! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

The pantyshot in this review has been put in spoiler, so this is a sfw review!

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Fubuki ENTRY #53425 from Kantai Collection ~Kan Colle~ ENTRY #52215 ! This figure ITEM #236237 is made by Kotobukiya ENCYCLOPEDIA #7621 .

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Kantai Collection (translated 'Fleet Collection') is a browser game in which you have cute personifications of Warships to build a fleet with. As their commander, you 'collect' these girls and fight battles which are a combination of strategy and action. Kantai Collection became popular very fast and within 2 years of the game release, an anime was already getting made. As of now, Kantai Collection is still a huge multimedia project, with also games on other platforms, manga and light novels expanding the universe. More recently there have been some competition from 'Azur Lane'. Azur Lane is a very different game when it comes to gameplay, but it also uses warship personifications and has characters designed after the same ships as many Kantai Collection ones.

Fubuki is a ship from the Destroyer class, she is seen by many as the most 'blank slate' character. She is young and very eager to learn more, while looking up at her senpai Akagi ENTRY #52413 .

The reason why and how I got her

The moment I saw Fubuki's design for the first time, I fell in love. She reminded me a lot of the style of Humikane Shimada ENTRY #21456 , one of my favorite artists. The artist of Fubuki, Shibafu, is also a confirmed fan of his works. When the first Kantai Collection figures came into existence, I was surprised that it took quite a while before Fubuki's first scaled figure was announced. I know she wasn't the most popular when it comes to design, but she was the main character! Anyhow, well over 2 years after the first Kantai Collection figures came to exist, Kotobukiya announced this figure and I pre-ordered it right away to show my love for Fubuki!

Her posing is directly modelled after the main graphic used for Fubuki in the game. As you will see soon, the figure is not an 100% match with the official artwork, although it has the same feel and the same color palette. Fubuki's artist, Shibafu, seems to be not very well liked in the Kantai Collection fandom and although I personally like her work, there have definitely been improvements in the look and anatomy of this figure when compared to the official artwork.

The box has a fitting theme for the Kantai Collection game and has big windows so you can get a good look at Fubuki! Also nice are the hexagon windows on the side, referencing to the hexagon shapes used in the game.

Notice a big license sticker from Kadokawa on the front. As far as I know, no bootlegs have been made of this figure, but it's always good to be careful!

After opening the top of the box, there is a message waiting for you from Fubuki! Translated it either means 'Thanks for the good work, Commander!' or 'Good morning, Commander' depending on which Translating Tool I open this up in. Both are funny things to read when opening up a figure for the first time!

Fubuki comes with only the following parts:
- Main figure screwed onto the base.
- Two small connector pieces so you can attach this figure to other figures from the same line, if you want.

Ain't she a cutie? :D The smaller base with her standing on only two hexagons is surprsingly sturdy and looks very unique!

The Figure - cast off

I was quite surprised to find that the figure was made in a way which makes her skirt easily removable, thus being a cast-off. Pictures in spoiler because of NSFW: View spoilerHide spoiler

Just some plain white panties with minimal shading and although it looks cute, it's not much special. Because of the panties being so very simple, it feels like it was easy for Kotobukiya to make this cast-off with how her sculpt was done as a gimmick, rather than having this cast-off well-planned beforehand.

Although it does not look bad at all, I find this look to be very simple and not adding much to the figure. So after one quick look and making these pictures, I decided to put on her skirt again to never remove anymore. I do have to give them credit that the shading around her thighs is very good looking!

The base

The base comes with 2 possible set-ups:
- The full grid
- Each foot on 1 hexagon

The full grid is not bad looking, but because of it being so off-center it looks a bit like you are 'missing' the rest of the set if you have her displayed like this.

Removing the extra grid can be done by simply 'unclicking' the rest of the base. The following parts of the review will show her more simple base.

Looking at all the details!

Starting as always with the face and my gosh, is she cute! The open mouth has been sculpted very well and her eyes look fierce! She also has a cute blush and little glimmer on her cheeks, showing that she still is a bit flustered when in 'attack mode'.

Her bangs are sculpted very well and vary in different darker brown shades.

Her hairdo ends with a cute and small ponytail at the back. I like how the hair at the back of her head are sculpted as if the hair is pulled very tightly around the hair elastic.

Unfortunately we have also come to the 'worst side' of her head, multiple small paint splotches and quite a big gap between the front and back half of the hairpiece can be seen.

The left-side is quite a bit better looking, with less of a gap and way better looking paint. There have also been a few details sculpted in her ear.

Fubuki's sailor shirt is simple, but does it's work well. There are a few small paint letdowns at the blue and white lines at the bottom of the shirt and at the sleeves.

There are also multiple straps in this character design, I like how you can see the difference in tension between the straps connected to the big backpiece (they are tightly fit and creased on her shoulders) and the handpiece, which is being held up by her (thus, looser tension).

The back of the figure shows some more detailed creases in the shirt and further shows the tension on the straps I mentioned at the previous picture. Also notice that there is a big transparent piece at her lower back, this is probably needed for the support of the heavy back piece. It's quite hard to notice this extra attachment when just casually looking at the figure, so it's hidden well.

To be honest, when I did the first look at the back piece...I was quite disappointed. The seamlines were very visible and the patterns across it are very repetitive. The sculpt of the individual pieces is nice, but I feel like they had a hard time with this part during production/design and it was a complicated sculpt consisting of many pieces. Maybe that's why so many manufacturers did not dare to make a figure of her?

There are multiple movable parts on this figure, they are not very noticeable when you have the figure on display, but it was fun to see the parts dangling around every now and then while I was moving her around a lot to make pictures.

Fubuki's left hand is delicately resting on the handpiece. I like how there is a small crease sculpted in her arm and quite some shading visible on her skin. The hands themselves have a small indication of where the fingernails should be, but no excessive detailing. I have seen quite detailed fingernails sculpted and painted on a lot of older Kotobukiya figures, so I decided to look into it a bit and all those figures seem to be 1/7 or 1/6 scale. Maybe Kotobukiya found it something too small to do for an 1/8?

Fubuki's right hand has a bit of a seamline showing, but not too bad. I like the posing of her hand here.

Her leg pieces are in a similar style as the rest, but are definitely the best looking of all three mecha parts, with them having the highest amount of details for such a small piece and least amount of seamlines. They can also be shifted forward, of which I forgot to make a picture. Sorry.

The straps to hold the pieces at her legs are a bit basic looking, but I like how they seem to be made of a thick material. Whenever I do see designs like this, I wonder if those straps alone are enough to keep up such big pieces, cosplayers of her must have a hard time with this!

Also notice here the extensive detailing on the back of her knee. This is the most detailed-shaded skin I have on a Kotobukiya figure so far!

The front of her knees also have some nice detailing and let's not forget her characteristic socks with little anchors on them!

Even though Fubuki wears quite a short skirt, it is hard to see her panties from any normal angle due to her posing. So when you want to take a look at her panties, you really have to stick your head underneath there. Some panty-shots in spoiler: View spoilerHide spoiler

Even though we know from the cast-off that the panties are simple, it's not that bothersome when seeing them like this. Considering there is more of a back-view than a front-view, this also explains why there is more detailing and creasing at the back.

Some more close-ups of what is possibly one of my favorite parts in the design of this character. I like how there is also shading painted inbetween the different seams on the shoes.

As earlier mentioned, her simple base is very interesting looking. It's like her feet are the only parts making the grid light up. Depending on how you display the figure, the base can easily blend away in most environments.

Size comparison of the figure versus the base, as you can see she barely takes up space!

The Points

Positive
- Figure is actually an improvement over the original character design!
- Interesting base design.
- Multiple movable parts make for a fun gimmick.

Neutral
- Some small letdowns in paint.
- Weird cast-off option.

Negative
- A lot of big seamlines at the backpiece.
- Could have gotten some more details and shading especially looking at her quite recent release.

The Scores

Sculpting 7/10
There are some very nice parts in the sculpting such as her cute face and shoes, but overall it's a bit underwhelming.

Painting 7/10
I also expected a bit more here, there is a lot of nice shading and small detailing to be found, but then you have a lazy pattern on the mechanical pieces...eh.

Posing 9/10
Very in-character and fierce, I love it!

Base 9/10
Barely takes up any space, very sturdy, can look quite 'invisible', is directly related to the game, multiple ways to display and the possibility to attach her to other figures from this same line. What more do you want? Well, I'm also the type that likes elaborate (diorama) bases, but when you keep it simple and it's done this well, I think it also allows for a high score to be given!

Packaging 8/10
Nice colors and big windows with a cute message waiting for you when you open the box!

Enjoyment 8/10
As a huge fan of Fubuki and this being her first (and still only!) scaled figure, I knew I was going to be happy with her. Unfortunately I was let down a bit in sculpt and paint which makes my enjoyment an 8 rather than a 9 or 10.

Availability

Unfortunately with Fubuki being the 'plain jane' of the franchise, her figure also did not get a lot of attention. She was released for ¥8,2K and second-hand nowadays seems to go for ¥5-7K, so you can find her for quite a bit less than her release price and if you search well and/or be patient enough, can get her close to half-off.

Conclusion

If you are a fan of Fubuki and want a static or bigger figure of her, there is not much choice. You have either this or the SEGA prize figure ITEM #314583 . I also own the SEGA prize figure and while it is pretty nice for a prize, the quality does not even come close to this figure. The SEGA one also really looks like her anime counterpart, so it will depend on your taste if you prefer that over this one. If you want a good Fubuki, the figure reviewed here is probably the best you are going to get.

If you're not into Kantai Collection and/or Fubuki, but dig the style, I would still recommend her especially considering her lower aftermarket price.

And to finish it!

I am currently still unboxing most of my collection after moving houses, but here is how she is displayed right now:

~In my temporary Kantai Collection display~ As you can see, Fubuki is a true 1/8 and with that quite a bit bigger than the average prize figure. I also did get a bit more appreciation for her mecha parts after putting her next to a prize figure, luckily it's very visible even from a distance that she is a scaled figure with the higher quality of paint and sculpt.

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be about a Strike Witch again, this time Minna ITEM #61483 made by Alter!

Maakie (1 month ago) #48968753Oh, wow! I completely missed out on that, I thought there was only that earlier teaser. Going to look for it after I finish this message, thanks for letting me know! :)
You're very welcome :) The quality's not great due to the trailer being filmed off a screen, but I'd say it's more than enough for every KC fan to go nuts. I sure did ;)

JustMoE (1 month ago) #48827032The trailer for season 2 has been shown for the first time just recently, so it should definitely be coming. Can't wait!!! :)

Criscokid (1 month ago) #48835375Another Fubuki fan here, great review on this figure! I actually almost purchased this figure last night, I had her in my cart, but decided to wait till my next shop to get her. At least now I know what to expect when I do get her, thanks!

Yay, more Fubuki fans! :D You'll definitely won't regret getting this one, I hope you will enjoy her as much as I do. :) Thanks for liking the review!

Maakie (1 month ago) #48807629Yeah, Fubuki is pretty much what Yoshika is for Strike Witches. She is pure-hearted and tries so much, what's not to like? :)
I thought it was pretty much confirmed for season 2 to be about the Nishimura Fleet? But everything regarding S2 of the anime has been so silent, so I'm a bit doubting if the anime will still come if especially Azur Lane is now trying to take the spot of Kantai Collection.
Same. Even with her being 'plain', she is still the main character of the anime and also has a big role in the game, so it's really surprising. Maybe because of the backlash on the character designer within the fandom, that might have influenced figure manufacturers holding back on making more of her. Anyhow, I'm glad Kotobukiya regularly makes 'underdogs' their figures. :) I don't mind the typical Kotobukiya quality because you just pretty much get what you pay for and so far I've never had any bad buy with them. :)

JustMoE (1 month ago) #48800373Sure, Buki may be somewhat plain, but she tries so hard and always does her best. How can anyone dislike such a good-hearted little destroyer?! ^^ Personally I was disappointed after seeing Shigure most likely being the MC in season 2 of the anime. Hopefully she'll at least appear, didn't notice her in the trailer :/
It's a shame there's basically no other options for Fubuki, especially for scale collectors. Been thinking about the two nendroids, since they fit her IMO, but the scale still looks most temping. Glad to read you were more nitpickimng and not so much seriously bothered by those mentioned flaws. Sounds like typical Kotobukiya quality regarding the paint job, plus the weird standard removeable skirt :D

Maakie (1 month ago) #48695124Glad you enjoyed and I am always happy to hear from another Fubuki fan. :D
I really recommend this figure to everyone liking Fubuki. I go into nitpick-mode for my reviews, but overall this figure is very nice and I am happy to have her on display. Plus...there is not much other choice on the market, haha! But at least I'm glad it's Kotobukiya that ended up making her. :)

JustMoE (1 month ago) #48693684Thanks a lot for taking the time and writing this very in-depth analyses of the figure :)
As a fellow Buki fan who has been considering this figure for quite a while, this is very helpful. Hopefully you'll continue enjoying her despite the small (IMO) flaws.
