Did I REALLY just get a figure for free?

UPDATE: I got a negative PayPal balance lol D: no free figure for me :(

Today’s blog post is a bit of a funny one.

So Monday I ordered my fav JRPG character as a statue from Mandarake. Magnolia Arch from Bravely Second.

It costed me 130 AUD. Ok, I thought I’ll pay with PayPal. Next thing I know I was shopping at the mall for my Twitch streaming equipment and spent WAY too much. So basically Magnolia wasn’t even deducted from my bank yet and I already spent over without realising.

I checked with my bank. I noticed the money I spent for Magnolia was RETURNED TO ME. With a bit of anxiety, I quickly contacted Mandarake to say I wanted to return my figure as the money I spent was handed back by the bank cause of overdraft. I didn’t want to get into shit you know?

Being the lovely Mandarake however, told me I should keep it cause it’ll be too much of a hassle to get with the higher ups there.

I BASICALLY GOT A FUCKING $100 FIGURE FOR FREE BY ACCIDENT!!!!

Woe is me, woe is me.

It never happens, mate. I had something similar with Ebay and no, you never get figures for free. :-)

Shikaree (1 month ago) #28032206If it happened in that order, shouldn't the PayPal transaction have been charged first? The "more purchases" should've caused the overdraft instead of the PayPal transaction.
I only fund PayPal with CC and virtually the only thing I pay with checking is my CC bill. So honestly don't know much about the details of how debit transactions work. xP

Should've, yes. But it is possible for charges to stay pending for weeks if the merchant decides to drag their feet.

As for the difference between paying Paypal with a debit/bank versus credit card: you're paying the middle-man using funds in your bank account via ETF/ACH on one hand, and letting the banks pay the middle-man and then you paying back the borrowed amount at the end of your statement period on the other.

wewe (1 month ago) #28031818As I feared. This is probably what happened:
1.You paid SAHRA through Paypal, whom shipped with tracking, fufilling their seller duties.
2.You overdrafted your bank account with more purchases, and the bank subsequently declined the current transactions, including the Paypal one.
3.Paypal receives the chargeback from the bank regarding your transaction with SAHRA.
4.As it wasn't due to fraud or a dispute through paypal, seller protection stands and SAHRA still keeps their earnings.
5.Paypal, now at a loss, will be penalizing your paypal account with the balance owed.

What precisely happened depends on how you funded your PayPal payment and what kind of account you're talking about that "ran out of money".

In either case, I'm surprised that the bank (credit card bank or retail bank) authorized the hold/payment when there were insufficient funds. If it's CC, I would be surprised if Mandarake shipped before payment settled.

Info is unclear, but seems to sound like your bank is run by amateurs.

wewe (1 month ago) #28031187According to the broken english email, sounds like they already got the payment and have yet to hear anything from their bank about a reversal, hence they told you that there's no reason for you to return the item.
I'd wait a bit before celebrating, as pending charges have been known to disappear and reappear once posted.
