Pocket Monsters - Mew - Mewtwo - G.E.M. EX (MegaHouse)Pocket Monsters - Mew - Mewtwo - G.E.M. EX (MegaHouse)

Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review!

As usual this one will be picture-heavy. Also, if you feel easily offended by people being ‘overly’ critical about figures, please move on (no need to upset yourself). ๑•́ㅿ•̀๑) ᔆᵒʳʳᵞ

For today’s review I picked ITEM #713429 going full nostalgia as Pokemon was a huge part of my childhood. Well, I guess that nostalgia train has a huge blind angle as well. Anyway, this figure of Mew & Mewtwo was brought to us by Megahouse, which I decided to give another chance. After seeing how their Arsène turned out I grew more worried however, and for good reason.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
As usual let’s start off with the box. Since I’m struggling to describe all the colorful shapes on the box let me just say this. I love the design and the color-scheme and the way the pictures of the figures are integrated into it. Design choices like the small pokeball-shaped windows on the side and top are really clever imo. I like the diagonal black stripes and the square-shaped pictures on the back of the box too. Yet there were also complaints about it’s size and I have to agree on that front, it’s kind of excessive for such a small figure (don’t we collectors have enough space issues as is?).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153736.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153745.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153757.jpeg
And here's the culprit... The blister sure does it’s job, but it’s oversized, especially considering that the figure comes in one piece.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
No assembly needed here, so let’s take a look at the base and man it’s a great looking one… at least the idea and if you don’t look to closely at the finished product. Since the figure shows Mew and Mewtwo in an epic battle, they designed a swirl with a color transition from blue to pink adding some effects on the way. I bet those are actual attacks, but while I have some suspicions I’ve got no idea which ones. The whole thing looks like it’s held in place by a pedestal of dark-brown polished wood (ofc it's plastic though), pretty neat-looking I dare say, at least better than some nondescript plastic circle.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153768.jpeg

The smoke effect at the bottom of the swirl is a nice addition, but it gives a first impression of the most major complaint I’ll voice about this figure and that’s the truly excessive amount of seam lines. If this was just about figure parts being connected in a much too visible manner this would be one thing, but well… it isn’t. Luckily these aren’t the worst, maybe due to the grey color of the smoke, making them harder to see.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153775.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153789.jpeg

The swirl or whirlwind (whatever you wanna call it) looks fairly neat. Upon closer inspection the surface looks kind of rough (or more like it was rough before the paint got applied) and some details could definitely be crisper, but what bothers me more are the parts that have been attached later in such a conspicuous manner. I’m not sure how hard it’d have been to make the base in one piece, although even if it’s impossible there must have been a smarter way to construct it.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153801.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153815.jpeg
Oh yeah, there’s also a big fat seam at the lower back part of the swirl (at least its just at the back…).

If there’s one thing I like apart from the pedestal it’s the color-gradient. That one looks really good.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153825.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153831.jpeg
Sadly, there are also seams further up and other weird lines that definitely shouldn’t be there. Plus, the lightning effect looks kinda tacky paint-wise imo.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Now for the spinaround…
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153844.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153859.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153871.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153886.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153901.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153916.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153927.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153940.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153954.jpeg
To be fair, you’ve got a lot of options displaying this figure as it looks good from a huge number of angles. You can basically pick your favorite at random.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Taking a closer look at Mewtwo, it’s fierce facial expression sure matches the heat of battle. And then the seam line woes begin again... There’s a huge one running along it’s head, another one at the shoulder and you can also see one between the ‘fingers’.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153966.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153972.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153976.jpeg
Excess bits of plastic are another problem this figure has. You can find some on the body as well and I don’t plan to explicitly list them all (heck I didn’t even take pictures of all of them since it just depresses me).

Again, I’m not sure which attack this is (and tbh I don’t care all that much either), but it looks ok. There’s some paint bleeding here and there and again the lightning effect looks a bit tacky but that’s it. The seam doesn’t bother me as much, since it’s hard to see on the dark orb. The scratches on the fingers holding it are another story though.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153987.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545153993.jpeg

Back to the body and we see (what a surprise) more seam lines. As I said I’m mostly complaining about those where parts haven’t been attached to each other, but those are rather bad as well. Way to obvious and creating ugly gaps.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154001.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154015.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154024.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154033.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154045.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154049.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154061.jpeg
Yet for all my complaining about the seams (which goes into my rating for the sculpting), the paintjob looks fairly neat. Ofc it’s not perfect, but there’s hardly any uncleanliness in it and the shading while subtle is effective enough.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Since we’re done with Mewtwo now let’s also take a look at cute little Mew. It’s wearing a more surprised expression than anything else, but I think that’s really adorable (the mouth in particular).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154070.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154079.jpeg

Well, is there really a need to say it? It’s seams all over again, but since Mew is tiny, the number is also smaller. Other than that, I have no complaints as the paint looks ok.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154089.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154101.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154110.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154115.jpeg
Yes, there’s a gap between the heart-shaped effect and Mew, but so what? I’ve had the pictures for a few days now but even now going through them again I feel drained and disappointed.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Oh, and to put this all into perspective a pseudo-size comparison...
The whole figure reaches about 18-18,5cm, not the 19cm stated on the item page (I'm not even surprised), making it just a bit bigger than your average figma.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1545154128.jpeg
Just for fun I also measured Mew and Mewtwo. Those measurements should be taken with a grain of salt however as neither’s pose is very suitable for it. Both have pretty dynamic poses after all. Anyway, Mewtwo reaches roughly 12cm, while the Pokedex states its normal height as 2m. As a scale this would be 1/16⅔. Now Mew was even harder but it’s something around 3-4cm, making it a bit bigger scale-wise (1/13⅓-1/10). Honestly, I don't care about the difference, Mew is already a shrimp as is. I just wanted to put this into perspective, because I’ll obviously say a few words about the price too…

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Ok, where to begin? Oh yeah, I really want to like this actually, because I love the concept so much. Apparently MH decided to make it as hard as possible however. For me this is a nightmare of seam lines (and believe me, I know how exaggerated this sounds). They wouldn’t even bother me all that much, but I can still see most of them even from an arm’s length (or further) away. I might just be bad at picking MH figures, because my recent purchases all felt way overpriced for the shoddy QC. And I know some people will think that this figure has been comparatively cheap, but if you consider the size I can’t agree to that line of thinking tbh.
Maybe MH just isn’t the manufacturer for me as I am kind of nitpicky (they definitely lost the little trust I still had in them). So unless I know a figure I want turned out good I’ll stay away from them as far as possible. Actually the more elaborate the prototype the warier I’ll be...
Another thing, and this might be quite irrational, but seeing how gorgeous ITEM #61401 is I got the feeling their quality actually dropped over the years. Yet with so little examples I can just assume that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Luckily (or maybe not) my boyfriend really likes the figure and is blind towards most flaws unless I point them out (and I honestly don’t have the heart to do so). Meaning I’m basically stuck with this thing, though I moved it over to his small collection.

That's it for this review! Thanks for sticking with me to the end and sorry if you feel offended…
This is all just my personal opinion and you’re obviously free to disagree.
If you don’t mind I’d love some constructive criticism, but if you don’t feel like posting any your thoughts on the figure are also very welcome. :3

pokelov (2 months ago) #57981088i understand so considering all things at what price would you buy this ?40 euro max i thinkYeah, probably along those lines since this feels like an elaborate prize figure. Then again I don't know what the aftermarket for this is like and the feeling of what something is "worth" is something very subjective.

pokelov (2 months ago) #57964507without the seams line what score you would give to this figure?I don't really like these what-ifs tbh, since I can only work with what I've got at hand, but I doubt I'd give it more than a 8/10. Even without the seams there are other flaws, the figure is still tiny and some parts look downright cheap (the attack effects and the swirl for example).

I'm sorry to hear that, but believe me this is not the type of review I enjoy writing. I do get that disappointment though, that's what I felt unboxing this figure too. :/

Oh no, reviews are my favorite kinds of blogs and recently you seem to have acquired a lot of figures I am interested in, but decided not to pick up msyelf. :)

Yeah, same here. I own the Mewtwo Amiibo (twice actually, LOL), but I can accept the seamlines and small size because of the price. With this Mewtwo you are paying the price of a 'cheap' scaled for what is basically something smaller than a Figma. :/ That was probably also one of the more scary pictures of this review. I knew he was tiny, but not THAT tiny.

I'm pretty sure with the huge amount of people disappointed with this figure, it won't get too hard to find it for a cheaper price later. And in the small chance it gets expensive..well, then it won't be worth the money for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I actually had my doubts too about pre-ordering the Mewtwo Nendoroid, but as I was actually surprised at the 'low' release price as it's a 2-in-1 Nendoroid, I decided to go for it.

I think most of the Dragon's Crown MegaHouse figures are okay-ish, I only know of ITEM #165800 being famous for her ugly base. I assume their quality won't be as good as the 'MegaHouse Golden Age' (as I'm going to call it from now on :P ), but they should be better than the things that were released in the last couple of years. Judging from user pictures that Utena looks decent, so no glaring mistakes, but already looking lower quality than the Dragon's Crown figures...

Hehe, but there are also a lot of people saying the 'Golden Age of Figure Collecting' was when prepainted figures were not out there much yet and most figures were garage kit or otherwise made in small quantities and it was more a community-thing than an online-shopping-thing (late 90's/early 00's). Anyway, for me the era with most of the figures relevant to my interests and my feeling of getting the most bang for your buck was 2007-2012. I was also a lot less salty back then when a figure had some defects, because figures barely passed the 80-euros mark including shipping and if you got a couple together for the customs charges, most I ever paid was like 90 euros total. Right now figures are already 120 euros before any shipping/customs, so a scale can easily set you back 150-200 euros...that is double of what it was in 'My Figure Collecting Golden Age'. So with figures I've gotten in the last few years and paid full pre-order-price for I was extra salty when any defects showed up which would have been acceptable had I paid a lot less for them...

Rambling again, sorry. :')

Maakie (6 months ago) #47275536I'm happy to find a review from you of this figure! :D As you may have noticed, I'm currently on a blog-reading spree. :')
As a huge Mewtwo fan I was very close in pre-ordering this one, but I hold off because of the expectation that price would not match quality and I would rather wait out the aftermarket. Since this figure's release I read quite some comments on here that confirmed this scare I had, especially when it comes to seamlines. I also spoke to a local collector who had a crazy defect: A part of the copyright decal (that is probably supposed to be underneath the base) was stuck on Mewtwo's arm. How the fuck does that pass QC...
Anyway, now to your review of this figure: What was new for me (and which I adore a lot), is that in your pictures I could finally see Mew's face better and oh gosh, especially this picture: static.myfigure... so cute!!! As for the rest: seamline-hell, yegh. Mewtwo's arms look like they could be falling off any moment. >.> I'm also sorry to read you got drained and disappointed about this figure while writing this up. :(
So it's clear for me, I still want this figure for the nice little diorama it is, but I am planning to pay 75% of it's retail price at most for this. >:( To be honest, I hope I can find it for around 50%... :X
As for my own Mewtwo collection, I recently got his Nendoroid and am way more happy with it than expected! Check out this beauty! PICTURE #2074551 <3 Even if Nendoroids might not be your thing, I really recommend this one. It has a lot less seamlines even though it's also jointed. OTL
Oh, one last comment which I found interesting: I own ITEM #61401 and she is gorgeous. Close to perfection. A few other figures I own from MegaHouse and love for their quality are:
ITEM #152
ITEM #18544
ITEM #33451
ITEM #72238
ITEM #72239
Notice the pattern that all of them released inbetween 2007-2012. I guess those 5 years were their peak, because nowadays I just know MegaHouse as those people making disappointing quality and overpriced Digimon figures... :/
I'm keeping myself from going full-rant mode, but I feel like in general 2007-2012 was an peak moment for this hobby with quality getting better, but prices not exploding yet. It could be just because I am very nostalgic to that time, as I was most invested in the hobby during those years.
Thank you, that really means a lot to me!! :3 And ofc I’ve noticed, how could I not, I sure hope I don’t bore you by now x3
In hindsight I should’ve done that too, because I was already expecting to be underwhelmed. But wow, that copyright decal thing is awful and what you’re describing really just confirms the suspicion I had about MH’s quality getting worse. I’ll definitely stay clear of them as far as possible (basically treating them like they don’t exist by now), because I just can’t take a company serious that let’s shit like that pass and slap LE on basically every figure, to make people overpay even more.
I’m glad you liked those pictures, I found it really important to include them as well, since the promo pictures focus mostly on a certain angle. The arms, well they kinda look like you can just detach them similar to Nendo parts with those huge seams (the legs do as well).
About feeling drained, well it think it’s also been related to having to repeat the same complaints over and over again (I’m not exactly fond of doing that as it gets boring pretty fast).
I wish you the best of luck finding the figure for a good deal (if my boyfriend wasn’t so fond of it I’d probably have sold the figure off cheaply x3).
I’ve actually read your review about that Nendoroid (don’t worry about recommending them I think I cracked the 3digits last month… ahahaha….) as well (really great work btw!) and I was close to preordering it before too, I just had a feeling it wouldn’t fit since I had sold off ITEM #215491. I’m really regretful about not preordering as the articulation and overall quality looks great. Yet the aftermarket price seems a bit more than what I’m willing to pay right now (as expected of a Pokemon Nendo).
That Rorona is great, I love her too and looking at her as well as this figure I really can’t believe they both come from the same company. -_- Your other examples sure look great as well judging by the pictures, but MH didn’t (and still doesn’t) pamper to my interests that much so my references will probably remain very limited. I did think about getting their Dragon’s Crown scales and Utena a few times. But they are all beyond the good quality year mark and I’m way to apprehensive about their more recent offerings.
I can’t really say I fully understand those kinds of feelings since I just haven’t been collecting that long, but I have a few “older” figures as well and I’m quite smitten with them and their quality.
You talking about those times makes me wish I’d have started collecting sooner though. :3

spinners_grove (6 months ago) #46930336Sooooo, I was just doing some casual browsing after reading the comments on BLOG #41723, and I stumbled upon the wallet minefield that is resin Pokemon statues. That is to say, most of them are so expensive that I don't even find them tempting, but then I saw this one. I'm going to do a bit more research on the artist/company and so on, but I just wanted to share (and point out that there are some pretty nifty Mewtwo ones as well).Someone already mentioned that one in the comments here as well and I'm really tempted. Still have to pay for tuition next month, so I just can't afford that right now. ^^"
The expensive ones look nice as well, but other than being pricy they're huge and heavy as well, I just don't have that kind of space anymore. x3 If you find something nice and reasonably sized, I'd love to know though.^^
