When I arrived in Tokyo it was really cold. It actually started snowing on the day before Wonfes. On the Saturday before Wonfes I took a stroll around Akihabara looking for figures on my wishlist. When I come to Tokyo it is usually either very cold or very hot. The winter event for Comiket and Wonfes are all freezing. And those two summer events occur in days when Tokyo is very hot and humid.

For lodging I stayed at a capsule hotel and then at a regular budget hotel. I stayed in Kanda and Asakusabashi which is one stop from Akihabara, here's a view from my window. Staying in Tokyo can be cheap depending on where you stay, I used online travel websites to book and did not have much issue without speaking much Japanese. Transportation around the city was very convenient, everything I needed was accessible by train or metro.

Before Wonfes day I went to the Kaiyodo store in Radio Kaikan building in Akihabara to buy the Wonfes guidebook. The guidebook is 2500 yen and you show it to enter the event. I also saw it for sale in the smaller Toranoana stores in Akihabara. Usually I buy it before the event to save waiting in lines. If you can't buy the guidebook ahead of time, you can always pick it up at the event. From what I've seen the books usually don't sell out at the event.

I left my hotel around 8am and arrived at the Makuhari Messe around 9 to 9:30am. The event started at 10am. But already the line was long. The line is tolerable, after having experienced Comiket twice, one becomes basically immune to long lines. Unfortunately you cannot just enter the Makuhari Messe lobby and walk in the event, they had us wrap around the entire convention hall which is huge as it is. I think I stood in line outside for around 45 minutes before I could get in.

The Wonfes event is broken into several large halls. Roughly 30% of the event is vendor booths, where big companies like GSC, Native, and the like show their new releases, sculpts, and painted protos. The rest of the event is for hobbyists to sell their own garage kits. Unlike Comiket, Wonfes is based largely on figure garage kits. There are also gundam, dolls, and other variants. Cosplay is also popular here between halls and outside. The scale of the event is probably 10% of Comiket but there is still a huge number of people!

Since I wasn't planning to buy garage kits (I collect only PVC) I went to the vendor stalls first to check what the new releases are! This to me is the most exciting part since I got to see the newest announcements, sculpts, and painted protos live. The lines were already very long at opening and the internet reception got to be really bad. Unlike Comiket I don't think the cellular companies setup temporary radio stations so it was almost impossible to upload news to MFC and Twitter. Uploading pictures live to the internet was a challenge and I did the bulk of my uploads when I got back to the hotel.

My figure collection is mainly 1/4 bunny figures, BINDing and FREEing have product lines that are dedicated to these types of figures. A picture of my collection is here: picture/2118686...

I decided to go to the Native line first as they had some 1/4 figure announcements I wanted to see, usually in their BINDing bunny line. Native have the longest line so it was good to get their earlier. I brought my good camera instead of just the iphone camera for the first time to Wonfes, and I wanted to snap some good quality photos of new releases for Native and FREEing.

I took some photos of new releases. Here are some new releases I was interested in:

And some sculpts they showed:

Afterwards I moved onto the GSC show area. And there were stands dedicated to FREEing's figures. There is a big bulletin board showing new announcements. A lot of nice announcements.

Here are some photos I took of new sculpt prototypes and paint jobs. It's not a full complete list, just some I'm interested in. Some of the FREEing line was also shown in other booth areas, like there dedicated booths for Fate and CC figure was shown in Megahouse's booth. I really liked the Zero Two and Erza figures.

After Native and FREEing I began to just walk around and see what's being displayed. I really liked this Prime statue of Reika. It looks 1/4 and I imagine it will cost a fortune.

Once I finished with the vendor booth hall. I went to the garage kit halls to check out what hobbyists were selling. I found a lot of the sculpts to be very high quality. The garage kits do get expensive, some as high as 20,000 yen. A lot of the great looking kits were sold out very fast it seems. You will have to wait in line early to get these fast. I imagine they sell out as fast as popular items sell out in Comiket. Here are some photos I took from the garage kit halls:

Thanks for sharing your experience with us! I had no idea that vendor booths only occupied 30% of the event.
Also got surprised with the Freeing's bulletin board pic. I didn't know about the re-release of the Saekano bunnies without stockings nor the Senran Kagura bunnies and P5 swimsuit figures. Looking forward to seeing how they'll turn out.

So many people! And you say this is only 1/10 of Comiket population... *scared*

Sounds like you had fun. Thanks for sharing your story and pics ^^

Thanks for the pics!

Was surprised at the Psycho-Pass figures though
(they look exactly like the old Union Creative ones?)
