Binzume Yousei (Bottle Fairy) - Kusachiho - Hororo's Eye Color

MaakieMaakie20 days agoReview
THIS REVIEW IS A BIG SPOILER FOR THE PLOT OF THE Binzume Yousei (Bottle Fairy) ANIME, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

There will be one sort-of-NSFW pantyshot in this review that has been put in spoiler, so this is a sfw review!

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Kusachiho ENTRY #9949 from Binzume Yousei (Bottle Fairy) ENTRY #9950 ! This figure ITEM #1779 is made by Yamato ENTRY #7634 . Interesting to note is that this figure has 4 versions, one for each eye color of the fairies. The one I'm reviewing today is the Hororo version, which has green eyes. The others are Kururu ITEM #5105 (blue eyes), Sarara ITEM #5106 (red eyes) and Chiriri ITEM #5107 (yellow eyes). Before I start with this review, I want to point out that the figure is over 13 years old as of writing this. I was the first owner of this figure and unsealed her more than 10 years ago. Then I had her on display for about 6 years and stored for about 4. The pictures from this review were taken directly after opening up the figure after getting her from the storage.

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

SPOILER WARNING Binzume Yousei (Bottle Fairy) is a cute and bubbly anime that is about four fairies learning about the human world. They have the goal of becoming a human, in which they succeed at the end of the series. This character is actually the human form the fairies have made. The 'problem' with this human form is that there are still four very different personalities inside! Kusachiho's eye color changes depending on the fairy that has control of the body. Hororo, the one that has control over Kusachiho's body in this figure, is the fairy that represents winter. She has a slow and shy personality, which clashes a bit with the happy-go-lucky look of this figure that seems to be based on Kururu.

The reason why and how I got her

When I bought this figure, more than 10 years ago, I picked her up from a convention. Figures were a lot more niche back then, even at conventions and especially at conventions in my small country. Finding a figure that wasn't a horrid looking bootleg was even harder. During this time, I have picked up many random anime figures from not very well known or simply unpopular franchises, just because the market (to me, I did not shop much online yet back then), was so small. This figure was one of the earlier described pick-ups.

Original art

I could not find any artwork or screenshot she was specifically posed after.

Her design comes directly from the anime series, where the outfit we see on her is used. Compared to her anime-look her face is a bit less round on this figure and her hair looks quite a bit thicker and more orange.

Only one big window at the front and with a lot of older figures, the base was placed behind her in the packaging. The sides show cute artwork of the fairies with a bit of a blurry filter over them. The back has a huge picture of the figure with Kururu's eye color. Considering Kururu is the most energetic and outgoing from the fairies, it's quite clear that Kururu was the personality the posing of this figure was made after. The other 3 versions of this figure (including the Hororo one I'm reviewing right now) are the variations.

The inside of the box is a big piece of cardboard you can take out. Kusachiho is being pressed down a bit by an extra piece of clear plastic, but does not have any other protection to keep her down (not even the wires we see a lot with older figures). The figure itself is only two pieces: Body and base.

The base is glued underneath a piece of plastic to the cardboard backing. You can not get the base out without either damaging the paint on the cardboard a little bit or cutting the plastic away. I chose for the first option back then, because I thought cutting in the plastic that holds the base there, would maybe let the base easily fall out when it's being put back in the box. I'm pretty sure with my cutting skills nowadays I could have done better than this.

What a cutie! Her hair design certainly makes her very interesting and from a distance you can already see a lot of shading on her.

Looking at all the details!

Her big and energetic smile is adorable! Her design gives off a bit of an 'older character design'-vibe, but it's still very proportional.

Kusachiho's hair, and especially her bangs look very fluffy! The swirly strand of hair around her head is a bit differently shaded and has a slightly noticeable seamline. The paint on the hair itself is very nice, with only a small painting error spot with my copy on the middle of her front bangs.

From the side you can see a pretty big seamline where the front half and back half of her hair meet. You can also see a seamline on the side of her long hair.

From the back, the hair looks a lot better! There is quite a lot of shading in the hair for a figure of this age. The shade differentiates from brighter orange, to softer orange and ending in a dark orange.

The bottom of the wefts at the back look a bit messy up close with a few of the same paint spots as you could see on the front bangs.

In her right hand she holds a drawstring (bento?) bag with a dog (?) paw print. To be honest, I completely forgot the significance from this item in the series and I could also not find out about it online. So if someone could enlighten me for what this bag was used for again, I would appreciate it!

The dog paws are nicely put on decals and the sculpt of the bag shows some of the fabric getting scrunched together at the top, a nice touch! There are a few specs of dust, I think I forgot to brush that part when I was cleaning the figure, sorry for that!

With both her right-and left arms and hands, quite a lot of effort went into the shading inbetween the fingers and the shading of the creases in her shirt. For the shirt I think the shading looks very nice, but on the hands the bright pink shade looks a bit too much.

The left arm has a bit of a crude attachment to the body, where a big seamline is to be seen. Interesting is that her right arm does not have a seamline at all and was part of the rest of the body sculpt.

Her dress design is very cute, with two big safety pins holding the top together. The dress itself also shows nice shading again, with especially in the middle some lighter colors. The basic black paint was applied quite neatly near her chest and the bobby pins, but has a few letdowns near the straps.

I shouldn't forget to also point out some of the 'scratches' you can see especially at the front of the dress. With older figure paints (especially in darker colors), it happened quite a lot that a figure would get 'scratches' like this. A lot of times it was already when you opened the figure that some of the scratches were there. There is also a high chance I made (some of) these small scratches myself while cleaning and/or moving the figure. It's a bit of a letdown, but a lot of older figures I own have paint like this. Watch out with your fingernails while handling them!

Kusachiho wears very cute colored and warm-looking leggings (I own a pair just like these!). There is a bit of wrinkle sculpted at her knees, which is a nice touch. The shading is also very detailed here, with darker spots at the top, bottom and middle.

Her shoes are small black boots with a green sole. The paint of the sole is quite okay, but at the top they seem to have forgotten to paint a few parts. This figure does suffer a bit from 'small anime feet', like seen in multiple of my reviews, most notorious in my recent Kagami blog/33772 and Konata blog/33187 reviews.

This figure doesn't have an actual pantyshot as Kusachiho's legging covers her panties. You can see the shape of her panties a bit on the backside and on the front you can see a sewn line from the legging. There is a lot more detail underneath her skirt than I expected!

The base is just a big piece of 'yegh'. When I noticed while editing the pictures that this picture came out blurry, I didn't even feel like going through the effort of re-taking this shot.

Anyway, the base is square, big and made of the type of material older computer cases were made of. You know, the ones that discolor to yellow like crazy without even being put in the sun. It's especially disappointing if you compare it to the base shown with the prototype: PICTURE #55100 Maybe they tried to cut down on costs during the production process? In the end the release price of this figure was very low, only 1800 yen, so that could explain it.

The bottom of the base shows some simple copyright markings.

The Points

Positive
- Lots of very nice shading.
- Nice sculpt.

Neutral
- It is clear that the design of this figure was meant for Kururu's personality, but they have copy-pasted the box and figure design for the other versions. This makes the recolors feel a bit less interesting to me.
- Paint that easily scratches, something that happened a lot more during the era in which this figure was made.

Negative
- Base can only been taken out of the packaging by damaging the box.
- Ugly base.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
There are some visible seamlines, but the sculpting of this very low-budget figure is really nice!

Painting 8/10
There are some mistakes, but the high amount of shading really makes up for that!

Posing 7/10
Very cute and energetic, but a bit out of character for all the different eye color versions than blue.

Base 5/10
I just don't want to rate it any lower, because then I would temper too much with the final score of the figure. Base is too big, has no design at all and is made of bad material.

Packaging 7/10
Simple, small, cute and colorful! Minus points for having to damage the box to remove the base.

Enjoyment 8/10
I enjoyed this figure a lot when I had her in my collection. Her color palette is so cheerful and she fits together very well with a lot of other figures. As you probably have noticed, this is written in past tense. If it wasn't for the downsizing of my collection in general, I would have kept her!

Conclusion

This is a very cute, affordable and interesting figure for sure! Despite her age she looks quite good, even from up close. Quality wise I would compare her with lower/mid-end prize figures that are being made nowadays.

Availability

Kusachiho and all of her eye color variations pop up a lot on second hand websites, with opened ones ranging from 500 yen to 2000 yen. I also see her for sale a lot locally where she fetches around $25 on average. Interesting to point out is that I saw a lot less Hororo eye color (green ones, like the one in this review) for sale than the other three colors. I would have expected the Kururu (blue version) to be the most popular and maybe even more expensive than the rest! It makes me wonder how much of each color variation they have made.

And to finish it!

Here is how I used to display her in my collection the last time I had her on display! She doesn't come in a specific scale, but is quite big as you can see!

solluxcaptor (20 days ago) #28832321She is so cute! I love her cheerful expression and pose :D
Besides a few paint defects not matching up to current paint standard I don't think it really shows that she is that old as a figure. She's just so charming!

Yeah, she is so cute and precious! <3

If I wouldn't know better, I would just think she is an prize figure. :)

Seravy (20 days ago) #28832663It's been a long time ago so just a guess, but didn't they go to the school to deliver the guy's lunch which he forgot?

Hrmm, could be! I should really get to re-watching the series!

I don't recall what the purpose of the little green bag was, however, since it's been ages since I last watched the show. Maybe this is a good excuse to go back and revisit it; after all, it's pretty short...
All in all, it's a cute figure, although that "coaster" base is kind of horrendous!

Oh, that's a coincidence! I didn't think/talk about this anime for years until I started making this review!

It looks like a bento bag, so maybe she went out for lunch? I should also re-watch the series, it's quite short and pretty cute.

It's for sure one of the ugliest bases I ever had in my collection. I'm not sure what the manufacturer was thinking, considering the prototype had a well-designed base showing.
