To Heart 2 Another Days - Yamada Michiru - 1/8 - Kotobukiya

MaakieMaakie13 days agoReview
! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

The pantyshot in this review has been put in spoiler, so this is a sfw review! There is one picture that has her chest a bit zoomed-in, if you consider that nsfw.

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Yamada Michiru ENTRY #2153 from To Heart 2 Another Days ENTRY #399 ! This figure ITEM #1595 is made by Kotobukiya ENCYCLOPEDIA #7621 .

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

To Heart 2 - Another Days is the follow-up from the well known To Heart 2 visual novel/dating sim game. Simply put, it's up to you to develop a romance with one of the available girls. Yamada Michiru is an character exclusive to Another Days. She is a very shy and quiet girl and goes to a private school, which explains why she doesn't wear the very well known regular To Heart school uniform.

The reason why and how I got her

I picked up a sealed copy of this figure shortly after release at an anime convention for 40 euros (a normal price for a scaled figure back then). I had her on display for about 5 years and after that stored for around 4. This review was made during my first time unboxing her after getting her from storage. Back then I was attracted to the cute face this figure had and thought it was a good price.

Original art

As far as I know, there is no specific artwork this figure was modelled after, but please enjoy below image of this cutie!

I think her messy hairstyle and big glasses are incredibly cute! Michiru's figure seems to be made a bit thicker than her game-counterpart.

My box definitely got some damage from the age, but still looks pretty okay overall. I like how the backside shows some artwork and information about the character. The box seems a bit big for the figure it houses, though.

The figure is loose from the base in the box. The most noticeable extra part are the glasses, which are a flat metal insert that you have to cut out and shape yourself.

The instructions about these glasses are very minimal. No instructions on how to cut or shape, it only shows how the glasses should be inserted on the figure. Which is very important: you need to stick them underneath her hair.

Out of the box you will notice the base Michiru sits on can be removed from the base's base. The figure itself comes in one piece and can't be cast-off like some other To Heart figures.

Also notice that the base has a few scratches here and there, more on that later!

Because I already assembled mine when I unsealed her, I do not have pictures from the glasses-making process, but I do remember very well. It was not that great of an experience. Kotobukiya provides you with 2 pairs of glasses, in case you screw up or loose one of them. You'll need nippers to cut the glasses loose and I recommend some small crafts pliers to bend the glasses. The sides of the glasses are incredibly thin, so you have to be super careful while bending them. Luckily I didn't need my second pair (yet).

Michiru looks so cute and innocent! She is quite a lovable figure despite her age.

Looking at all the details!

Michiru has very big eyes in the well-known To Heart-style. Her small mouth and nose really add to the bewildered/shy expression.

As you can see with the glasses, my pair doesn't completely fit well on her face. There are small grooves in her hair where you can put her glasses in. On the right side they fit correctly, but (possibly as a manufacturing error, could be just my copy) on the left side they are placed too high. Which results in either using the grooves and having the glasses skewed on her face, or not use one of the grooves and have this look instead. I do think that, once you go through the hassle of making the glasses, the result is quite nice. A lot of older figures with glasses have very thick PVC frames and this looks a lot better. From a distance the 'floating glasses' are less visible. I tried to remove the glasses for a few pictures, but they were stuck and I was afraid of using too much force and possibly bending them. I'm not going to make myself use the second pair!

Michiru's bangs are sculpted quite nicely and already show a huge amount of color shading.

The rest of her hair is very pointy and has a lot of shading too! There are some small seamlines and a few painting errors to be seen.

When you want to look more closely to her uniform, you can't get around her chest. The way her breasts get squeezed together looks quite naughty when looking at the figure from this angle, but a lot more natural and less lewd when viewed from other angles.

Her uniform has a very basic design, but is executed well. the ribbon looks very crisp and the wrinkles everywhere are sculpted quite realistically.

On the side of her shirt, sleeve and skirt, you can see one big seamline. It's not very noticeable unless you look very up close. This is quite common for figures this age.

The back of her sweater shows some nice shading and it's a good detail that you can see a bit of her shoulderblade. I do have to say that from the back, her bodyshape looks a little bit strange. It looks a bit too much like a rectangle with her shoulder being too narrow for the rest of her body, but it could be the sweater giving this illussion.

Her sleeves are sculpted quite nicely , with her hands in an interesting pose at the bottom. She does not have any fingernails sculpted/painted and her skin color is, especially on her hands, a bit shiny.

The pleating on her skirt is very realistically done with the pose she is in. There is also a high amount of shading on her skirt.

Also notice how her behind and thighs are a lot more thick than in her 2D character design not that I'm complaining about that at all.

Michiru wears dark-blue high socks with a nice gradient to them. It is a little bit visible that her legs from the socks and down were made as a seperate piece and attached later.

Her shoes have a sculpt with quite some details and the paint on the buckle is done nicely.

You may also notice some scratches on the brick wall of her base on both of the pictures. The weird thing is that the places where the scratches are, don't line up with the places where the figure could possibly rub against the base. I doubt these scratches were made by the figure and I can't imagine I did this to the figure with the minimal amount I have touched it. So I started looking up older pictures I have made from the figure, and...

Look at the bottom! The scratches were already there! Maybe the blisters of the packaging rubbed against the paint of the bricks? Or it's a manufacturing error?

Also, it's a good thing I found this picture again, because here you have a look of Michiru without her glasses! Also without glasses she is very cute, but I think the glasses add more detail to her face.

To get a good look at her panties, we'll have to flip the figure. Michiru really has a nice pair of thighs and a good behind! The panties themselves are a bit plain, with as details some sewing lines.

Interesting to point out is how shiny the bottom of her hands are. I think it's because of a loss of paint with the hands touching the base the whole time. Or they did not paint the bottom of the hands at all and left it plain PVC.

The base itself is very interesting! It's a small, round brick wall. The big clear disk that comes with it is optional, but I think it's better to use it with this figure, because Michiru's feet slightly touch it. You wouldn't want paint scuff marks on your desk or in your display cabinet!

The clear disc base has this small copyright marking underneath the spot where the brick wall is inserted. As far as I know there are no bootlegs of this figure, but it's always good to keep an eye out!

This figure can also easily be displayed without any base at all. Her behind is quite 'flat' at the bottom, to make sure she is stable wherever she is placed on. This also makes her easily sit down on a bottle of water, a bookshelf, your desk, endless possibilities!

The Points

Positive
- Very cute and in-character posing.
- Quite a lot of detail for a figure this age.
- Shading in the paint is very nice.
- Figure can also be displayed without base or with partial base.

Neutral
- The box seems a bit big.
- Quite some seamlines, but only noticeable from really up close and expected of a figure this age.

Negative
- Assembly with the glasses.
- Mystery scratches on her base.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
Very nice details, especially with the wrinkles in her clothes and pleats on her shirt. A bit simple here and there, but to be expected from a figure this age.

Painting 8/10
The shading on this figure is very nice and a lot more intricate than you would expect.

Posing 8/10
Very cute and in-character! Gives multiple display options.

Base 8/10
Very original and interesting base, that offers you multiple display options. Some minus points for the mystery paint scratches, though.

Packaging 7/10
The box seems a bit big, but the design is nice. I like the artwork and information about the character on the backside.

Enjoyment 7/10
Even though I liked the figure a lot, she did not fit my collection well and I had her displayed together with some other figures that did not fit anywhere else. I could appreciate the figure by itself a lot, but she was not very fitting in my collection. So when I unboxed her after getting my figures out of storage, it was an easy choice for me to decide to sell her. Still, I have greatly enjoyed this figure for many years and absolutely don't regret buying her!

Conclusion

This is a very good figure for her age and I definitely recommend her to people that are fan of To Heart, or people that simply like shy and cute girls with a nice chest in their collection.

Availability

She is not very common to find secondhand, but also not extremely rare. I mostly see her for sale for around 3-4K yen, but right now one user has a very good deal on her if you want to pick her up even cheaper CLASSIFIED #92304 !

And to finish it!

Currently I have my figures in storage, but here is how I used to display her in my collection!

Rajke (8 days ago) #29336726You're not referring to the infamous Sonico noodle stopper photo? ;)

Oh no, you mean the one where she is melting! So sad! D: But uh yeah, I would see this figure doing something like that pretty fast, considering the quality of older PVC. xD

Maakie (8 days ago) #29322272Glad you liked it. :) And hrmm, I was more thinking of a desk-sitter figure, maybe she is also one of the first of those! :) I wouldn't put this one on noodles, I think she'll melt. xD

Rajke (12 days ago) #29194957Thanks for the review. It is really nice to see some older figures in the spotlight. I completely agree with the glasses. She looks much better with the glasses. Her pose and your picture of her on the water bottle does me think that this figure could have been one of the first noodle stopper figures.

jesmagicchild (13 days ago) #29108676Thank you for the review on this figure.
I always see on AmiAmi's preowned section, but tend to leave it due to the figures age.
Next time I see her and have some spare cash I just might add her to the cart.

No problem! I'm glad it helped you make a decision! :) A lot of older figures still need a good home and Kotobukiya's quality was already pretty solid back then! ^^ Do keep in mind the high shipping costs this figure will probably have, because of the big box!

victorviper (13 days ago) #29099012That was definitely my impression. In
PICTURE #509872 for example the two of them look absolutely tiny compared to that kneeling 1/8 Shana figure. My eyes tell me they're closer to 1/12 scale than 1/10...

Jep, here they are next to an actual 1/10 I used to own: PICTURE #670191 Would also put them as 1/12 myself, was quite disappointed in their size myself when I first got them. :(

Their quality also leaves a lot to be desired, but more on that later! ;)

Spoiler alert: Mai and Natsuki are tiny. Only a bit bigger than the Mai HiME/Otome trading figures I own. I won't spoiler too much about those figures anymore, as I'm working on the review right now! :)

victorviper (13 days ago) #29098394What a cute figure. You pointed out some things I'd never noticed about this one before; I'd never seen the cute illustration on the side of the box with her data written on the chalkboard, nor did I realize her glasses were made of metal.
I've gained a new appreciation lately for older Koto figures, as they were pretty willing to "go deep" into a franchise and make figures of fairly obscure characters. It sort of contrasts with today where instead of getting figures of 10 different characters from a series, you get 10 different figures of the same character. Maybe that's just the evolution of the hobby...
I'll be interested to see your review of Mai and Natsuki. Back in the day, I thought about getting that pair a number of times but I wasn't sure about their small scale.

The metal glasses are really nice, if you ignore the process of having to attach them yourself. :^)

I'm still feeling the same about Koto even now (although to a lesser extent than ~10 years ago). I especially like the variety of Yu-Gi-Oh! figures we already have and even though there have been no new announcements in that line recently, I'm pretty sure they will make some more. I'm looking forward to working on my review of ITEM #450031 ! ^^
