! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

This is a review of a figure with visible panties, which is why I marked it NSFW !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Francesca Lucchini ENTRY #2039 from Strike Witches ENTRY #2 ! This figure ITEM #3708 is made by GDH ENTRY #9559 and Organic ENTRY #7677 . It's interesting to point out that she was sculpted by Me-n ENTRY #8328 , who is famous for being the sculptor of many Mecha Musume figures, including the Toranoana classics.

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Strike Witches is a manga, light novel and anime series with character designs from the famous artist Shimada Fumikane/Humikane ENTRY #21456 . The storyline of the franchise takes place in an alternative WWII, where girls with magical powers, called witches, represent famous pilots and the enemy to be beaten are aliens called Neuroi. Witches are the only people that can wear Striker Units, airplane-legs needed to get close to the Neuroi. The series may be a bit hard to get into as it can seem very strange for some, but it's easy to fall in love with the character designs that are a nice mix of cute and fierce.

Francesca Lucchini is the youngest member of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing. She has a very childish personality, is very easygoing and tries to slack off from training a lot. During battle she shows more of her serious side and is especially good at flying. From what I have noticed from the Strike Witches fanbase, she's dearly loved (because she is cute and funny) or truly hated (for her obnoxious behaviour). Personally, I thought of her as very cute, but I was sometimes a bit annoyed at how she treated the other girls at the base.

The reason why and how I got her

I got this figure as an unexpected gift in my local anime forum their Secret Santa last year. If you want to see that loot and more, you can check this blog: BLOG #42278 . I was not specifically looking for this figure right now, but I did have her and the other Strike Witches figure made by this manufacturer ITEM #4640 on my wishlist, so I was happy to receive this gift!

Although there is no official artwork she is made after as far as I know, this figure is definitely based on the artwork style from Humikane Shimada himself, rather than the anime style most other Strike Witches figures are modelled after. Above image matches with her handgun and one of the optional parts of the posing of this figure, but could not be related to the figure as the figure's release was inbetween the first OVA and first anime series.

This figure definitely has an interesting box design, where there is a lot of space made to display all the optional pieces the figure comes with. The dropping-bomb shaped windows on the sides are a nice touch. Overall the color palette of the box is quite nice, with the outside having matching colors with Francesca's Striker Units and the inside being an eyecatching metallic blue. The back of the box however, has a look very similar to the box design of many prize figures.

The left side of the box actually has an error in the shadow graphic of Francesca, where a piece of her hair has incorrectly not been removed. On the right side this error doesn't exist.

The backside of the box with all it's information is where it gets interesting as there is so little known of the release of this figure. In the database the manufacturer of this figure is listed as GDH, which after some research, turns out to be a company part of or directly working for, studio Gonzo. From the small amount of figures released and announced for this company, all of the characters were from Gonzo anime. The back of the packaging seems to imply that selling was done by GDH (Gonzo's (online) shop?) and the actual manufacturer is Organic ENTRY #7677 . Now, I have heard of that manufacturer before as I used to own some trading figures by them. Never one of their bigger figures, although ITEM #4259 had been on my wishlist in the past.

Regarding Organic, they were a short-lived manufacturer. They started producing figures at around 2004, which were mainly PVC versions of Garage Kits. They seemed to have quit around 2009, with some of their figures later being re-released by Kaiyodo. Some researching brought me to Kaiyodo and Organic already working together before Organic disappeared from the market, although they do not seem to actually have merged or belong to the same main company.

In the short time both Organic and GDH lived, they seem to have released subpar figures which were already mocked by people when they were just released. Their better pieces are the collaborations with Kaiyodo. Their selling prices, were only a bit lower as other figures would go for back then. This Lucchini was released for a ¥4,200 price.

The box is sealed off with one piece of square tape.

Now that I knew after that research that GDH was part of Gonzo, I understood why their logo was at mulitple places on the box.

The front also has an sticker of authenticity from Kadokawa for using the Strike Witches license. Their sticker in 2007 was definitely a lot less elaborate than the ones they are using now!

As earlier mentioned, this figure comes with a lot of parts and comes in quite a big packaging for the figure's size.

When I first got the figure out of the box and wanted to start with the assembly, the confusion started. The figure direcly out of the packaging does not fit on the base!

After some more fiddling around, I found out that the only way to make her fit on the base, is to attach the two additionally packaged bottom parts to her. These parts can not be used as-is! I have no clue why Organic included parts like this. Was it to make this figure look better inside the box? Was it because they expected people to want to display her 'flying' so they wouldn't need a base? I guess we will never know!

Even when the correct bottom parts of the Striker Units are used, this figure has a lot of issues with fitting correcly on her base. A lot of force was needed before she fit in the pegs.

For this review, I will put Francesca in a couple of different display options.

Display option #1: With shotgun

I thought the most fitting basic look for this figure would be to display her with her shotgun, as also the main promotional image shows the figure this way.

Flaws and bad first impression aside, this posing is quite unique and fun for Francesca!

She definitely has 'older style' eyes with them being purple instead of the green they were in the anime. Her forehead is a big big, but I think her smile is quite cute. She is definitely 'different' from other Francesca figures, although I would rather call her 'unique' than ugly.

The figure is quite subpar in the smaller details. There are many seamlines to be seen in her hair and the white paint for the inside of her ears and her ribbons is not applied very neatly.

The overall movement/styling of the hair is nice though. We shouldn't forget that this is a figure from 2007 that was released for an slightly lower release price than other figures back then.

Francesca's white clothes show a bit of discoloration, where mainly the middle of her body is more yellow than her arms. You would expect this being sundamage of some sorts, but that's near impossible because of the location of these spots and how she was posed in the box.

The smaller details on her jacket is applied so-so. It's nice to see the detail of the sewn lines in her coat, though.

The painting on Francesca's shotgun is a bit simple. Her right hand shows quite some seamlines. The fingers don't have any details such as fingernails, but I wasn't expecting something like that from a figure this age.

The figure's base is really a dust magnet. The mentioned text FRAT G55 Centauro is not something really existing, but there does exist an Italian-invented and -used airplane called Fiat G55 Centauro. This base references back to the 'older time' of Mecha Musume character designs and figures, where they always found it really important to mention the boat/plane/tank the character was modelled after. The Japanese text translates to: Francesca Lucchini Romagna Air force No. 4-21. To be honest, I'm not that well known with the story that was written down for Lucchini in her pre-Strike Witches anime-design. I guess she was maybe written down as an counterpart for Italia-san ITEM #4715 ? If someone knows more about this, I would like to hear!

The many different extra arms really give a lot of options for this figure!

The handgun has an surprising amount of sculpted detail, although a lot of it is 'hidden' by the thick black paint on the gun itself.

These interchangable arms all have a secure feeling fit, but leave a bit of gaps visible. The arms also suffer a lot less from discoloration issues, making Francesca's coat pretty yellow in comparison when looked at from up close.

Setting up for the next pose, and...

Jep, it happened. My first breakage with this figure. I was already expecting a bit to get issues with exhanging pieces with this figure, but breaking her accidentally is really disappointing.

This figure does not come with actual joints, but with what I will call a 'pop' system. You put in in a slightly bigger part of flexible PVC in the arm and when you hear a 'pop' sound, it is locked. The same happens for removing a piece.

Here is an correcly removed hand and you see how fragile this 'pop' system is, especially when a figure gets older, it becomes tricker to remove these without breakages. You can see in this picture that even though the hand was correcly removed, there is a fracture at the bottom. Making this a hand that will easier actually break if inserted/removed another time.

Here you see an correcly inserted hand halfway in there, so before the 'pop' sounds and full placement.

This experience and seeing the damages on this figure, let me decide to not try to swap as much anymore and decide for one pose to keep this figure in.

The disappointment with damaging the figure aside, I was happy to have found my most interesting and final display option for Francesca. As far as I know, there are no other figures of her where she can be displayed dual-wielding knives, so this is very unique!

Her silhouette is also something you don't see much with other anime figures.

The Points

Positive
- Lots of display options.
- The most varied non-action figure Francesca out there.
- It's nice to see a figure based on the earlier art style instead of the anime style.

Neutral
- Lots of questionable manufacturing choices, such as the way too high release price for what you get.
- Overall subpar quality in sculpt and paint, but nothing too glaring to be put into the 'negative' list.

Negative
- Figure does not fit well on her base and comes with strange Striker Unit pieces she can't be displayed with (luckily there is an additional set).
- Swappable pieces are prone to breaking.

The Scores

Scoring this figure was really hard with all her ups and downs, but also trying to consider her age and release price.

Sculpting 7/10
Not an amazing sculpt, but also below average price. A bit less than what you would expect/hope from a figure this price/age, but nothing too bad.

Painting 7/10
Mixed paint quality with the worst offender being the very yellowing jacket. The paint on her Striker Units 'saves' what otherwise would have been an even lower score.

Posing 8/10
Although the posing comes with aged issues, there are so many different display options and accessories that I do really have to give some credit for that.

Base 4/10
The base is an absolute joke. Really thin plastic on which the figure does not fit well.

Packaging 8/10
Except for the boring backside, the packaging has a nice design and I love the windows on the side.

Enjoyment 8/10
Even with parts breaking down and the overall quality being lower than expected, I actually still quite enjoy this figure. She was an unexpected, but very welcome gift and I really like having this more unique looking Francesca in my collection!

Conclusion

She is definitely not the greatest quality, but not the worst out there for sure. I would only recommend her to big Francesca fans or Strike Witches completionists.

Availability

Personally I have never seen this figure for sale anywhere until I got her gifted. When I researched into it while writing this review I actually found one sealed and new in stock for 1,100 yen. I got her gifted in an secret santa with a maximum budget of $35 before shipment and the other items my Santa gave me were worth at least $15, so I assume my Santa did not pay any more than $20 for mine either. I have not seen Francesca for sale at more than one specific place, but I assume she sells for the price of an prize figure nowadays and it might take a while before you can find one somewhere in stock. She seems to not been heavily hunted, but with those low prices she probably also doesn't stay in stock somewhere for long.

And to finish it!

Francesca is currently put on my temporary Strike Witches items shelf, that will later get their own spots.

https://tinyurl.com/y5q2xh2t?.jpg

As you can see, this figure is not really that big. She is a bit bigger than a Figma, but a bit smaller than a prize figure if it were standing upright. I put her on the smaller end of a 1/10 scale.

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be about a type of figure that seems a bit hated in this community: A Funko POP from the Resident Evil Licker ITEM #518248 . As I personally was postively surprised with it's quality I really wanted to make an review about this figure.

An FYI Lucchini's guns are Italian Beretta Model 38 SMG and Beretta M1934 Pistol. The two knives are bayonets for the SMG. I don't think she uses them in the anime. I'm guessing they are like the base part of the old Mecha Musume character design.

Thx for posting all the SW reviews.

Maakie (1 month ago) #58806248She really reminds me of Italia-san, I always had the idea that the design of Italia-san 'evolved' into the Lucchini we know now. Italia-san and the others from that Toranoana-line all have amazing boxes (and those mini artbooks!), I'm really happy to own that full set. :)

I feel the same way! Especially with the alternate tan body and striped panties. They have the same happy look too. I think a lot of the early mecha musume figures could have been prototype 501st girls.

victorviper (1 month ago) #58807737She looks a little yandere with the knives!
It's too bad the overall quality of the figure is sub-par, but this figure is kind of an interesting one for Shimada/SQ fans as a link between some of Shimada's older designs and the more contemporary depictions of the SW characters.
I've always taken the view that Lucchini and Italia-san are actually one and the same. I can imagine starting with Italia as a concept, and once you add some additional backstory and give the character more of a developed personality, you've got Lucchini.

Hehe, I didn't even think of that! You definitely get a very 'different' Lucchini set up. :)

I have that feeling as well, just as ENTRY #4304 becoming Barkhorn and a combination of ENTRY #4299 / ENTRY #3753 for Perrine, ENTRY #3750 for Shirley and I can go on like this, haha! Although Italia-san and Me 109E-3 are the most obvious being also the same nationality as their SW counterparts.

I guess this figure is only really interesting if you're into the older Mecha Musume merchandise as well. Considering you are, do you think you will pick this one up one day? She sells for cheaper than the average prize figure. ;)

rainglow (1 month ago) #58785341Nice to see a review of an older figure. The face sculpt and overall look is pretty charming in its own way. I used to own ITEM #4715 and like this, the box really was unlike anything else I've gotten.

ZoidsFanatic2 (1 month ago) #58775718I’ve got to say it’s neat seeing the old pre-anime Strike Witches designs. Not talking about the “proto” ones, but the designs done before the anime aired. Their designs have certainly evolved, that’s for sure. Great detailed review as ever!

Same for me, the quality of this figure is definitely not something to rave about, but this figure is really endearing. It's like having something from the era inbetween the original Mecha Musume designs and the actual Strike Witches designs. She definitely stands out from my other Lucchini's while still being recognizable.

Thanks for liking the review! :)
