Fate/Grand Order - Shuten Douji - 1/7 - Assassin (Max Factory)Fate/Grand Order - Shuten Douji - 1/7 - Assassin (Max Factory)

Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review!

For various reasons that all have something to do with the outfit of this figure this review can be considered mildly to medium NSFW. If that’s not your cup of tea you may want to leave now. (*´ω`)o

In this review I’ll be taking a closer look at ITEM #464632 the Assassin class servant Shuten Douji from Fate/Grand Order in her second ascension attire brought to us by Max Factory. With her kneeling pose and the drinking theme this figure really spoke to me ever since she was announced and is basically the reason I’ve grown fond of figures involving characters drinking. X3 Sadly she didn’t come home to me ingame, but I managed to get her when using a friends account. ( ˃̣̣̥ω˂̣̣̥ )
At least I could add the little Oni to my collection in this Form though
With that being said let’s get started with the review. :3

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The box features a very beautiful purple flowery designs with gold accents used for the writing and framing the windows. Round windows can be found on the top, front and back and give off a classical vibe. Lots of shots of the figure from different angles can be found on the box as well but apart from the ones on the sides with the yellow background I think they’re actually detrimental to the overall look. Like… it’s just a bit too much (wouldn’t have minded having just the floral design and gold decorations without any shots of the figure).

The blister is standard fare.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The figure comes in 4 parts (plus, the 2 spare stickers used for the sake): main body, base, gourd and the knee cop (she probably lost it while drinking).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565470938.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565470949.jpeg
There’s also an instruction sheet in both Japanese and English.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Now for the base…
This is surely one of the cheapest looking bases I’ve ever seen, just a huge semi-transparent black disc with nothing whatsoever in terms of decorations. Instead of writing a real paragraph complaining about why I think that’s the worst they could’ve done (for an expensive scale figure at that), let me just say that it isn’t necessary, so I won’t be using it.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565470957.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565470962.jpeg

The gourd with its studs and the gold parts looks fairly nice, though it seems to be (already) emptied. I like how they added different hues of gold to those parts and frankly the only thing bothering me here is the huge seamline running across the flask. Other than that it looks good, semi-transparent with a nice glimmering finish.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565470970.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565470978.jpeg
Also, be aware that she holds the gourd very loosely, meaning you best pose Shuten Douji then just slip the bottleneck into her hand and never touch her again. X3

Shuten Douji’s missing knee cop is shaped like an Oni mask and a very nice-looking one at that, with the dark silvery finish, the red lines and its grim expression.

While her face makes it a bit hard to display her it’s not like other angles don’t offer certain “advantages”. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
I really like her facial expression a coy gaze inviting you to take a sip with her but at the same time she looks a little dangerous baring her fangs (she might devour you if you aren’t careful), very fitting indeed. You may want to carefully consider how to display her though, as the angles can make all the difference here. She looks best around eye-level or slightly above.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471101.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471123.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471149.jpeg
Her mouth and fangs are properly sculpted adding more depth to that area.

The gold ornament in her hair with the huge green gemstone looks good, though there’s a smudge on the gold part of my copy. Her horns look exceptionally glossy with a nice color gradient under the finish.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471164.jpeg

Since it’s that close to her face let me say a few words about the sake cup now. The red with the shading doesn’t give the implied material away (could be lacquered wood, but also ceramic since there’s not visible grain), but looks good regardless. About the sake stickers though… I had to use one of the spares since the first just lay inside the cup moving around. That bothered me so I pressed down on it too roughly resulting in visible bubble under the sticker. After peeling it off the part with the glue was already clouded….
So, what I want to say is, when you stick the sake into the cup, just press the sticker gently until it doesn’t move around anymore. X3
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471179.jpeg

Now for her hair… I really like how well-defined the hair strands are since it really adds something to the otherwise simple bob-cut. The seam line parting her front and back hair looks crisp and clean and the color gradient is simply gorgeous and gives the hair some shine.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471190.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Onto her body…
We’re greeted by a bit of a strange sight, Shuten Douji is wearing something that looks like a mixture of a happi and a regular kimono (because of the sleeves and it being tied with a traditional obi) over…. Well, I guess it’s a strangely revealing piece of armor that bears similarities to neckholder-top with a metallic finish (I guess that’s anime-logic for you). I’ll go with "armor" for this and it’s certainly not a bad-looking one. The grooves and dark silvery finish look pretty neat and I like the swirl decorations on the part around her neck in particular. Apart from the upper rim where the paint seems to be a bit uneven the armor looks nice and crisply defined too, while accentuating her slender body and small chest.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471204.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471217.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471229.jpeg
The happi has slid down her shoulder exposing a very nice looking back (a beautiful back can delight for sure). Since she has a very petite physique her spine and shoulder blades are clearly visible.

It sure is interesting how much you can see despite the top armor. The more I look at this outfit the more the armor seems like the proverbial fig leaf to me. X3
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471243.jpeg

Anyway, the happi/kimono mix crinkles really nicely and shading adds a lot more depth to the sculpt. I love the deep purple color in combination with the green of the second fabric layer you can catch glimpses of in various places.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471256.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471267.jpeg
The obi and obijime look pretty neat too, especially the interwoven/knot part.

Except for the white bit of excess plastic on the back of her kimono the fabric looks really great here too.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471282.jpeg

The real highlight however are the sleeves. Cut in several places almost creating the impression of a flower in bloom and adorned with an intricate swirly red pattern. You can see knots tying them together in some corners as well as green layers of cloth in every cut-out and you know what? They look absolutely gorgeous. All the while the fabric creases very realistically. If I had to complain about anything at all it’d be that the sculpt on the knots could look just a tiny bit crisper, but that’s really nitpicking.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471294.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471347.jpeg

Shuten Douji is wearing something that seems like very small gauntlets around her hands with a similar design as her “armor” when it comes to the grooves and finish. Her fingers depending on the angle look a bit childlike, yet also kinda feminine. As a nice touch she also has polished fingernails. My one complaint would be the small weld between the middle and ring finger on the hand holding the sake cup.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471357.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471367.jpeg

The “armor” panties somehow cover even less than in the official artwork, but oh well… x3
On top of that this piece doesn’t exactly look comfortable, especially the way it parts her butt cheeks (not that it doesn't look nice though).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471382.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471395.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471411.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471428.jpeg
Contrary to her slender upper body Shuten Doujis thighs are pleasantly plump (not gonna lie, that’s part of what drew me to the figure too...) and surely a sight for sore eyes.

Surprisingly her legs, especially the area around her knees are covered by what could almost be described as a decent piece of armor. Again, adorned by swirly silver parts there’re also red plates with an almost pearlescent finish. Half-hidden is another knee guard looking like an Oni mask.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471444.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471516.jpeg

Tied around her ankles we can see red ribbons, which are nicely defined with ample shading.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471527.jpeg

The ornaments on her feet fit the rest of the set of “armor” with their look and they actually look kinda cute being tied to her toes. But sadly, a bit of the paint is bleeding onto her skin here. As for her feet… the toes are nicely defined with painted nails.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471537.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Onto some size comparisons...
With her kneeling pose I didn’t really want to measure Shuten Douji, because I thought it was pointless. She’s supposed to be a 1/7 scale though and her character height is apparently 145cm, which is really small.
Yet it’s immediately obvious she’s way larger than 1/8 figures for example (for a small character like her that’s a bit unexpected). You just can’t help but feel that ITEM #520698 & ITEM #331626 look way off despite the themes matching very well.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471550.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471576.jpeg

Another new drunk in my collection is ITEM #549861, supposedly also a 1/7 figure, but even her proportions don’t really match Shuten Douji, which is indeed weird for such a small character.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471594.jpeg

Even Prinz Eugen ITEM #740168 doesn’t fare too well next to her, despite being one of those 1/7 scales you can display next to 1/6 scales if you want to.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471604.jpeg

With ITEM #718982 I finally get a feeling that she “matches” in terms of size (especially the face) and proportions, which is quite surprising (yet not the first time Max Factory spooks me when it comes to scales).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1565471617.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
So, I’m actually pleasantly surprised by how Shuten Douji turned out after the official pics GSC tweeted when she was released (they looked really awful). Sure her skin color is a bit more yellowish than in the promo pictures but I can’t say it bothers me. Apart from very few complaints I’m very satisfied and happy with her. I actually prefer this version over the Ques Q one too. While I’m sure it will be a magnificent piece I like the less overladen look on this figure way more. Plus, she’s drinking (a new moe point for me apparently). :3

That's it for this review! Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it! ^^
If you don’t mind, I’d love some constructive criticism,
but if you don’t feel like posting any your thoughts on the figure are also very welcome. :3
If there's anything else in my collection you'd like to see a review of feel free to shoot me a message or something.^^

The sticker... well, the instruction sheet makes it look like you're given a choice, but I'm with you... they were probably just lazy (as if the base wasn't bad enough).
It's not like that kind of seam of the hair is anything uncommon, pretty sure all of my figures have that to some degree, but the jug bothers me too (mostly because you won't find a display angle where the seam is invisible...).
That base is just... not sure, instead of making that piece of garbage they should've just left it imo....
Its like as bad as Aquamarine's bases. I guess the base, at least you can custom make something cool but not everyone is gonna do that. And should have to really with the price for the shutens. Which I guess the the hair seam bothers me? Theres better ways to hide it or at least minimize the appearance.

bambipie (10 days ago) #65385717Huh. MF made some weird choices here that I had not noticed before. Im shocked at a few things. The sticker for the sake seems like a corner cutting choice? Why not just make it an acrylic or resin piece... The massive seam line on the sake jug and top of the hair is also pretty surprising. And that base??? Really?? The couldn't even be assed to put a logo or something
The paint work is at least really clean. Thanks for this thorough review.

CaptainZ (10 days ago) #65385212I'm glad they didn't just use her saint graph art for one. I like the pose a lot on her but that base is gross. The only other issue with her is that she's really oversized, which is being to be rough if you want to display her with other Fate characters.
Is it just me or is MF really starting to lose it on the "fit and finish" on their scales now?
Yeah, a lot of times that just looks awkward in figure form (another thing that bothers me about the Ques Q scale). The base is just pitiful, like it'd be so much effort to at least print a floral pattern on it or something (honestly, this looks like a prize figure's base).
Her being oversized bothers me too as I have certain plans for my display and order some figures accordingly. I display her with Prinz Eugen, since that was my plan all along but them not being a good fit is annoying (and it's not like Koto has troubles like being on the lower end of any given scale...).
It's not just you, I had the same issue with ITEM #603996 where GSC's website doesn't even tell you the correct height (and I'm pretty sure they changed the scale somewhere in between because other shops list her as 1/7). Ironically, ITEM #549405 is a bit too small for a 1/7 scale (it's not as bad as Shuten Douji or Jalter though). Not sure what I'm supposed to expect for ITEM #726934 at this point...

I had Shuten on my wishlist until they changed the sculpt and removed the accessories (granted, keeping them would make her price higher).
I won’t be getting her but I love how nice her face, horns and sleeves look in the final product View spoilerHide spoilerand her butt of course ( ✧≖ ͜ʖ≖). The base, kinda awkward legs, and that sake sticker throw me off too much, sadly. The base could look nicer with some cherry blossom petals like in her ingame art? Since the black colour matches the background there. All in all, it’s good you can display her without that bland, round eater of space. ಠ_ಠ
MF is very inconsistent in their 1/7 fgo “line”, from various bases (why can’t all of them have bases like Summer Artoria, Fran, and Tama Cat have?) to uneven scaling. Shuten definitely looks bigger than my Tama CatThe latter could also be because of the original illustration proportions and character’s height but wish they kept a semblance of uniformity with their fgo ladies, at least with bases.

Thanks for the comment, good to see you back~
Thank you! :3 I still wonder what they were thinking posting those though, that’s very bad advertisement imo.
In all honesty, for that price they should’ve kept the accessories if only to make up for that disgrace of a base.
The figure itself turned out very nicely, I wonder how those will look on the Ques Q one in comparison.^^ That would be a lovely idea and very fitting, one of my initial thoughts was that they could’ve continued the flowery theme from the box with some gold decorations (or make at least something similar to the base of ITEM #394712). Yet looking at the base, basically anything would be better, even and ugly cushion like item/740168&rsq.... \| ̄ヘ ̄|/
I noticed that with their Jalter as well, on top of GSC’s shop and all other shops listing her with different scales (my guess is that GSC changed it midway during the PO period), they didn’t even give the correct height for her (only one of the mini rants in my review of her….). As for the bases…. Well, they’re different styles, but still, they put some effort in for the summer servants but not for the rest?
View spoilerHide spoiler Don’t worry about it, I’m working a lot right now and it’s not like I’m in any particular hurry either (recently I took more than 2 months answering a pm…so….). Plus, when you take a break you should actually take your break and not stress yourself too much over stuff like this (though I have trouble with that too). As always I’m happy about any reply, so whenever you feel like it~♡

victorviper (11 days ago) #65356213When I saw this batch of pictures go up the other day, I was hoping you'd review this figure.
I'm not a huge Fate fan, but I do like the design of this character, and you pointed out some features to which I hadn't really paid much attention, like the Oni kneecaps.
I didn't order this figure, but now I might have to keep an eye out for a preowned one. It's a little weird that they used an adhesive part for the sake as opposed to making the saucer+sake a single piece, and I wonder if the adhesive will hold up long-term.
As always, very interesting review.
Thank you so much! :3
Well, if I upload a batch like this within a folder named after the character I've already got the review written. x3
I sometimes envy people who aren't as deep into Fate (or not at all), since it sometimes feels like a hell without escape (for the wallet mostly), even if you focus on your favorites. She sure has some neat features, but I don#t like how they reduced the decorative parts compared to the initial prototype (that and the disgrace of a base...).
I hope you find her cheaper then retail, while I like her I don't think her price is entirely justified. About the adhesive... well, only time will tell, but I wonder why they did it like that. ITEM #740168 had both in one piece but the liquid was barely recognizable as such as it was basically just a thick layer of top coat, but I think MF would've handled that better...
