With the second season going strong and the gang off on their field trip to Kyoto, my package made its way to the middle of the pacific where it eventually found its way into my loving arms. The second in their line of K-ON! figures, today we'll take a look at Alter's version of Hirasawa Yui!

Just a little note for those unfamiliar with Flickr, the site I use to host my photos, clicking on a picture below will bring you to its Flickr page, from there you can click the "All Sizes" button above the image to see much higher resolution versions of these photos.

The box is the pretty standard affair, with windows on the front, top and sides, and information about the figure on the back and bottom. Everything we need to see is there in a nicely compact, aesthetically and practically well designed package.

Striking a heavenly pose, as if floating on...wait, I think I already used that line in a review. Let's see what other angle can I use for this review...The tension in the air was rising, and her breathing became heavy. The driving rhythm stimulating her every inch from the inside out. The heat was becoming almost unbearable as sweat flowed from every pore of her body. Finally, as if after an eternity, her excitement was reaching it's climax...That's when Yui jumped in the air and some guy at Alter did a sculpt of it. And that's how it came to be, Alter's Hirasawa Yui.

The sculpting work follows Alter's tradition of high quality. The folds in her clothing and the slight rising of her hair really give off the impression that Yui is at the peak of her leap. A considerable amount of detail went into the sculpting of Gitah, her beloved Les Paul.

For the most part her guitar is a fairly accurate representation of a flame top, cherry burst Les Paul. There are some minor differences compared to the real deal, but considering it's size it's still an impressive piece of work. The headstock for the most part is also well made, with a good level of detail given to the tuners as seen in the above photos.

One of the unfortunate things is that there are some differences between the production model and the original prototype photos. For one thing, as a board member pointed out on the figure's database page, the wood grain is much less pronounced and difficult to see from a distance. Also, the clear coat is rougher on the production version where it appears much smoother in the prototype pictures. These differences aside, the detail in the guitar is more than acceptable.

Moving on to the strap, I forget what kind of strap Yui uses in the series, but the one presented here is made out of flexible material and painted with an attractive black finish, highlighted by a silver buckle.

Yui's base is simple but attractive. It comes in two parts, the disc section that forms the base and a smaller clear plastic extension that connects the base to the bottom of Yui's left foot. Yui's leg seems well supported with no signs that leaning may be a problem in the future. The connection of her to her base is also very solid.

Moving onto the painting of this figure, this is where I have mixed feelings. For the most part the paint job is well done, there is some nice subtle shading in her clothes but the paint job does come off a bit flat. This isn't really a problem though, as natural shadows given off by the details in her sculpting from the ambient lighting in the room give her great depth.

I don't know if it's just bad luck, but I seem to be having problems with figures having flaws in their paint recently. The paint on Yui's hair and Gitah show prominent signs of either dust contamination or pits in the mold (I'm guessing dust).

As seen in the photo above, Yui's hair is quite bumpy in areas that should be smooth. These little bumps are also evident in miscellaneous areas of her clothes and body and also on Gitah. From normal viewing distances this isn't really a problem, but for close up viewing and photography, these are unfortunate blemishes in such a well sculpted figure.

Spiderman, spiderman, does whatever a spider can...

Also noticeable in the photo above is a bit of what I can only guess is a thread of PVC left over from the casting process that has survived the painting process. That little web like imperfection seems to be along a seam line. This doesn't seem to be a major problem however, as it seems like it could easily be broken off and removed without risking damage to the figure itself.

One of the really things that really bothers me however is the random lint and even a piece of hair stuck in Gitah's paint. As illustrated in the center of the frame in the photo below, there is what looks like a hair embedded in the paint. I don't know if this is from a brush used to texture Gitah's surface or if it's some random chinese guy's eyelash, but I wish it wasn't there. Luckily it isn't very noticeable in normal circumstances but knowing it's there is an annoyance.

Anybody seen my eyelash?

Overall how would I rate this figure? Pretty high I guess. The pose is great, and after seeing the second season's opening, very fitting. The sculpting is very well done and with a good amount of detail. The paint job like I said is a bit of a downer. There are flaws in the paint that really shouldn't be there. It looks like dust was allowed to get onto the figure either before or during the painting process and this is unfortunate. Luckily this isn't a problem from normal viewing distances, but this does add a bit of pain when looking up close or taking tight shots.

If the paint job was better this would definitely be a must have, although it being Yui and made by Alter kind of does that anyway. I'm hoping that the painting flaws found on my copy is the exception and not the norm, if there's anybody that would like to comment on their copy, please do and let others know.

In closing, I'll leave you guys with one final shot of Yui in the opening credits of the new season in the middle of her leap for comparisons sake.

Ashlotte: God, isn't she just the cutest thing?

oh well, Yui is still a good source of a decent glucose rush :)

lol, I totally agree :D Looking at some other reviews of her it seems like the painting wasn't so bad. Maybe I really do just have bad luck when it comes to purchasing figures.

I'm beginning to wonder what was the quality issues that caused Yui's release setback in the first place

psichGood job with the review, although it does suck that you got some QC fail. I haven't taken my Yui out of her prison yet, but I noticed a small bump around her calf. Hopefully that's the only error with mine.

Great nightmare fuel at the end there.

Thanks, but yeah, I think I'm getting used to all these paint flaws :p Hopefully your copy is better than mine, at least I really doubt you'll find a hair stuck in yours.

But man, I love that video lol am I the only one? haha

AshlotteMeh seems like pushing themselves too much is biting em in the ass...

Also must be something wrong with my browser because just looks like a picture to me unless I click it? Ah not that I wanted to click it freaking creepy thing... T_T *goes back to watching Miku videos to forget*

Yeah, I'm hoping the problems with mine are rare or at least limited to this specific figure and not representative of their other works.

Man you should watch the video, I got a great laugh out of it lol.
