Kantai Collection ~Kan Colle~ - Z1 - SPM prize Figure by SEGAKantai Collection ~Kan Colle~ - Z1 - SPM prize Figure by SEGA

MaakieMaakie4 months agoReview
! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

This is a review of a figure in an outfit that is very short, the few pantyshots are put in a spoiler!

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Z1 (Liebrecht Maass) ENTRY #76696 from Kantai Collection ~Kan Colle~ ENTRY #52215 ! This figure ITEM #470984 is made by SEGA ENTRY #7642 . A fun fact to add is that this figure's sculptor is Me-n ENTRY #8328 , who was the sculptor for a lot of earlier Strike Witches ENTRY #2 and Mecha Musume ENTRY #477 figures. I found it personally very nice to see he still is busy in this niche, even with prize figures!

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Kantai Collection (translated 'Fleet Collection') is a browser game in which you have cute personifications of Warships to build a fleet with. As their commander, you 'collect' these girls and fight battles which are a combination of strategy and action. Kantai Collection became popular very fast and within 2 years of the game release, an anime was already getting made. As of now, Kantai Collection is still a huge multimedia project, with also games on other platforms, manga and light novels expanding the universe. More recently there has been some competition from 'Azur Lane'. Azur Lane is a very different game when it comes to gameplay, but it also uses warship personifications and has characters designed after the same ships as many Kantai Collection ones.

Z1, also known under the name Leberecht Maass, is a tomboy-ish girl. Her character designer is the very famous Shimada Humikane ENTRY #21456 , who is a pioneer in the Mecha Musume genre. In the Kan Colle fandom, there have always been a lot of rumors of Z1 actually being a boy, but this has never been confirmed.

The reason why and how I got her

I picked this cutie up when a local store had a sale on prize figures. If you want to see that loot and more, you can check out this loot blog of mine: BLOG #41175 .

Although this figure is not specifically made after a specific artwork, her posing is quite similar to her standard CG in the game, but in an more 'battle ready' look.

Z1 comes in quite a typical prize figure box. No windows, instructions on the back and artwork on the sides. I quite like the colors of this box and the size is good.

Z1 comes in an really extensive blister with quite some parts for a prize figure! She comes with:
- Main figure
- Right arm loose
- Ship parts
- Base (and not a small one either!)

I'm really happy to get a prize figure with a good blister again, as the last few I opened all came in those horrible 'cardboard triangles', example: PICTURE #1235787

Although minimal assembly is required, it's nice that instructions like this are included.

The first thing you probably notice after seeing her for the first time is that base is HUGE. It doubles as a riser, which a person like me with a ton of figures, really likes. On the other hand, I can understand how a lot of people with smaller collections or smaller displays don't like this. It's quite an interesting choice from SEGA to be honest.

And now to give some more attention to the cutie standing on the base, here is Z1 herself! And wow, did she blow me away, especially considering she is a prize figure! Her expression is really nice and the ship parts pretty detailed!

Looking at all the details!

Z1's expression is really nice! Her shouting mouth does not give the 'muppet effect' quite some other prize figures have with open mouths. Furthermore, her eye decals are looking nice and clean and the sculpt in her bangs is looking good too!

Unfortunately there is one big downside you can see here on the left side of her cap (and already a bit on her collar) and that is that there are quite some visible glue-spots on this figure.

I really like her high-collared shirt, it also has sculpted buttons on it.

The two small ribbons from the back of her cap are looking good, as well as the sculpt and paint on the back of her collar. Her hair has some visible seamlines and a few smudges in paint, but overall very acceptable for a prize.

Similar issues can be seen when looked at the figure from the right side, but I really want to emphasize that this figure is a cheap prize figure, so issues like this are to be expected.

Except for the glue-spots near the collar, the rest of her outfit is looking very nice. Especially for a prize figure, the paint is well done on such small, straight lines. There even is a small red line through the middle of the clasp on her scarf.

Z1's dress is a simple design, but I always loved it. It's very fitting for a tomboy-ish girl and those small anchors at the bottom are sculpted well.

Most of the view of her back is obstructed by her ship parts, which have a nice attachment piece to the figure. It's definitely a lot better looking than some 'tricks' from other Kantai Collection figures, such as: PICTURE #2134804 , my only issue is that I don't know if it's sturdy enough if this figure were to be displayed for many years. At the moment of writing she is now displayed for half a year with no signs (yet) of the ship parts sagging or her back leaning.

Her hands are really delicately sculpted and although her fingernails do not have their own sculpt, the small indicaitions of nailpolish give it some extra detail!

As with all the mecha parts on this figure, you will notice that the lack of shading makes the pieces look really 'flat', although there is quite some detail sculpted.

This is definitely one of the figures I will try to improve shading on once I get better with painting figures! The very good sculpt will really pop if there were some shading on here! Again, shading was not to be expected of a prize figure. I'm already surprised they could use such a complicated sculpt for a figure so cheap!

Z1 wears simple white panties, but there is a bit of detail down there sculpted. It's interesting how little chance of an accidental pantyshot there actually is with this figure, even with the super short dress.

This shot pretty much rules out Z1 being a boy, with no sight of a small bulge visible there. On the other hand...there have been many crosdressing male figures in the past with no/minimal bulge, so otokonoko fans can continue to dream, right?

Her panties are low-rise, which is well-known trait of the character designer.

There is fairly visible seamline through the middle of her legs on both sides. The sculpt of the legs by itself is quite well done, she has nicely shaped thighs for such a petite body type.

Almost all of the Kantai Collection girls come with really cool shoe designs and the same can be said for Z1! There is quite some detail in the sculpt and the paint is looking fine.

My specific copy of this figure has quite a chunk of plastic missing on her left foot at the right side, I guess there was a peg removed there and it took a bit too much PVC with it...

As you can see, the difference in detailing and painting on the ship parts is huge, which is why I am thinking of displaying my scaled Kantai Collection figures seperately from my prize and action figures from this series. This prize figure is really neat, and she actually looks less good than she is when displayed next to a scaled figure.

The Points

Positive
- Really nice and fitting posing.
- Impressive sculpt for a prize figure, especially on ship parts.
- Her base doubles as a riser which in my opinion is definitely a plus, although I can imagine people disliking it too

Neutral
- Some paint letdowns here and there.
- A bit more visible seamlines than expected.
- Unknown yet if the ship-parts attached will be too heavy for this figure at a later point, possibly causing a lean.

Negative
- My specific copy has quite some visible glue-spots, but this can vary from each individual piece.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
Really impressive for a prize figure! Only some small letdowns in seamlines.

Painting 8/10
Some random errors here and there, as to be expected of a prize figure, but overall quite some details with smaller lines done pretty well!

Posing 9/10
Very in-character and interesting to look at! Now I just hope that she won't become a leaner later on. Only time will tell, which is why I am not deducting points for this (yet).

Base 8/10
Very basic, but it's a riser at the same time, which I personally really like as it saves me the hassle of actually having to place her on a riser!

Packaging 8/10
Holds the figure well and has a nice design.

Enjoyment 9/10
I really like the design of Z1 and the quality of this prize figure blew me away! I still have to unbox my matching Z3 ITEM #470986 , but I'm sure they will be an amazing pair when displayed together!

Availability

This figure and the matching Z3 flew quite under the radar when they were announced (I personally only found out after release that they existed). This figure can easily be found in stock at many second hand places for 1-2K yen. Consider adding her to your order if you're already shopping somewhere and like her design!

Conclusion

Can still be picked up for cheap, is easily available, is of very above average quality for a prize figure, is a lovely character design...there is really no reason why I wouldn't recommend her!

And to finish it!

I am currently still unboxing most of my collection after moving my figures, but here is how she is displayed right now:

Marshmallowpie (4 months ago) #51877463I've wanted the GSC figure of her for a while, but seeing actual user photos, the prize figure is a little better than I thought. And with the prize figure you can have both Z1 and Z3. The painting on the ship parts is a bit distracting for me, but the choice in base is pretty interesting.

I find her scaled figure to be a bit disappointing to be honest. I like it, but I don't know if I'll ever pick it up, especially because like you said, with the prize figures you can have Z1 and Z3 together.

The painting of the ship parts indeed needs a bit of an upgrade, so I hope to be up for that challenge once I feel more confident in my painting of figures. :) I'm actually already surprised to have found so much detail in the sculpt there!

victorviper (4 months ago) #51818638I don't know the character and so at first, I thought her face made her look a little like Lynette Bishop, but the similarity ends there.
The riser base is kind of interesting. It's the kind of thing that would be very useful when you start to get crowded shelves.

Her face does indeed look a bit like Lynette in the artwork! But I'm also very happy that it is a rather unique design from Humikane.

Yeah! It would have been nice though if SEGA provided an option to also have a flat base she could stand on, as the figure can't stand by itself. Anyhow, as someone with crowded shelves, I'm happy with the riser base!
