Fate/Apocrypha - Astolfo - 1/7 - Seihai Sensou (Aniplex)Fate/Apocrypha - Astolfo - 1/7 - Seihai Sensou (Aniplex)

Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review!

Today I’ll be taking a look at ITEM #624644 Astolfo (aka Kuro no Rider or Rider of Black) from Fate/Apocrypha (and FGO ofc) brought to us by Aniplex. Now, I really have a soft spot for Astolfo for being a bit ridiculous (and also downright adorable), so I’m always happy if a promising figure of him is announced and this was no exception. Anyway, without further ado let’s get to the actual review.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Starting off with the box… or better boxes since I’ve got the bonus base as well…
Astolfo comes in a black box adorned with dark red accents that serve as a background for the gold lettering. There’s also part of a summoning circle as well as plenty of pictures on the box, but overall, it’s a rather simple, yet fitting, design. A large front window allows a good look at the figure, yet the same can’t be said for the ones on the side and top. One side features the artwork the figure is based on, in the Apocrypha style, which I actually prefer over the one used in FGO. The back, apart from numerous shots of the figure contains the usual warnings and other product information. As for the bonus base, that one comes in a plain cardboard box without anything remarkable to it. Both boxes are held together by a see-through plastic belt, similar to what they did for ITEM #414719.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429287.jpeg
The blisters are nothing special, but they do their job.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
All in all, there are 7 parts for the figure: the main body, 2 bases, the lance + its handle and 2 plastic support rods (one for each base). The most you’ll be using is 5 of those parts though.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429295.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429305.jpeg
We also get an instruction sheet in Japanese with a bare minimum of (frankly unneeded) translations.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The standard base for this is a plain elliptic piece of black plastic (thankfully matte) with 4 short metal pegs you can attach the figure too. Since this is a very plain base this marks the last time you’ll be seeing it in this review. X3
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429313.jpeg

Now for the other base…
I really like the sculpt and color gradients on this one, with the crevices it really looks like rock. The sign on the base, with his name and source (in case you forgot x3) is actually a nice feature. Kinda reminds me of a museum piece or the type of figure that’s generally above my budget. This base too has the short metal pegs holding the figure (you may need and extra push or two to fully insert them).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429321.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429331.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429340.jpeg

The hole for his lance’s handle is shaped in a way that allows only one way to connect them so watch out for that.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429353.jpeg
Anyway, Astolfo’s Trap of Argalia (the irony of that name) is really impressive piece spanning roughly 32cm (yeah, this figure needs some space). I love how faithfully the recreated the little decorations and the different hues of gold look gorgeous (so does the pearlescent white finish on the lance).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429361.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429370.jpeg

Well, as for the support rod…. I’m actually not sure where it belongs since there’s no hole in any base for it and no hint on the instruction sheet. My guess however is that it’s supposed to hold the lance in place. Both because there’s a round crevice in the rock base where it fits and because the lance is heavy and drops significantly without the rod.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429377.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Spin around...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429395.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429402.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429421.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429440.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429448.jpeg
His battle pose sure looks gorgeous and dynamic.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Now this is something you don’t see all that often, Astolfo with a serious and confident battle expression (and I love it). I think they nailed it perfectly, from the eyes down to his fang showing. The flat part in the middle of his mouth was something I needed to get used to though.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429460.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429471.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429485.jpeg

His hair too is well defined, all the stray strands look true to the illustration with shading adding some more depth to the sculpt. The hair is blowing in wind in the heat of battle and enforces the dynamic impression. There’s a small bit of excess plastic on his white hair strand, but I only noticed it up close and it should pose no problem to remove it.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429494.jpeg
The 2 black ribbons as always add a bit of cuteness and I like how well they’re defined, Plus, you can see bits of his hair being pulled into them. The seam on the top of his head where the different hair parts where connected looks pretty clean too, no complaints here.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429505.jpeg
As for his braid, I can’t exactly make out how it was braided but I still like the sculpt, the subtle highlights and the ribbon at the end.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429512.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Further down we can see gold applications on Astolfo’s armor (the lion looks particularly good) as well as a golden cord holding his cape together. Overall the gold parts are very cleanly done, barring the ones below the lion (though the mess-up is hardly visible for various reasons).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429525.jpeg

Now, the fur trim on his cloak doesn’t exactly look realistic with the very pointy ends but it is well-done and in lieu with the artwork. Zooming in really closely you’ll find some rough edges and excess bits of plastic, but no normal viewing distance will show you that.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429536.jpeg

I really love what they did to his cape overall. It’s got so much movement and creases fantastically. The brown gradients actually make it look a little dirty on top of accentuating the sculpt, which is neat (especially in combination with the rock base).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429543.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429552.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429562.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429577.jpeg
The shading on the inside looks great too.

It’s almost a pity Astolfo’s armor is mostly hidden behind the lance since it’s fairly nicely done, the creases and seams in particular. The girths on his sleeves look good too (one of the very few instances where I’ve seen buckles cleanly painted).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429588.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429599.jpeg

On his gauntlets we can find bits of white and black paint bleeding into each other, which are mostly invisible as his weapon will hide that, but still. Overall, the gauntlets look good though, featuring the same pearly finish as the lance and with the gold parts neatly done.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429611.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429621.jpeg

Astolfo’s skirt too looks good, the different armor pieces are sufficiently detailed with the gold parts having different hues similar to the lance. I also like how the fabric creases as it gives off a very realistic impression.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429636.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429650.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429664.jpeg
Can’t say that this looks very realistic to me though. X3
Not that I don’t like a cute little butt, but sheesh is this exaggerated…

NSFW…
View spoilerHide spoilerI know that the question whether he has a bulge is always dominant when it comes to figures of him, so here you go
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429677.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429689.jpeg

I like the stretched look on his stockings and garters, with the creases enhancing that effect. Subtle shading and sculpt add definition on the stockings where necessary and they sure make his legs look good.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429701.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429716.jpeg

To complement the figure the boots look great. The small girths at the sides, the gold colored shoe caps and heels as well as the creases and seams are all really well-done. Additionally, the boots just like the cape have a bit of a dirty look.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429725.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429734.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Now for some size comparisons...
Astolfo’s character height is stated to be 164cm, but with the bend legs and battle pose of the figure it’s hard to say if he’d reach that. Nevertheless, the figure is supposed to be a 1/7 scale and comes to a height of around 19-19,5cm (excluding the base).
Anyway, the pose allows for him to be displayed next to 1/8 figures such as ITEM #61401, ITEM #269729 or ITEM #463457 without looking too out of place, though his body proportions and face don’t actually fit them.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429743.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429751.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429758.jpeg

1/7 figures work best, be it smaller ones like ITEM #549405, normal ones like ITEM #595821 or his Kotobukiya counterpart ITEM #604756, which is on the bigger end of the 1/7 scale.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429766.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429782.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429790.jpeg

Bigger scales may or may not work, while ITEM #604109 does dwarf him, the proportions don’t look all that off (to my surprise).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565429797.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Apart from some (mostly minor) complaints I’m really happy with how Astolfo turned out, especially after not expecting too much from Aniplex as a manufacturer. The details mostly look crisp and clean and I’m impressed that they nailed the gold bits (as that's apparently something which is rather hard to do). Most importantly though I think they really got his face and overall look right making me very happy about adding him to my collection. Can’t say I approve of the LE bs they pulled for the rock base, but I’m getting used to manufacturers pulling that kind of crap (which makes me sad).

That's it for this review! Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it! ^^
If you don’t mind, I’d love some constructive criticism,
but if you don’t feel like posting any your thoughts on the figure are also very welcome. :3
If there's anything else in my collection you'd like to see a review of feel free to shoot me a message or something.^^

kururin (12 days ago) #65257114Yes, I'll try, if only for its sake~ And yes, the 2006 anime is the one I was planning on starting with, since it seems to have been the one that started it all. I'd read the visual novel, but I'm not sure I have the time to properly read each individual route. If there's a better way to start, however, feel free to fill me in. :D
There are some nendoroids whose exclusive parts I've missed out on, and it's really annoying that GSC is making some of the "important to the character" nendoroid accessories either pre-order bonuses or the occassional DX. Having been collecting them for years now, it's really sad to watch the line slowly decline in this regard (character selection is great, don't get me wrong, it's just disappointing that they come with so little now).
And as for Kotobukiya . . . yes, I'm still looking for the Nagito Komaeda exclusive faceplate, so I feel you there.
Anyway, there are a lot of trends figure manufacturers are starting to pick up on (very high prices, ridiculous delays, exclusive/limited nonsense, and more), so here's to hoping the hobby won't get too annoying. Then again, I'll probably stick with it no matter what, ha ha! Have a good one and I look forward your next review. ^^
Well, I'm not sure I'm in any position to tell anyone how to get started with Fate. For me personally though, I watched the 2006 anime and got turned off for years before I tried getting into the franchise again, because that anime isn't very good (imo). It also mixes stuff from different routes. Some (elitist) fans will tell that the only way to get into Fate is reading through the VN, but honestly any way works. There's no best way to get started imo.
I hear you there, some nendos I've been eyeing come with so little nowadays that I find myself skipping them more often now. The latest example would be the HxH nendos... honestly, the price for what you little you get is just sad...
Not sure, the prices have increased quite significantly in a very short time, I'll probably still stick with the hobby, but I may be outpriced in the long run.
Thank you! :3 have a good one yourself.

I personally started with Fate/Zero way back and some fans will tell you how that's all wrong (just like starting with FGO), but it worked in the end. Are you talking about the 2006 anime?
The Nendoroid DX version aren't even the worst since they're regurlarly available, GSC's shop bonuses are way worse and don't get me started on stuff like Kotobukiya's exclusive faceplates for some scales and the like.

broken-Toybox (13 days ago) #65236403Wow, that's very cute kit, as expected of Grizzry Panda, though the fact that it's in better shape despite being a recast is somewhat sad. I hope you'll post some pictures once you're done, or maybe even make a blog about it, I love reading such stuff. :3
For sure I’ll document the whole process and post it! I’ll hopefully get around to making a blog about it this time lol.

I sure hope they won't stop, there're quite a few outfits I'd like to see turned into PVC. :3
So far this sure is, my absolute favorite!

I'm also not into the Fate series but I think many of the characters are beautiful and Astolfo, in my opinion, is probably the most aesthetically pleasing out of all of them; combine that with his lucky go happy and protective personality, I can see why he's the best boi~
As for the figure, he's really gorgeous; his hair, whole armor set, cape, garter, skirt, stockings, and his confident look makes this a must have figure for Astolfo fans.
Thanks for taking your time to make this review!!
Thanks for your comment! :3
Yeah, but even just finding characters beautiful or being intrigued can be a slippery slope (or I wouldn't own any idol figures). x3
But I never thought my money ill-spent when I gave in to those kinds of thoughts.
He sure is, I can't stress this enough, but he turned out fantastic~♡

kururin (13 days ago) #65235902Ha ha, thank you! Yes, my wallet is a little worried, but it went through the same thing when I discovered the Touhou fandom a few years back, so it should survive. :D
Fate's multiple storylines are really intriguing, and nearly all of the characters have lovely designs. There are just so many variations of the story it's hard to know where to start. At the moment, I'm just reading up on the "Fate Grand Order" game and looking into watching the "Fate Stay/Night" anime.
But yeah, I've heard many things about Aniplex, including their limited and exclusive nonsense. It's a shame other companies are starting to pick up on the trend, though (I'm looking at you, nendoroid DX line).
Just be careful not to get into too many of these kinds of franchises so your wallet will hold up. x3

Magusfigures (13 days ago) #65235895What a nice review!! I love how you grouped all the detail pictures together so it was easy to compare them ;u;
Astolfo may not be high enough on my faves list to warrant putting money down on a nice figure, but this figure is one I definitely wouldn't mind owning, haha! The pose is great, and you've really brought out his charm! *u* Thank you for writing this!
Thank you! :3
It was really fun doing this review too, because he turned out so nicely. Tbh he isn't that high up my favorites list either (because the top spots are kind of set in stone), but I couldn't pass this figure up regardless. By far my favorite of him so far. :3

jazzylin (13 days ago) #65235849It did take me about 2 months to complete, mostly because I was at work all the time. I found the initial cost a bit expensive yeah but now that I have a base of materials its not too bad. I chose that kit because it was a lot simpler as well, I got a recast of ITEM #783314 as my next kit, im thinking it won’t need as much prep work because it’s ironically in better shape than the first kit which was an original that cost over 15k :/ this one cost me like $30cad.Wow, that's very cute kit, as expected of Grizzry Panda, though the fact that it's in better shape despite being a recast is somewhat sad.
