Galaxy Express 999 a truly beautiful story wrapped in mesmerizing visuals full of romanticism and thought provoking life lessons. A story and series I fell in love with a year ago and still am to this day, not only does the 999 series deliver impact-full scenes that will stay with you for a long time the emotional journey is both a sad and yet heart warming one. This series has a special place in my heart, so being such a fan of the series I could not believe that I got my hands on the Real Art Works 3D Polyresin sculpture of the movie poster! If you'd like to hear that excitement then you can watch my small unboxing/review video or keep reading for a more in depth review. :)

The Box

The Box isn't too exciting tbh as it is generally the same as other boxes from the Real Art Works series but it kinda suits the feel of 999 as they have added a space look with blue glinting stars, the main lettering is bold in silver foil to really grab your attention as it gleams in the light. I like that the actual picture on the front isn't in color as it gives of a more retro look and works well with the style of the series.

The side shows more of the stars and the back shows us our first glimpse at the full color sculpture with four pictures together.

The top has a carry handle which is handy as this is super heavy and very delicate. Sadly I forgot to get a pic of the whole thing in polystyrene but I can attest that it was well packaged and wrapped well with a lot of plastic bags to keep it safe.

Right lets take a look at the sculpture itself....

SCULPT/PAINT

Seriously the first moment I saw this I was just speechless I mean WOW! Just WOW!!!
Happinet/organic have done a mindblowing job recreating this, anyway lets take a closer look....
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215495.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215496.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215497.jpeg
First of all they have captured Maetel perfectly, her feminine charm and that bewitching feel about her character has been recreated nicely, her eyes still have that lonely look as if she is staring off into the deep recesses of space and her trademark hat looks like real fur, which was quite a surprise to me as it's been sculpted that well. Her hair is flowing as it's draped softly on her shoulder, really like how they did this, yes there is a seam line on the side which is quite visible but I can forgive that as the face sculpting is just sublime and I'm still shocked at how well they recreated her!
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215498.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215499.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215500.jpeg
From a distance it's hard to tell this is 3D but up close this sculpture really pops as you can see the writhing jumping out at you, I like how they mounted this, as they could have just painted this on as it's not really the main focus but no it's sculpted to really grab your attention.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215501.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215503.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215504.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215502.jpeg
Onto the 999 itself and again they've done a remarkable job on recreating the iconic engine including extra detail to the undercarriage and pistons, sadly they didn't sculpt the 999 on the front which is a shame, I think this is the only thing that makes me sad about this as the 999 number is integral to the engine and the series and the fact it's missing sucks. Anyway before we move on lets talk about the painting, I can't see any paint errors which is a good thing and they've definitely captured the feel of the movie and the series, I especially like the two tone effect on Maetals hair and the background as they really have done an exceptional job making the stars look like they could be twinkling in space. The 999 itself looks like it could be pewter but interestingly the color helps it stand out more along with the well known track that leads it off into the distance onto another adventure.... I'm really impressed with the paint job and just like the series this is captivating in every sense of the word.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215505.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215506.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215507.jpeg
Another thing I really love about this piece is how well they've sculpted Tetsuro, he has a windswept look as if the train is moving and the lines at the back of him do give this little window a motion feel which looks really cool.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215508.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215509.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215510.jpeg
Another thing that shocked me is this isn't as thick as I thought it would be, I was expecting it to be huge and yes it is quite a size the special Real Art Work stand holds it in place nicely, annoyingly though it can't be displayed without it as it will lean forward instantly which means it will always have to be displayed at an angle which is a pain as you don't really benefit from the greatness of the 3D effect unless you look at it straight on.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215511.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215512.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215513.jpeg
Our journey is almost at an end now and I've really enjoyed telling you all about this a few more things to mention before I must depart...
The stand itself is velvet and so is the back so it will hold it safely and you can be happy in the knowledge that it won't get chipped or damaged over time. As mentioned about the writing the same applies to the 999 logo which is also sculpted to give of the 3D illusion.

Well there's not much more I can say really about this except it's magnificent, a spellbinding piece, which I'm still in a daze that I have it, after spending over 5 months looking for it to be able to now own it and sit here writing a review about it brings tears of joy to my eyes. Honestly though I still feel like I can't express in words just how much this means to me, hopefully I've done enough to convey my feelings here, what can I say expect I'm overjoyed! lol

So does this live up to the original poster? 100% YES!!! Happinet/Organic have done a phenomenal job recreating Leiji's beautiful artwork.

Enjoyment:
10/10

As this was released in 2007 it is rare now hence my excitement at owning it but if you do like I did and stalk Mandarake, Shopping Mall Japan and Yahoo Japan auctions you may just be lucky to get your hands on one.

I hope you have enjoyed watching/reading MFC and I'll see you soon and remember the Galaxy Express 999 will take you on a journey... a never-ending journey, a journey to the stars....

Heavenly_Otaku (9 months ago) #59537716Thank you for making this read and the video. I am reminiscing of the past about being drawn to Maetel at my boy age.
It's about time I rewatch the ever great series of Galaxy Express 999.

Thank you for watching and reading! :D She's so mysterious and charming it's hard not to fall for her! lol If you wait Discotek have got the entire series coming out on Blu-Ray soon, I'm in anticipation to get it and do a re-watch myself. :)

lesser-robot-cat (9 months ago) #59541883For a series so full of action, Galaxy Express 999 certainly makes us all feel wistful, doesn't it? I often find myself humming tunes from it.
I was thinking that your rating was a bit high until I saw the year this was made. For its time it is very well made - and original. You don't see many relief sculptures, then or now. It really is an interesting and eye-catching statuette.

It does, Leji just has a way of making you care about his series in the most unexpected ways, I had no idea how much I would love this series considering how sad it can be but it just has this pure romanticism about it, just getting on a train and flying through the cosmos without a care in the world, ah if only! lol Me too! lol I love the music, they couldn't have got it any better it captures the feel of the show perfectly. yes for something that was made so long ago this really is a truly remarkable bit of sculpting, I mean yes there's that seam line but everything else is just amazing! Happinet/Organic did a few more including some that aren't on the database, I manage to discover one for Devil May Cry 3 and one really cool one for RE Cyborg 009 which is has so much going on on it it's shame I can't find a pic of it on the net to share, it looks awesome! It really is, one of my fav pieces in my collection. :)

victorviper (9 months ago) #59491816What a neat item. At first, I thought the train sat in the same plane as the rest of the "poster", but it's quite cool the way the train comes out of the poster!
Do you own a copy of the original (paper) poster? It would look very cool to display the poster together with its 3D recreation!

It is, I fell in love with this the moment I saw it existed! lol Yeah I was shocked at that as well as I thought it was 3D but stuck to the poster rather than actually coming out at you, really coll it does that.

I don't, I've been looking into them on SMJ but they go really quick and sometimes for high prices too, I hope to get one though as it would be nice to have that along with the sculpture. :)
