Kotobukiya Roy MustangKotobukiya Roy Mustang

Howdy diddly dee, everybody. It’s time for another figure review! Today I’m taking a look at one of my most anticipated figures of 2017. Let’s take a gander at this glorious figure of Roy Mustang from the critically acclaimed hit anime, Fullmetal Alchemist. And this wonderful addition to my collection is made by Kotobukiya.

Just as with most Kotobukiya figures, the box is anything but bland. All sides are vividly stylized with images of the figure and other eye-popping graphics.

Now let’s take Roy out of the box and gaze at his magnificence. No assembly is required for this figure. Just open the box, take it out, and be amazed with your purchase. This figure has a very imposing presentation that commands your attention. Roy is adjusting his gloves while glaring at you with intensity and resolve. He leans against a stone with a transmutation circle carved into it as fire burns around his feet. Resting on that stone is a torn and burnt Amestris flag.

This is one of those figures that looks impressive at any angle. If you have an electric turntable available for use in your collection, this is a figure that would make excellent use of it.

Colonel Roy Mustang has shown himself to be a highly ambitious and fearsome warrior when he is not goofing around talking about mini skirts or being useless when it rains. This figure captures this intense side of his personality perfectly. His head is nicely detailed. The hair is cleanly sculpted and the paint for his skin has been well shaded. I especially like the level of detail with his eyes, brows and the other elements that give an accurate recreation of this intense gaze.

I am especially pleased with the level of detail in his State Alchemist uniform. He has all the ornaments and medals you would expect a decorated colonel such as him to have. The uniform itself is well shaded giving it something of a suede-type appearance. You can see some black paint stains on his arm. That seems to be a small paint defect with my copy, but I have not yet seen paint defects in pictures from other owners of this figure. It is not that bad though; it is barely noticeable in person.

You can also see some of the contours of his body underneath his uniform on the back. Look at those broad shoulders and toned back. Don’t be afraid of the fire, ladies. He won’t let you burn.

The small transmutation circles on his gloves are crisply painted. The gloves themselves are sculpted to appear skin-tight covering of his hands, which is important in creating friction when he snaps his fingers for the activation his flame alchemy.

The torn and burnt Amestris flag behind him has some of the best shading seen on this figure. Through the assorted curves and folds of this flag, you can see smooth gradients of dark green and black with burn marks at the bottom.

I am impressed with the detail of this crumbling stone with the transmutation circle. You can see that whatever the whole structure this stone was a part of had a large transmutation diagram on it.

Koto has done a lovely job with the flames. The transparent orange plastic has been excellently shaded with solid bright-orange. Be careful when handling the base because the plastic bends easily and is quite fragile.

This figure also comes with an alternate black jacket part. Nothing says your a badass like having a black jacket hanging off your shoulders and blowing in the wind. This extra part greatly amplifies the……….Do you really need to grill chicken on my new figure, Deadpool? I’m in the middle of a review here.

Deadpool: “What do you expect me to do? Grill this on an actual stove with real heat? That’s just stupid. You’re stupid.”

Koto has done a great job with the posing of the many folds and creases of the jacket. It is in sync with the posing of the flames underneath to make it seem that the air pressure created from the heat below is blowing the jacket around. I have mine on display without the jacket at the moment, but the jacket nicely brings some motion to this static figure.

Other than that bit of black on his arm, I can’t find a thing wrong or anything I would have done differently with this figure. As far as I’m concerned, Kotobukiya has freaking nailed it with this beauty. Seeing how Roy has turned out makes me even more eager for their Edward Elric Deluxe Edition to arrive. Hopefully Tokyo Otaku Mode will be shipping mine out soon. Until then, I have Colonel Roy Mustang, the Flame Alchemist to take command of my favorite anime shelf.

Thank you for taking the time to read this review. I hope it has aided you in your decision whether or not to purchase it. If you do want it, you better act fast. It is sold out at most stores and is highly likely to skyrocket in after-market prices.

Now that this review is concluded, I shall prepare the review for the 1/8 Ruby Rose from RWBY made by Di Molto Bene This is ChocolateSpider signing out!

Not sorry. By the way, I am already there. :P

Titan_Scientist (1 year ago) #27648117After reading this review way too many times, I ended up buying this figure. Damn you. Damn you to the depths of Idol Hell.
(Also, is it just me, or is the transmutation circle on the base the one from Riza's tattoo?)

Oh yes! We need a legit Hawkeye figure. I would also like to see all the homunculi. :D

Cantisama (1 year ago) #26841300I really enjoy your reviews, especially the fun touches you add to the photos (Kirby absorbing fire power, lol). I have this figure as well and couldn't agree more that Kotobukiya perfectly captured Roy's appearance and demeanor.
I'm skipping Koto's Edward since I already have MegaHouse's ITEM #72238, but I hope Koto continues making such quality FMA figures. Hawkeye next please ~

Kotobukiya does make some great figures. Many of my favorite anime figures are made by them.

Fallen-Cloud (1 year ago) #26835029Did not order Roy but seeing how he turned out makes me really excited to get my limited edition Ed from Yorokonde soon! I'd love to own both one day but had to decide on one for now and Ed won.
I'm always so impressed with the figures that Kotobukiya makes - figures like Ken Kaneki or the Full Metal Alchemist guys are close to my heart and almost no other figure company picks those series up. I like Megahouse too for that reason, despite the fact that I think Aniplex' has the best overall quality.
Your review was so cute btw! That Deadpool scene made me chuckle.
