Garage Kit Project - Original Character - Prom 1/7 Ireba Dou GKGarage Kit Project - Original Character - Prom 1/7 Ireba Dou GK

After being quite pleased with my Yurie Garage Kit ITEM #26495 / BLOG #41010 , I quickly started on my next one, an original character called Prom ITEM #119873 from circle Ireba Dou. To be honest, the kit's character design is not really to my tastes, so this kit was cheaply bought and made to practice my handpainting and shading more, before I would start trying out my recently acquired airbrush.

The kit and instructions

The kit I had bought secondhand on a Japanese auction site and came only with the parts bagged, a picture of the prototype from the circle and a basic checklist sheet. I was surprised to see she had so many parts, because the kit looked quite basic as my first impression.

My idea was to not make this kit like the example picture, but give her a more forest/nature-like look, this was mainly inspired by talking to my best friend M. who paints a wood-elf army for Warhammer and by talking to fellow GK-maker REDLIGER .

Preparation

And oh man, was there a lot of preparation to do with this kit!

There were quite a lot of places where it seemed like the resin was not casted well, I had to reinforce those pieces with some extra Tamiya putty to be sure that it would not become holes later.

There were also lots of random 'scratches' I had to sand away.

Prom comes with two faces and the second one is a bit...wow. Well, OK I understand why I could buy her for a bargain, haha! Anyway, with figures with multiple display options I prefer to paint all the parts and afterwards decide which one turned out best for default choice of displaying.

I always start out with the skin color pieces. As with all kits, it looks 'blotchy' at first, but the more layers you paint, the more even the color becomes.

Because of her more 'earthy' color scheme, I decided on a 'dirty' green as main color for her outfit.

Note: From the pictures below this note, I visited my friend M. for a couple of days and worked some more on this kit, only I forgot tot take my camera with me. Below pictures are a bit lower quality and less high resolution, sorry for the inconvenience! Some colors also look off compared to earlier pictures.

~shiny shiny~ Aw man, I love metallic colors! I really want to do some more kits with armor/weapon-parts that can be metallic now! I do have my Monster Hunter ones, but I don't think I'm good enough yet to try those out, so maybe ITEM #59886 next?

A downside of a lot of gold-ish metallic paints is that they look quite similar when applied, so later I opted for making the screws and studs silver.

The first bit of shading on the wings has begun and wow, this was a lot harder than expected because of the huge size of these wings! Now, small kits come with their own challenges, but I do think I prefer smaller ones over this huge 1/7, that is rather like a 1/6.

Probably my favorite part of the kit are the bone/skeleton-parts, as they are really high in sculpt detail, which makes them really easy to shade.

For the finishing of the eyes, I went with a more 'retro' looking idea, as to be honest, this kit's design looks a bit dated, so I thought it fitted rather than the very realistic approach of the official pictures.

Because I used so much very thinned-down and wet paint on the last few parts, this all needed a lot of drying time.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/u_58dlgcH9a8Esdm5HU_q9G2IqNKnT_oqFHmuj-TCWPmwHTGkdO3fbGdE8tc18TZxILalgXEi1hFMLB6p-1MkBjuCzJGFKHCadW4WrGQjVHr1fcDQuhq65a9jJTcwsZRRfdgdz2fsh34lHrHzWrdEtJ68vmIiWgJg75tjI0S3fpM_NF1FLBeo9sCCY4kqQC7bf6OHmdwJhn9auWIdWlZCuCRxbUNRrpOzIOsXA5oBnaFWz5dYl0jCJetZoXGXjjFowNfhis0BfAyUNHl0NeUswRB4zzK_BI8qP0bZtoK5pSRbpwuUlbsaV0vArsBjE7vh9k8uYmLg383xb8ovgPxQVYfe_cSaZWJ3B1adZlLFjexj2KWNZi6oGnoFPjxLi9dbks2ysNZ2vKOnytxKUaWa0R-6100VqHKyooquzYZid_ZUmnrmzeLBzdrgLRjtmRm8GOmHh8OgIW-loq5FEvgd7SfCBgow_udFJOOcd12OumzGxMn07Y1AkcEV30YWMicL7s4OGCvnYLVHib5PGWoZOyl5ELJ0K_yTB3vms88ca65bF4XRrf050DhMlrncyDsUYDavoQtma3WsEJWUxYO6sT3CvJ4RrfCYKVBTpn-5jvZczsb4jhuOcmChS7ShFciJ4a1r0BhkLx3sBz1aKA4sfXFVQB7lo4=w312-h416-no?.jpg

So I focussed on fixing up some smaller parts...

...and finished the face! Well, almost finished, it still needed a few fix-ups here and there (of which I forgot to take a picture later).

https://tinyurl.com/y2m73oqt?.jpg

I always love the point at where the painting of a kit feels close to completion and you can just stare at all the parts to see what needs fixing or more detail.

Looking back on these pictures while writing this blog was a bit weird, as I fully use crocodile clips nowadays to paint my kits, it looks a bit barbaric like this, haha!

Assembly process

Note: Picture quality is back!

https://tinyurl.com/yxhbjyej?.jpg

Now, the figure was finished except for some shading and small finishing touches, so it was time for the assembly! I thought assembly of this figure would be easy as she felt quite sturdy, but it was a bit more of a challenge than expected. This was especially because mulitple of her parts (for example, the wings) were quite heavy and a bit hard to balance at first.

https://tinyurl.com/yxjw7glz?.jpg

As this figure came without a base, I also took it as an interesting challenge to come up with one myself. I thought it would be fun to do something with her name. This is the first rough version of the base.

https://tinyurl.com/y2qahzsc?.jpg

Assembly also came with a couple of mishaps, I unfortunately broke one of her leg pieces when I thought it was putting it in the right place, but apperently forced it a bit too much. Luckily I could glue it with minimal damage showing.

https://tinyurl.com/y4wz9uz2?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/y6ddoz52?.jpg

From now on, every time between pictures was about ~3 days time difference as I was waiting on the drying time and wanted to be sure everything would stick together. The base was made of floral foam and needed a lot of layers of undercoat before it got the plastic-like look and feel.

https://tinyurl.com/y4o7agvl?.jpg

I'm really liking the details on those shoulderplates~

https://tinyurl.com/y2sw26vc?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/y5mptd8b?.jpg

As I didn't really like how her grumpy face turned out, I decided to let her slightly grinning face be the main one where I assemble everything with, instead of making it like they can be switched out. I'm still very pleased with how the eyepatch looks, but as I had to adjust the skin color paint a lot of times, the paint became a bit too thick for my liking. As I have now already started on my next kit, I can luckily say this has improved!

https://tinyurl.com/y5jmao6r?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/yxgjcfc7?.jpg

Once I had the body like this put together and saw her like that, with her new color scheme and those knees bent inwards, I knew the whole dominatrix vibe the original version has would not fit her. This meant I really wanted to drop the idea of the whip and was thinking of what else to put in her hands.

https://tinyurl.com/yyag3bjl?.jpg

A test-fit on her base before I fully undercoat the rest of the base.

https://tinyurl.com/yxzrle8p?.jpg

Getting the shoulderplates to attach well was more work than I initially expected!

https://tinyurl.com/y4b7ygse?.jpg

Prom's body is almost fully together now! In the background I was watching High School Fleet, I thought the series was interesting, but I expected a bit more of it for some reason...

I also made the though choice of 'breaking' the top part of the whip so I could implement a magic staff idea.

https://tinyurl.com/y59d7trn?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/y34564n4?.jpg

For my magic staff, I choose a colorful bead from the bead collection I have lying around for cosplay purposes. I made a small point sticking out, that would get painted later.

https://tinyurl.com/y6pgvgb8?.jpg

At the same time, I also started attaching Prom's wings.

https://tinyurl.com/y46ruffg?.jpg

The base had gone through many layers of undercoat now and also was getting close to being ready to get painted!

https://tinyurl.com/y2rf3l85?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/y5b2v48k?.jpg

The magic staff was a nice fit, just like I hoped!

Final shading and assembly

https://tinyurl.com/yxvdxypb?.jpg

Now even more fun parts came around! It was time to start with the pastel shading and to decide for a color of Prom's base! It was a hard choice, but after comparing all colors I decided to go with gold, as it fit with her shiny armor parts and also makes the legs stand out more.

https://tinyurl.com/y48rxng3?.jpg

With the pastels, I ended up keeping it quite simple, but adding some special touches. Prom got a bit more color on her cheeks.

https://tinyurl.com/yytsy7hu?.jpg

It's a bit hard to catch on camera, but I made some dark blue shading around her knees and wrinkles in the boots.

https://tinyurl.com/yysfyvqb?.jpg

And here is the finished golden base!

https://tinyurl.com/y2crxdrw?.jpg

Now to attach Prom to it and after that give her a final topcoating to seal the paints...and this lady is finished!

https://tinyurl.com/y2f35zkz?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/y5utxs9c?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/yy2jrxt3?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/y2t9pwsk?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/y4akn7sl?.jpg

There are already a lot of things I would have done differently looking at the final result of the kit, but I was definitely pleased with how the color combination turned out!

Final product

I decided to have a mini-photoshoot with my Prom, I hope you will enjoy the results!

I cringe a bit with such close-ups, but luckily my paint thinning has already gotten a lot better, changing brands has helped a lot!

https://tinyurl.com/y5w5xr2a?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/yy7rmbsh?.jpg

I'm still a bit indifferent about her base. It was a good idea, but I'm not 100% happy with the execution, it will do for now.

https://tinyurl.com/y5d7qxwu?.jpg

You can't completely get the dominatrix vibe out of her!

https://tinyurl.com/yxu3b6r4?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/y6bt7olf?.jpg

https://tinyurl.com/y5gn2a6j?.jpg

Probably her best angle!

And to finish it!

The things I have learned that I'm definitely keeping with me for future kits:
- The shading-trick and how to make better use of the details in the sculpt the figure has.
- It's OK that if you don't like something in a GK's design, to just...alter it to make it what you want!
- Better quality topcoat gives for a better quality result, so I won't be touching my cheaper ones anymore.

The things I have learned and what will definitely go better with my next kit:
- Higher quality materials will be used. I can't press this enough! I'm actually a bit embarrassed that I have fiddled around for so long with these materials. This kit could have been a lot better if I had used the paints I am using today.
- Better paint thinning and mixing: Fixing small errors and the final result being with less streaks (the streaks are the most bothersome for me with this kit).
- Don't wait with most of the shading until the end after assembly.
- Test some more around with another method to make eyes.

https://tinyurl.com/y3ohggbq?.jpg

I have not decided yet how/where I will display her and if I will keep her, but for now I put her together with my most recently finished kit, Yurie.

https://tinyurl.com/y52rv6cu?.jpg

Prom is so big!

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next blog is probably going to be a review again, I'm not sure about which figure yet!

If you want to see the other kits I have made (and my road in progress), you can check out their blogs here:

Finished almost 8 years ago Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann - Yoko Littner - 1/7 (Cherry Blossom): ITEM #22924

As you can see, my building speed is quite slow, with a bit less than one a year. I am stepping up the pace and currently also working on more kits at the same time. This is because I have quite some purchased kits still lying around here and I'm really motivated to get to them, as I really feel like I'm getting better with each one. :) Although I am not close to the end yet of course! There is always so much to learn in this hobby!

Sneak preview

A sneak preview for my first airbrushed kit ITEM #12293 I am working on now, I'm very happy with how the progress is going so far and will also write an extensive blog when he is finished!

Thank you for uploading this blog. You did a nice job with the colorscheme you choose. The fun thing about it is that your version brings out more villain characteristics than the official does. I agree with what you wrote: The shading you have done looks very nice. The wings, gloves and bone parts are definitely my favorite parts of this figure.

A very interesting kit that I've never seen before, although I can't quite figure out what kind of creature she is supposed to be. The "suggested" pink and black color scheme with the black wings suggests a dark angel, but then the horns suggest she is a devil, but the horns are more like what you'd find on a minotaur or a similar creature...

In any event, GK blogs are always interesting to read. I wish I was patient enough to do a kit of my own.

Act (7 days ago) #63355473Drive-by advice: Prime porous surfaces like foam or wood with a gesso first, then do the paint primer! You'll get a more even surface for the spray primer since gesso are thicker and designed to smooth out surfaces.
Always enjoy these! Thanks for posting :>

It actually has 3/4 of gesso-like undercoat material (didn't really cover it a lot in the blog as the base was more of an afterthought and the main focus the figure). I guess this kind of foam is just not really meant to have such details on like the name Prom here. I already selected a higher quality foam for the base of my Lelouch, which is looking better although it still being in progress. Still appreciate you dropping the tip, though! :) And thanks for liking the blog!

Marshmallowpie (8 days ago) #63330659It's interesting how much changing the colour scheme can change the figure, it works really well. The bone parts turned out awesome.
Lelouch looks nice too, looking forward to it.

Yeah, even in the original colors, they always felt a bit unfitting to me, so it was nice to just have no reference at all and go wild with painting this kit. :)

The bone parts are my favorite as well and working on Lelouch is going pretty smooth, I'm looking forward to sharing that progress later. :)

YarnYotsugi (8 days ago) #63330662Wow! You did an AMAZING job! Super impressive! I love the face, hair, skull parts, colors... WAIT... I just love everything! I can't wait to see your progress over time. I hope you keep posting! Have fun and keep up the good work!

Ahaha, you're making me blush! Thanks for liking it so much! I have been getting more active with GK's, but have less time for blogging, so I'm not sure how soon I'll have something new to share, but I'll keep on creating. :)

Redliger (8 days ago) #63347040Nice work as always. Keep it up! :)

Thank you very much! :D Same for you, I hope you have time soon to work on kits some more as well. :)
