! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

This is a review of a figure with gore (character shopping off his arm), which can be considered NSFW !

Welcome to this mini review! Today I will be talking about a high quality trading figure of Satou ENTRY #90352 from Ajin ENTRY #50398 ! This figure ITEM #396895 is from the Ajin Vignette Collection series ENTRY #99088 made by Good Smile Company ENTRY #7620 . I also want to give some extra credit to the sculptor, Kagawa Masahiko ENTRY #14915 , who has a really big portfolio of figure sculpts, especially in trading figures and small diorama's.

I will start off with telling some more about his background.

Background

Ajin is an still-ongoing manga series in Japan, which has also received an Netflix Original anime series spanning 26 episodes. The series is about Ajin, people that have regenerative abilities that awaken when they are killed. Next to their regeneration they have an IBM (Invisible Black Matter) attached to them, which is a spirit that can either aid or work against them. Some Ajin have good relationships with their IBM and use them to get to their goals, others have very stubborn ones. The government has deemed Ajin dangerous, so if it's publicly found out that someone is an Ajin, the government takes them in.

Satou is one of the Ajin that was taken in by the government and had many tests done on him. He escaped and since then has sworn his revenge. He is the leader of the pro-Ajin movement, who wants to get together an as big as possible group of Ajin View spoilerHide spoileras an army against the government. He plans and executes assassinations, destructions of buildings and so on, all to get captured Ajin free and let them join his crew. With his background as an soldier and his abilities as an Ajin, he is mostly on the front line himself as well.

The reason why and how I got him

My first exposure to Ajin was through seeing it on the Netflix homepage and being intrigued by the synopsis of the anime, it had a lot of themes in anime series that I like (supernatural, thriller, little bit of military) so I soon started watching it. I definitely was impressed and quickly started looking forward to a second season! The second season was nice as well and had a sort of closed ending, but was not fully done. This made me pick up the manga later, although I am a bit behind in reading the volumes right now.

Satou quickly became my favorite character when I got into this series. In high contrast to the protagonist that is learning all about being an Ajin, Satou has went through a lot and completely mastered the usage of his abilites, which gives us a lot of incredible action scenes.

Original art

This earlier mentioned mastering of Satou in his Ajin abilities is also something we see in this figure. An Ajin regenerates when they die, and get 'reset' in a way that also heals any wounds, brings back lost limbs and so on. In this specific figure we see a very popular scene from both the manga and anime. Here Satou gets hit by a poison dart and by first instinct he chops off the arm hit by this dart, so he can go on fighting. Regeneration takes a couple of seconds, and that's a waste of time for Satou when he can use his other arm to still fight people.

Manga version

This figure was released when the anime was halfway through it's airing time, but as the figures from this set were announced a lot earlier, combined with the angle this figure is in, it is clear that it's based on the scene in the manga rather than the anime.

This figure comes in a pretty generic blind trading figure box. Unless you are buying second hand and opened, you won't know which character is inside.

Satou is in one piece, sealed in a plastic bag. He comes with a cardboard instruction paper (which seems to say the same as the back of the box).

Satou's face is very well sculpted, with his trademark grin and closed eyes. The amount of shading added on his face is amazing as well. The sculpt of the details in his ear is higher than a lot of my scaled figures!

His trademark hat has some wrinkles sculpted in there. His hair has a high amount of detailed sculpt and shade as well.

The details don't stop there! He also has a holster for his gun, with the handle sticking out. It again shows some amazing detailing.

His pants are, just like the rest of this figure, great looking with multiple creases and quite a bit of shading. This figure being only from the thighs and up, also makes it a nice reference to the manga panel this was based on.

The bottom of his thigh has the copyright markings for the franchise, as this figure does not come with a base.

And now for the main eyecatcher of this figure: The arm being cut off live! An super-smart trick has been done by the sculptor here: With the top part of the arm being attached to the knife, actual seperation is to be seen.

Another nice detail is that it is not a clean cut, and you can see some messy flesh at what is left of the bottom part of the arm.

The poison dart that hit Satou is also included, although unfortunately my copy has a slight paint error. The way the hand is shaded and sculpted make up for it, though!

Overall this was a figure where I had high expectations of, and it blew me away even more than expected!

Size comparison

This guy is small!

Here he is next to some items from my horror collection. Sorry for the blurry picture, the glass door was closed. He's about half of the height of a Nendoroid and Funko POP, a third of a Figma and any scaled figure will be a giant next to him.

It's pretty crazy that he is about the size of the boot of my bishoujo Ash Williams ITEM #600025 !

The Points

As this is a mini-review of a mini-figure, I'll keep it more simple: My expectations were high, but this figure was even more incredible than I expected! I can't rate it anything else than a 10/10. I don't even want to nitpick on the slight paint errors and give him a 9/10, he deserves this full 10/10!

Conclusion

A must-buy if you're a fan of Satou or Ajin. If you're in into (body) horror/gore, this scene going on might interest you as well. If you're just in general into trading figures or like some unique scenes going on with your figures, there is not much that can go wrong here!

Availability

It can be a bit of a wait before you find Satou for sale, as he is the most popular of this set, but his sales prices are dirt cheap. With a release price of an already low ¥833, you can easily find him even cheaper. I paid ¥250 for mine because of 'box damage'. Who cares about the box of a trading figure?! I easily would have paid an extra 0 behind that for this figure, because the craftsmanship of this figure is amazing!

And to finish it!

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be a big one again, this time about Kotobukiya's scaled Ink figure ITEM #992 !

heroizumi (27 days ago) #62155942Omg thank you for this review!! I actually nearly bought the set he came in because I love Sato so much, but I decided against it because I wasn't sure of the quality of the figure (being a blind box smaller size item). I definitely now regret it after seeing your photos, but I am certainly going to look at where to get him now!! Thank youuu~~~

Luckily they are still cheap to get, although waiting for a set or specific figure can take a while. Good luck and thanks for liking the review! :)

Naelyth (28 days ago) #62064128Great review! I love the clear pictures that you've taken. I actually own this whole collection and was planning on selling it, but your review has given me second thoughts, lol. Satou is definitely my favorite of the set; I always found the way they managed to separate his arm from his body incredibly clever!

This set has great figures, although I also think that Satou is really the best of them all with the super creative sculpt of chopping his arm off. Thanks for liking the review! :)

victorviper (28 days ago) #62092193I was not expecting to wake up this morning to read a figure review of someone severing their own arm :).
I think we've discussed this before, but I've never seen Ajin and I probably should watch it. It sounds a little bit like Parasyte ENTRY #37982 which is one of my favorites.

Hehe, this figure is definitely unique! I love figures that tell a story and I think that's also the main reason why I have so much trading figures. :)

Yeah I can't 100% remember our earlier convo about it as well, but Ajin has a lot of similar themes to Parasyte, so I'm sure you will enjoy it! I do have to say that I personally think both the manga and anime of Parasyte are better than Ajin, but Ajin is still really aesthetically pleasing with the IBM and has a lot of interesting things with Ajin 'rules' mixed in. I would say it's still worth a watch/read, especially if you like Parasyte. :)
