July Loot-Filling in some Gaps.July Loot-Filling in some Gaps.

victorvipervictorviper2 months agoLoot
I had only one item preordered in July, and so months like this provide a good opportunity to track down older items from my wishlist. This month, we've got that one preorder figure, a figure I got for a super-low price on Amazon, a few select pre-owned finds including a C-grade AmiAmi figure, and some assorted anime media. Sounds interesting, right?

There's nothing 18+ in this article, but a couple of shots below are mildly NSFW, so be advised of that.

Collecting together some items from AmiAmi, Amazon, and a couple of smaller US shops, we've got the following pile of loot.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533328010.jpeg

AmiAmi's July postcard features Amico and Lilco having some summer fun.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533328013.jpeg

Before we get to the figures, let's do a quick rundown of the non-figure goods. The manga is the first volume of Murcielago ENTRY #104411; I've seen this series compared to Gunsmith Cats ENTRY #709, and since that is one of my favorite manga titles, I decided to give Murcielago a shot.

The DVD/Blu-Ray sets are Is the Order a Rabbit? and New Game!. Once upon a time, watching anime prompted me to buy figures, but now that dynamic has sort of reversed and today it's not uncommon for me to seek out an anime series after seeing its figures, and both of these shows have certainly gotten their share of figures.

The other media item is Hunie Pop, which is a fusion of a Bejeweled-style game and a hentai visual novel. Technically, this is not a Japanese game, but all the character designs are definitely anime styled and the narrative is very much like you would see in a visual novel. It's been well reviewed, and it wasn't expensive, so I decided to give it a shot. The only complaint is that it's very, very short (it's possible to play through all the girls' routes in 10-15 hours)! A sequel is rumored to be in the works, too, so I figured I'd vote with my wallet to try to make that happen...

The first figure on this month's slate is Plum's Mimi Balguerie ITEM #433418 from the Ro-Kyu-Bu! anime. Every now and then, Amazon will have super deals on anime figures, particularly ones that have been released for a while, and so from time to time, I'll just do a generic Amazon search by manufacturer in hopes that I can find an item on my wishlist at a deep discount. Sure enough, earlier this month they had Mimi for only $40 with free Prime shipping to boot. That's by far the lowest price I've seen for this figure, and since Amazon prices can change at the drop of a hat, I was hitting the "add to cart button" before the price changed :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533336841.jpeg

I like how Plum has included a full panel of character art on the boxes of many of their Ro-Kyu-Bu! figures.

If you've read many of my reviews and loot posts, you might know that Plum's Ro-Kyu-Bu bunny figures have been one of my favorite figure lines of the last couple of years, and Mimi had been languishing on my wish list. In the anime, Mimi is in a different class than the rest of the main characters, and perhaps to emphasize this fact, Plum mixes up the look of Mimi's outfit, pairing her bunny ears with a dealer outfit instead of the more "traditional" bunny suit.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533167219.jpeg

Here is Mimi with Saki Nagatsuka ITEM #320011, one of my favorite figures. You can see that the dealer-style outfit definitely mixes up Mimi's look, and I think the blue outfit goes well with her pretty blue eyes and her greyish hair.

I recently reviewed ITEM #604642 (review: BLOG #40436), and I had a conversation with another MFC user regarding how that figure would go really well with Orchid Seed's Yuka Yoshii ITEM #61722, so I made a mental note to keep an eye out for Yuka. Not an hour later, I was scanning AmiAmi's preowned section and they had a C-grade Yuka at a really good price. I guess that was fate...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533346129.jpeg

I like the text on the box :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533346131.jpeg

AmiAmi gave the reason for the C grade as "paint transfer on chest area", and you can see that some red paint from Yuka's scarf had in fact transferred to her chest. I've had good luck with C-grade items from AmiAmi and I was confident that the paint transfer would clean up easily enough with a Magic Eraser...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533328239.jpeg

...and sure enough, it did!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533328242.jpeg

I'm not sure, however, what's going on with that purple spot underneath Yuka's bikini top. That spot resisted the Magic Eraser treatment, and I can't figure out what might have caused that discoloration. Any ideas?

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533328245.jpeg

Since that spot is not very conspicuous, I'm not too worried about it, particularly considering I got Yuka at such a good price.

I am very partial to the "skimpy clothes+scarf in winter" theme, and Orchid Seed did a really good job with Yuka's body sculpt! I like the various fluffy pom-poms on her outfit, too :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533328247.jpeg

I was hoping that Yuka would go well with Daiki's Kurara-chan ITEM #604642, and she sure does!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533328252.jpeg

Next up is my sole preorder item for July, Banpresto's Rem ITEM #672626. I'll be honest; Rem was kind of an impulse buy, as she was very inexpensive (1300 yen) and sometimes I will preorder an inexpensive item from AmiAmi just so I can have a non-empty monthly order. Doing so allows me to hunt for preowned items at my leisure, just adding them one at a time to my monthly order, thereby saving me the cost of shipping a bunch of items individually.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533330377.jpeg

When I picked up the box containing Rem, I could feel *something* heavy moving around inside, and the reason is apparent in the shot below.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533330387.jpeg

These days, it's common to see prize figures wrapped in bubble wrap and taped to a slab of cardboard in lieu of using a blister, but Banpresto didn't do either of those things! Rem is just packed loose in the box! I wonder how many people will end up with a scuffed up figure as a result...

Fortunately, my Rem was no worse for wear, and she really turned out quite well, particularly considering her low price!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533330394.jpeg

Next up is a figure of one of my favorite characters, Art Spirits' Mikan Yuuki ITEM #144919. This figure is not rare by any means, but neither is it one of those items that you will stumble across every other day, and so when it popped up on AmiAmi, I figured that with my light July order, I should probably get it while the getting is good.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533332567.jpeg

I was perfectly aware before buying Mikan that this figure has some quirks, like that horrible seam on Mikan's top. However, I like Mikan's very casual and carefree pose; it's not just the usual boring upright pose.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533332572.jpeg

That horrible seam enables Mikan's castoff feature, although my goodness it was difficult to get the top removed! Amazingly, it might have been even more difficult to get it put back *on*. Also, it seems to me it would have made more sense to have the seam on the far side of Mikan's body and personally I would have preferred that they just omitted the castoff feature altogether (I'm tempted to try to permanently glue the top together along that seam), thereby making that seam unnecessary, but they didn't ask me for my input...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533332576.jpeg

In any event, despite this quirk, this Mikan has her own charms, and she's full of personality to be sure.

Finally, we've got a figure from one of my favorite series that I declined to preorder, figuring that she would eventually price drop on the secondhand market, Kotobukiya's Hikari Takanashi ITEM #534378.

Hikari's pose is similar, if not quite identical to, her appearance on the cover of volume one of the source manga. It would have been neat if Koto could have positioned Hikari's schoolbag as it appears on the cover (in the figure, she's just holding the bag in her hand), as that would have made the pose a lot more energetic!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533333174.jpeg

I declined to preorder Hikari last year because she is a very simple figure and I was fairly sure she would price drop. My call was correct, as a little more than a year after her release, I was able to get her preowned for about 50% less than her original price.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1533333176.jpeg

Interviews with Monster Girls has been one of my favorite manga of the last few years, and so I'm glad to finally have a figure of one of the characters, and despite the fact that Hikari is a simple figure, I like her enough that I've got her displayed right above my desk. I was hopeful that the other leads from the series (Sakie the succubus, Kyouko the dullahan, and Yuki the snow woman) would get figures too, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen...

So, that's it for July's loot, and as always...

THANKS FOR READING!

POLL TIME!!!

I feel like doing a review of an item in this month's loot, as they all have interesting features, but I can't quite decide which figure to review, so the question is...

victorviper (1 month ago) #39548209It ended up being a three-way tie between Rem, Hikari, and Mimi. One other user broke the tie by voting for Rem later, but now with you voting for Hikari, it's a tie again between Hikari and Rem :).
I guess that's why I couldn't make up my mind.

That means you'll have to review them all (eventually)! :D

Looks like I'll have some time off soon for photographing, really excited to do that again too! Think I'll go for my unopened Alter Strike Witches girls first. :)

Yeah, although I would like a review of (almost) all, Hikari I would like to see first, I was surprised to see I was the only vote lol. And what you describe also happened to me before with votes disappearing. :( Do you remember what people were voting for the most when it was still active?

victorviper (1 month ago) #39381468When Mimi was released, it was some combination of having a full month already, and being unsure if Plum was going to do a whole new line of secondary characters (and my not wanting to "commit" to another new figure line). However, Plum seems to be done with Ro-Kyu-Bu, and I found Mimi cheap, so it all worked out.
I knew that Mikan figure had some problems, and if it was a character I didn't like quite so well, then I wouldn't have bought it. But at the end of the day, it's not an uncute figure, and it's Mikan.
I guess you voted for Hikari in the poll :). I was trying to copy the basic template of this article for this month's loot post, but I guess I wasn't paying attention and I ended up *erasing* a big chunk of this article. Fortunately, I was able to control-z my way out of that mess and restore the article, but it reset my poll in the process...
For a while, I thought we might get more Interviews with Monster Girls figures, and there's another Hikari figure getting released soon, but that is likely it. It's too bad, since I would have liked to have a Kyouko figure. I can just imagine a Nendoroid Kyouko where she's holding her head in her hands :).

I think what also made me 'help' to think that, is because (at least for me), those Ro-Kyu-Bu bunnies went quite under the radar. Not much people seem to collect them or talk about the series (which is still on my watch list by the way). ;)

With nowadays so many series with short runs (instead of less series with longer runs), how much people still talk about a series 1-2 year after the anime has ended, will tell you how much (or little) chance there is for figures or other merchandise in my experience. With Interviews with Monster Girls I don't hear people talk about it anymore, while with other series with similar themes, take for example Monster Musume, still have a more steady flow of merchandise (although this specific example lacking in figure-releases).

Maakie (1 month ago) #39380426I had not realized until this blog that you did not have ITEM #433418 yet, as I assumed you were (pre-)ordering all those Ro-Kyu-Bu! SS bunnies! Anyway, she seems cute, would love to see a review from her at a later point! :)
And dang how obvious the cast-off from ITEM #144919 looks, I haven't seen anything like that in a long time. X_X
ITEM #534378 is a cutie! Although I'm also afraid we can't really expect other figures from this franchise, a lot of people seem to have forgotten about it...

I sincerely hope to see one day a review of this one. Even though I know I won't order her, she really caught my eye. Rocket Boy has quite a few interesting figures.

It's near certain that I will review Kurone soon after getting her.

The only thing that worries me is that she doesn't yet have a firm release date, even though she's scheduled for August.

sailormatlac (2 months ago) #38574933Nice little loot. A total contrast from mine which was probably the biggest in more than three years!
Well. I voted for Rem to break the poll. The other figures were cool, but it's always nice to analyze prize figures done right from time to time...
I wouldn't be surprised it has to do with warehousing capacity. Allowing both would probably start to be a real managing problem at some point.

I already sort of decided to review Rem, but thanks for breaking the tie :).

Mimi, however, is probably my favorite figure from this month's loot-she's so cute.

This month's loot wasn't particularly big, since I knew August was poised to be sort of a killer month. I've got ITEM #464770, ITEM #582603, and ITEM #464603, although my delay-o-meter is starting to ping for Marie Rose, and I wouldn't be surprised if she gets pushed back to September.

victorviper (2 months ago) #38347091I've always found it odd that you could preorder a 500 yen stationery item from AmiAmi and they'll hold on to all the other stuff you want to add to that order until the preorder item arrives in stock at the end of the month, but they won't let you buy a preowned figure on the second of the month and wait until the end of the month to ship it! I'm guessing it's a database thing...

I wouldn't be surprised it has to do with warehousing capacity. Allowing both would probably start to be a real managing problem at some point.

24% Plum's Mimi Balguerie.
18% Orchid Seed's Yuka Yoshii.
24% Banpresto's Rem.
10% Art Spirits' Mikan Yuuki.
24% Kotobukiya's Hikari Takanashi.

That's kind of funny. No wonder I was having such a hard time making up my mind.
