IlIegitimate Fan?IlIegitimate Fan?

I'm definitely into this novel called Girly Air Force. Primarily because of the Girls x Modern Jets theme. I'm definitely into modern jets. I play DCS World for my jet fix.

I have a rough idea of the story and some of the characters. So far I can only get it by Google Translating some of the novel reviews.

I have three of the Girly Air Force kits, (missed out on the 4th kit.. and can't find it anywhere anymore..) and if there'd be related merchandises, I'd definitely buy it..

The thing is I haven't read the novels. I'd certainly want to but I can't read japanese. Currently there are no translations nor fan-translations.. Funny thing is that, there are newer novels than Girly Air Force that are already getting at least fan-translations.

Perhaps the Girly Air Force novel is unpopular. Perhaps it's badly written? Maybe because it's about some cheap missile based combat that is unhonourable.? Unlike all these World War II based franchises we have now.

I was thinking... does liking something whilst have no complete grasp makes one look like a Fake Fan?

Honestly as long as you're having fun and you are enjoying the hobby I don't see a problem with it. Fandoms in general are often taken way too seriously, there will always be someone who will know more about a certain thing you like than you do or is a fan of said thing in a different way which they might consider the only right way. No matter how much time and effort you put into trying to become a "real fan" there will always be someone telling you you should do it differently.

...I'm kinda rambling on and on. The point of this is: Do you, fuck what others say.

Maybe use the word collector instead then? Like: i love collecting this franchise.
And just say you love the concept ^^

To me a fan does know its source and all, but i wouldnt call someone less a fan or a faker unless they strut around pretending they know everything about it..
Plus its just an opinion of me, someone else could think otherwise. Dont let it get to you ;)

yaiba (5 months ago) #32347338I never heard of the LN series before, but I like the jets. Too bad they're 1/144 scale.
I wonder if Girly Air Force was inspired by/the source of inspiration for the 3rd Aerial Girls Squad[ron] from the Shirobako anime. Both GAF and Shirobako are published by ASCII Media Works, and both were released in the same year.
The anime within an anime (3rd Aerial Girls Squad) was popular enough to get it's own OVA, so maybe GAF has a chance at becoming an anime as well.

I think it might be just coincidence.. Girly Air Force is a bit different.
The girls represent the jets themselves. That why their names are the particular jet's nicknames by flight crews.

Gripen, Eagle, Phantom, Viper Zero,Berkut, Rhino, Rafale, Zhuravlik, Lastoschka.. etc.. (Pretty much the girls revealed in the 8 volumes of GAF so far...

Their enemies are something called "Zai" in which some readers visualize something like Neuroi of World Witches.

I think the Girly Airforce's inspiration would be Arpeggio of the Blue Steel.

As long as you don't pretend to know everything about the source, and just like it for what it is, I'd say you're a real fan. The only way you could collect something and not be a "real" fan is if you were a poser, and pretended to like/know about a show or series just to look cool or popular.

I've got a bunch of stuff in my collection 'cos I like it. I have a bunch of figures based on a particular mobile game, as I really like the figures, but I doubt I'll ever play the game, lol.

Some stuff, I'm not so keen on the source material, but fuck it, I like the character design, so I buy the figures :P.

Those jets look pretty cool imo - wouldn't mind them in my collection, lol.

Honestly I think the concept of a "true fan" is a bit silly. Sometimes you really like something, sometimes you only sort of like something, and other times you don't. If you're happy to collect something without being interested in the source, that's fine in my book, and should really be fine with other people. However, some people like to feel "superior" or get annoyed when it makes hard-to-get merch even harder to get, because not a lot was made and you don't "deserve" it as a "non-true" fan. For people having issues getting merch, you either need to accept it's not going to happen, or put a bunch of effort into hunting it down, and being prepared to pay a premium.

That said, there are plenty of novels that aren't ever going to get translated. Not even fan-translations. Not because they don't have fans, but because there just so much stuff! Novels, manga, anime, games... all of it potentially translated, by fans even, but only a handful of what's available can possibly ever actually get a translation. There just aren't that many people who 1) can translate, 2) are willing to translate, and 3) like a certain thing enough to pick that to translate. It sucks when what you like isn't translated, but that's just the luck of the draw.

I was wishing it would at least get an anime adaption..
..but indeed, it makes sense.. More reasons for me to forget anime all together.

Get what you like. I have a few things in my collection I'm not super well versed on that I have simply because I like it. ITEM #77886 and ITEM #77885 were my earliest figure wants and a couple grails I now own. I only ever watched bits and pieces of the game, read a few chapters of the manga and never saw the anime. Do I love them any less? Hell no. I love them and they will stay with me forever. ITEM #118010 too, I never finished the series but I will keep her forever because I love her.

People who take fandoms seriously make collecting less fun.
