Amanchu! - Ooki Futaba (Flare)Amanchu! - Ooki Futaba (Flare)Review

Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review!

Apart from this review being picture-heavy (wooohooo, big surprise there ( ̄ω ̄;) ) it’s slightly NSFW due to the nature of the figure.

This time I will take a look at a figure that seems to have been largely overlooked (judging by the number of people owning her), thus I was able to get her fairly cheap. ITEM #397027 Ooki Futaba from Amanchu! brought to us by Flare. This figure is based on the cover illustration of the second volume of the manga View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/pics/figure/large/95048.jpg (which I haven’t read… but then again, the anime didn’t exactly inspire me to). Anyway, the figure drew my attention because of its very special look, but I’ll get to that now. Let’s start with the review. :3

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The box Futaba arrives in is completely made of plastic (something Flare sure does a lot) and adorned with bubbles and other ocean-like elements. The top even looks like the surface f the ocean, with a hole in it to gaze at the figure. Quite a nice move considering that a main theme of the anime is diving. On the front you can even find the title and subtitle from the manga cover to further the "illusion". As with most plastic boxes this one has a plastic inlay as well. This one only covers the back and has the sole picture of the figure on it (the cover illustration would've been nice too).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182813.jpeg
The blister or blisters to be precise are pretty much standard fare as you can see. The smaller one with withe hose is taped behind the one holding the figure.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Futaba comes in 4 parts: main body, base, fish (on that note: what kind of fish is this? it reminds me of a firefish but I'm not entirely sure) and her diving regulator with the hose.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182814.jpeg
Flare also included an instruction sheet in Japanese and while you could assemble her w/o it it does helps.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The fish (whatever kind it is) looks really good, the paint is clean and its nicely sculpted (especially the fins, though the seams on the lateral ones are quite noticeable) and I love the kind of derpy looking face~♡

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182817.jpeg
As you can see it attached to one of Futaba's hair strands via a peg and I strongly suggest doing the fish first, since the hose has to go around it.

The hose gets attached to hole in the tank, while the regulator has to be placed into Futaba's hand quite loosely (literally... it popped out of her hands quite a number of times while taking pictures...). Anyway, the regulator is very cute with the the heart-shaped decoration
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182818.jpeg

One thing that adds a lot to the impression of Futaba diving is the base, a piece of sandy ocean floor with starfishes and shells. Both sculpt and paint make it look quite realistic and are well-done. The light blue part where the figure attaches to the base could be a surge of bubbles created by her paddling with her feet. Whatever it is though it fits the overall aesthetic. Still be careful when you move the figure around, everything stays in place if you don't, but due to the figure's weight it easily detaches from the base on contact (a bit too easily if you ask me).

This figure looks stunning in my eyes, but let's address the tiny little elephant in the room now before we continue. Yes, she's shiny, very much so (something that probably reminds people more of bootlegs or certain 18+ figures), to create a wet look This makes sense since she is diving, but it might not be for everyone (definitely put me off at first too). My opinion on it changed completely though. Now I don't think it looks cheap at all. In fact, I don't think many manufacturers could pull this off as flaws would be enhanced by it.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Futaba's face is beautiful. I love her eyes in particular, yet I also have a bit of trouble describing her expression. It kind of looks like something caught her attention while she was adjusting the regulator (to me). Well, ok, I pushed the regulator out of the way so her face would be visible from different angles. x3
The mouth is sculpted in and her lips show a hint of gloss that still stands out from the overall shiny finish.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182852.jpeg
It's quite interesting to see how one of her eyes always seems smaller than the other depending on the angle, but ofc that's not the case. x3

While Futaba's hair is usually darker and way less purplish it's true to the illustration and looks fantastic. The gloss adds a great effect to it, the shading is really strong, and the sculpting is immaculate. I really have nothing to complain here, her twintails seem "floaty" enough to be under water I just wonder what she used to tie them.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Onto her body...
The shiny finish sure enhances the sculpt in places, the collarbone and chest look great (not that you'd normally look at this angle. x3
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182859.jpeg

Futaba's body is well defined altogether. The way her chest presses against the air cylinder instantly catches your eye. In contrast the white ribbon on her arm seems almost crude, but the way it softly digs into her skin is nice.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182862.jpeg
Her back looks great too "a beautiful back can also delight" was it? :3

To complement a beautiful body sculpt Futaba also has pretty and feminine hands with glossy painted fingernails. Still there's a small weld between the middle and ring finger of both hands. Nothing to complain about the regulator.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182873.jpeg

The air cylinder is certainly well-made, but the way it has "クウキ" (kuuki means "air) written on it made me think "well... duh...". x3
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182863.jpeg

The lower half of her body continues the nice body sculpt under her white swimsuit. Futaba's belly is nicely toned, you can even see signs of her ribcage.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182891.jpeg
Not to mentions some other... errr... "assets"... x3
Apart from the subtle folds in the swimsuit the pearlescent finish and the shading do a fantastic job of accentuating her curves. Only the seam line between the swimsuit and the legs is tad too conspicuous up close. Still the fabric digging into her skin looks quite good.

If there's one thing standing out due to glossy finish it's those seemingly never-ending legs. The finish really makes the details shine (yeah, that pun sucks...), her knees, the calves, those legs are plain gorgeous.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182897.jpeg

As far as I can tell the diving fins look fairly good, though the light blue color is a bit unusual. They're positively bending in the water and upon closer inspection the connection to the base looks decent as well.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182901.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Last but not least some size comparisons, though tbh that's a bit hard for this figure...
But first things first, Futaba reaches a height of roughly 23,5cm (measured from her heel to the top of her head). I guess she's somewhere between a 1/7 and a 1/6 scale, but I found no concrete body height for her character so this is just guesswork (Flare gave no scale for her either).

Ofc after arriving at that conclusion placing her next to a 1/8 scale seems a bit pointless, but ITEM #143923 fits so nicely theme-wise. (´ ▽`).。o♡
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182902.jpeg

1/7 figures like ITEM #645881 and ITEM #645454, don't look too out of place next to Futaba, but with her pose and height it's actually difficult to display them next to her. They're just bound to look much smaller.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182903.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182904.jpeg

In terms of size other Flare figures fare the best since some of them don't have a scale given either.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Since I don't have space in my Detolf left and struggle with finding a display case that fits Futaba's height w/o being grossly oversized I'm quite grateful that her box is made of plastic.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/03/30/2182908.jpeg
Might not be the most ideal solution, but I quite like it. :3

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Well, I had a few very small complaints but overall this figure is gorgeous and beautiful. I most definitely don't regret a single cent I spent on her. Honestly the more I look at her the more I love her. She's really special and unique in more ways than one and Flare did a fantastic job on her. For some reason she doesn't seem to be very popular, so a lot of shops still carry her for around retail (or less).

That's it for this review! Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it! ^^
If you don’t mind, I’d love some constructive criticism,
but if you don’t feel like posting any your thoughts on the figure are also very welcome. :3

Thank you so much for this review!

She has been on my "most-wanted" list for a while now, and I've just been focused on other figures until now. In my opinion, this is one of the most clever sculpts out there in regards to the presentation of a figure in an environment where she seems to be simply floating in midair. To think that the whole thing depends on the touching point of the flipper is fantastic!

Because of the pretty standard pricing across the board, I'm tempted to get her through Amazon (fastest shipping), but I don't always know if they would recognize a fake if they saw one -- depends on the third-party vendor working under the Amazon umbrella.

I DO wish that she wasn't as "glossy" as she seems to be. I really like figures that have a matte skin tone in contrast to other glossy elements, but perhaps they were reasoning that she's underwater, so her skin would be glossy. Who knows .. I'm not going to nitpick a gorgeous figure.

BTW, I think they're trying to represent a lionfish with the fish that's behind her. It usually comes in the same color patterns, and each of the "flying fins" has a spike within that is loaded with a venomous neuro-toxin. VERY dangerous fish, so it makes me feel that Ooki is a friend, otherwise they wouldn't be so close.

Maakie1 year ago#58273901Oh~ This is a very interesting figure to see reviewed! I only found out about her when I saw her discounted on a store and found out she was quite a recent release actually, which made me check her MFC page. :')
As most of the times with Flare the quality is top-notch. It's just a too unknown source material I guess that people hugely missed out on this figure. I personally quite like the shine, but I understand how it can be a bit off-putting. She looks quite nice displayed in her box!
By the way you seem to be buying a lot, I hope your wallet is OK. xD
Well, the series wasn't exactly popular if I remember correctly so it doesn't really come as a surprise that Futaba got overlooked (not every series can have a huge hype after all). I'm still glad they made her as she's a great figure with very great quality as well. I've become a fan of her shininess too and only then did I order her. x3
Ahahaha, well, my poor credit card (no worries it's a prepaid one, so unless I deposit some money I can't buy anything) is crying in a corner somewhere, but it works. :3

Looks really great! seems those worries about shadows obscuring her face were groundless. :3

I didn't even notice that about the tube, I thought about the possibility briefly but I didn't try it. x3

broken-Toybox1 year ago#55804952I'd love to see some pictures of your set-up once she arrives. :3
And there you go, Amazon.co.jp and DHL never cease to amaze!

Shadow stops just above her hairline so it's perfect, didn't even have to readjust the upper shelf.
I did fight with the mouthpiece for a few minutes before realizing that the tube could rotate though ^^;

Bah-Roo1 year ago#55823182Wow this is a really unique figure! Thanks for sharing - otherwise I never would have seen it. I rather like it, but also not sure I can handle the shiny XD
I think her hair sculpt should have been done a little differently - to give it the feel of flowing underwater. The comparison pic with Deep Sea Miku highlighted that for me; Miku's hair gives that vibe of being underwater a lot better.
My favourite thing about this figure is probably the flippers or the fish. Really pretty colours on the fish and nicely painted too!
I'll definitely be adding her to my list of figures I like.
It was the same for me initially, but it actually grew on me over time. :3
Maybe so, but it’s true to the artwork, so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it per se.
They are real highlights for sure, but for me it’s the combination of everything that makes the figure special (plus, I’m one of those who really need a figure to have a nice face).

broken-Toybox1 year ago#55804952A Flare figure based on one of the manga covers would be great (1 or 10) to go with Futaba.Agreed, the mangas and artbook have immense potential for great figures but Aquamarine and Phat went with the anime designs instead (because visibility I guess)
