FGO - Jeanne d'Arc (Alter) - 1/7 - Dress Ver. (Max Factory)FGO - Jeanne d'Arc (Alter) - 1/7 - Dress Ver. (Max Factory)

Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review!

Today I’ll be taking a closer look at ITEM #603996 the Avenger class servant Jeanne d'Arc Alter (or Jalter for short) from the popular mobile game Fate/Grand Order brought to us by Max Factory. This figure depicts Jalter wearing the dress she wore during the Shinjuku Singularity in the game.
But since I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, I’ll leave it at that and just get on with the review. ⊂( ・ ̫・)⊃

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Jalter comes in a ridiculously large and massive box made of heavy cardboard. The theme of the box is rather dark with different shades of violet and blue setting the tone. Blurred streetlights (maybe reminiscent of Shinjuku) and pictures of the figure on almost every side (barring top and bottom) are the sole decorations here, but they create a nice mood anyway. Large windows can be found on the front, top and side of the box allowing us to catch a glimpse of the figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563812744.jpeg
The blister is very tight from the get-go and an additional wire was used to keep it together (which I had already removed before taking the picture…). I personally don’t think the wire was necessary nor do I like that in general (was a huge pain to get off), but well.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The figure comes in 2 parts: main body and base with no instruction sheet (not that one is needed here).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563812754.jpeg
Btw her head is detachable making Jalter look like a vengeful ghost (not that far off if you think about it). View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563812766.jpeg
~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The base is a huge disc (with a diameter of roughly 19,5cm) and a real space-hog. Black plastic is framing what looks like red velvet (I doubt it’s actual velvet though). A single plastic wedge with a short metal peg is supposed to hold the figure in place and once you mount her onto the base the fear begins….
This figure is extremely heavy, especially the hair, yet the only point of contact with the base is that little wedge which doesn’t even fill the part of her sole to the heel. When you move the figure around, she’ll immediately start to wobble. Even when you place her back close to a wall it won’t give her the much-needed additional support because the base is so huge that ot keeps her hair from touching the wall. Sometimes I really wonder what manufacturers are thinking constructing figures the way they do ABS or not…
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563812783.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563812791.jpeg
Yet I doubt leaning will be the main issue with this figure and its weight distribution but I do see that slender ankle breaking in the future…

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~

I love her facial expression, it turned out a lot better than I initially expected. They really nailed her icy and somewhat annoyed gaze. (●´□`)♡ View spoilerHide spoilerhttp://img1.ak.crunchyroll.com/i/spire3/041e6139d15b0c7a5a2fa163fc2455af1522906056_full.png

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563812919.jpeg

The purple flower accessory she’s wearing looks good from a certain distance and the shading on the petals is indeed nice. Upon closer inspection however the paintjob on the pearls and silver parts dangling down seems a bit careless and the flower could’ve used a bit more definition.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563812933.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563812942.jpeg

Now, I both love and hate her hair. On the one hand it’s cascading down like a lush waterfall of silver with a beautiful pearlescent finish and ever so soft violet highlights. It has a lot of volume with stray strands swirling around her curling at the tips. On the other hand, the assembly looks so sloppy in places that it makes me a bit angry. The seams are ugly and wonky (the top of her head being particularly bad) and the glued-in strands bother me too. I get that with a mane like that there was no way to do it in one piece, but couldn’t they have exercised at least a little more care assembling it? (ఠ్ఠ ˓̭ ఠ్ఠ)

Also, as I said before, Jalter’s hair is incredibly heavy messing up the weight distribution. It wouldn’t have bothered me if it was touching the base (it’s very rigid so I doubt it’d loose its shape in any way because of it) or if there was a small support rod for it…

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Before saying anything about the tiny little elephant in the room Jalter has a fully sculpted collarbone largely hidden by the red ribbon she’s wearing around her neck. Said ribbon has some nice shading going for it, but the sculpt could be improved (the knot would’ve bben better if it was more pronounced).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813018.jpeg

The dress looks a lot bluer than I expected with only a slight hint of purple in it (though it also depends on the light). I like the glimmering finish that accentuates her bodyline. Jalter is one of the curvier servants around, but the dress with its cut-out and huge back neckline makes her look slenderer (the dark blue also contrasts nicely with her light skin). She has an ample cleavage to show, but the way her chest is pressed upward almost looks painful. Besides since there are no straps (aside from the one running along her back) the question how her chest does that presents itself (hooray for gravity defying boobs, I guess x3).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813035.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813047.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813063.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813073.jpeg
The way the dress hugs her body is very flattering. Obviously, the fabric is heavy and thick since the folds aren’t too sharp and deep, plus certain body parts aren’t showing under the fabric.

Partly hidden behind her massive hair is a nice bit of body sculpt as Jalter has both defined arm pits and a ver lovely back with her shoulder blades and spine showing.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813081.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813089.jpeg
On a side note: Jalter’s skin has a slightly soft finish, not as good as what Alter or Flare use, but it still feels pleasant to the touch.

Her gloves have a slightly semi-transparent look to them and softly cut into her upper arms. The shading is spot-on, especially around the elbows and fingers with small creases adding to the realistic impression.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813097.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813105.jpeg
Jalter’s fingers also look surprisingly slender and feminine.

The black strap running from her hip to the rim of her dress looks a bit wonky if you look really closely, but not to bad. Plus, the creases in the dress warp that impression anyway. The dress has a huge cut-out at the side of the skirt only covered by a small peplum that’s held in place by the aforementioned strap. Since she is taking a huge step the skirt is flowing and crinkling as part of the motion.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813115.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813125.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813143.jpeg

The way her skirt swirls around her butt is very alluring, it’s a real pity that part is usually covered by her hair.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813153.jpeg

As for the peplum… well, the seam at the back of the dress where you have two layers of fabric looks a bit rough and unclean. Yet it gets better the more you let your view wander to the side.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813163.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813173.jpeg
OK, this is as good an opportunity as it gets, so I’ll just say it….
I like the rich red used for the inside of her skirt, but it irks me that the red used for the base doesn’t match in color. In fact, I think they clash quite badly. This may be a matter of debate, but imo picking another color (dark blue for example) or even passing on the velvet thing altogether and instead opt for a marble-like base (maybe even a dark hue) would’ve been way better than what we got.

NSFW…
View spoilerHide spoilerNow, with the dress being the way it is it almost “invites” us to take a look under it, but the panties are surprisingly simple. The color and finish match the dress, but otherwise they’re pretty unremarkable.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813185.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813196.jpeg

Jalter’s legs look gorgeous, there’s no other way to describe them. The calves in particular curve nicely and the see-trough stockings really add something. Their rims dig into her thighs while the shading and creases add definition on the knees, rims and ankles. I also like the stretched look in other areas.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813207.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813217.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813228.jpeg

As for the footwear… she is wearing simple pumps featuring the same glimmering finish and tone as the dress. The design is as simple as it gets but well-executed regardless.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813240.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
So, last but not least some size comparisons…
Jalter’s character height is listed as 159cm and this figure reaches a height of roughly 25,5cm (excluding the base). Well… she is supposed to be a 1/7 scale or at least that's what all shops list her at (though apparently GSC themselves changed it to 1/6 on their site while stating the wrong height for her that is...). For a 1/7 scale that height is definitely too much. Even with her tiptoe pose she is leaning backwards, so it’d probably still be the same height if she was standing upright. I didn’t really want to bother with 1/8 scales since it seems pointless, but Aoba ITEM #549359 can usually be displayed with normal 1/7 scales…. and he gets dwarfed by the dragon witch…
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813255.jpeg

A small 1/7 figure like ITEM #549592 fares even worse...
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813262.jpeg

Now I wanted to display this Jalter together with Saber Alter ITEM #287683 (even before I knew how much sense that makes story-wise), which is a regular 1/7 and ITEM #464791 with no scale given, but slightly bigger than 1/7. Sadly, I think they both look a little awkward next to Jalter and looking at them in my Detolf too, makes me feel uncomfortable (maybe I’ll get used to it… hopefully….)

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813294.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563799962.jpeg

Jin-Lian ITEM #718982 is one of my few 1/6 figures and somehow the only one that doesn’t look out of place (if you don’t count the ugly contrast of yet another shade of red).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1563813304.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Soooo, this figure is kind of a mixed bag for me. There are some things I really like apart from it being a figure of a character I’m fond of, but the qc on the hair, the base and the very real fear of her breaking unless I find an additional way to support her weight bother me immensely. Plus, her being a 1/7 scale was a very major selling point for me, since I desperately wanted to display her with ITEM #287683 and now they look so awkward together. At this point I can’t say if I’ll keep or sell her, but I’ll definitely mull over it for a while.

That's it for this review! Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it! ^^
If you don’t mind, I’d love some constructive criticism,
but if you don’t feel like posting any your thoughts on the figure are also very welcome. :3
Also, if there's anything in my collection you'd like to see a review of feel free to shoot me a message or something.^^

Wow! Great review !! Very detailed!

I agree with your opinions. I am very worried about her ankle, it's possible that I make a support to prevend an excessive tension, but it bothers me... I have paid a lot of money!! Too much money! NY, refound my money!
I will send a formal complaint to the address you provided.
Of course, your Jalter looks better manufactured than mine. Quality control is getting worse. You can't trust even Max Factory.

Nice, just don't get burn off from work and keep relaxing when you need it :3.
Oh cool, yeah Azur Lane is pretty friendly gacha game the most generous I have ever played. I stopped mostly because I was bored with the gameplay it was always the same, but also you must do your dailies everyday, I end up doing as a chores and not enjoying playing, I have also whale a bit too :3, so now I feel really better after stopped the game I'm sticking with the figures only haha ^^.
It never turns out like that though. :/
Nah, I've got a new job a month ago and I love it, besides it's just a part-time job, so the risk of me burning out is nigh zero.
Yeah, the game play gets repetitive after a while and the sheer number of events almost forces you to keep playing beyond the point where it's fun (that and the dailys ofc). Because of that I thought a clean break would be better and it was. Still love the character designs, so I'll pick up some more figures as well. :3

spinners_grove (1 month ago) #64314982Great review--very informative. It's a shame that she didn't quite live up to the pre-release hype though. (Especially for that price.) It seems to me like at least the stability was an easy fix. I'm a huge proponent of incorporating stabilizing elements into a figure's design, and it seems kind of obvious in this case that the floor-length hair could've been used in that way. All they had to do was put a peg in one or two of the big strands and boom--no more stability issues. That's just my take on it though?
I will say that I think she looks nice with Saber Alter; unless you really start analyzing it, Saber just looks like she's more petite than Jeanne, rather than disproportional. On the other hand, I'm kind of a stickler for that stuff as well, so I get your frustration.
Thank you! :3
I get the feeling that a lot of figures don't these days, but maybe that's just me.
Ikr? I mean support pegs can look awful, but in this case they'd be barely noticeable. Or they could've simply made the hair a bit longer so it reaches the base and put an invisible peg there...

Saber is actually 5cm smaller as a character but if they were both the same scale the difference would still be less. I got kinda used to it by now, though that'll probably always remain at the back of my head (+the weird way GSC handled that).
I couldn't even arrange my display the way I wanted to because of her unexpected height. -_-

broken-Toybox (1 month ago) #64311789Hmmm, tbh that doesn't sound all that bad (though I'd need to see pcis to make sure), but perfection is certainly not something I've seen on any figure so far.
Nah, we can continue, my mood wasn't really affected by it, though I had to sleep and work. x3
I stopped Azur Lane a few days ago too. It's not that I spent a ton of money on it though (just to get a bigger dock and rings). What made yout stop playing? Or was it the whaling?

JAE9 (1 month ago) #64268220Thanks for the detailed review. I was planning on getting this one, but decided not to. A few other people also said it wobbles so I am afraid it may break easily. When I first saw the figure a few months ago I just kind of assumed the hair would touch the base to support everything, but that turned out to not be the case. Thanks for the compliment, I'm glad to be of help. :3
Yeah, I've had a talk with a friend about that some days ago and we had the idea that companies do stuff like this because they know they'll do a rerelease anyway and want people to buy her again if she broke. The hair not touching the ground bothers me as well and I'm thinking about possibilities for additional support (w/o damaging the base or the hair), but no useful ideas so far...

I'm not really aware of the delays for the nendos but yeah it's not bright for us xD.
Soory :( we should stop there, your mood is going downhill because of me haha :'(
Good Job lol, when I play a gacha game I can't stop whaling, but now since I stopped Azur Lane it gone better in terms of self-control xD.
I see, I expected that but I wouldn't use DHL because it so expensive for me lol, I only use SAL for shipping, pretty much thanks for the clarification ^^.

Nendos themselves are getting delayed more often too (worst I remember was probably Nanachi), maybe they should just slow down for once. -_-
That's the best way to handle it, I always read comments of people being disappointed about delays and while I get that I got a don't-really-care-I'll-get-it-eventually attitude (else I would go crazy).
The more we talk about it the more wasted potential I see here. :/
Those are some wise words and it's not like there's a lack of Fate content to keep yourself busy. x3 I'm actually quite proud of myself for not spending money on FGO for more than a year now.
Take it with a grain of salt though, that's only how it works in Germany, it's probably different in other countries. That'd be great, but I feel like LE figures are getting increasingly more common, so I doubt regular shops will ever carry Native figures and the like.

Fallency (1 month ago) #64266440Yes pretty much very disappointed :(, same goes for Vira.
I don't know about the nendos, but still I think it had impacted the production time for other projects :(.
Yeah at this point I'm not even couting how much months it delayed xD, I just spare the money I have to pay for each figure when they get delayed xD.
a cast-off Jalter would be so awesome :'> haha (need that bacc c:)
I know, my friend spent way too much money on FGO and told me to avoid this game If you don't want to become homeless xD, I only enjoy and buy figures, and goodies when it boils down to Fate stuff.
I see thanks for the explanation for DHL, I would give it a try :p, I really hope one day they get the limited/exclusive stuff from other shops like Native and it will be so nice :3.
