I finally got my refund 3/4, my credit card company took care of the items purchased this year but not not last year, so not as bad. Paypal was practically useless when I contacted them they told me they cant help me even if the purchase was just two months ago. Anime Island did not reply still. But credit card took care of the problem.

Posted this to my blog and coping it here:

I called the Better Business Bureau and spoke with a person there about the situation on my older orders and they said that even though they (THE BBB) may not be able to get funds back from the company, they would send the company your info you provide as well as the amount you list as owed. This way they said it provides a paper trail should any remaining assets of Anime Island's be available or sold (if they file bankruptcy of some type) that proceeds from those sales may go toward customers owed, even if it is a partial payment it would be better than nothing. Their website to file a claim is www.bbb.org/con...

DO NOT file a claim with BBB if you already disputed an order thru your credit card, PayPal, bank or similar institution as if you are refunded this would be double dipping and would be disqualified, do not include amounts you may be already getting refunded on by any of the previous as this may disqualify other un-reimbursed funds from being partially returned. Make sure you exhaust every other outlet prior to doing this as this would be the last resort but would make sure that AI knows you are still owed money and were unable to get your funds back thru your payment form.

Cantisama (8 days ago) #27102624That's the nicest response to being robbed I've ever heard.
Regardless of circumstance, AI should have emailed their customers and posted on their website, rather than disappearing without a trace with paid yet unfilfilled pre-orders still pending.

Having dealt with defunct companies filling bankruptcy who have included my employer as a creditor, do know that Anime Island saying nothing does help us in that PayPal will continue to refund people thru disputes based on the current info we are all giving them until they receive a notice from Anime Island (or their lawyers) that they (may be) going bankrupt or similar. At which time PayPal may freeze the disputes and refunds back to people as at that point they are totally on the line for all refunds with no recourse for getting the funds back. I have seen issues like this first hand, where a product or service we paid for was not fully refunded but was instead given back to us at a lowered amount (pennies on the dollar). Aka the vendor owed us say $3500 and they declared bankruptcy, the actual refunded amount the loan company offered us was less than half that.

So Anime Island disappearing into the abyss (without a post or email notice or anything) certainly does have it's benefits for the time being, now if they declare bankruptcy then everything changes, as PayPal may wait it out to see if the company includes each customer as a creditor (this saves PayPal untold amounts of money). Remember PayPal is out for itself and these refund limits (180 days) are their limits alone, it is them not wanting to refund you the money (whether AI owes it to them or not, PayPal is in the business of making money not refunding customers). It wasn't too long ago (about 2-3 yrs ago) that PayPal would only refund back to 45 days, after years of people complaining and them getting disputes thru credit card companies, they begrudgingly moved the refund date back to 180 days. I do not believe for a second these people on here thinking a IC3 report or a BBB report are going to work to get anything further back from PayPal (if you are over 180 days) I cannot find a single instance of anyone online, nor any post via reddit or PayPal forums ever even mentioning being refunded (BY PAYPAL themselves) over 180 days, only a bank or credit card company dispute over that time limit has forced their hand.

I would suggest to anyone waiting to see if AI comes back (LOL they aren't at this point) or for any other reason they didn't yet file a dispute, file your disputes/claims asap in case things change in the short term at which point we are subject to PayPal not wanting to refund anyone further or them offering lowered amounts. AI posting or not should have no sway on your decision to file a dispute right now (not tomorrow or next week), they are gone, lets get back to talking about figures and beyond this mess.

Oh no, I'm definitely not trying excusing their behaviour. They still took your money. Just saying, since they seemed to have given SOME refunds, that what might've happened.

riringo (8 days ago) #27098800Tbh I think AI just didn't have the actual money to fully refund everyone anymore, so they decided to quietly let the institutions handle the refunds since PP/CC/banks have to be able to refund their customers regardless of if AI's own account is frozen/inaccessible.
That's the nicest response to being robbed I've ever heard.

Ose_93 (9 days ago) #27057597I know how you feel. I tried giving them the benefit of the doubt that they might have been taking a few days to go through emails, but I sent my first email as soon as the first blog about Anime Island was made.
And after emailing them a second time and still not getting any response at all, it was just really upsetting. They're going to be responsible for refunding people anyway, so they should have at least gotten back to us.
But I feel as if the reason they didn't email everyone who had unfulfilled orders was because they were hoping some of the people with older orders may have forgotten that they had orders at all.
Not communicating is just really fishy. Even MH Toyshop at least had a statement on their site when they went down. Anime Island always just had "Under Maintenance" before the whole site went down.
But best of luck with your dispute as well! I hope you didn't have too many placed.

Tbh I think AI just didn't have the actual money to fully refund everyone anymore, so they decided to quietly let the institutions handle the refunds since PP/CC/banks have to be able to refund their customers regardless of if AI's own account is frozen/inaccessible.

angelbott (8 days ago) #27065730i used pp for MHtoyshop and still don't get my refund..If you don't mind me asking, how did the process for that go?

Did you file a claim and then PayPal told you that you lost the case?

I called my bank about the refunds first, and they told me to go through PayPal for the orders that fit within their range since they were the middlemen of those transactions.

But they also told me that I should contact them again if PayPal was not being helpful and that they would try to work things out for me.
