How do people get their figures? How do people get their figures?

I use a lovely lady who lives in Japan who is a personal shopper, she’s really sweet and helps me out but she won’t be doing that forever. I was wondering how people get their figures? If I can I would like to try to avoid customs (I’m from the UK so any other brits who see this please help).
I’m especially interested with expensive figures because I hate to pay customs for that, the fees are ridiculous so I avoid that.
Thank you, please be polite and respectful and any advice is great. Even if you think someone else has answered this question please give your own answer.

songtantan (2 months ago) #65159816I feel your pain.
The nendoroid I bought from US costed 40 USD + 20 USD shipping (so about 80 CAD)
I got slapped 30 CAD (FEDEX Fee) + 6.XX CAD Tax.
And lets not forget that lovely paypal FX rate.

Wohaa thats even worse O.o
Kind of disproportionately^^

There are so many extra costs. They are nearly as high as a whole nendoroid (9€ shipping + 16 € taxes/import fee for an 30€ nendoroid^^)

songtantan (2 months ago) #65145957You can add a note when you order.
Directly state, please undervalue to 1500yen. (which is about 20 CAD)
If you don't provide the specific amount, BiJ randomly undervalues (will not be below the threshold level)
Typically, small box slips by customs for me (from japan).
The bigger orders have chance to get caught.
So far 1 (out of at least 20) package from japan was caught by custom. (but it was my friend's order, so she paid an extra $16)
1 of my order (out of my 1 order) from us was caught by custom.
I fought tooth and nail off that FedEx charge.

Ayanah (2 months ago) #65082070How do you undervalue when ordering from Big In Japan?
Is there a field/bar when ordering or do you have to write them?
I am quite new to this^^

Our threshold is 20 CAD.
But usually for item send from Japan, if we use SAL then it slips through custom most of the time. EMS is caught often but through CP the handling cost is about 10~ + tax.
I use BigInJapn and ask to undervalue to 20 CAD.
Alternatively, AmiAmi and hope for the best.
Sending from USA is completely different, it seems that the US carrier auto clears it for custom ( with an outrageous 29.99 handing fee + our normal tax which is 13%).

timeless54 (2 months ago) #64958581I thought Canada's threshold was 60 CAD? Or has that been changed as of recent?

60 is if item is marked as gift from family and friends.

20 is if item is purchased goods.

If it's a new figure, I preorder directly from the manufacturer or their favorite official outlet. Won't lie, the shipping is... ugh. I think the most I've ever paid for international shipping was $70. But once the figure arrives, I'm so happy I forget all about about that sting.

If it's a figure that already exists, I look around Ebay and pay close attention to the tells of a legit figure. I've been lucky enough not to get any bootlegs, but the risk is always there.

I ship to a PO Box that I use for internet orders for a variety of reasons instead of just shipping to my home address.
