2P Review (Maakie/victorviper) Kotobukiya 1/7 Mai Tokiha2P Review (Maakie/victorviper) Kotobukiya 1/7 Mai Tokiha

Today we'll be doing a figure review that's a little bit different, a "Two-Player" figure review in collaboration between MFC users Maakie and victorviper.

About this 2-player review collaboration:

victorviper:
A handful of MFC users have done "two-player" figure reviews in the past, notably Wayfinder WAYFINDER and Beani BEANI. It was always fun to read these, seeing two slightly different perspectives on the same figure, and when my MFC friend Maakie and I both happened to spontaneously post reviews of the same figure (ITEM #5600) within a day or two of one another, we discussed the possibility of doing a dual review of some figure common to both our collections.

Maakie:
We have so much similar taste in figures, that it was actually surprising that we didn't think of doing this sooner! I hope it can also spark some other users to set up something like this, as it's a lot of fun!

victorviper:
Yeah, it would definitely be interesting to see more people on MFC do this dort of thing, particularly since there's not as much blog activity as there was just a couple of years ago.

About the character and source material:

Today, we'll be reviewing an old Kotobukiya figure ITEM #1237 of Mai Tokiha ENTRY #3263, who is the main character from the Mai-Hime ENTRY #186 anime and manga. Mai is a student at the prestigious Fuuka Academy, and she serves as guardian to her perpetually sickly brother Takumi of whom she is extremely protective. Upon her arrival at Fuka Academy, Mai learns that she is able to control a Child; Children are typically a hybrid of a mythological creature and a mecha and can only be controlled by those marked with a particular symbol (the HiME symbol). The apparent purpose of the Children is to battle the Orphans (monsters), but Mai and her other HiME friends soon realize that Fuka Academy holds a number of secrets and that they must decide who is a friend and who is a foe...

Thoughts about the source material:

victorviper:
Mai-Hime is a nostalgic anime for me. It came out in the mid 2000's and it promptly found its way onto DVD in the United States. A number of people online recommended the show, so I decided to check it out. I found that it had an interesting combination of action, humor, attractive character designs and fanservice together with a story that had enough twists and turns to be interesting. I also like anime that have shades of darkness beneath a fluffier exterior, and if you've seen the show, you probably know that HiME is such an anime.

Maakie:
Mai-Hime was also one of the series that got easily available here during the same time. Not long before that it could be a real struggle to get video or DVD's from anime series, but when Mai-Hime came out it was quite a boom here! This also meant for me to give it a watch and similar to victorviper, I was pulled into the combination of genres, there even is a bit of yuri in there! Let's also not forget the amazing soundtrack the series had, I still regularly listen to it.

victorviper:
It's interesting you mention that. While the show itself and the characters are pretty memorable, the soundtrack hadn't really stuck with me too much; I had to go grab one of my DVD's off the shelf to remember what the theme songs sounded like.

Maakie:
Let me grab this moment to share my favorite song from the series with you and the other MFC readers:

And let's get going with this review!

How/when/where we got this figure:

Maakie:
That earlier mentioned 'boom' of the Mai-Hime series also meant that local stores started to stock up from merchandise from this series. I picked up this Mai at a local convention in my country around 2007/2008 I think. I've had her on display after getting her and moved house with her 3 times now, so this figure has been quite through a lot! More recently, she had been boxed up since my last move 3 years ago, so opening her again to make pictures for this review was also a test to see how she had held up.

victorviper:
I'd thought about getting this figure a number of times, since Mai-Hime holds some nostalgia value, it's relatively common, and it can be found at a very reasonable price. Ultimately, when Maakie and I decided to do this 2-player review, we looked for common figures in our collections and despite the fact we have a lot of common interests, we didn't have that many figures in common. Plus, of the ones we did have in common, at least one of us had already reviewed most of them! However, I noticed that Maakie had this figure, and a quick internet search revealed that one of my favorite US shops just happened to have one brand new sitting around collecting dust. Since they were selling her for only $29, I figured that was a sign that I should finally get this figure :).

Packaging

victorviper:
The package is pretty simple. I do like how the I's in Mai's name are written in the same style as the I's in the HiME logo. Also, since I got a good deal on this figure, and it was released 13 years ago, I expected the box to be dusty and banged up, but it was pretty much in mint condition!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427005.jpeg

Maakie:
It's similar with mine! Even after all those moves and being put in different storages, my box only has a few spots with paint missing, but nothing else!

victorviper:
Note the price on the back of the box near the UPC code - 3800 yen for a new figure! Those were the days :).

Maakie:
For sure! The back of the box also has a small Sunrise-sticker for copyright. There are some bootlegs out there of this figure and their box might be missing this marking.

victorviper:
I didn't realize there were bootlegs of this figure. *Looks at MFC page* Yep, sure enough.

Maakie:
That bootleg is quite a lot...less good looking. It's from the time back when most bootlegs were very shiny plastic.

I also really like the inside of the box with the fire-pattern, very fitting for Mai!

victorviper: Her elemental affinity is fire, after all.

Maakie: This figure was released in the time were a lot of manufacturers were still experimenting with the blisters of their figures (and a lot of them came with those dreadful wires!). Mai has an interesting front blister that clicks into the back blister.

Posing

victorviper:
I like her very confident and assertive body language!

Maakie:
For sure! Her face looks almost like she's teasing you a bit!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gIOkZvsQpyzhxAbBHL-PG0GkX7s_B3E-WpIOXzo0dCglt8iCGuBrkWaSOiVprxnUkIb2RSwlP7aJaF4MUYo3tMleUvHn4gdVnZA0U0hpcprTtZeOT3fFpv0Tecm6wDn6ZT5H3ixoVVRLFWxXv4A-BrbRwweJKs2AC_TyHX4XeTx0BNK0ElVOi5oTAddpmk-89CLwqHQct4h8qZ6FcdQVGolhqyYivP1PutqH5YZ9nFYniLSwDPvUYNwTN0_Yualw4kkUPRTGvQTxjbve0qswVOZWAkGUBsrXu5nK-xbU3xfVGKXupqU98MoBTalbV-aPdFBOFNN6BT8q6s84pMaqiXsyuibBkjhQ7lz8KlltMVZ_1hH-FK2jSKlbYp9UtHjt49HkMYqo_FfYPhfwGmqe6bGaqOZICmlIM36VCpXabDmTOnNYs8Pa9dAVFjOZg_52VRR6sLaS5pKXLwipbLP-L8_8cMdz0FPIxHEoHfUemhmyn5uQ3SVhaQ2d732cohJFOU5gVh1Ciz8_vMS3c2olCVPAzw5PyEfgmvav8TjAfPo-G9ENafzcJb-vq0xrtgrHxRfbacs8QiVtmeUoXpP3OCCsDkq82Djs0XOOuKgZJ3TIoXgfY-h-WtPL-xkvbgx1fAdL6Qs142AbARLaF0yH1eSUMr1Mx6s=w757-h966-no?.jpg

victorviper:
One thing about Mai's pose is that the way the scarf is positioned, it makes her look a little awkward in profile like this.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427019.jpeg

Maakie:
That's true, but luckily she also has a lot of good angles. Personally I really like her look from
the back. The movement of the skirt also makes it seem like she just did a big hip movement.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gn5UYVCV6wlosIC3x1RzVuhXsqBpUP5VCzZb-0WXtTBDg8-185VhUuzEtxKcpbBaJYIImYy9wACpJRNDl3WrRmq1TJ9xLLCuRHV32ziIdZaJFhDzemGY4V7g6CkvocGlYiyTGP6ikmNrySGjbDNaqx8cXHbXuq8EQb8qI7Vs5dNPGNIUh29jhgK8TUULG-kPBuDCo8R6ZTWttp2jTRm5JY_Pm9kvobZoJpDi288s7g2k7wNttrSpz7w8BC5SQ6v_m_7zCsBg_65TwvMrlF9vYGtBIx_GwDrKCWWiH9FoQG3o2YLtorn6K0DNDjDa86IFVFHuRQQzgPq9syriJ8fyaq4ohDDJ_kaLt2xDNd-9QrV6tRNwMlPbIVqn5R-FD451BEjRd0nqU4vHhhyCZRCNIRZ9OTTIZQEnqXYivrczBXpNA2X_45TV7OyVBMAAAI5lbkfW9onZqFMX9g9QJRpmiNnQwyDemBieyP2nAQukT8dxu3aZzJwa4lhT7SyTuGAGlCdx_7ASzuf49n5LdCecs4Rzv39VaXlRv5xEDgxNcthud1kEN_9vw6g_Veyf0v_XyP4I5hW99fOoJUSV_izabrkUTZbPWba0LlF2-0pDKGT1yMgtBG9iwR3OQoVRx9xuJdxLLlO0g5VZ36OTpdnfdLxMjLgZ-H0=w904-h966-no?.jpg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427021.jpeg

Maakie:
Seeing both of our Mai's from the back is a bit weird, though. It might be the angle, but it seems like your Mai has a slight lean right out of the box?

victorviper:
I didn't even notice that until comparing our photos. I see that Mai can be a leaner, so I might have to watch out for that.

Maakie:
I don't think there's much you can do about it. If she's correctly attached to her feet pegs and displayed under normal conditions...just pray nothing will happen!

Sculpt and Paint

victorviper:
Kotobukiya did a pretty good job duplicating the source artwork into figure form.
It does occur to me that while the source artwork is from the anime, Mai's appearance falls somewhere between her anime and manga selves. Anime Mai's shirt is a yellowish-orange color, while manga Mai's shirt is more of a brownish gold, and this figure makes her shirt color somewhere in the middle.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427023.jpeg

Maakie:
Interesting to point out about that, is that the anime was released before this figure and the manga only after. So maybe they took some inspiration from the manga designs that were already getting made?

Maakie:
I really like what a stunning color purple her eyes are!

victorviper:
Definitely. Her eyes really stand out.

Maakie:
Might be one of my favorite parts of this figure because of the very different color palette from the rest!

victorviper:
Anime Mai has orange hair, while manga Mai has brown hair, and Koto gives her hair an orange-to-brown color gradient. I like the messy and tousled look of her hair!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427026.jpeg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/sLfYjdsLarG1RG8E0BwijjP45zvMivldkdeQfGK3SRMmIfxY3N53Epv7Pjzf1vWPid55dXngVlZQ4i1mgiKNyqJvEOVM6Ru1odBv82sTwbVAHumnvbCAGLvhWZYVkHMp2fjVJ2PafEK_mdz1_AZqi8SqxYP-5FZF6jCkcxTSR3Ur0NatXR3c1Rj-kKiTXmlOoYhnK_LSAJnCXOmN3OQGxa4zBg7ucWNY3js_Q4oUxCDAihKymod4X-SQZAK6PN0fnAAuAhbF1F8X_7VQr54JoI0W7c-0UG2wjNP1UWvQZMmvQAQGZosO_bAv4r4Ub6t0FJs1dSvch95uTPNcVMzRPQ7P9UqafEUYlcc2jji4eM02PhBHwTSJ9l059B0foGTlsSsaiGOk4BExlMya2Xqf7y9XhyHMC_CPq5bZ8LNeMUJ-6ibShXJjmb_6YaNMgKNJVAItRECuJBusrE_OR6EA0-jC9vRrqkj2KXSHYhswKUzSJM8KEE6o83aRAgSn77g1ygp3mhpoYc_pcmAsKgUFkMD5vwMcvEIHjrcbENqYNwMJk0zz58QUn2dYgevD3TryqEzESlUFuUYIYuA2xED2hxrfmoOeH1_unHWnGQ1C2yN_VeTcSRnMrzq2N24NoO4C2NbuzcJHkIkMzR5nHmRkd1J64uvVLrk=w1288-h966-no?.jpg

Maakie:
Although I like the messy look and color gradient, the quality of the hair sculpt is a bit so-so.

victorviper:
The tips of her hair are definitely quite clumpy.

Maakie:
When it comes to the hair, I really like this detail, With a bit of hair tucked away in her hairdo.

victorviper:
I like the very pronounced ahoge, too.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/p9SV7STvuk4IT-xaC6tbaue0i7UJa-PZN8vUxeLZgyEzFQr4iC_KFSvdXRfqB88LHDODX_dDLp5o5fj0pjViDYpFAFuTqJY_jVgJdA2S7lKP5S5lIZ96Cr1ejcN6SDcYNIQQYxwIsks1O9kDTKpZASUto09hNrge3ndYtAL9mEwNmQIWzlGUQo01IbgMZd1LssbHq7Ha2wD7i-9vWPo4xb--dSNE7alm6L--Fs6LixxDqp8QTE_tHeIjC2Ph09B8qdOLMrqcUdMI5jnm7u8j80YYX_Mfv27nrJaSXXYBowy6bqn_fki2xC3GYbDhMDiklGNVwWXetrgP1S19L6PwkvRw5zKyubqWgWHZKHG7Fv7x-7xnCBWRDIDgCJNOGUMf2oZ-uLMZfiz0UD2Y6jTc6SfQoDdEWmMVAqW0LFWM2mKGTwZfmcsoEJOLU_LZD9YM5fEvzQjM7DBFoGYHvDIPZHxfZD4lNSON21V_T9KlDF-s9Xq9v0_R9aBMNYON78fhLmxyOQxrBM5jNMeBIlcp5XWZUShUcdq0HQ8iMzMS2f42t-7Jd31XbxnJEBIQN718YFLp9Bfxl5Tv412oO9xnzNZC7NGOJ9D66o7ayGt4lDIHQYVIMp09FHVLJ61X9Dejv6AUGYdxGsW6yg2aOHSSfR1BgBAtlUA=w725-h966-no?.jpg

victorviper:
Maybe it's just me, but her hands seem a little out of proportion with the rest of her body. The orange coloring on her fingers also looks kind of weird...

Maakie:
I'm not even sugarcoating it: Her hands are huge! The shading on her hands is a bit...experimental...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427028.jpeg

Maakie:
I do like the effort in the shading, though! I mean, on a lot of figures around this age, there is barely any shading to be found at all.

victorviper:
Mai's large breast size is something of a running joke in the show, and so Koto plays up this feature the way Mai is sort of arching her back and sticking out her chest. Unfortunately, the painting on the various seams of her outfit is pretty messy, more like the kind of thing that you'd see on a prize figure these days.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427030.jpeg

Maakie:
Ah, yikes! Yours has quite some messy lines on the side. Mine looks better from the side, but the front however...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/NFWYGCoNhBNebcWg493DeNxVipQjYt3efQyAz-obzaS4LQkP-hBqTz5v1iBCxsstok7g2VG1RjxH0gdswm35B7M-e5jP2VDCJb7_qjpYpA7CvWJbBXY1y6NksRcrZJu5oRG0rEAHNSEushZJq0v06EtUJzAoLJNJ_OopIi5vky6Lycr0pGL4VIVTxxCmMcEQFe2FURtvkC6ctGq_a99QiA2nFcTL1MmoSFRB9g_atB2SXLhq0fsgVi9drQ4TV7UzkmrqBlBEUXZd7Eb28ZVMiyreK7nbOS1LcmnOZ2yR2n6toGbg4LPf6YAE0sRY9aNrHJg7O77nZOoNj4sCTtzECUBFf1ugxr0Dwprm_urjkZsSaTzG-rt6y8bFbNIQrIP_wmOZx-4oDirCs4KBXVfCKZqDLMUYoQp5l01ur9eginQUFck6PR4Ccl8ehNflP-Z5bjTc4NJONMYFC_-AYuXry1LxJ9emEZlll2-S4qAnXgP0hWpVbpkhelrb0O9DwBBG4rFH42pIKHmBNCRfDXEhqPvSWyDVzrXrGuu83KnolBfGkZSnl3n65pmcr-Hos9-I6VjvjBWgfM-4XwGmgZ3AopYuibOeuE8QRsGUVpXjKkUU_rQLZYDb-3C_WQctAOU07hLJBPK7QdHA3XKmfmITP0q-S-VXb1k=w725-h966-no?.jpg

Maakie:
The back of mine has better brown lines and I like the overall shading here. I guess this just confirms how quality control was of a very different level back then.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nL5yKIxsY02dSUX8weNibQTySBr5LH_-Uh-xltHCET-uv8cCo6iPnz84tATj2om5jttINXIrTcoe3at1pJ2aNfhV-IE0PE7dRqIXyekOahi3Fpgu-6v3GSNfYclJ68ZhPrrwiuZ4Ox14IFP6dvYJPdJF2PV319vOy3690ZB7uHo8sRoFUBAXBajD2Ieul32HKMoPOqGWrJdAtpBvGdGBWE84JpSSeooeXvgDlkiyWrkwIE5wUVRGn5bPklIgai8VTC4i-UA5S-aYHU9l8P0UarPU2KxQpxnbfk1imayVdN7Z9SiOhMzA1nRMsm21bNpCwgjKL39SoCSBcSfgS_4ZsXuqLwyqHCwO5AuxBkYOInUkDTg8WTsq8LPEb1s77viq_I3DgOjo2Nej1M1VIzFjuX-HlWcd1GcxAHii8-S2NZAypNGzMd3YaUfCzRGin_xVMbw8p30AJ1AXJ9l4VVk0XKzF5crpnJ1mSXYy2WbMfBSo06pAdyJGTZ8ujAjugyTyMzncM1UKNpcVVIC9p73D-6aw5QiiI2Y4YOf8NiKloaicLJqNfqRTzh78awDPRA6Bsu1_o2YQCAeZf0yiL8gPtUfExDNPgXlx-Zz5UHgaCd77B_ztjuwpokyNfMuA6hwycZSBBvGqjuLstVNfdfqMpvbhaDIhf3c=w725-h966-no?.jpg

victorviper:
It always kind of surprises me how two copies of the same figure can have such a variance in overall quality!

Maakie:
This kind of stuff still happens, but general quality control back then was a lot less...extensive.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2Dg6S9Jhm-9t4YM59XrYbTjLuv8wNLV7QGsSV-T3KV56o4FZH-G0EOTJ6VHgdVAkOnSxs7k7HS5me2hJri2gUX0UbBTPm1qU4cbX59BilrKrAPfwXS-4IDac1viR3ttR7bz2B9yow8Q6J9sKGm_v86Negy3Z9tlb4bGcoTnUsUbvpFPx4nlfXsZVHgvup3ZrFEfktXUNzrxAfx5GfUIL2oBxdOmWV_WIhTNp2ditSoJ1isHE4ZFZyzXfCy47KeKtCtleq10e32bhmfzE9BS_PrgZrhOJ8vA2nv0zySZyhmhntpG3i80ZzZP7RnGod44gBta-jail29x0Dj-NiMT7Z5VSG3dYSG5WlgwfzMeq2iF9leW57EgKPtz1aNIhjJF51biEzL2klW93bUC2vh7nfAvz4Eep2QpW3UH_ur8Z1r4zF2JjwFF4Ir13_Q2kIwi5Sy6XylB9tWRnk4RHFtoDlXGxXJwzEP8A940DUNNPMRGpPjvg9feYv3htRk--LPyPmYIz13OqUNzpyYJ4tx_bMcFgiy38UES0CZlXQ9TdfJiUFg-dXpD5I3jwbn70bkdzBuP2fUwBz6592U5kbOVGFjv7AgcoKIiVzQTxWbKC6mgls0agifrQXwK46Npcng0S4prnoyC_hkVAA5Lr-Zvex11EVQiYy7Q=w1288-h966-no?.jpg

Maakie:
Her scarf has quite some movement going on, which is interesting but there are some visible seamlines on my copy where parts have been joined.

victorviper:
I didn't even notice that. The ends on the scarf are kind of messy, too.

Maakie:
Oh wow, on my copy this looks a lot better! I like how the tassels look like they are made of a different material than the rest of the scarf. My copy however, is missing the high amount of shading yours has on the scarf itself!

victorviper:
The shading could just be because of the lighting. Some of my shots came out a little green (the color of her outfit maybe?), so I had to do a little color correction on some of them. That could also exaggerate the look of the shading.

Maakie:
Your comment intrigued me, so I decided to blow up the colors of mine in Photoshop, but I could not achieve similar results. I guess it will remain a mystery for a bit more!

Maakie:
As I earlier also shortly mentioned, I really like the movement in the skirt. The shading is also nicely done. There are some errors though, mainly in the paint. Seems like some dust and dirt got on her in the painting process.

victorviper:
I think I spy a hair that got painted over on her skirt, too :).

Maakie:
Jup...it's something you can't unsee once you've seen it. It's something that's happened a lot more to me while reviewing, with my camera picking up details my eyes wouldn't!

victorviper:
On my figure, her skirt had a little chunk missing, and you can see a very obvious mold line on her leg. In fairness, however, these sorts of flaws were pretty common back in the mid 2000's. It makes you appreciate how the overall quality of figures is a lot better these days! Of course, the prices have also increased correspondingly...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427034.jpeg

Maakie: Oh wow, mine has nothing like that! Legs are completely smooth.

victorviper:
There's that huge variance between copies of the same figure showing up again.

Maakie:
I guess we can't really complain with it's 3800 yen release price, right? ;) The downsides of such cheap prices!

victorviper:
The short skirt allows an easy pantsu shot, and there's a fair amount of detail there.

Maakie:
Don't you think the huge crease in the middle is a bit...awkward?

victorviper:
She is twisting her torso a little bit, so maybe they'd be bunching up like that.

Maakie:
The front of her panties are a bit basic and don't have as much fanservice as the back.

Maakie:
I do like how there is so minimal light-blue shading in the panty. I will never forget the whole episode about stolen panties in this series, haha!

victorviper:
That's episode 7 (Lost Kittens), right?

Maakie:
I actually meant episode 4 (Mischief of the Wind), won't ever forget Natsuki at the end of the episode there, haha! I can't remember episode 7 that well even after reading a quick synopsis, seems like it's time for me to rewatch the series!

victorviper:
I remember that episode, but I couldn't remember exactly which episode it was. My Wikipedia episode list search failed me :).

victorviper:
There was more detail on Mai's shoes than expected! The sculpted trim and the detail on the tongues of the shoes is a nice feature.

Maakie:
It's pretty funny how the part I also most appreciated were the shoes! Kotobukiya made quite a lot of school girls in uniform back then (all those To Heart (2) girls!), so I think they perfected how these kind of shoes should look!

victorviper:
That's kind of funny :)

Scale Comparison

victorviper:
Mai is established to be 5'2" (157 cm) tall, and this figure stands approximately 7.75 inches (19.7 cm) in height, so that would make her much closer to 1/8 scale as opposed to the listed 1/7. I've noticed a lot of older figures tend to be a little shall we say generous like this when estimating the scale of the figure...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/K_v37kgtHNMDrM8-MV7D8X_pKwSyA0pXdoIXB4A9TWNciasMWinTfj0d6v5B676P-imTuyvVXoVVkUve37B2AApGLXu6b2lIzZhwWeEJK7L-4dlsKSV_JXTpte0zUxqCPJI_qffkmRh8KVYyLgLl52MABmnta0fmt0Hl8XNE_NQc0AncmbvFah9h_2nczRtlpO-13goywUkDc4FGW8SH68Mb_SQ3SgyVrIX8qUjSOgN76db3qUNLTtQwRP_-KUz8x731TKqTwKpXptOVpw5udrSgyemWVB95X1Nd161oKtEV0JJ5NzFtef6gyDXc1QqDh4AaFYpvz5kFypYQ_eeLOHnHas7NM3o3UKZ-YctvImq1JfNBt864A9WHufqC8fodkpM1i_OYSY-QvPkAogqc1QD1ozzhRGF6W9zzkuyB4gZOvIDHFzlWiWA7CfuMt10yol6RkT3bc_YBh3BreDeE40K4dHZK_dK9l2grzS8bElRmTULXYj7oDJtBFOVcjSYorMN1aDPo3P4WJnKDjt9VcTjlWaKkAULmj4VRqUP0UixGkZHT7siMMvQtTn_w4zjXiFGjgdXDCm7CXMiIG47CvmgO_YA9bo_F4aZ2CNNBCpvNvKltvI75k7eWitbxusQsS16TlLf3KWAAt7pXA0oSNgHZtExKe1c=w725-h966-no?.jpg

Maakie:
For sure, here we see a comparison of multiple of my Mai's: The biggest one in the back is Max Factory's 1/6 ITEM #112 , who should have been also bigger for a 1/6. The tiny beach figures ITEM #938 are listed as 1/10, but are more like 1/12.

victorviper:
You can also see that the Max Factory Mai looks more like anime Mai, and the Koto figure has a little bit of anime Mai and a little of manga Mai. I would so get ITEM #938 if those figures weren't so tiny!

Maakie:
It's still interesting how this Mai has such a similar look to the manga, although the manga was not released yet! And regarding those beach figures...even if they weren't so tiny, they should have really been made sturdier. I have trading figures holding up better. :/

victorviper:
These two are surprisingly similar in overall appearance, and the scarf is a key feature of both figures. Alter's muse of Range Murata ITEM #186018 is 1/6 scale, and you can see how Mai compares.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427040.jpeg

victorviper:
I guess all figure collectors have their own little moe quirks, and mine might be scarves :). Taito's ITEM #222557 Super Pochaco is about 1/8 scale, and since Pochaco is leaning over, you can see that she and Mai are quite similar in scale, but Mai is just marginally bigger.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427046.jpeg

Maakie:
Heh, I never realized that with the scarves! It made me check my own collection, but I only have two others with scarves: ITEM #235705 and ITEM #99028 . Speaking about that last one, that is another girl with a scarf that will enter your collection soon! :)

victorviper:
My scarf subcollection also includes ITEM #604642, ITEM #96900, ITEM #61722, and these ITEM #195473 ITEM #676037 are on my wishlist. I might have a problem :)

Maakie:
Oh wow, now I'm going to check my collection and see if I have a 'secret' recurring subject there too! Hrmm, I might have a 'problem' with a lot of blond characters, although I don't even specifically have that as a favorite hair color! Also characters that have ribbons in their hair and/or clothing, yeah okay, I'll admit to that one, haha!

victorviper:
Sometimes what old figures lack in quality, they make up for in nostalgia, particularly when in regard to anime franchises that don't keep getting new merchandise year after year (which is most anime franchises!). Misuzu Kamio ITEM #17 is another old Koto figure that for me has a high nostalgia factor, and Misuzu is one of my favorite figures despite her so-so quality. Misuzu is 1/8 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1554427051.jpeg

Maakie:
That Misuzu is so nostalgic! As for me, my HiME/Otome collection used to be mainly big figures from HiME and smaller from Otome. Here is a picture from when I last had them on display:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9Y6y1ABPDl4pxnGbNP_WB50CTgvRxueeRsTTPrXaEtV9jSEya0MHXbUhkTdooBMxqeexfMYBMz7ri1ObBph9b7m9dv2nEaw1CfgXz0tSvwZLo2DKcuQqIYDDoPSaMys_cJgLdC8K0zxuT4pq3iXLR6mtbcIOdRDqlAHNUwZUK3yybv12d9MoELQOygBOTLV8edgmSkct0gd3Na4osC6ERHed6Z5k8xoi0NpHYqVB7SMzHK0DkJ4n-sM9KAB6X8Ng0b4w-TmTotKWzntuvseyLt-200zU6kSYGHypY64lxxeVTkR-C-Mv5xpUsGIwZxKq6d4TM7K1eQKL-poGO4SJJQLg9KxBUfyoONp9UHn4KXQ-eNEcGbMYySU0kp8Ycb2w_zFr3ZDcEJ--yVI1KyITRoGex1ybl3loOkEh_27NIYEFsr2XibWWSwkz48rwOwzOU8NWiuNpJ40HmiBnWLoHlkdgInFqr4_hGgMGYKdPkRZH7TyTH94UhaAXPhaFJ79a4YRGo5cgCyO0Dd2fKNvDF7qgEP-dVOmbcYwY3BiFamYrU9PtnOMDYcWG-LO7OwFIfiuUksdaND2gNkak6BscqzySD1FWC4ybR0EnJ_N4-nOdkSRPHfN3V5MwMTACsyKfolLUAeNAEVPCs18tTpASQQfKMSF0aUk=w1288-h966-no?.jpg

Maakie:
I had been thinking about only keeping the Otome ones, but doing this review has really highered my feelings for this figure again! Compared to the other 'bigger' Mai's out there, I can also say that she is definitely of better quality than the earlier mentioned example of the Max Factory one. Which is interesting as nowadays people see Max Factory as a better manufacturer than Kotobukiya.

victorviper:
That's an interesting observation about the Koto Mai versus the Max Factory one. I've also got some Mai-Otome trading figures (ITEM #5531 and the rest of that set), but I boxed them up and put them away a long time ago. It's so hard to display tiny little trading figures.

Maakie:
Ah, but the ones made from Mai Otome are so neat! Although I am personally also still up to the challenge of how to display multiple of my own trading figure sets. I think I might go for some staircase-like solutions as I did with PICTURE #409291 in the past.

Overall verdict and enjoyment

Maakie:
You know, we have our complaints about this figure, but considering the release date I think this figure was definitely above average back then.

victorviper:
I'd agree with that assessment. Even some Alter figures of similar age show a lot more flaws than does Mai.

Maakie:
I have a bit of a hard time putting a score on her, but purely about the figure I would put a 7. This becomes a 7.5 because of my nostalgia factor and in my opinion she is probably the best Mai out there!

victorviper:
That sounds about right. Plus, Mai Hime came out at an interesting time. Around then, mass produced PVC figures were just beginning to overtake garage kits as the preferred medium, but things hadn't gotten to the point (like today) where popular series would just get tons of figures.

From the looks of it, this Mai could be the best of the bunch, but I've always been tempted to get this ITEM #1236 one. It's pretty inexpensive these days, and it looks like it was one of Griffon's better offerings.

Maakie:
Wait, if we're also going to talk about garage kits, then ITEM #72503 is for sure the ultimate Mai! I would love to get my hands on that one someday!

Griffon is such a mixed bag with quality. Based on user pictures I would say her shading looks quite flat, but her sculpt is definitely interesting. You should review her if you end up getting her someday! :)

Availability (as of this writing)

Fairly common.

Maakie:
People seem to sell her regularly and she also comes up on Japanese websites quite a lot, even a lot of times unopened! Her selling price seems to be about 3K yen in Japan and people locally around me are selling her for prices of 35-45 euros ($40-50).

victorviper:
I was surprised to see that 117 people on MFC own this figure!

Maakie:
You expected this to be higher or lower? :)

victorviper:
Lower.

Maakie:
Mai HiME really was a huge hit about 15 years ago, so I wouldn't be surprised if a lot more people used to own her and have sold her again.

victorviper:
I was also wondering how many of the people that bought this figure 13 years ago are no longer active on MFC, have gotten out of the figure collecting hobby, etc.

Maakie:
Talking about selling this figure, I think it's good to mention that this figure used to be the 'mascot' of the leaners club CLUB #230 for a long time. A lot of people used to have issues with this figure. I'm glad both of us seem to be spared of this fate (for now?). With you getting the figure sealed after all those years, I think people can also be confident buying sealed copies.

victorviper:
I didn't realize she had a reputation as being a leaner until you mentioned that and I noticed the little bit of a lean when comparing photos earlier.

Conslusion

victorviper:
This "two player" review was a lot of fun to do. It's was interesting to revisit an old popular show like Mai-Hime, and it was also interesting to see all the little differences in finish between the two copies of this figure!

Maakie:
It ended up being a good choice that we picked such an older figure, as quality was a lot more different on each figure back then. I'll be keeping an eye out when I buy new figures that would also be to your liking or in your collection to see if we can do something like this in the future again! I'm pretty sure you would be interested in any of these girls ITEM #396977 / ITEM #323987 / ITEM #323988 one day as well, right? :)

victorviper:
I like the Erica and Shirley figures, and I didn't get them when they were released since I thought that would commit me to getting *all* the SW girls in bunny form. However, it looks Aquamarine is pretty much done with that line, and so I might pick up either Erica or Shirley over the summer (I don't have much pre-ordered between May and September).

victorviper:
So, it looks like that brings us to the end of this 2 player figure review. I hope people enjoyed reading it!

CaptainZ (1 month ago) #56639169Yes, back when Koto made figures for a reasonable cost/quality ratio

In fairness, I don't think Koto has gone quite as price-crazy as some of the other manufacturers. Well, except for maybe ITEM #333165 ...

Heldrik (1 month ago) #56665598If only Kotobukiya was the only culprit...
Anyway, kudos to both of you, Maakie and victorviper, for this awesome dialogue-review of a figure that is really special to me. It was a pleasure reading it, and I hope you'll do it again sometime. You rock, period.

Thanks for the nice comment. It was fun to do this 2-person review, and I hope maybe others on MFC might be inspired to do something similar. The blog section gets rather sparse from time to time, and so anything that might spur more blog activity is a positive in my eyes.

Maakie (1 month ago) #56708524Glad to hear you enjoyed it so much! As a fellow owner of this figure, do you have similar or different defects as we noticed? And any leaning issues?
Truth be told, I never really fully inspected her, but I always noticed little white spots on her right shoe and a small paint defect on the white part of her jacket on the right side.

As for leaning, it's hard to tell precisely... I'd say she looks like she is leaning (supported by a fellow figure fan that told me so), but I think it's still acceptable. And if it really annoys me, I can always try one of the solutions I learned her on MFC.

Anyway, kudos to both of you, Maakie and victorviper, for this awesome dialogue-review of a figure that is really special to me. It was a pleasure reading it, and I hope you'll do it again sometime. You rock, period.

Nice to see this review up! :) Although it's an older figure, I hope people will enjoy this 2P write-up and I hope for more to come! :) For the people interested, I'm uploading my high resolution pictures made for this review right after this message. :)

About this blog

Welcome to my blog.

Most of my articles are figure reviews, with the occasional loot post thrown in.

Hopefully you'll find the reviews informational if you're considering the purchase of a particular figure.

I like to do a mix of reviews of both old and new figures, so if there's some figure in my collection that you'd like to see reviewed, leave a comment.
