10 Count - Kurose Riku - B-style - 1/8 (FREEing)10 Count - Kurose Riku - B-style - 1/8 (FREEing)

Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review!

This review may be very slightly NSFW and if you don’t like figures of male characters, you’re in the wrong place anyway, so….

This time I’ll be taking a look at ITEM #638637 Riku Kurose from the popular Manga 10 Count brought to us by FREEing. Both him and ITEM #638638 were highly anticipated figures for me both for being male bunnies and for being from a manga I really like. Thus, preordering was a no-brainer for me but the first user pictures of him really got me worried. Anyway, let’s see if those thoughts were justified or not.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
As usual the first thing we look at is the box and while I’m not against more simple designs this is very~ basic…
The overall box design is black with very few gold and turquoise colored decorations. One of the sides features the illustration the figure is based on next to one of the windows that can be found on several sides of the box. The windows are framed which gives them a nice touch, but otherwise there’s not really much to say here. As with most boxes though there are some shots showing the figure from different angles (especially on the back). Ofc, a simple box design is fitting here seeing how the figure isn’t the most elaborate one, but they didn’t really put much effort into it.

Only 2 parts for the figure: main body and base making the assembly as easy as can be.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373538.jpeg

Now, I don’t mind a simple base that doesn’t detract from the figure, but I absolutely hate these shiny bases and they’re the worst in black. In theory this might be a nice classy idea, yet in reality they’re just annoying. They’re absurdly prone to get scratched and you see every little fingerprint on them right away (not to mention little specks of dust).

While I like Kurose’s smug expression and the ever so slight grin with the sidewards glance I feel like something is not quite right here. Yet contrary to some comments I’ve read before I don’t think it’s his eyes being misaligned (though that seems to be a flaw others encountered).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373597.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373609.jpeg

His hair looks ok from the front, the lack of shading is a pity but kinda understandable since he has black hair. Once you take a closer look from different angles though that’s the least of your worries. Kurose’s hair is always a bit messy so ofc there are a lot of stray strands but often times they look clunky and not cleanly parted partly because of those small bubbles (not sure if they’re from the paint or excess bits of plastic). The seam at the top of his head also looks wonky and depending on the light the shinier finish they used for his hair may look a little tacky.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373620.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373629.jpeg

But if you feel like his hair is “lacking” something, the bunny ears are worse as they’re absolutely flat. The paint is but the sculpt is too. Sure, they bend, but there’s no inside of the ear (not even an implied seam), no real creases, just nothing at all to give them any sort of structure.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373638.jpeg
There should be a limit to simplicity imo…

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Further down we can see Kurose’s well-toned body, from the collarbone and neck tendons to his chest and abs and navel, the sculpt here looks great (drool-inducing even). After using different lights and various angles I’m pretty sure there is no shading though. The sculpt alleviates that to some degree ofc, but it would’ve been nice regardless. At the very least they gave him nipples and in a different hue to boot (that this is something remarkable for a male figure is a bit sad though).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373649.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373662.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373672.jpeg

His clothes look pretty basic, in a meh~ way. While I love the idea of the tailcoat and unbuttoned shirt the execution is lackluster. Again, the paint is totally flat, the silver buttons aren’t cleanly painted and there are even scratches on his back. The shirt too has no shading (I get that for the tailcoat as black is a bit difficult in that regard, but the shirt?), the implied button holes and seam at the rim aren’t anything to write home about either. Yet the bow tie dangling down is neat. Plus, I do like the sculpt on the tailcoat. The fabric crinkles nicely and the seams look good as well. It can’t completely alleviate the lack of paint gradients, but it could be worse.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373722.jpeg
The bunny tail looks kinda cute and nicely sculpted, albeit a bit weird since it’s attached to the coat.

Kurose holding the crop looks great and the shiny gloves are a nice feature (again there are small bubbles, yet you won’t really notice them unless you get really close). You can even see his tendons and on his wrists. The crop itself is slightly bent (ready for some action ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)). The handle looks particularly good imo.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373733.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373741.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373750.jpeg

Well, the paint on his suspenders is meh~ but what’s bugging me more is that there’s no visible rim/seam on his pants.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373757.jpeg

Bit of a pity this is hidden by the tails. X3
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373773.jpeg

Overall the trousers look fine to me, but the lack of a rim at the top and no visible button (or anything really) is still bothering me. Still, the fabric crinkles nicely (again).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373780.jpeg
The gap between his right leg and the shoe is kinda weird however, closing that off would’ve definitely been better. Not sure if Kurose is supposed to wear white socks or if it’s a flaw, but I really don’t want to see that.

The shoes themselves are pretty simple with a lacquered finish (thankfully my copy has them both equally shiny). Things like the sole, heel and seam at the back add a nice touch to the rather basic design.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373788.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Last but not least some size comparisons...
Kurose is supposed to be a 1/8 scale and reaches a height of around 23,5cm (excluding base and bunny ears) meaning he’d be around 188cm. Even for male characters that seems a bit much, but I couldn’t find his exact height so it’s kinda whatever.
He certainly looks good next to other 1/8 scales such as ITEM #396969 & ITEM #549359 and even big characters like ITEM #236266 are no problem (though let’s be honest, most of us will display him with Shirotani anyway).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373796.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373810.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373818.jpeg

Some 1/7 figures like ITEM #163750 would work as well, though depending on the type it may also start to look off (like ITEM #604756).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373826.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373834.jpeg

Well, I just couldn’t resist (she’s looking way too happy though x3), ITEM #549589 is an unscaled figure.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373840.jpeg

1/6 figures are where the scales stop looking good next to each other.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565373850.jpeg
Btw ITEM #604109 is a sad reminder of how differently male and female bunny figures are treated.

So, this is a bit of a tough one for me. I love Ten Count and Kurose and I really want to like this figure, so I do. Yet I’m far from being impressed. I expected nothing great considering FREEing’s reputation when it comes to smaller scales and definitely no perfection, but for a delayed, and quite frankly, very simple figure, the flaws are too many. The flat paintjob is not great, but at least the sculpt is mostly good and he sure doesn’t look as bad as on the first pictures I’ve seen. However, I still think this figure is lacking. As I said, I like him despite that, but I don’t think you’re really getting your money’s worth. I won't be preordering any other male FREEing bunnies, at least not from shops that don't allow cancellations.

That's it for this review! Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it! ^^
If you don’t mind, I’d love some constructive criticism,
but if you don’t feel like posting any your thoughts on the figure are also very welcome. :3
If there's anything else in my collection you'd like to see a review of feel free to shoot me a message or something.^^

SkaylerOtakuCat (13 days ago) #65225185Really nice review! And I agree, the total design and ideo of the figure is great! Sculp is okay too, but pait job is really lacking. Expecially on shading. I think shirotani will be better painted, on white shading is more visible. But with kurose, I am dissapointed, expecially because freeing is known to be such a good companyThank you! :3
I do wonder if Shirotani will actually look better when it comes to the paint, from what I've heard FREEing is good when it comes to the 1/4 bunnies (or 1/4 scales in general) but quite lacking with smaller scales. Ofc I do hope I'm wrong in that regard, but I don't expect a stellar paintjob.

AshuriiKareshi (14 days ago) #65202879I actually cancelled my order for him just before his release.
I kind of lost my excitement for him I guess because I'm in the process of looking to buy a house. In the end that was more important to me so I wanted to save the £100.
But after seeing some pictures I'm glad I did. I mean he does look like a good figure but theres so many details that just make him look like he hasn't gone through any of the finishing touches. You pretty much confirmed everything as well (like the hair looks a bit chucky, there's no shading on the body etc).
It's such a shame they didn't give him that bit more detail otherwise he would have been perfect ;n;
Thank you for your review. ~
Thanks for your comment! :3
Well, unless you love him as a character or can't live without a male bunny in your collection I don't think you miss out on much by skipping him. Especially considering that you've got more important stuff to worry about (can kinda relate to that since I had to cancel a bulk of preorders earlier this year for certain reasons).
Ofc he doesn't look bad per se, but it feels like his production was rushed (despite the delays) and they skipped a large part of the QC (though FREEing has a reputation about not being great with anything besides their 1/4 bunnies, so maybe this is normal).

broken-Toybox (14 days ago) #65202786Plus, 1/7 may be easier to manufacture than detailed 1/8 figures (or so I hope at least). And I just love him too much to pass tbh.
The other bunnies, well... I'm worried about them too seeing how Kurose turned out and how they're more detailed.

Yep, but I really love Ten Count too much that I would buy the figures even though.

broken-Toybox (14 days ago) #65202289Yeah, he certainly does look ok from a distance, but seeing how this isn't a cheap hobby I'm kinda expecting a bit more than just that.
No, a chessboard base wouldn't make sense thematically either, but I'd have preferred the base to be more matte as that would nearly eliminate all criticism I had there. Ofc, they couldn't make anything super elaborate either since it'd detract from the figure. I don't think the price is justified either, as someone on the comments put it this feels "like a glorified prize figure" and yeah, the bonus kinda is like a consolation. -_-
Yeah, it's sad to see they didn't even try, I wonder how this would've been if OR had handled him instead.
That's what I gathered as well and it actually makes me worried for ITEM #604018, which I just can't pass up unless the promo pictures look absolutely atrocious. -_-

evenstar88 (14 days ago) #65202648Thanks for the review! I remembered seeing this figure online and thinking what a sexy thing he was (despite me not knowing the character or series), so it's very nice to read a review on him.
It's a shame about the bunny ears and the pants - a more refined bunny ear design would definitely be expected of a line featuring bunny figures, and I agree with you about how plain they are. And the pants too... those are not very nice.
I think the paintjob is pretty good and rather suited to the colour - much shading cannot be done for black and companies usually compensate with sculpting of the clothing folds and I think it's pretty good on this figure.
Overall, I actually think it's a very good-looking figure and would make good eye candy on display (as long as you don't scrutinize him very closely XD)
Thanks for your comment! :3
Can't deny that he's sexy, if he wasn't I would already be selling him. x3
Yeah, the ears (is it too much to ask for some fluff inside?) and pants in particular feel like they didn't really try.
The paintjob is ok, considering most parts on this figure are black, but the skin and shirt at least would've done well with some gradients.
Scrutinizing is what I feel I have to do for a review though. x3
Ofc, he'll be fine in my display and I won't really dwell on my complaints I guess.

Emboar500 (14 days ago) #65201803Thank you for making an honest review of bunny boy Kurose Riku by FREEing, I looking forward to many pictures of this figure to see their quality if they're worthy to buy it, though I actually don't PO him but planning to get Junta and Takato soon.
The sculpt overall is really good, from the clothes folding to his (sexy) body, and I think the paint is just finely matted instead of putting a lot of gradient. My only worries is those bubble-like stuffs on his hair and other parts.
But overall, he is really a good and fine scale figure as what I see on your pictures. Hope FREEing improves on their next bunny boys, probably the Dakaichii ones, and I'm still motivated to get the Dakaichii bunny boys soon after I read your reviews.
Anyway thank you again and also I like your reviews. :)
Thank you so much! :3
I sure hope they improve the quality on the other bunnies even if I won't buy them. The sculpts look more elaborate too, so there's more potential for flaws.
The sculpt is good (excluding the hair) but the paint isn't all that matte, it's subtly shiny (maybe to enhance the sculpt), but I personally would've preferred it more matte and with soft gradients.
