale for comparison.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264646.jpeg

These two complement each other nicely. Nana Chigusa's ITEM #42096 raven hair and bondage outfit pairs well with Chachamaru's blonde hair and pure white lingerie. Nana is 1/6 scale for comparison.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264651.jpeg

Chachamaru with Kotobukiya's Miki Hoshii ITEM #98895. Maybe Miki is a bikini bridesmaid at Chachamaru's lingerie wedding :). Since I have sort of a weakness for the blonde character + white outfit combination, if someone made a lingerie wedding Miki figure, that would almost certainly be an instant pre-order, but I'm not really holding my breath...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264654.jpeg

Chachamaru with one of my favorite characters. Taking this photo reminded me how Max Factory needs to get their collective ass in gear and get a Yami made to complete this PICTURE #589975 set :). Alphamax's Yami ITEM #137123 is 1/7 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1505264659.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: Chachamaru's cheerful and energetic pose, her attractive old-school eyes, it's nice to see characters from the franchise other than Muramasa Sansei get some figures, the bonus clear file/marriage certificate is pretty neat, and at least for me, the blonde+lingerie+wedding concept checks a lot of moe boxes.

Arguments against: A few very obvious QC issues, like the excess material on her optional chest part, the poor fit of the chest parts, and the fact that Chachamaru's veil doesn't want to stay put very well.

Chachamaru is not a perfect figure to be sure, but she might be one of my new favorites anyway. If you are a fan of the Fullmetal Daemon Muramasa franchise, or if you simply like any combination of blonde characters, wedding figures, or lingerie figures, I'd recommend this figure, flaws and all.

Availability (as of this writing)

Easy to find preowned.

Chachamaru has been fairly easy to find secondhand since her release, but interestingly the figure hasn't seen much of a price drop. The original version originally sold for 12000 yen, and that's about what you should expect to pay for a preowned Chachamaru. If you'd like to splurge for the limited edition with the clear file and marriage certificate, it won't cost a whole lot more; I got a B+/B one from AmiAmi for 13000 yen.

Maakie (2 months ago) #26327146I had no clue about her hair being translucent, I love the effect. It adds a lot of extra depth and I find it for some reason oddly charming to see her eyebrows peeking through.
I do have one small gripe with this figure though: I think her fang looks oddly shaped. Must be a personal thing, because I have heard no other people about this.
Nice review again! :)

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought it was neat that you can see her eyebrows through the hair :).

My issue with the fang isn't necessarily its shape, but rather that the fang seems a little too big relative to the rest of her face (and it protrudes out of her mouth more than it should).

secretly-otaku (2 months ago) #26082798When I read blonde + wedding dress, I just thought of ITEM #276879... and since she can be cast off, I believe it covers that lingerie option, too xP...
Really nice review as usual, thank you very much! I don't know anything about the anime/manga she's from, but I do like Chachamaru's character design a lot! However, I think Amakuni's effort for this one wasn't definitely their best. And I believe that for a B/B (which luckily seems more like an A+/B from your review), paying the retail price seems a bit excessive, but well... wedding dresses are not my cup of tea, maybe that makes the difference xP.

I don't have too many Amakuni figures, but I found that Chachamaru was pretty similar in quality to their Lucifer ITEM #161925 and Asmodeus ITEM #171477 figures from their Seven Deadly Sins line. Both of those figures have some neat features coupled with a few really noticeable issues, and that would be a good one line summary of Chachamaru as well.

Even though she was graded B+/B from AmiAmi, there was nothing wrong with the box, and there was no indication the figure had been opened, so I had no issue with the price.

As far as Saber goes, I might be the one person on MFC who doesn't have a single solitary Saber in their collection, so this wasn't going to be a review of a Saber :).

BVibes (2 months ago) #26046560Nice review, I like blonde characters too tho I don't know this one. :D The bonus items are interesting, lol.
Feels like she would look good with ITEM #61558 too, the blonde transparent hair + white, tho scale maybe won't match well.

I think they'd go well enough together, although Panty wearing white is kind of funny in and of itself.

And I agree about the hair, that transparency effect is a really nice touch.

I really like her :).

It's really tough to paint blonde hair in a way that it both looks realistic and where it's not just plain and dull, so I think the shiny semi-transparent hair is a neat look. I like how you can see her eyebrows through the bangs as well.

Thanks for the comment!

nikkoda (3 months ago) #26024332She's so cute! I love Namaniku's designs so much, it really pop in figures. The only complaint I'd have is the leaning as well, that always makes me worry.
The marriage certificate is a real nice touch. We're getting closer and closer to actually marrying our 2D girls.

I don't think the lean is enough to make the figure unstable in any way, and she would need to be leaning back a little bit the way she's holding her arms out, but they might have gotten a little bit carried away and exaggerated the effect there.

It would have been cool if GSC had decided to do a release of ITEM #500291 with a clear file and a marriage certificate instead of the crazy expensive limited versions with the silver/gold rings.
