Odin Sphere - Velvet - SIF EX - 1/6 - Art of War (Yamato)Odin Sphere - Velvet - SIF EX - 1/6 - Art of War (Yamato)

Velvet - Yamato

Introduction:

Hi, this is my first review. I have inittially three things to say:

- I'm really sorry for my terrible english. Both me and my brother, we never had a real english course. We're obviously not native, and we learned english by ourselves. So, the dictionary can correct my spelling mistakes, but not my grammar. And for that, I'm really sorry.
- My camera isn't that bad. It's a simple Nikon camera, for casual. Not really great, but I think it's not bad either. However the photographer, me, really sucks. I didn't had the correct lightning, didn't had a good background and I really don't understand a thing about cameras. My brother is starting to study it, but it will take time. So, I'm really sorry about the photos.
- I'm not a person that's really goon with spoting flaws, or seein mistakes and things like that... Usually I'm ok with small problems. Maybe I'm still a casual collector. ^_^

With that said, let's go to the review. Oh, you can open the image to see it bigger.

About the Character:

Velvet is a character from the PS2 game Odin Sphere. The game was lauched in May 17 of 2007 in Japan, and May 22 of 2007 in USA, released by Atlus. In Europe it was launched by Square-Enix.
The game didn't sold to much, but became really popular, especially between RPG players. The game is a side-scrooler RPG, where you control, eventually, 5 characters. Each one had his own history wich, in the end, was related with the others. It's heavilly inspired on the Norse Mythology.
Velvet was the princess of the Valentine Kingdom, grandaughter of King Valetine. She is determined to change her fate and her brother's, and the entire world, from her mother foresight. She's strong, gentle, romantic and emotive. However she always has a sad look, knowing that her future is dark. And she's still chainned to her past, always with fear that the same thing could happen again. She had a really troublesome relationship with her granfather, and she was completelly subdued to him.
She's know as Kingdomless Princess and Witch of Elrit. She's in love with Cornelius, prince of Titania. Her Psypher is a chain with the crystal in the ends. Her voice actor is Miyuki Sawashiro(沢城 みゆき) in the japanese voice and Michelle Ruff in the english voice.
In game she's one of the slowest, but her chain makes for it. It's fast and can be used to evade attacks. Besides her long reach makes her an excellent choice to defeat the enemy without even being touched.

Expectation:

When I saw she announced I was really happy. Odin Sphere is one of the games that I like the most. And Velvet is one of my favorites characters. The only thing that I could do was to pre-order her.
However when I was lookin in the internet I saw everyone complaining that Yamato got her. And how Yamato usually screw things up, and things like that. I tried to be not afraid. I knew that she would come out ok, and even if Yamato had screwed sometimes (usually I failed to see the problems. ^_^;;;), I was certain that she would end good.

Package:

http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/207/dscn3895o.jpg

Okay the package isn't the best thing on the market. It's surprisingly small. (Maybe I had a different impression with Alter's Gwendolyn or World is Mine Miku). The box let you see her in the front and has her artwork in the back. The color of the box is purple, which I'm not really sure why they choose that color. It's not an ugly box, but it isn't really beautiful either.
Inside the box she's really good packed. Almost every part of her was covered with plastic. The chain and the base were in a second "session" underneath Velvet.
Even if wasn't that beautiful, it's a good package.

Package: 6/10

Sculpting, Posing and Base:

I know very little about Bubba, except what everyone told me: he's a fantastic artist. Can't say otherwise. Velvet's artwork was beautiful. But Bubba made it even better. It captures in a splendid way her sorrow, her sexiness, her submissivenes and even her gentle manner.

Her sorrow is in her face. The look on her face shows the look that she has almost the entire game: Someone who knows that her fate is to be unhappy.

http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/8076/dscn3915y.jpg
Her hair isn't as detailed as the whole figure, but it doesn't change the overral aspect.

Her sexiness is in the way that this pose stick out her breast and her butt. Her clothe was sexy, and she was sexy in the game, so the pose really suits her.

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/8706/dscn3928c.jpg
Her clothe underneath her breast isn't as detailed as well. I think it's good. ^_^

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/3168/dscn3924.jpg
The clothe is really well done! You can see the movement of the clothe.

Her submissiviness is in the pose itself, "almost" curving to the ground.

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/7829/dscn3899.jpg

And her gentle manner can be seen in the delicacy of her hands and her hair. Her hands are superb. Really detailed, with really well done fingernails. The pose of the hand is really beautiful.

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/3710/dscn3908o.jpg

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/6950/dscn3902.jpg

Maybe I'm seing too much, but even if it's not really a dinamic pose, it's really interesting. It's perfect with the character, and it's really well done.

I have to say that i didn't catch any mold line, or any type of defect within the statue. Everything was perfectly done, and even if I didn't saw any Yamato figure until now, I think that if what people say is true, they really made the best job of their life.

http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/8213/dscn3897a.jpg
This photo is really horrible. Sorry. :(

Her base is really beautiful, and I'm not sure which design I prefer the prototype or this one. Anyway, you have to make sure that she's really fixed in her base. It's a little hard, but if you don't make her well fixed she will have her gravity center of and may fall. Or even lean with time, because her weigths force her down. Of course, I'm no expert on the subject...

A look on the details of the base.

Painting:

Ok,once more, I'm not an expert to see imperfections. And my camera isn't that good, but if someone sees a mistake that I didn't, please, let me now. With that said, the paiting looks perfect to me.
I saw what looked like a mark on one of her leg's line, but I'm not sure.

The shading of the color is perfect. They used a strong shade that really suits her, and makes clear the ilumination.

http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/7879/dscn3927u.jpg
You can also see here that I didn't put her right in the torso. Needed to press a little stronger later to fiz this gap. But it still exist. It is where you separate her in order to remove her skirt.

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/7494/dscn3925.jpg
the shading here is incredible. Really good paiting.

Her fingernails are also really good painted, with a kind of pearl paint.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/2234/dscn3920c.jpg

Her stockings are really good. The paint makes look like a real stockings. Even the lines are well drawn. It has a transparency that is impressive. And the shoes have a shine that matches well.

http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/8665/dscn3906.jpg

The painting in the stars on her head are a little of the place, you can see it in some of the photos. But you can only see it from very near.
Her hair doesn't have the shade that her clothe, what is a shame. But it's still really good paiting.

http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/3348/dscn3919.jpg

One thing that I really like is her face. It's perfectly painted. Her purple eyes, the shadow, the mouth. Everything executed in a divine way. The veil in her head doesn't have so much detail, but as the other thing, it doesn't really bother.

http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/2962/dscn3918.jpg

If you remove her skirt, which is a pain in the ass (and I hope never to do it again, because is worst to have to put the skirt back), you can see her underwear. It's as everything on her, really well done. It's not the usual white panties. It was really made to match her clothe and make her even sexier. And it's really rich in details. The next photos may be NSFW.

http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/5020/dscn3931.jpghttp://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2892/dscn3932.jpg

For the last part her chain. The painting was made so that it looked as an old chain, weathered by time. And her Psypher looks like Gwendolyn's one. I think they used a similar platic.

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/5207/dscn3937g.jpghttp://img301.imageshack.us/img301/2860/dscn3938n.jpghttp://img151.imageshack.us/img151/7060/dscn3939x.jpg

The white thing on the psypher is just cloth, from my cloth. Sorry. :(

Enjoyment:

If a said that I wasn't afraid that she would be good, I would be lying. Everywhere I went I saw people saying: "I tought about getting her, but when I saw it was Yamato's I gave up" and things like that. I had read a good review about Yamato's Cammy, and it said good things, but I never saw anything that they made in person. So I was afraid. Specially because Gwendolyn is so well done, it would be a shame to see a character that good, with a pose so fantastic to go waste.
In the end my bet turned out to be good. I see people saying that maybe Alter decides to make their own Velvet, well, it will be dificult. It will be hard to find a pose so fitting with her, and they'll have to make a wonderful job. I know that they can, I saw their Gwendolyn.

Anyway, getting a perfect figure from a game that I really love, from a character that I really adore is the perfect enjoyment. She's on the highest level a figure can get in my taste. And I'll cherish her because she really deserve it.

Enjoyment:10/10

Sorry for using to much photos. And if you see any error in my english or in what I said, please, let me know. In my blog I posted this review in portuguese, if anyone prefer to read it this way.

I agree with this good and complete review, and we see the only thing that decrease the final notation is the box (but his small size is a good thing to allow SAL ^^), so the figure is really marvelous! It's probably my most favorite possessed figure at the moment =^)
(maybe the announced Gwendolyn from Yamato will be such beautiful)

kk090200 Con going Anime lover!!!!
I have to agree that she is a great figure and to answer a question asked in the comments... No.. the chain is not too long.. it is however a royal pain to get it to hang on both sides equally level! LOL
I really love this figure. If you are an avid collector of simply beautiful figures than this one should be in your collection even if you are not familiar with the series.

Loved your review :3 I just yesterday had the chance of ordering her and I had to do it. After that I read this and then I knew I didn´t do anything wrong with buying her ^^

Only thing which bugs me is that her chain with the spheres...it looks like it were too long and would drag on the ground is that the case?

All in all wonderful Figure ^^

YakuriGreat review; just got her a few days ago and good heavens, she is worth every penny I spent on her.

One thing I disagree with is the box, bah is not a disagreement more like a preference. I'm thankful that her box is small (when compared to smaller figures with much larger boxes) since I hate getting rid of the boxes. Hers I'm gonna keep!

I didn't disliked the size of the box. I keep every box too. Hehehe. It was just surprising to see it so small. And yes, she's worth every penny that you can spend on her. And thanks for the compliment.

FgrClctnI was really looking forward to this figure when it was announced and immediately pre-ordered it. A long wait and a few delays, but it finally arrived. All is pretty much as you've said in this review...except my example must have missed their Quality inspection because two of the black stocking seams have been painted miss-aligned for a section of their run. One section measures about 4cm and the other is about 3cm. One line crosses the seam and wanders on the other side which effectively draws the eye to it as a defect. The paint wanders as much as 1mm from the raised seam it should be applied to. I don't know if the vertical seams are hand painted or machine applied, but it is a detraction. Overall, I still admire the figure; and when it is posed for display, the faults aren't seen. If it bothers me too much, I may experiment on some other items to see if I can do a better job with my air brush and "0000" artist brush. But I'll probably just live with it. Other than that, Velvet is an outstanding figure and a good example of how far along figures have come! ( I have some older G-Taste figures as a comparison.)

I'm really sorry to hear that you were unlucky with quality control. :( I would be very frustrated... I hope that if you ever try to fix it, you can do it. I would probably let it be...
But yes, figures have gone a really long way, thanks god. ^_^

mangasus90My, shes a goddess @__@...

Yes, she's really beautiful. ^_^

ChagNice job man! Your writing and photos are clear and informative, and you can't ask for much more than that in a review. Don't sell yourself short, and thanks for sharing this!

The more I see of this figure, the better I like it. I've had a lousy experience with Yamato's Ayanami Rei before, but maybe it's time to reassess Yamato's quality control.

Thank you very much. ^_^

I saw the problem, by photos, of this Rei. It's really a shame that the failed on such a beautiful figure. That was one of the things that made me fear problems.

Lady-MegatronHer face and the base look both really great.

And you did a really good job with this review. I'm no pro myself and I really enjoyed reading it.

Thank you very much. ^_^ Glad you liked reading it.

Her face is really gorgeous. Everyday I have to stop and see it.
