Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - Giant Crab Creatures ArchiveFinal Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - Giant Crab Creatures Archive

! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be doing a mini review on a high quality trading figure, as I spend quite some time recently on the 2P review with VICTORVIPER (to be seen here: BLOG #42448 ) and my preparations for my earlier promised Rocket Booster Sanya ITEM #99028 review are taking a bit longer than expected, it's such a complicated figure! So today I will be talking about a figure of the Giant Crab ENTRY #11958 from Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles ENTRY #819 ! This figure ITEM #11918 is made by Square Enix ENTRY #7627 . Square Enix gets quite a lot of attention for the varying quality and high prices of their bigger figures, but their trading figures (like the one that is going to be reviewed here) are known for having better price-quality ratio.

Background

The original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for the GameCube is in my opinion the best installment in the Final Fantasy franchise. It's a spin-off with very different gameplay than the main games. It's a top-down real-time action game, in which you select a character from one tribe (you can choose between Clavat, Selkie, Yuke and Lilty) and set out on an adventure. The reason for this adventure, is that a poisonous gas called Miasma is active in this world. The only protection of this gas is to be near a special protection crystal. This crystal needs three drops of Myrrh to be fully working for a year, and that's where your character comes in. You are the collector of the Myrrh for your settlement. Myrrh comes from special trees that are protected by monsters (the boss fights in this game).

The Giant Crab is the first boss fight in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and guards the Myrrh Tree in River Belle Path. The boss fight comes with multiple phases and I was positively surprised that both looks this monster has can be build with this trading figure! Phase one includes a lot of slashing and smashing attacks, phase two is without the outer carapace and the later phases have more status effect attacks.

The reason why and how I got it

As a huge fan of Crystal Chronicles, I like to collect the items that are out there from this game. It took me a while to find one of these for sale, but I'm very happy to have picked up this figure!

All of the details have been nicely recreated on the figure, including the weapons stuck in the enemy by earlier adventurers and most of the original coloring is recreated.

The Box

I bought my copy of this figure without a box, which is pretty common for (older) second hand figures. I did look up a picture online of how the box was supposed to look:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ZQSin8gTwPGoLk71L2_CP2Ryl5MMg77D_gV8u_fW1i_Hv2PZDmFvhX8YKntL3tfWue8lBJjpqT01GI1CLpXURnFbsjiHSUH7nrbY6KyGP-hDU_Cmb2eYaRq_y1tV31Ze43Ed9TLwvs8zjj06Rh8BLBERkhxHthOjtFE4rWZayJ3JxkkQ5qOtWNpTrY0rLpKUOHyRZTdF9sMG21G4-OVL3gxUf_pHTqJmt_VouvhKxFkD_6YqvdN3wuHW9kVYi4bTmn8AlcMhwuK939YFObP8TRm3rs4ouzAwnvFMpJyPct_Jq0saJFs5AuOjGn0X65nPkEMEjg2yB4cX04bYEG2nDndfBysNCsascDw5rj2vve_9Hu5iP0DvU8rHYdIT4MjtEix0XgNV2W1IP_1qxYgcu8zvFJ0E2WHnWDXdNXZY8AfFAyfE7C2bpatiT-w4dW7px2UmIzndqNFaon9T-CymZFoPva0M2Q_nQCh2dIbkOrcw26nKM-B0aoFmLC_VmHS8l26Z7CkNNmyv5f0A9Lm796j--JSWErJWaeKv39vEzTX6UsZaGiH6z4SGvMn1jdGl14lURCz4tUp6Px-egE1umBFjeGNGtFmX1XtA0LpQPaOuXEyPTa-pXtFTCWgQckoa3LkWbOUAVSFzjbQmOxpi9_3GvP4Jrzw=w400-h310-no?.jpg

And it seems like a pretty generic trading figure box.

The figure comes bagged and with the following parts:
- Main Giant Crab body (which makes it look like the final phase of the battle)
- Extra carapace
- Extra leg
- Base which shows attack orb
- Small card with image of the figure

The card is a nice picture of the prototype of the figure, so it's a bit higher in detail than the actual figure itself.

The Figure - Assembly

Assembling this figure was quite an adventure. Adding the extra carapace and leg was very fiddly work and it happened a lot that when I had lodged one of the two in, that the other would pop out. It was a frustrating assembly to say the least, but I'm happy that now that I have this figure together it does not seem like it will fall apart soon.

The Figure - starting phase

And here we have the figure fully put together! The details in sculpt and paint are absolutely amazing!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eN5CMjsLawNTkHi4D-2Hz8okb8dOynDLBwcJ8da2xCYG-4_Tgu3dDod1PyHnjE8KiDcD5ZEFwzLbmVsTjhqV8bPJ6TENQDGZHfD1WmjPsAHMi8tT1K5ksQ66EUTeGc0dzY7pSOtXgE5dHxD7L_7Bop48Bk8GWVSzdmUBd9zg_EB50wxgehG4iTa1dkkmSGC4Kx43yynoE4a7Zp71s5Lc1W3a2jPPy-rjlNXfybROiEIWcAeZmS51G9B4zv6QwejDbpFR07Snt_Nc2GoDk9fd2s6L68WjUJbBh4xeYTGjhiT5-X0sLNrSfetsOj0iffbGzN3zMXlYXxVUtpJ6NbnPODoxbTxBzX1i3p_W7CEpK7kyyURUZaZWlnD-a95l692upPkB91O3wY_URSfl_UmSzt3MOgmI5YUBRVuIqvmN3Ac2x0y4yHFL6_nbgY92-8xoYwmhBxSyrMqN9Fj3BEzsp9nOJ7f2yQPHDiOQeMUq6sn48iPWSsK37IYXsi3sY988kWjcrazPbTaPd7DIIX5NGvQEpJnfuwtc9FtZSfh8DSlLRfqSpheF6i9195ANt_Rr8AeftaNHOGXUuovzpKy8dVsDSEntpYK_nVdblumvP3_CRYEwCjki1d8FwKoK_IiFNjheebJ_3_fvozX377hT768dkXm-FZQ=w1288-h966-no?.jpg

The carapace has a lot of texture sculpted and I'm happy they added the details of multiple weapons being stuck in the outer carapace. These weapons are the most weakest part of the figure though, as they are all so thin, they are prone to bending, which you can already see happening a bit to my just unboxed copy of the figure.

The front carapace sticks out a lot to the front, making it accurate to the game, where it's used as both a shield and a slamming attack.

Let's also not forget to take a look at the cleverly designed base. The green color makes it look like the texture of the area the battle is held in, and the transparant piece at the front gives a floating effect to the attack ball that the Giant Crab is charging.

The amount of small details in sculpt and paint on this figure is incredible and that also shows in it's more 'bare' form! From the 'mouth' to the eyes and all the shading and details in it's feet! The only downside to point out is the seamline across the face.

From the top you can see the gash and the sword left behind by an earlier adventurer that battled the Giant Crab!

Even the bottom of the figure has been sculpted and shaded very well.

Different light

In artifical light, the base show up even more. I also noticed now what is possibly the only defect on this figure: some leftover red paint at the bottom of the base.

The gash at the back of this figure continues to be my favorite detail.

The Points

Positive
- Really nicely recreated figure of an memorable boss fight.
- High quality sculpt and paint for it's size and price.

Neutral
- Some parts are prone to bending.

Negative
- Frustrating assembly.

The Scores

As this is a mini-review of a mini-item, I will just keep it at this Giant Crab trading figure being a 8/10, with 1,5 point deduction for the horrible and frustrating assembly and 0,5 deduction for the easily bendable parts. Other than that, the figure is near-perfect.

Conclusion

A must-get figure if you also have good memories to (the first boss fight of) this game and very recommendable for people that like to collect (Final Fantasy) monsters or are big fans of crustaceans in general!

Availability

The clear ITEM #146977 and metal ITEM #285071 versions of this figure seem to be less popular and available a lot more, so you might have to wait it out a bit before you find this colored version for sale. If you find this one for sale, one without a box, but sealed or secondhand-good-condition will cost you about ¥500, a bit more than it's release price, but definitely worth it in the current market. It's clear and metal variants seem to go for a bit more, with average prices of ~¥700.

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will now really be the one about Rocket Booster Sanya ITEM #99028 !

BVibes (7 days ago) #57226815How nostalgic! I had no idea CC had any kind of merch. I still listen to the OST a lot and River Belle Path definitely has one of the best songs.
Thank you for the awesome review! It brought back some great memories. What clan did you tend to play as? Did you ever get to play multiplayer?

There is a bit of merch out there! My personal favorite item from the franchise is ITEM #645768 and I hope to find ITEM #215888 one day. There are also multiple Mog plushies made ITEM #736384 , which are nice, but I doubt I'll ever find them for sale anywhere.

I started mainly playing Selkie, but later preferred playing with Yukes for their magic power. Although my personal favorite in looks are Lilities, such cute things! Clavats are the only ones that didn't really interest me much, even though I set up new profiles multiple times with both male and female ones. ^^'' What about you? :)

Regarding the multiplayer, I tried to set it up back in the days with multiple of my friends, but most of them found it too long-winded and just preferred to play shorter/faster games (like Mario Kart or Smash Bros) whenever we got together on the GameCube. The multiplayer option is nice, but the only way for it to 'work' is if you really dedicate time with someone to regularly play (almost like a D&D or boardgame group lol). I have tried for a long time to get my husband into starting a multiplayer with me, but have not succeeded yet. I take it you didn't play the multiplayer or have 'bad' experiences as well?

I'm happy to read you enjoyed the review! :) I love this game so much I can ramble for hours and hours... :')

victorviper (7 days ago) #57230372Interesting. I didn't expect to read a review of a crab figure today :).
The original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for the GameCube is in my opinion the best installment in the Final Fantasy franchise.
That's kind of a Final Fantasy hot take! I think most fans of the franchise would say that either FF7, FF6, Tactics, FF4, or maybe even FF10 was the best installment in the series.
Looking forward to the Rocket Booster Sanya review!

Hehe, I didn't expect to buy a figure of a crab either, but when one of your favorite games lacks in the merchandise-department... ;) Luckily I'm very nostalgic to this boss fight and the quality of the figure is very good!

Well, I always try to get people into Crystal Chronicles, as it's really IMO the best FF out there, but with the ones you say, I also like Tactics a lot. I have a bit of a weak point for multiple of their spin-offs. Crystal Chronicles will soon also get an HD version for the Switch by the way. :) Nothing is changed to the game as far as I know, just the resolution is bumped up to look good on newer screens.

lesser-robot-cat (8 days ago) #57101747Thanks for a great review! Seeing it from all angles paints a better picture than the box art.
I don't pay enough attention to the Creatures line, and I really should. The photos of this figure brought that battle right back! I've got my GC out... maybe I should play Crystal Chronicles again.

Thanks for liking the review! :) While writing on it, I could hear the boss battle music in my head...haha! This game always deserves a replay. ;) I definitely recommend to look into this figure line to check if your favorite monsters are in there! Some of these go for quite big amounts like Kimm also mentioned below, but a good chunk of the line is affordable as well. At least this guy is super affordable!

illumi4Love (9 days ago) #57078956I'm a HxH fan so I love wall of texts lol. Gotta say I am impressed with the details on the figure, and the fact that you opened your article with information pertaining to the game the figure is from was awesome. Thanks

I try to keep the backstory/general information short, but I always end up typing a lot more than it should be, haha. Glad to read it was appreciated. :) This trading figure is definitely impressive for it's size/age/price!

Kimm134Saya (9 days ago) #57077112Yup, I also have the crystal and metallic variants of the Creatures (which reminds me, I should create separate database entries for them here). The metallic ones are pretty cool, with a mostly dark silver finish and just a touch of one color in select areas. The clear ones are crap, all of them. Since there's no paint, no friction is holding the pieces together. As soon as you have assembled the figure, most of the pieces just pop out. This is even more frustrating on Creatures with lots of parts like Sleipnir, Necron, etc.
I did notice that there are almost no collectors for the variants, so I just give them away for free whenever someone buys from me. If only they changed the clear variant to an alternate color variant...

It's nice to hear that at least the metallic variant is interesting, it made me re-check ITEM #285071 and I indeed see some blue metallic accents at it's feet, which I did not notice before.

Clear variants are in 99% of the cases crap and although I own multiple from other sets to complete the collection, by themselves I barely have anything positive to say about them. So yeah, if I pick up another Giant Crab, I will go for the metallic version for sure. :)

Luckily for us the 'clear variant version'-era seems to be over, I don't think I've seen any clear variants in a set being made in at least 10 years. I still have multiple clear variants wished to get some other sets complete, but I only pick them up when I randomly stumble upon them for a good deal.

Maakie (9 days ago) #57076387Hehe, I have done quite some mini reviews! :) It's nice to do inbetween reviewing bigger pieces~ Especially my next review of Sanya is going to be a 2-parter for sure! >.<
Their details are sooo good for their size. I'm pretty sure their sculpts would work fine on prize figure sized items as well~
Do you have all 3 variations from the Giant Crab? Anything interestingly different about the other 2 variations? I might get them for completionist sake, but I think this one looks best.
I currently don't have any others from this set in my collection, but I used to own ITEM #12287 which looked amazing as well.

Kimm134Saya (9 days ago) #57075468Wow, I didn't expect a trading figure to be reviewed, but this is great. Before I started collecting the creatures, I thought their sizes were around 4 to 6 inches based on the photos. I was surprised to see that they're just around 2 inches! The details are too good.
I have 7 of Giant Crab at the moment, and hundreds of the other Creatures and Creatures Kai, but I still don't have everything. Collecting them from blind boxes is frustrating, but getting them individually can be too expensive since some cost as much as ¥20000.
