Doujin Work - Kitano Sora - 1/10 scale figure by Wave

MaakieMaakie25 days agoReview
! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

This is a review of a figure in a bikini, which can be considered NSFW !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Kitano Sora ENTRY #10505 from Doujin Work ENTRY #10142 ! This figure ITEM #4927 is made by Wave ENTRY #7670 . Wave is very well known for their 1/10 Beach Queen line, but it's very important to note that this figure is not a Beach Queen! She is a figure from the advertised-as-higher-quality-line TreasureFigureCollection, coincidentally also in 1/10 scale.

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Doujin work is a 4koma comedy manga that was later adapted into a 12-episode anime. The series follows a girl called Najimi who wants to become big in the doujin-world! Sora is one of the people she meets at the conventions where she sells doujins. Sora herself is an amazing artist and publishes her her own doujinshi at only 11 years old. Is that even possible in the real world? She also loves to cosplay at the conventions she attends.

The reason why and how I got her

I saw Doujin Work when the anime was just released, about 10 years ago. The manga I have never read. A few years after watching the anime, I was browsing a local sales forum and saw someone selling Sora! I remember of it thinking as quite a good deal back then, so I bought her without researching the figure itself (only later I found out I highly overpaid for her, but oh well).

Original art

As far as I remember, and from what I could find online, Sora doesn't wear this specific swimsuit in the anime or manga series. Wave is known for designing their own swimstuis in their Beach Queens figure line, so there is a high chance this swimsuit doesn't have a specific origin.

For reference to the figure, I will look at both her manga and anime design.

Manga look

Sora's look in the manga and anime is very different from eachother. I would say the figure's face is more based on her manga-look and her haircut on her anime design.

A very cute box, the design reminds me of my other non-Beach Queen Wave figure: Komugi ITEM #12994 . The box has a really big window and there is a lot of colorful design! It's a slightly bit disappointing that there are only pictures of the figure on the box and no artwork.

First Look

Before I start this review, it's important to notice that this figure has been in storage for inbetween 4 and 5 years. This is my first time unboxing her since then.

The inside of the blister was already yellowed with this figure when I bought her. As far as I know my years of storing her haven't worsened the discoloring. But something more interesting is how her feet pegs got loose from the base during this time. I was a bit scared of her fitting on the base again. The loose block of blister that lies now in the box, first was inbetween her feet. Seems like it fell off when the figure was moved around. Lesson learned to check for things like that in the future, if the scenario happens again where I have to store figures for multiple years.

Personal rambling aside, it's nice to see the big space there is to get a look at her cute face!

The figure comes with only two pieces: the figure itself and the base.

Her pose might seem a bit stiff at first, but it's very cute and pretty unique for a bikini figure. It's like she's modelling on a runway!

You might also already notice one pretty big thing with this figure here: The difference in skin tone between her upper and lower body. When I got her I checked pictures from other people online and it seems like a manufacturing error, the previous owner is a well-known collector here and also let me know she kept the figure out of sunlight. The pictures for this review made it stand out more than it looks in real life, you can see the difference between these pictures and the video.

Looking at all the details!

So, let's take a look a bit more up close from this cutie! Keep in mind this figure is almost 10 years old, which will be taken into consideration while reviewing.

Sora's face stands out the most. Her eyes are huge and she has adorable blushes on her cheeks. The eyes are decals with an amazing shine to them (even more noticeable in person). This type of shine I rarely even see with more recent figures! Her open mouth is sculpted quite well, but looks a bit weird from some angles.

Then we get to her hair which I will be less positive about unfortunately. The sculpting is okay for a figure of this age, but it seems like some dust and/or dirt has attached itself to her hair during the painting process and some parts don't look smooth.

On top of her head is one paint scuff near the seamline of her hair. The seamline is also quite big, but can easily be ignored if you imagine it being the parting line for her hairdo.

The back of Sora's hair shows the most details and I think the tips look pretty good. There is a bit of shading, where you can see a darker color at the bottom of her hair.

Sora has a very petite body. It looks maybe a bit too skinny from some angles, but that could also just be my personal taste. That aside, the bikini she is wearing looks amazing on her! The bikini design itself is quite simple, but the shading on it is very nice with many gradients of pink.

The ribbons on the back of her bikini top are sculpted and painted very well! I was amazed at this, as I have seen a lot more recent figures with worse looking bows!

I also like that there went some effort into the sculpting of her back. You can see her shoulderbones a bit, which looks especially realistic with the movement of her left arm.

Both the front and back of her bikini bottom don't show a lot of details of what's underneath (a common thing with bikini figures, you can only see a slight shape of her butt cheeks. The low-detail was done on purpose I think, considering the age of this character and the source material being all-ages.

There is quite a lot of skin tone shading added between her fingernails, on her wrist and inside her elbow. It looks good, but is maybe a bit too much. Especially on above picture, you can see that some of the shading has also come on a few other spots of her arm (I guess the shading was all airbrushed), making it look a bit like she has dirt on her arm.

Her legs look pretty good by itself, they are nicely shaded; but as earlier mentioned, we have come to the worst point of this figure. The huge difference between the skin tone on her upper and lower body. It was like both halves of this figure were made in completely different factories! It's strange that something like that passed quality control. Looking at her prototype pictures, it seems like the upper body is too pale and everything was supposed to look like her legs. For me personally the legs stand out more, but it's actually the upper body at fault!

I do have to add here, that the heavy light of my photography set-up make it look a bit worse than it actually is when you look at it with your own eyes from a normal viewing distance. Below you will find a picture of when I had her displayed in my collection.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Maakie1355573681.jpeg?.jpg

Also from a distance and with lower lighting you can see a difference in skin tone (especially near her knees), but having her displayed like this in a full detolf shelf, makes the differences a lot less glaring. It's also a 'once you've see it'-thing. If I hadn't pointed out this skin tone difference, most people would probably see nothing wrong with above picture. It is something to keep in mind if you plan on purchasing this figure!

The base is a very big, generic blue disc with copyright markings in the middle. What I do like is that the pegs for her feet are actually sculpted after her feet, you can even see the toes on it! No random circles or rectangles, this makes them blend very nicely with the base.

The Points

Positive
- Very cute posing
- Adorable face

Neutral
- Some paint is a bit messy, like her hair and some of the shading can be really hard to ignore.

Negative
- Skin tone difference between upper and lower body.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
The sculpting is especially nice for a figure of this age. I can especially appreciate the details that went into her back sculpt.

Painting 6/10
There are a bunch of letdowns in the paint, which mainly can be pointed to bad quality control. There are some small mishaps in her hair and her body shading, but the worst part is the huge difference in skin tone between her upper and lower body.

Posing 8/10
The posing may seem a bit stiff or bland at first, but the more I look at it, the more I appreciate it! It looks like she is walking a runway model look for you and she looks so happy and cute in doing so!

Base 7/10
Pretty basic and it had to be big to fit her leg posing. I like that there are specific foot-shaped pegs instead of generic shaped pegs.

Packaging 8/10
Cute and compact packaging, but would have liked it if there was artwork on the box.

Enjoyment 7/10
I liked her quite a bit in my collection. She was a nice fit with my small beach display! I decided to put her up for sale because of the downsizing of my collection. If it wasn't for that, I would probably still have her displayed in a now more extensive beach scene!

Conclusion

This is quite a cute and unique bikini figure for people that are into beach/swimsuit-themed figures in general and don't mind having older figures. If you are a fan of this character, it's also the only figure out there, so a must buy for you! If you like Doujin Work as a series, you could get the trio of the main girls (see ITEM #2570 and ITEM #2695 ) probably for a nice price for all three together, with only Tsuyuri being the more rare and expensive one and the others being the same or lower than their release price.

Availability

Sora seems to be the least rare from the Doujin Works figures and regularly pops up for sale for prices around 2K-4K yen depending on condition on Japanese sites. As for local sales, I mainly see her go for around $30-40 opened.

And to finish it!

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be about another old (and maybe forgotten) figure, Kusachiho's ITEM #1779 figure from Binzume Yousei made by Yamato.

yurii (25 days ago) #28675455Cute figure! She looks pretty good considering the age.
But i must agree about the cheeto legs, I wonder if it was like that new or a result of aging.

There is a lot more shading on her than other figures from this age. She's definitely a good one from this era!

I was so scared of it being discoloration, so after I unboxed her I started checking older pictures I made of her, but it was already there when I had her on display back then. :( The picture of her in a detolf in my blog is 4-5 years old. Considering this figure has been stored in a place without daylight for almost half her lifetime, it is not possible it happened while in storage. :/ It's just...the biggest minus point of this whole figure. *sigh* You can check out this review blog/17530 mentioned by VICTORVIPER below. Apparently this is a common thing with this manufacturer...strange!

Thank you! :D Her posing is so adorable!

victorviper (25 days ago) #28642739I'm with you on 4-panel manga, as I too couldn't get through all of Lucky Star. I did manage to get through all of K-On!, though; the fact that K-On! was only 4 volumes long probably helped.
I've always liked Comic Party. It's an anime you'd expect to be thrown-together and terrible, given its visual novel origin, but the anime was really well-done and the characters are memorable. I always like to watch the Christmas episode this time of year, too.
Unfortunately, the sequel to Comic Party wasn't very good, but I just sort of pretend it doesn't exist :).

I think I made it up until volume 3 or 4 of Lucky Star, but I have sold them (I try to limit my manga collection to full series or one shots mostly nowadays). Never tried K-ON!, but wasn't really planning to. :')

I didn't even know there was a sequal. *googles* Comic Party Revolution? I only watched the first anime when it was pretty new and enjoyed it back then. Never rewatched it though, maybe I should!

Maakie (25 days ago) #28641874Yeah, her posing is just so cute~!
Comic Party is a well-known classic in that genre here. A lot of people think it's the same series as Doujin Work, which is not that strange! And interesting that you point out that release! For me, most 4koma series get repetitive after a while. I can read a few volumes of it, but never collected a long 4koma series, not even Lucky Star.
And oh wow, I forgot that figure was from Wave too! And also interesting that the it's only halfway the thighs and down with your figure being the darker skin tone. They must have different departments/factories for the parts, because I can't imagine this being a coincidence!

victorviper (25 days ago) #28641405A very cute figure.
For a while, there were all kinds of anime and manga about anime and manga being made, and a think Dojin Work was one of the lesser-known titles among these meta-anime, but I remember liking it. The first volume of the North American DVD release was bundled with the first manga volume, and while I watched all of the anime, I never got around to reading the rest of the manga.
The difference in skin tone between Sora's torso and legs is really weird, but other Wave figures of similar vintage have had similar problems. For example, Elyse ITEM #5864 has a similar issue with her legs.
