I bought a prize figure... (Ro-chan)I bought a prize figure... (Ro-chan)

The time when I was really into figures pretty much lines up with the time I was in junior high. ITEM #26435 came out about the time I graduated, and that was my last figure for a long time, and I sold a bunch of old ones, but since like 2014 there have been a few figures that caught my interest... most of them being from Kantai Collection. In the past few years, some prize figure photos on here really impressed me, but I never bought one - until I had the idea of finding a low-priced figure to put on the little shelf in my kitchen.

Here she is, an 800 yen tanned u-boat, a character who is one of the many wonderful gifts given to the 2d world by my number one fave, Humikane.

Her box is not very useful for re-use since it doesn't have a blister package, but that's the only advantage older prize figures had over today's prize figures. I'm not sure this box is worth keeping, but the colour is nice. The figure arrived safely anyway.

All the pieces.

The base on its own. It looks nice enough, but the poles holding up the preserver don't seem quite right... For me, it's impossible to get all three poles into both the preserver and the actual base. No clue if this is a me-problem, a this particular figure problem, or an every Taito Ro problem.

But whatever, this figure was cheap. And cute!

All the lines are super clean. I was somewhat concerned about the painted-on untanned skin, but it's not really as bad in person. The shading on her legs is really appealing and distracts me. Her neck is a little weird and shinier than it maybe should be, but her hair and popsicle cover it at most any reasonable angle. It might be nice if the popsicle looked a little more shiny or slightly clear or something, but it's probably a little much to ask of a prize figure.

The movement of her hair is really nice from here.

But the sculpt of it gets a little iffy looking here.

The leg seamlines definitely remind you that it's a prize. But the shading is distracting enough for me again.

A size comparison with Komugi, with my hand out of the frame to make things not make sense. Anyway, flaaat.

I feel like this a pretty unexciting review, especially considering this is a prize figure from more than two years ago, but really, this is a pretty enjoyable figure for me. Depending on what company you're talking about, her quality isn't that far off from some older scaled figures I used to own. She has her flaws, but the good points are enough to be better. Her belly has really nice sculpting, her shoes are cute, her legs are great even with the seams, the price is nearly nothing, and it's fun to have her sit wherever. If only her original form had a figure too...

Coincidentally unboxed mine today, now reading up on blogs. :) I have the same problems with the three poles. I can get 2 out of 3 fitting at best. When I put in a 3rd, another will pop out. It still sturdy enough with 2 poles only, so yeah...

Overall, she exceeded my expectations and I think she's super cute. :)

Oh wow, that is really unfortunate :( Mine doesn't really have any of those issues at all. Infact she is great PICTURE #1304324

I should probably buy a Powerball ticket or some such.
None of my prize figures have major issues, and they run the gamut (Taito, Furyu, Banpresto, Sega, etc.)

solluxcaptor (3 months ago) #38648026Huh, I saw this comment and I own the Shimakaze but mine is fine so I looked in the comments and people are saying her paint job is really bad?? The paint on mine is fine... maybe I got lucky (Reminds me of that recent Miku prize that either came out perfect or completely messed up with the stars, prize figures can be occasionally hit and miss unfortunately)

victorviper (3 months ago) #38631898It looks like Taito did a much better job with Ro 500 than they did with their Shimakaze ITEM #199562; that figure was a real disaster.
You might want to link the figure under related items, so people can find this mini-review.

In my opinion, prize figures need reviews more than standard statues. The quality tends to be very inconsistent with them, and there are some gems hidden there that would put some well known manufacturers to shame.
Thank you for the review. It's a very neat figure, except for the few seam lines.
I wish U-511 would get the same love Ro does...
