! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

This is a review of a figure in a tiny China dress, pantyshots have been put in spoiler so the review can be considered SFW !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Kinoshita Hideyoshi ENTRY #2114 from Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu ENTRY #68 ! This figure ITEM #26243 is made by Cospa ENTRY #7704 , a manufacturer that is well known for it's high quality anime apparel , but figure-wise has made a lot more misses (with some exceptions here and there). This figure is part of the Resinya! ENTRY #25547 line, which started off with Garage Kits and prepainted resin figures. After a while they seemed to have mainly switched to PVC figures, but the name stuck with them. This Hideyoshi figure reviewed here is also fully PVC.

I will start off with telling some more about his background.

Background

Baka to Test first started of as an light novel, then turned into a manga, followed up by an anime. It is an comedy/action which takes place at Fumizuki Academys. At this Academy, students are graded and put in a class from highest grades to lowest grades with matching utensils. For example: class A is full of the best students and equipment, while class F are the lowest scoring students and have to sit on the floor behind cardboard boxes. Next to that, there is also another reason why this is no ordinary high school with ordinary students! Every student has his or her own Shoukanjuu (Summoned Beings) which they use to fight with people in other classes. If an class starts a fight with another class, the outcome will make them switch places. For example if Class F wins from class D, Class D will become class F and the other way around. In this series, you follow a group of students in Class F, trying to cope with their low grades and idiocy ("Baka..."), their test to get higher up ("...to Test...") and learn to work with their Summoned Beings (..."to Shoukanjuu!").

The character of which I will review a figure today, Hideyoshi Kinoshita from Class F, claims that he is a guy, but nobody believes him. They think he is a beautiful girl and like to put him into female-clothing. Hence why so many figures of this character are in a dress, in a bunny outfit, in a female swimsuit and so forth! There is also a running joke in the series of Hideyoshi being his own gender, having his own assigned Hideyoshi toilet and Hideyoshi dressing room wherever he goes.

The reason why and how I got him

I remember this figure being added on MFC and thinking 'yikes' at the ¥7,429 release price, which was quite a big number back then. Combined with the prototype having a bit of a weird face, this made me skip on getting the figure on pre-order. I noticed that in the aftermarket his price dropped, but I still had a hard time to claim him on time when I saw him available somewhere.

There is quite a funny story behind how I eventually got this figure. I saw the figure hugely discounted when I visited the event Connichi 2016 (talked about here: BLOG #35069 ). I was wavering back and forth about picking him up, but ended up not doing so. A year later at the same event, someone had handed this figure in at the Bring and Buy, a stand where people can sell their second hand anime merchandise. It was the exact same one as the year before, as I recognized the sticker from the shop on the box. Poor Hideyoshi had not even been opened since that year and with the low selling price of 20 euros (around $23), I decided to pick him up (also showed here: BLOG #40999 )!

There is no specific artwork the posing of this figure was modelled after, but above artwork is a very popular and the 'main' artwork of Hideyoshi showing his China Dress. The exact same color scheme was used and it includes the same details, even the hair buns.

The box is quite compact and has a lot of windows. It mainly shows pictures of the figure and on the front a crop-out of the earlier mentioned China Dress outfit. Interestingly enough, they added some drink glasses on his platter, which he does not have in the original art.

The figure comes in only two pieces: Main figure and the base.

The first assembly try of the figure did not went well, as the pegs in the base were way bigger than the pegs in the feet.

I ended up having to use a small knife to make the holes at the bottom of the feet bigger, so these pegs would fit in.

We can debate about the figure's quality later, but you'll have to admit that the pose and overall vibe of the figure is adorable! I was personally surprised at the back of the dress being open. Considering there is no artwork showing the back of this dress, it's open to the interpretation of the figure manufacturer what they wanted to do with it. Other Hideyoshi figures with the China Dress seem to have a closed back.

Looking at all the details!

Getting right to the most debatable part of the figure: His face. I personally think it's cute, but his cheeks are more puffy than this character is supposed to look. In big contrast to the rest of the face, the eyes come very close to the source material.

The bangs are sculpted quite nicely and the trademark hair pins are also included.

His hair buns have quite a visible seamline at the bottom. The ribbons are decently sculpted and painted, but it all feels quite subpar for the figure's release price.

The hair is one solid color and the bottom wefts are decently sculpted.

The painting of the collar of the China Dress is so-so. The black lines are not even everywhere. I do like that the top part of the dress has some nice shading, you can see where the ribcage ends and the stomach begins.

Although the quality is quite subpar, the posing is really nice and this figure of Hideyoshi has a lot of good angles!

Hideyoshi's wrist cuffs are decenly sculpted and painted, but look a bit clunky.

His hands are a bit clumped together in sculpt.

From up-close you can also see quite some PVC leftovers and the hands 'merging' a bit strangely.

A big eye catcher of this figure is of course the very short China Dress with the cute spikey apron on top.

The execution and attachment of the dress parts is a bit so-so. The overall feel I get from this figure is that it's stuck somewhere inbetween a prize and a scaled figure quality.

The ribbon on the back actually should have been a bit bigger, so you could also see the sides of it when displayed from the front. Again, the quality of the sculpt is decent, the paint has a little bit of shading.

Panty-shots in spoiler: View spoilerHide spoiler Such a short dress has to give you at least a bit of a panty-shot, right? Surprisingly, it's pretty hard to get a good look at the panties!

Hideyoshi wears red panties in the same color as the China Dress, making me think his design is in a sort-of bodysuit with this figure, with later the skirt attached. Unfortunately for us otokonoko fans, there is no visible bulge to be seen.

As the artwork does not show shoes, with Hideyoshi China Dress figures the manufacturer can decide what to do. Some other manufacturers gave him small heeled shoes, but Cospa opted for black-and-red flats. The painting of the flats leaves a lot to be desired, though...

The base this figure comes with is a big, black disc with copyright information on the bottom. The black color attracts quite some dust. As earlier mentioned in the review, the fitting of the pegs is pretty bad and I'm curious if other owners of this figure had to make similar adjustments to the figure as I had to do.

The Points

Positive
- A classic Hideyoshi outfit nicely recreated
- Cute posing

Neutral
- Face of the figure can spark quite some debate, I personally think it's cute, but not looking very much like the source material

Negative
- Subpar quality for the original release price.
- The pegs of the base did not fit in the figure at all, and I needed to make alterations for it to fit.

The Scores

Sculpting 6/10
If this were a prize figure, the sculpt would have been great! However, we are talking about a scaled figure that was released for the back-then slightly above average price of ¥7,429, which is way too much for the quality you are getting.

Painting 6/10
The paint has a few very good parts, such as the details shaded around the chest, but on most parts of this figure it's one solid color without details. Some parts are painted a bit sloppily as well.

Posing 8/10
Now here comes the good part! His posing is adorable!

Base 4/10
It's a boring base with fitting issues that needs some work before the figure can actually fit on it.

Packaging 8/10
The packaging gets plus points for being very compact. The color-scheme and all the pictures of the figure on it are also very nice.

Enjoyment 7/10
I got this figure for cheap and he's nice to put in my collection with my other Hideyoshi's, but wow, am I glad I did not pick him up for anything close to his retail price!

Conclusion

If you're a Hideyoshi fan and especially if you love him in his China Dress, this is a very nice figure to pick up for a good price. If you're a China Dress fan/collector in general, I would recommend him as well. Just keep in mind that he is best displayed together with some other items as the quality of this figure does not make him centerpiece-worthy.

Availability

He seems to be a bit harder to get nowadays than in the last few years. I considering his quality, I personally would not recommend paying more than ¥4-5K for him, as what you are getting is basically an inbetween prize and scaled figure. If you are in a rush of getting him, some stores have him sitting in stock longer for prices of ¥6K-8K, if you wait a bit longer, you might find him for around ¥3K-5K.

There is also a limited edition black version ITEM #26245 of the China Dress, which I think is a stunning color combination for this figure as well. I have never seen it for sale before, but I assume it fetches higher prices than the red version.

And to finish it!

I am currently still unboxing most of my collection after having most of them in storage for a while, but here is how he is displayed right now:

I really need to work on the lights on the top shelves of my detolf...

I'm slowly unboxing more and more of my Hideyoshi collectibles! And as you can see here, the quality of Cospa's Hideyoshi is definitely a lot higher than Taito's China Dress Hideyoshi.

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next blog will not be a review, but a picture showcase of SEGA's FNC ITEM #144495 figure!

DardDrak (15 days ago) #62891871Ha, I have a big collection of figures and goods of traps, and Hideyoshi is basically the main star from it since he had so many products released - I still have key chains, posters, mousepad and even alarm clock with his cute voice =p
Both versions of this figure from Cospa are the same about the flaws - the black one is just pricier because is rarier to find.
I paid a good amount for this nurse one from Amie-Grand one year ago, but right now Suruga-ya www.suruga-ya.j... has him for a very good price. I liked him, but he is sooo delicate that I broke the latch of his suitcase on the first day after drop it from the bed (and on his page here you can see that I wasn't the only one to do that, ha)
A super glue helped to fix it, but now the suitcase doesn't open anymore - no more injections from the nurse Hideyoshi

I once had a point in which I aimed for a huge otokonoko collection, but then Hideyoshi took over and nowadays it´s a mostly Hideyoshi collection. xD I think I will stick to Hideyoshi only, although some other otokonoko figures are still super tempting to get... ;)

Good to know about the flaws being the same on the black one. I might still buy it one day, but with lower priority.

And wow, thanks for that listing for nurse Hideyoshi! Money is quite tight for me right now, so I won't be able to do any figure orders until at least September/October...I hope he's still in stock then or they have another copy just as affordable. I'm surprised at how good of an price that is! A local store had this figure 'on sale' for years and it was still $125+. And yeah, coldcast is so fragile! I have a couple of coldcasts as well, I think they look great, but I'm not happy with the fragility...

Maakie (15 days ago) #62890938Oh wow, a very dedicated Hideyoshi collector, love to hear that! :D I aim to get my Hideyoshi collection bigger, but have some 'weird' figures as well where I'm still not sure to get them or not (for example: ITEM #72478 , that price...).
Would you say the black version has less flaws than this one or is it about the same?

DardDrak (15 days ago) #62889986Of the 15 Hideyoshi's figures that I have this one and the black version ITEM #26245 aren't really the best ones with their many paint flaws, but I liked both - I just took some time to decide to buy them because the photos in the internet weren't very helpful with the angles (especially with the face), but when I received the first one, well, it worth the 3k yen that I paid for it (the black version was a bit pricier, though).

solluxcaptor (16 days ago) #62879772I really like this figure! I know you mention the face being kind of weird, but IMHO it's the best part of the figure cause the unique style makes it stand out. That's what I really like about it anyway, it raises it above an average figure for me, I think it looks cute.

I'm still not really convinced by the face, but I like how it captures the eyes of the original art style. If you like it so much, I really recommend getting this figure as he goes for quite cheap if you're patient enough. :)

victorviper (16 days ago) #62884553You've got a nice little Hideyoshi subcollection going there :).
This was interesting to read because somehow I've never bought a Cospa figure and I've wondered how good their figures are in general. The overall quality looks fairly prize-like, but for 20 Euros you probably got your money's worth. The people who dropped 7400 yen for the figure new might not be so forgiving, though.
I'll be interested to see your take on ITEM #144495. That's a very interesting figure from a series that probably didn't get the attention it deserved.

Hehe, and I still have quite some more Hideyoshi items to unbox left! Although I'm not sure if I still want to keep all the small goods I have from him, I'm pretty sure about keeping all the figures.

This is my only scaled Cospa figure, I have been more positive about the quality of their trading figures. Cospa merchandise though is great, especially their apparel. Most of Cospa's scaled figures seem to be subpar, although I saw ITEM #33495 and ITEM #5983 in person before and they seemed quite nice (might be the only 2 of the above average ones for Cospa though, looking at the rest of their entries in the database here...).

And yes! That's one of the reasons why I decided to make a blog about FNC! It's been 5+ years since your review and I really want to give this figure and the franchise a bit of attention on MFC again!
