Suigintou Rozen Maiden GK (Garage Kit) Project

MaakieMaakie15 days agoTutorial
Hello all! It's been a while since I've had time to work on a Garage Kit, which is why this one was created over a long period of time! The experience of this kit was very strange, it started off very good and went downhill fast after that. I love the GK hobby, so I do not mean to scare people off from this hobby. Just wanted to let you know I won't sugarcoat my experiences, you are warned! The process of this kit was also a very good learning experience for myself.

This time I was also visiting my good friend M. and working at her place. She is into Warhammer so we both work on our own things while borrowing a lot of materials from each other! The kit I painted this time was one from Suigintou from Rozen Maiden made by T's System ITEM #12274 . This kit is an older re-cast I had stored for a while, from a famous bootleg store which I shall not name. They seem to have improved their quality nowadays, but I don't buy there anymore or recommend buying there! There are lots of neglected real GK's you can get for cheap on Yahoo! Auctions and Suruga-Ya, so please support those!

Anyway, I'm not an expert on GK's and I hand paint. I do a kit for fun every once in a while, with not being too nitpicky, I just see it as a relaxing hobby. I know some things can look pretty crude close-up, just to warn you before you begin reading this blog (which is also why I don't take GK commissions, please don't ask, you will be disappointed lol).

Preparation

As with most Garage Kits, this kit also needed a lot of preparation before the painting could take place! I started off with removing leftover tabs and resin.

This kit had a lot of big parts!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xBA2LLoX0C4/VhqjgVNtg0I/AAAAAAAADyo/cQWlKSir46k/s648-Ic42/IMG_5288.JPG

This was also the first time I accidentally broke a piece of a kit while making the preparations. This is a part from one of her wings. I tried to repair it the best I could...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pI3QLEu52Vw/VhqjgXcqQ8I/AAAAAAAADy0/7Pj2uMmo-_s/s648-Ic42/IMG_5289.JPG

There were also a lot of crazy leftovers like the one in this picture. The leftover tab you see on the bottom left completely covers the frill details you see on the right. After this picture I filed it the best I could (forgot to take pictures of it), but I didn't want to risk to try and make the holes in there, because I made the resin so thin, I was afraid of causing breakages.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dGuBjZgCyQw/Vhqjgn1TRGI/AAAAAAAADzE/D_raA67Ce3g/s648-Ic42/IMG_5291.JPG

Now, let's take a moment to enjoy the details this kit has! I absolutely love how the top part of her dress looks!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ma1SVG90dRg/Vhqjg9YACeI/AAAAAAAADzE/TKtF4yi8NH8/s648-Ic42/IMG_5292.JPG

And now let's look at some stuff I need to clean again...the size and amount of leftover tabs on this kit were crazy!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kJTs1WOebhA/VhqjhF4HpmI/AAAAAAAADzU/FxKbkTsP6cI/s648-Ic42/IMG_5294.JPG

After day 1 of removing...and that's not even all of the stuff!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TO_mB7HwX40/VhqjhR2PvwI/AAAAAAAADyg/dK1KFxYvdn0/s648-Ic42/IMG_5295.JPG

Quite some time later I came to the point were all the parts were ready to get cleaned and ready to get undercoated! I think this is also the kit with the biggest amount of part I've made so far.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fvoUHPMkomA/Vhqjh9ILiAI/AAAAAAAADzU/yYt_QJ74oYQ/s648-Ic42/IMG_5298.JPG

Preparing for undercoating! Almost everyhting will get a white undercoat with the exception of the parts that will be fully black.

Painting time!

Now the fun part starts!

With kits I always start with the most exciting color...white! View spoilerHide spoiler

I'm sorry

There was lots of white to paint with this kit!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DJwOR9hRIsc/Vhqjizl6NQI/AAAAAAAADzE/vouUL6_ZcYk/s648-Ic42/IMG_5301.JPG

Mixing the color of Suigintou's hair was quite a task. I didn't want to go for the "default" Suigintou color and tried to come up with a bit of my own. In the beginning I wasn't very pleased with this color, but it grew on me after I led it dry overnight and seeing it again the next morning.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JKVmYSPp-Wg/Vhqjj2frFKI/AAAAAAAADzE/4zX0oiC9fwo/s648-Ic42/IMG_5303.JPG

I decided to start with the biggest parts first, of which after her bloomers, her big dress is also one of them. I decided to go for a simple dark purple. I made this picture to show how important it is to water down your paints and paint lots of layers on top of eachother while making a garage kit!

So much purple! Luckily it's one of my favorite colors, so I didn't mind of course.

I sort-of liked the look of only one layer of golden paint for the sword, but wanted to make it bright gold! I really like the design of the sword.

A step-by-step collage of me painting the eyes in many layered colors. After these pictures I did a small bit more of fixing up. This is my first time trying this technique, and while I think it maybe looks a bit too crude, I have learned a lot from it for the next kit I will do! Also I need to thin more, more and more to keep the streaks low! Which I also promise will look better on my next kit! :)

I always like to make silly details at parts that are (almost) not visible. Did you know that Suigintou actually wears panties with cute hearts on them? Shhh, don't tell anyone!

Unrelated to GK's, but my friend and I love to cook, so we made many nice snacks and dinner plates while hanging out together. Some pictures are in the spoiler!View spoilerHide spoiler

I had painted Suigintou's hair a while ago, but wasn't completely satisfied with the color, I thought it was too grey. So I decided on a new mixture with a bit of purple mixed in it. I think this is a lot better! (See bottom right for difference.)

There were some parts I had to make from scratch. The sword being one of them. On my earlier picture you can see I had the sword undercoated, but I lost it! I'm still beating myself up over this, how is that possible! If I would have lost a small ribbon or something, well okay, that could happen, but the whole sword?! Siggghhh... I seem to have lost it during or after undercoating.

Luckily as a cosplayer I have a ton of materials at hand at all times. So the sword will have a quick mock-up from craft foam, while I hope to still find the real one someday!

I had this really nice idea for a base, in which Suigintou stands inbetween a pile of feathers.

The base will be two Nutella-lids on top of each other, with in the hollow places some heavy chains to give it stability.

Putting her dress together was a bit frustrating. The parts were so HUGE and heavy and they also didn't perfectly line up at the bottom of het dress. Perfectly lined up, they would leave no space for the black lace at the front. I tried fitting this kit beforehand and was pretty surprised. Did washing and holding the parts of the kit so much, made some parts change their shape?

Figure fully assembled! It was time for me to leave, so I left Suigintou drying like this at my friends' place, and we would meet up again in a few weeks.

After a long break

Now here comes the 'this is where it all went downhill' part of making this kit. I took a long break, and then I mean really really long (over 1,5 years) of making this kit. Me and my friend still met up every now and then, but we were both personally too busy to plan a crafting week(end) to actually work on our projects. When I met with her the next time, I boxed up Suigintou and took her with me. Big mistake, as I probably should have coated this figure before taking her with me.

When after my long absence of working/seeing the kit and also moving houses inbetween this time, I grabbed my Suigintou, there was lots of damage I did not expect to the paint! I quickly disassembled some bigger parts of her and below you can see the 'damage' I had to work with.

The damage in the paint looked like stained glue, but that did not make sense, as I did not use glue at the places where you see the glue spots. You see also a bit of these 'spots damage' on the side of the base. The only logical explanation that I have is that there was weather influence (the kit got too hot or too cold while being transported) that targetted the paint, but even that seems far-fetched as my other finished painted kits and my prepainted PVC all came out of the move without damage. I did have to move this figure around a lot, but I had her stored in a shoebox that was closed from all sides. My guess is that I really should have sealed her paints before storing her, stupid me!

Ranting aside, I tried my best to make this kit look reprenstable. I really blamed myself for not working on (and not checking on) this kit in such a long time. Luckily I can already tell you that for my next kit, there won't be such a huge timespan difference inbetween sessions of painting her. And also I now know I have to watch out with unsealed paints. I kept them unsealed, because I was planning on pastel shading this kit, but I really should not have done that...

I decided to first focus on finishing her base, before cleaning up and improving Suigintou herself. Here you see some parts of the base that will help in the height of the feathers, being worked on.

At this point I was doubting if I should undercoat and re-paint the wings for a 'heavier' black or keep her this way. I ended up going for the last option as I thought it looked quite nice already.

Luckily there was barely damage at the top part of this figure. I only needed to re-paint some parts of her coat and back wings. It was almost like the weird staining was specifically targetting the black and purple paints.

I forgot to take progress pictures of my 'placeholder' sword, but here is a test-fit with all the parts.

The sword was made of a quick piece of foam with a bit of undercoat. On purpose I did not spend much time on it, as I was hoping to find the missing sword when I got home. After I got home with this kit, I also pinned both her upper body and her foot in the base, so the figure had less of a 'leaning' pose than you see here.

Finished figure

I started working on this kit with a positive note, but was left with a bit of a bitter aftertaste. I do not dislike my result, but I just know that I could have made it a lot cleaner. I had planned to make this my first kit where I try out pastel shading, but skipped on this because of the problems I had when I grabbed the kit for the second time. But I promise you that I will go very wild with shading on my next GK!

Without further rambling, enjoy the pictures of the end result!

I'm personally most pleased with how her face and the base turned out. I do hope to find her sword hidden somewhere in my figure storage someday. I would love to actually 'finish' this kit and the placeholder sword looks horrible, lol! But as you can maybe understand I don't feel the motivation right now to improve on all the small mistakes this one has now. Working to get that damage almost invisble was not fun and you can still see a bit of random spots if you look closely at the pictures.

Next Garage Kit

While waiting for some parts of Suigintou to dry (especially the base), I made a small start on my next GK! And I can already tell you with how this kit is going so far, this won't be such a horror story as my Suigintou kit!

Can you guess which one this will be?

It's the super cutie Yurie ITEM #26495 ! I'm a bit scared for the clear parts she comes with, but I'm excited to try and work with that too!

I hope you enjoyed reading this, see you at my next blog! Which will probably be either a loot post or a food review!

Maybe you can replace the sword by glueing some stripes of polystyrene sheet together and shape it. It's very easy to work with.
Also some nice brushes can help a lot.(Windsor & Newton series 7 are really good) And always use the biggest size of brush you are able to control on a surface. This minimizes brush strokes :)
Looking forward to see your bubba kit :)

I actually hope to find the sword someday. I'm pretty sure it fell out of the box I was storing her in and it's loose somewhere else between the stored part of my collection. TT^TT

I have written down those names of brushes, thank you! Right now my brushes are a huge mix-and-match from professional, mid-range and cheap brushes, acquired in the last 10 years of my life lol.

Thanks! :D When it's done, I will write a blog about that kit too!

Maakie (13 days ago) #28310079Thanks! Yeah, I'm just sad those problems even took place... ^^'' The figure had some minimal putty adjustments, but not on the parts where the staining happened. So to me it looks like it's something with the glue, but the situation is still so strange...
Haha, yeah people are not so happy with the new version of this website. xD Give it some time, I think they will improve it in a while... :P

DocMonkey (14 days ago) #28276580Hi :)
It's a nice looking result after all the problems you had to solve.
I've never seen those strange spots before.
Is there something under the primer? Putty or something like that?
You will have less problems with your next project as you gained a lot of experience with this one.
p.s. Man this sites comment function sucks... had to write it 3 times until it worked properly...

victorviper (14 days ago) #28254245Nice work, particularly with the feather base.
I've always kind of wanted to try my hand at building a GK, but I don't know if I have the patience. I can't imagine how long it must have taken to prep all those little ribbons!
It'll be interesting to see how Yurie turns out. It seems like that kit would be comparatively simple compared to this one, but what do I know...

Thanks for liking it! :) Although the project had a big impact on me in the last phase, I can't dislike my outcome. ;) I just am a bit disappointed, because I know it could have been more.

You can always pick up a cheap/simple kit whenever you do an next order on Mandarake, Yahoo! Auction, Suruga-ya or the like. I see a lot of 'generic' schoolgirls on 1/6-1/8 scale going for prices like 1-2K. You won't waste a lot of money if it turns out GK's are not for you. If you already own some paints and the other basic tools, even if they are simple/low budget ones, that would also help in trying out. You can always invest in more expensive materials if you end up liking it. :)

Except for the see-through parts and the tiny spirits, Yurie is indeed a lot more simple than this kit. My challenge will be in shading her, which I am pretty new to. So I think it's a good one to do next! :)
