October Loot-It's Mikan-tastic!

victorvipervictorviper14 days agoLoot
October's loot has some highly anticipated items, including an old figure from an obscure anime, a figure of one of my favorite characters, and a trio of items of everyone's favorite imouto, Mikan Yuuki. Sounds interesting, right? One of the figures in this month's haul has some cast-off features, so be careful with those spoiler tags if you want to keep it relatively SFW...

October's loot arrived the other day when I wasn't home, necessitating a trip to the post office. I knew that I was going to have a long day in the office the next day, and I was certain I wouldn't be able to sneak away for half an hour to pick it up, so I had to make an 8:30 a.m. run to the post office before going to work. My swag then sat in purgatory in the car all day, but after a pretty hectic day in the office, it was nice to go home and unbox a nice little pile of loot. The spoils of a hard day's work, I figure...

AmiAmi's October postcard not surprisingly features Amico and Lilco in Halloween mode. Their hair accessories are so cute :).

First up is a rather obscure figure that nonetheless checks several of my moe boxes, Organic's Marin Nonomura ITEM #6893 released all the way back in 2005.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590038.jpeg

Marin is the titular character from an old hentai anime, Soreyuke Marin-Chan (localized in North America by Kitty Media as Marine a Go Go), and Marin-Chan is probably best known these days for being directed by Masami Obari. Obari was fairly prolific in the 90's and 00's, directing well-known (but not always well-reviewed!) titles such as Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture as well as the mecha anime Gravion. He also directed a number of hentai anime, and the popular opinion seems to be that his hentai works (Marin-Chan, Angel Blade, Viper GTS) are actually a lot better than the more conventional titles which he directed.

Anyway, I digress. Marin is portrayed as a cute and voluptuous young lady who is also extremely naive and ditzy, and I think this figure captures those elements of her personality pretty well. Further, the tone of Soreyuke Marin-Chan is pretty light-hearted as far as hentai titles go (part of the reason why I liked it) and so her little smile is also appropriate.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590047.jpeg

I like her huge braids :). The thong also checks one of my moe boxes.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590051.jpeg

Looking through the database ENTRY #4957, I was surprised to see just how many different figures and GK's of Marin are out there. That's kind of unusual for a character from a hentai anime not named Bible Black.

Next up is a figure of one of my favorite characters, A-Plus' "Beer Girl" Super Pochaco ITEM #197427.

I'd had my eye on this figure for quite a while but I kind of dallied around since I'd never bought an A-Plus figure before and some of the user photos gave me pause about the overall quality of the figure. However, I gave in since we haven't had much in the way of new Pochaco figures lately, and I suppose I needed a little Pochaco fix :). The price of this figure has also been declining a little bit in the aftermarket, so I decided that I should get her the next time I had the chance, and I'm glad I did. She's got some pretty obvious flaws, but A-Plus did a good job capturing Pochaco's cute and perky personality.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590172.jpeg

I also like how they didn't wildly overexaggerate her proportions. The best Pochaco figures IMO depict her as cute and a little bit thick in all the right places without going overboard, and A-Plus did just fine in that regard. She's also gigantic which I view as a big plus!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590175.jpeg

This might be a weird thing to say, but if anything, A-Plus might have made Pochaco's butt a little too *small*. I also like the skirt that doesn't really cover up anything :).

A-Plus also allows Pochaco's top to be cast off using a rather clever magnetic chest piece, and for some strange reason, Pochaco looks very natural slinging beers with her top off :).

I have some completionist tendencies, so next up is an item that completes a set of one of my favorite figure lines, Kotobukiya's Hibiki Ganaha ITEM #120682.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590284.jpeg

For a while, Kotobukiya was really churning out these Angelic Island iDOLM@STER figures, and I've long had Miki ITEM #98895, Yayoi ITEM #118116, Haruka ITEM #98896, Yukiho ITEM #143700, and Makoto ITEM #98668 on my shelf, but for some reason, I'd never gotten around to completing the set with Hibiki. However, AmiAmi has listed several of these lately at a good price and so I could no longer justify not completing the set.

I like the box design Kotobukiya used for these figures, as the autograph and the little data sheet for the character are kind of neat. I didn't realize that Hibiki's birthday was in October, so I guess it's sort of appropriate that I bought the figure this month :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590292.jpeg

I always kind of wondered how Hibiki's pet hamster Hamzou attached to her head, but he's magnetic and so Hibiki can easily be displayed with or without him. I also never really paid attention before to the fact that Hamzou is mimicking Hibiki's pose. That's pretty cute!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590303.jpeg

There are thousands of beach figures out there, and one can make a pretty good argument that 95% of them are for all purposes identical, but I've always thought this line went above and beyond the generic "cute girl in a swimsuit" concept. While keeping common design elements, all the girls' swimsuits are slightly different and their outfits and poses really complement their personalities. The short shorts with the drawstring give Hibiki a sporty look, and the saluting pose reflects her lively and quirky personality.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590306.jpeg

I promised a trio of items of Mikan Yuuki, and so next up is a pair of Mikan figures, ITEM #583727 and ITEM #583728, from FuRyu's "Noodle Stopper" line. I couldn't quite decide if I wanted to preorder the green version or the white one, but AmiAmi made my choice for me when they only offered up these two figures for preorder as a set...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590455.jpeg

If you're unfamiliar with this line of figures, these Noodle Stoppers are meant to be posed sitting down (on the lid of your cup of ramen noodles), and they are quite small (approximately 1/10 scale).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590458.jpeg

As a prize figure, Mikan has her share of flaws. You can see a mold line on her arm just above her armpit, and there's a pretty big gap where her bikini top meets her chest, but it's an inexpensive figure, and she looks kind of cool sitting with her legs draped over the shelf above my desk.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590460.jpeg

The last item in this month's loot is another Mikan figure, and one which I've really been looking forward to, Max Factory's ITEM #464638.

I like the bold color scheme used on the box! Even though Mikan is a large 1/6 scale figure, the box was much lighter than I expected.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590555.jpeg

While there was never any serious possibility of me *not* preordering this figure, I was a little concerned about how Mikan's face in the source PICTURE #589975 illustration would translate into figure form, and some of the prototype shots looked a little bit off, but the finished product turned out just fine. Her expression IMO suggests she's being a little bit pouty but at the same time there's a smile trying to emerge. It seems pretty in character for Mikan.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509590566.jpeg

I also think her pose is very cute, the way she's leaning forward a little bit and fiddling with her hair.

She's so pretty! My favorite thing about Mikan's character design is her pretty amber eyes, and maybe this is the reason why Kentaro Yabuki opted to go with yellow for the color of Mikan's outfit in the original illustration PICTURE #1337157 that inspired this line of figures.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1509707566.jpeg

Mikan :).

I'm really enjoying this figure line, and Max Factory did a great job with Mikan. Because I've been busy with work, I've been a little remiss lately with my figure reviewing duties, but hopefully I'll have time this weekend to get working on a review of Mikan. Now, the waiting begins for Max Factory to make Mikan's BFF Yami from this line!

That's it for October's loot, and so as usual...

Maakie (1 day ago) #28707346Yeah those older GK's are almost impossible to get, unless you are lucky to find one in auction. I thought it was an interesting mash-up! And hehe I got an extra reminder of Comic Party because I was writing blog/35243 during the time I left the previous comment! ^^ It's too bad Yuu only has GK's, ITEM #39458 would have been very nice made as a prepainted figure!

Yuu might be my favorite character from Comic Party, so I would love to have a figure of the Hot Springs Panda, but as you said only GK's of that character ever got made. That GK you linked would have made a great prepainted figure! It's kind of weird, since Kotobukiya made plenty of figures from that franchise.

victorviper (4 days ago) #28596776The Marin as Asuka figure is sort of cool, but it's probably impossible to come by these days. I hadn't thought about it, but you are quite correct that at a glance Marin and Yuu Inagawa do have some common features, although Yuu is quite a bit less buxom. It's good to see that someone else other than me still knows the Comic Party franchise and characters!
With the Hibiki figure, it's always funny to notice some quirky little feature of a figure that you'd just never noticed before :).

Maakie (4 days ago) #28592105Hrm, never saw that Marin-Chan figure before, my brain thought it was ENTRY #3634 for a second when I saw your first picture of the box. Must be the big brown hair and round face... *cough* And wow, you're right. There are so much figures of Marin-chan. o.o This one is interesting for you ITEM #562225 ? :D
Also Hamzou doing the same pose as Hibiki is so cute! I also never noticed that before and I have seen that figure many times!

victorviper (4 days ago) #28596545I really like the design of some of those FREEing S-style figures, but at 1/12 scale they're just so tiny!
I do agree it is tiny. I didn't realized it was until after I open the box. Still new into collecting. I'm glad though it was 50% off as I felt paying full price for this would't be worth it for me.

solluxcaptor (13 days ago) #28150303Those Mikan figures are SO cute, she's adorable! That's the first noodle stopper figure I've actually liked.

I only own a couple other of these noodle stopper figures, mainly because I like larger scale figures and they are so tiny, but I figured that with the small scale, Mikan would be perfect in size for a little empty spot in the shelf above my desk, and she was!
