It's been a while since I did a review of a Japanse DIY kit, so I hope you enjoy! This time it's the Ramen-Making-Kit from Popin' Cookin'. It's a sweets-type of kit and not meant to give an realistic taste.

The packaging from this set shows a picture of how it would look if you had perfect skills in making these. I like how the packaging is styled after an instant ramen pack.

The backside show Japanese instructions. As with most other sets, the manufacturer has English instructions online, which you can read along with this walktrough if you like: www.nerune.jp/p...

The kit comes with the following parts:

Making the kit

With this kit, there were no parts to cut to make an display for the food, so I went straight to making the candy.

Two small pieces of the white candy need to be pressed into the mold for the egg and the naruto.

The rest of the white candy needs to be spread to the size of this example.

The flattened candy, that has now become pastry, has to be pushed in the specific mold to make the correct shape for the dumplings they will become.

The filling doesn't need mixing and can be poured directly into the pastry.

After that you have to press them into dumpling shapes by hand and, well...that was harder than expected. *edit* User ZEPHIYRA pointed out to me that you were supposed to cut the edges off the mold and then fold it, so to create more clean-looking dumplings than I did. Looking back at the instructions, it does show this, but not so clearly that I understood on my first try on this set.

Mixing the soup was quite easily done as it was just throwing the powder into the correct amount of water. The mixing tray also directly becomes the soup bowl.

Next up was making the noodle mix, which became a bit jello-like in structure.

A small gap needs to be made in the corner of the piping bag with the tooth pick. After that you can pour the jello in. You then squirt the jello out of the piping bag on top of the soup. As the jello was quite droopy, I could not make pictures while I was following these steps.

Your result will be this: Noodles looking like snakes slightly floating inside the soup.

The recipe calls for saving a bit of the noodle mix to make the egg yolk and the naruto swirl. Considering how tiny these pieces are, I could not make anything that resembled something close to a swirl. The egg yolk looks OK I guess.

End result

The end result is quite cute! The soup actually looks like soup and the naruto and egg were floating for a short time. (I could not make enough noodles to have them laying on top.)

The taste

The noodles were surprisingly tasty, given how weird they look. Both the noodles and soup tasted like cola candy (similar to the Haribo gummies taste).

The dumplings, who were advertised as 'juicy' by the packaging, were actually rather dry. It actually feels like a small drop of water maybe had to be added to the mix, although the instructions don't call for it. The dumpling was ramune soda flavor.

Considering I preferred the cola taste and I found the dumpling too dry, dipping it in the 'soup' actually made it taste a lot better! Quite barbaric, I know.

Recommendable?

This set has a lot less variation in flavor compared to others from this series, but personally, as I like ramune and cola flavors and am less fan of 'experimental' flavors found in others, I found the taste of this set quite enjoyable.

It's also quite fun to make this set, although it's a more simple one than your average Popin' Cookin' considering the low amount of variation. I do think this is a good start for a beginner in DIY candy kits as the instructions are simple and the flavors are tastes most people like.

Sasunarufan13 (9 months ago) #36171588I never was fond of that particular powder *grimaces*
I might try out this particular set if I find it, though, because these flavours are ones I actually like XD

Sorry, but it has that texture. :X Maybe you can try to add a teeny tiny bit of water to the powder when you make yours? Maybe it then becomes 'juicy!', lol!

Zephiyra (9 months ago) #36173674I recently found these at a local asian store, too! It's a really nice kit. I really liked how the noodles actually became... Noodle-y? Sweet, cola-flavoured noodles.
By the by, you weren't supposed to mold the dumpling by hand. You need to cut the dumpling mold out of the plastic, that way you can easily fold the mold in half and press the dumpling shut. Doesn't work perfectly, but looks better than by hand :) Nice review nontheless!

I actually did not expect my own noodles to turn out so well and I loved the cola taste of them! :)

And OH! I did not realize that! Now I know in case I want to make a second one. :') I will add that info to the review!

Maakie (9 months ago) #36171298Yeah, I also wasn't super happy with the contents being so dry. It reminded me of the powder that comes with those dipping sticks candy:

But indeed, it was a quite rare occassion where the flavors of the candy were nice. xD

Sasunarufan13 (9 months ago) #36168105The content of the dumplings looked a bit odd to me, but at least the flavours of this set doesn't sound too outrageous XD

victorviper (9 months ago) #36164112Unlike some of these Popin' Cookin' sets that you've reviewed, it seems like the actual taste of the candy *doesn't* class with the appearance of the food this time!
It's funny you mentioned Haribo cola gummies. I love those things!

Indeed! While you could say that the tastes are too similar in this set, these all tasting like different kinds of soda is fine with me! :)

And yes, I love Haribo cola gummies myself too, their taste is super great! Also their gummy bears!

eviljackspicer (9 months ago) #36135969That looks really tasty!atunafish (9 months ago) #36148973I'm craving for sweets just looking at this.... Need to get my hands on one of these to try out!

It was probably one of the more tasty DIY kits I had, but that could also be because I really like soft drink flavors! ;) Have fun trying them yourself if you end up buying them!
