A really long long weekendA really long long weekend

It is Thanksgiving weekend up here in America's hat and while I usually look forward to long weekends this one has been really stressful.

While most of my friends are off with their families doing what families do during this holiday, I've had the fortune of putting together some ikea furniture!

I am exhausted

Back in February I moved out on my own and have been saving up for display cases (along with some other furniture) since. I went the detolf route because I love how they look and the price tag is a bonus too. I ordered 8 of them and had some friends help me put them together. We only completed 6 of the 8 but I hope I can finish the last two some time today.

But even if I put those two together it won't be the end of my detolf building days.

Two of the 6 I've built so far have had defective frames that make the shelves pretty much unusable!!!! I've taken one apart and stood the frames side by side and found that the bars that hold the shelves aren't at the same height?! There's like a half inch difference lol

I'm going to call ikea tomorrow and see what hoops they make me jump through to replace these defective detolfs. I'm not looking forward to it.

Here's praying that the two unbuilt aren't defective!

EDIT: I fixed one of the defective ones by measuring how far to tighten the bottom bolts. One side had too much coating on the threads so they didn't tighten as far as the other side which made the shelves not line up. Good job IKEA.

EDIT 2: finished building them all except for one. I measured the bars from the end to the first shelf bar and one of the bars measures at around 38cm while the rest measure at 40.5cm @_@ looks like I can't avoid calling ikea later after all

I'll second (or third or fourth) the suggestion about making sure none of the frames is upside down. The shelf heights in the Detolf are not uniform; the bottom shelf is about 3/4 of an inch taller than the others.

Polkadopolis (1 year ago) #26941971I'll check with the one I haven't disassembled but the one I have already is so obviously uneven. One of the frames looks like they didn't have the two side bars aligned properly when they attached the shelf bars so if you try to stand it up on the floor it tilts to one side orz

That does sound like a manufacturing fault :( IKEA are usually known for being good about replacing stuff, so hopefully you'll get it sorted without too much hassle.

tharglet (1 year ago) #26941016... defective or upside down? Might be worth a check, if you haven't already.

murialita (1 year ago) #26941468I second making sure one of the frames is not upside down. I've noticed that in the past with mine when I was building them.
If you do need a replacement, IKEA is pretty good about that, once you manage to talk to someone. One of mine was missing one of the rubber grommets that go into the base that the door plugs into. They wound up sending me two whole door hardware kits, since they are pre-packaged together. No charge. They did actually come from Sweden, and in only a few days.

That's good to know.
I hope my replacement goes as smoothly.Lehst (1 year ago) #26941122Oh no! I wish you best getting them replaced.
Someday I'd like to get new (matching?) furniture lol. I've just been using hand-me-downs and flea market finds... functional but put them all in a place together and it looks pretty bad XD.
Congrats on successfully saving up for your new furniture tho!

Thanks! I feel so adult having bought furniture lol but a lot of my stuff is still mismatched. Most of my furniture is black but my sofa is an awful shade of brown because it was a freebie lmao and my coffee table is an old TV stand from the days of tube tvs ;u;
