victorviper (28 days ago) #37593305Hmm, I didn't even realize that Koto had made prepainted figures of any of the Frame Arms Girls; I thought that all they'd done were those articulated kits.
That is a neat base/backdrop on item/604560! It almost looks like there's an LED in the base.

That specific one is the first non-articulated of the girls, unless you also count ITEM #549733 . ;)

The base doesn't have any lights, but it's easily done to shine some light on it yourself. Even without light, the base looks quite impressive in user pictures: PICTURE #1940208 & PICTURE #1940204

Maakie (28 days ago) #37592708Back in the old days when at conventions there were not even that much figures for sale yet, people were always in awe (including me) of the quality of the Shunya ones. :) But as it got easier to acquire figures (also through the internet) my collection interests shifted. I do think it would be nice for you to complete the trio! For now I will just buy a good Shunya Horror Bishoujo every now and then. I am super stoked for the one from Ash ITEM #600025 as I am currently catching up with episodes of Ash vs. Evil Dead. :)
With Koto I really like the flat, but detailed grounds/pavement/roads they have been doing for the YGO figures, but one of my recent favorite Koto bases is probably ITEM #604560 and the upcoming Ash! :)

victorviper (1 month ago) #37438939There's so many Yamashita figures that I've never felt any compulsion to get them all, but I would kind of like to complete the Shii-Arisa-Sera trio.
Kotobukiya can be so weird with their bases. Sometimes they'll just do the plainest, most boring design on that front, but then sometimes they'll do something fantastically elaborate, like on ITEM #141607 or ITEM #333165 !

Maakie (1 month ago) #37438544There was a point very long ago when I wanted all the Shunya figures. :) Anyway, thanks for this review! I am especially surprised at her base, never paid attention to the interesting design of it until now! And seeing her toes through the stocking is a very neat detail especially for such an old figure!

sailormatlac (1 month ago) #36405914I remember when the GK came out. Many assembled and painted great version of her. As for older figures, it is interesting to note that PVC anime figure collecting is now more that a decade old, meaning many older figures are now completely forgotten. This creates a set of condition where one can now go back and try to find the gems: figures that had genuine artistic value and decent manufacturing standard. As you said yourself, it is interesting to see how some items - like this Yamashita one - have retained their relevance a decade later, making them "true" classic PVC figures.

It wasn't until I wrote this review that I really took a good look at GK Shii, and I was surprised that she differed from the Koto figure so significantly!

Shii might be one of those figures that might actually be cooler today than when she was first released. Back then, her flip phone would have been an everyday, but today it's cooler because of the retro factor!

Of the Arisa-Shii-Sera trio of Yamashita figures that were released around the same time, Shii has definitely held up the best IMO.

I like writing review of older figures, as sometimes they allow people to discover an old hidden gem :).

I was surprised that Shii is actually as old as what you say.
There can be reasonable quality gap between what we get now and what was available then.
I've just bought a 2005ish 1/5 figure for Kirika from Noir.
By today's standards its not a great figure, but as I am a great fan of her and anime it's worth getting.
Then again, I have a similar vintage 1/5 Alter Ayanami which I think is a wonderful replica.

Rajke (2 months ago) #35633606Nice review. For the age of this figure she looks good. I agree with her hair. That is too plain, some better shading would improve it a lot.

She definitely does look quite good for an older figure, but for the life of me I can't figure out why Koto didn't pay more attention to the sculpt of her hair. It's particularly apparent when comparing this figure to the garage kit of Shii released right around the same time. The back of her hair PICTURE #941178 and the braids PICTURE #9411773 are so much more detailed on the GK!

Appreciate your candour and reviewing style.
