Fullmetal Alchemist - Roy Mustang (FuRyu)Fullmetal Alchemist - Roy Mustang (FuRyu)

Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review!

This review will be a bit picture-heavy, but less than my usual (for once) (ノ・_-)☆

This time I’ll be reviewing ITEM #718099 a prize figure (for a change) of one of my favorite characters the Flame Alchemist Roy Mustang brought to us by Furyu. (๑♡⌓♡๑)
Well, what can I say, I’m not as big into FMA anymore than I was before (still love it though), but I just can’t resist him (if there’s something new and at least decent looking that is)…
Judging from the pictures this one was very promising, but just in case I preordered from a shop that’s ok with cancellations (you never know with prize figures after all). But as you can see I happily went through with my order. :3
Well, whatever let’s get started already…

Roy comes in a rather typical pf box without windows, but with ample pictures of the figure. The background, flames and alchemy circle all fit both Roy and the source itself, so I can’t really complain here. For conveniences sake I only included one picture of the sides and top/bottom since they’re the same respectively. The only thing that actually bothers me is the excessive waste of space once you open the box. I don’t really care about having a blister or not as the figure isn’t particularly fragile, but about half the boxes size would’ve been enough imo.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The base as well is a rather simple affair. We get a black disc with another alchemy circle and his name on it. Well, it does it’s job and the big peg holes are reassuring, but I was never a fan of character names on bases, so this feels kinda blah~ to me.

As for the full view…

I love the pose, it’s from one of my favorite fights in the FMA (a very satisfying one) and I think they really nailed it (although he doesn’t look as worn out) View spoilerHide spoilerhttp://www.wtfgamersonly.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/fullmetal-alchemist-roy-mustang_181796-900x688.jpg

Fittingly Roy shows us a fierce expression ready to battle. The face is pretty true to the character and looks good from quite a few angles, which I’m really happy about.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1544620650.jpeg

As you can see he doesn’t come without flaws, looking closely at his hair the surface is very grainy, with quite a number of those excess plastic dots and a few seams here and there. I still think it looks good overall though. Seeing how this is a pf I’m more than willing to overlook flaws to a certain extent, especially since it looks ok from a normal distance.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1544620656.jpeg
I’m pretty sure some of the white bits are specks of dust too, although I’ve been really paranoid with the brush this time around.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Seams can be found on his clothing as well and the paintjob isn’t exactly clean either, but this is still to a normal degree imo and I don’t see a reason to dwell on it. On the other hand I’m quite happy with the details on his uniform like the folds and decorations.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1544620662.jpeg

Apart from the lack of nipples (something a lot of male figures suffer from if I’m not mistaken) his upper body sculpt is really nice. Roy not fully touching his wound could be a flaw, though I wonder if it’s really that far off. What bothers me though, is that the blood is cut off by his clothes.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1544620672.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1544620682.jpeg

The lighter and alchemy circle look ok imo, but otherwise I don’t think his hands are really remarkable (not really a fan of the welds and seams between the fingers but whatever).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1544620692.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1544620702.jpeg

Now I really, really like the dynamic sculpting of his uniform and shirt. It’s billowing in the heat of battle and the shading adds another very nice (and unexpected) touch to it.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1544620719.jpeg

Apart from few small seams and other imperfections his boots look great as well, the sculpting in particular
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1544620725.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
For comparisons sake I put him next to his scale counterpart ITEM #463457 and I think he doesn’t look to shabby next to it, though quite bit a smaller and ofc less detailed.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1544620739.jpeg

At about 17,5cm (excluding the base) and with a supposed character height of 173cm this figure would be a 1/10 scale and sure enough putting him next to the only actual 1/10 I own pretty much proves this (yet Kino is way more petite).

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
OK, so this is a prize figure and flaws like this are quite normal from my experience (although still not nice to look at). Since I have no idea how to reflect my being more lenient in the rating however I decided to skip it altogether. I do love this figure though and it’s not only because I tend to be a bit more “blind” when it comes to my favorite characters. It’s a really good representation of Roy and that for a bargain imo. As a fan I definitely couldn’t pass this up and I’m happy to have added him to my collection. :3

That's it for this review! Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it! ^^
I did try to make this a bit shorter since I feel that’s more appropriate for a prize figure.
If you don’t mind I’d love some constructive criticism,
but if you don’t feel like posting any your thoughts on the figure are also very welcome. :3

Yeah, it's similar to me. I have a lot of mid-sized collections from series I liked when I was a teen or in college and they feel really random in the rest of my collection now. So I was thinking of maybe making a 'shounen shelf' to house my Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist and Code Geass figures. But that would mean that I would have to cut down on what I own from these 3 series + maybe replace some older lower quality figures for newer copies. Some choices will be hard though, like should I replace my ITEM #72238 for ITEM #463456 for example. The MegaHouse Edward is of really good quality, but he is a bit small. I like that Koto's one has Alphonse incorporated too.

Also in general a lot of manufacturers seem on a roll with FMA items, so who knows what will come on the market in the upcoming few years, you might be able to make a Roy prize figure-army. ;)

Maakie (3 months ago) #47266441Seems like a really decent prize figure re-enacting one of his most famous scenes. :) Yeah, there are quite some flaws, but all of them well in the prize figure-realms.
I'm still doubting what to do with my FMA collection in general, but it's good to know this figure is decent if I decide on expanding it! :D
Thanks for the review! :)
Yeah, it's well within a tolerable range for such a "cheap" figure. For me they nailed the important parts well enough (like the face) to overlook them.
If you're unsure I think it's okay not to do anyting for now, I bet you know this better than me since you've probably collecting longer, but not every collection of a beloved series has to be big. There are quite number of favorites I don't collect stuff from, but that doesn't make me love them less in any way. I just have a kind of aesthetic for my collection that I'm aiming for. Also and after selling a lot of figures of beloved characters because I felt the quality didn't match or they weren't represented in an appealing way (at least for my standards), I think it's ok to stop at a certain point or just not buy anything.
Wow, this sounds incredibly patronizing, but I have trouble wording what I want to say... ;_;

ChibiSaturn (4 months ago) #45716945That is also true!
I told my brother to do that for the rem & ram boxes and he did not agree. Ah well, his space to waste. If only all boxes were that simple to store and took up such a small ampunt of space. Collecting would be made much easier
Yeah, I mean you can't force him and you say their boxes are pretty.
I'm personally ok with folding prize figure boxes up unless there's a blister since it's extremely unlikely I'll ever sell them. On the other hand I'd never do that for scale figures for various reasons. Makes them a pain to store, but I started moving those with exchangeable parts to the basement.

broken-Toybox (4 months ago) #45712187Well, it's not like there's a 'right' answer to that anyway as those are just impressions.
I didn't even think about that, but you're right ofc, they can just be folded up. I might just do that for those prite figures that don't have a blister, thanks for mentioning that. :3

ChibiSaturn (4 months ago) #45562625It could just be me or just looking from the pictures. Overall its a nice figure though.
Yes, the boxes for the two i got were super pretty. At least since these have no plastic blisters. You could in theory fold them up to store them easily to take up waaay less room than they do when they aren't folded

broken-Toybox (4 months ago) #45547159Hm, even after looking at him again I don't really feel that way, though you might be right. Usually I compare the hands to the face size, but I'm just not sure this time.
Haha, I can imagine that and tvh it's not like the box designs are so unique and pretty that the oversize is justified in any way. Space is always an issue for collectors as well and I don't feel comfortable throwing boxes out. :/

WindsorSeven (4 months ago) #45540299Wow, his face really is spot on! Glad to see Furyu is improving in that regard. I think the hair looks a little off, but overall I agree that he's pretty great for the price. Might pick him up down the road, so thanks for the review.I don't have much experience with Furyu's figures, but if they're improving that's great. I really can't complain about this ones face, which I'm really happy about, though if it wasn't accurate I wouldn't have picked him up in the first place.
Yeah, well the hair... it's actually not that strange or different from Koto's Roy in the sculpting department, but tge grainy structure makes it look weird. :/

ChibiSaturn (4 months ago) #45537456The figure itself looks pretty good - but, the hands look a little oversized?
Also, the size of their boxes kill me. I ordered their rem/ram figures for my brother and was like dude when I saw the size of the box versus what was inside.

Cantisama (4 months ago) #45536189You already have Kotobukiya's spot-on rendition of Roy, but for the price this seems like a nice pickup. I appreciate that the base is of minimal size and his face is good.
Thanks for sharing ^^
Yeah and surely Koto's is on another level entirely (and will never leave my collection unless someone grabs it from my cold dead body). :3
The base size is indeed pretty reasonable and the face is the thing that ultimately sold me on this one. All in all I have no regrets whatsoever and if anyone makes another figure of him I'll gladly pick that one up as well.^^
