[NSFW] Rocket Boy 1/6 Chitose[NSFW] Rocket Boy 1/6 Chitose

This article is not suitable for people under 18.
I'm over 18

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320137.jpeg

I've embraced the idea of having 18+ figures in my collection, and I've always been a fan of the "lingerie wedding" figure concept. So, today we'll be reviewing a figure that's a little of column A and a little of column B, Rocket Boy's Chitose. This isn't exactly the most 18+ figure I've ever seen, but she doesn't really have a display option that's remotely SFW, so proceed accordingly...

About the character: Chitose ENTRY #59466 is a character who appears in the short story Natsu no Kemono (a.k.a. Summer's Beast) which appears in the manga Renai Sample ITEM #187184, written by the well-known Homunculus ENTRY #49939.

Natsu no Kemono tells the story of Chitose and her friend Arata. The two of them had a one-time encounter several years prior, and they reconnect when Arata learns that Chitose is about to be married. As one would expect in a hentai manga, the two of them get together, and they happen to discover some long-buried feelings for one another. This prompts Arata to boldly approach Chitose's family and demand that they call off her wedding. Spoiler below...

View spoilerHide spoilerIt turns out that Chitose's wedding was actually a ruse she concocted with the help of her family, meant to see if Arata would step up and confess his feelings when faced with the prospect of Chitose marrying another man. It appears that he passes this test, and her family seems happy that they have a prospective son in law. For a hentai story, it's really quite sweet and charming.

Packaging----------8/10

Rocket Boy opts for a very simple package design. We've got a windowless white box with the name of the character, and a red ribbon.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319417.jpeg

Most of the other panels on the box are similar.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319418.jpeg

Inside, you'll find Chitose, a little instruction guide, and possibly a postcard of the original source art. I say "possibly" because if you go the preowned route, it's not uncommon for these postcards to go MIA, but I guess I was lucky and Chitose's previous owner dutifully stashed the postcard in the box.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319419.jpeg

Chitose requires for all purposes zero set up. Unbox her, and she's ready to go.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319423.jpeg

Because of her kneeling pose, the box is fairly compact, measuring 23 by 23 by 20 cm.

Base----------7.5/10

The base is a little bit of a mixed bag. The large fluffy base certainly complements the overall soft feel of the figure...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319424.jpeg

...but the base is also quite large, and as you can see in the shot below, the base appears prone to "shedding". Simply moving the figure around to take these photos resulted in some of the fluffy material working its way loose.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320145.jpeg

I'm typically not a huge fan of these fluffy bases as they are near-impossible to clean. Fortunately, she can be displayed just fine without the base, and so that's how I've got Chitose on display.

Posing----------8/10

Rocket Boy attempts to duplicate Chitose's pose from the cover of the the source manga. Interestingly, she doesn't actually appear in this outfit in the story Summer's Beast, but the wedding theme is a key part of the story all the same.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319421.jpeg

If you are of a critical disposition, you might note that the manga cover features Chitose kneeling on top of some sort of garment (presumably her wedding dress?) which she has removed, and she also has a bouquet of roses underneath her hand. Neither of these features makes it into figure form.

Let's now have a look at her.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320138.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320139.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320140.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320141.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320142.jpeg

Overall, Rocket Boy did a good job in translating the cover art into 3D, but this pose does have a few quirks. The way she's extending her arm is sort of a moe staple, but her raised arm will also obscure her face from certain angles. Thus, I've got Chitose displayed in a spot where I generally see her from her right side.

You may also have noticed that the cover of the manga has the onlooker gazing downward upon Chitose. This makes sense given her kneeling pose, and I think the figure looks best when she's viewed from the same perspective. This means she would be a good candidate for display on a shelf slightly below eye level.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320143.jpeg

The way Chitose has her arm raised and the fact that she's arching her back ever so slightly means she will look a little awkward if she's displayed above eye level. Her head can be removed should you wish to remove her necklace, and from this angle, the joint where her head separates is very visible.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320144.jpeg

So, the pose is faithful to the source artwork, but it is not without some small quirks.

Sculpting----------9/10
Painting----------8/10

My sub-collection of Rocket Boy figures is steadily increasing, and I've been quite happy with the quality of all their products. I would say that Chitose continues that trend, as I could not find too many QC issues with this figure. Probably the main knock on this figure is that its design is very simple and she does not have a display option that is SFW.

That said, one of the best things about this figure is Chitose's pretty face. The way her bangs hang in her face and the way she's got her hair loosely pulled into a ponytail gives her a very soft feel. The story Summer's Beast, like most of the stories in the Renai Sample manga, is fairly romantic in nature and her little smile channels that fact; also, it's always nice to see 18+ figures where the subject looks happy and relaxed. Additionally, I really like her purple eyes!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320146.jpeg

I like all the different little shapes that adorn her veil/tiara combo. If you're being picky, you might note that the cover illustration shows her tiara adorned with all sorts of shiny gems, but this feature does not make it into the figure. I'm not that picky :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320147.jpeg

Possibly my biggest issue with the figure involves the fit of the veil/tiara. You can see the material is perhaps thicker than it should be and the veil just does not want to stay positioned quite right on her head. That little gap highlights that the veil tends to slip just off of center. It's not a huge deal, particularly if you won't be moving her around much, but I definitely observed some slippage of the veil while taking photos for this review.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320148.jpeg

I'd say Rocket Boy did an okay job with the translucent effect on the veil. Sometimes translucent parts like this can look very fake and plasticky, but the frosted effect on the material looks realistic enough.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320149.jpeg

If you like, the veil can be removed, but IMO without the veil Chitose looks a little bit plain.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320150.jpeg

On the other hand, with the veil removed, you get a better look at her elaborate necklace, and you can see some little details on the sculpt of her back, like the small of her back and a hint of some musculature on her shoulders.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320151.jpeg

On her bustier, you can see how some of the blue striping is not quite perfect, and some of the lacing kind of "melts" together. On the other hand, I like how the material is very textured, particularly towards the bottom of the bustier!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320152.jpeg

One of the key features of this figure is Chitose's elaborate necklace. It seems to me that the necklace looks thicker and heavier than it does in the source artwork. Also, the manga cover shows that the necklace is silver with white beads, while in figure form it is just solid silver.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320153.jpeg

Her fingers are well sculpted.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320154.jpeg

I like how she's wearing two different colors of flower armbands. Also, the sculpt of her arm is very well done. The indentation on the inside of her elbow is a nice subtle detail, and I like how her bicep, elbow, and forearm are clearly differentiated. This is a place where lazy sculpting often shows up in the form of "stick arms", so these little details are appreciated.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320155.jpeg

The red ribbons look suitably light, and the knots are well sculpted.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320156.jpeg

You can see a couple small issues in the shot below. There's a little bit of excess material on her finger, and the painting on Chitose's flower bracelet is a little bit messy in places.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320157.jpeg

One of the most notable features of this figure is the way Chitose is bursting out of her bustier. The source artwork makes the material in her bustier slightly sheer, and her nipples are pronounced and they are also very shiny. There are no alternate parts which allow for her to be displayed in a way that keeps her more covered up, and this could be viewed as a positive or a negative. If you are opposed to displaying figures with any sort of visible nipple-age, that means this figure will be a no-go. On the other hand, having a second display option would necessitate either an alternative torso part (cue up cash register sound) or some potentially clunky castoffable clothing parts.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320159.jpeg

Given that Chitoe's original price was not outrageous by today's standards (14000 yen), I can understand why Rocket Boy kept things simple on this front. I'm OK with having only a single display option for the figure, but I can also see how this could dissuade potential buyers.

I like the design of her stockings. The little paw prints are a cute affectation, and the loops which hold the blue ribbon in place is an interesting detail. That touch of orange also is quite eye catching!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320160.jpeg

The sculpt of her legs is good. Her calves are nicely defined, and I like the definition on her ankles.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320161.jpeg

As in the source illustration, Chitose's lower body is totally bare. Like with her upper body, there's no option for keeping her covered up down there, but from this angle, you don't really see any naughty bits. It is worth noting that the source illustration depicts her with hair down there, but this feature does not make it into figure form.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320162.jpeg

It would have been interesting if Rocket Boy had provided some hair decals, as Q-Six did with Rie Kawai ITEM #319503 or if they had outright sculpted the hair, like ITEM #211167, but depiction of pubic hair has long been something of a grey area in the world of anime, manga, and figures...

Rocket Boy gives Chitose a very round and full butt, and she's got some subtle butt dimples. Butt dimples are an area where sculptors sometimes get carried away, so I was glad to see some restraint on that front.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320163.jpeg

Her vagina is quite detailed, it looks quite...moist...and interestingly Rocket Boy sculpts her anus as well. That's a feature that is surprisingly uncommon in 18+ figures.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2320164.jpeg

Scale Comparison

With her kneeling pose, Chitose will span about 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) at her tallest point. If she were standing, I estimate she'd be just under 11.5 inches (29.25 cm) tall. At 1/6 scale, that would make her just under 5'9" (175 cm). In the manga, she's depicted as being quite tall, nearly as tall as her friend Arata, and given that the mean height of adult Japanese men is 5'7" (170 cm), her 1/6 scale seems accurate. The fact that she is quite tall does mean that she might look a little more like 1/5.5 sitting on the shelf.

Here is Chitose with one of my favorite figures, Wing's Sonico ITEM #198576. The contrast in their outfits makes them an interesting pair, and both figures are listed as 1/6 scale, although you can see that Chitose looks a little bit larger.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319425.jpeg

These two also pair up well. Vertex's Pochaco ITEM #235623 is listed at 1/6 scale, but she might also be a little more like 1/5.5, and you can see how Chitose compares.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319426.jpeg

A couple of blushing brides :). Amakuni's Chachamaru Ashikaga ITEM #361037 is 1/7 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319427.jpeg

The nice thing about Chitose's large scale is that she will not simply disappear when she's posed next to standing figures. Here she is with Orchid Seed's 1/7 scale Yuka Yoshii ITEM #61722.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319428.jpeg

The wedding theme makes these two a cute combination :). Pochaco ITEM #397160 is 1/5 scale, and so Chitose will still stand out even when posed with larger scale standing figures. I also like that she doesn't look too out of place even when displayed with non-ecchi figures, something that cannot be said for every 18+ figure!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/24/2319832.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/10/23/2319422.jpeg

Arguments for: Chitose's pose is a very good duplication of the source illustration into 3D, she is very pretty, the large scale is a good choice considering the kneeling pose, the figure can be found at a reasonable price, and despite the fact that she is popping out of her outfit and her lower body is uncovered, she doesn't really give off a super-pervy vibe.

Arguments against: The large base is prone to shedding, some differences between the source artwork and the finished figure, and ultimately the design of this figure is quite simple.

Admittedly, this is a very simple figure but Chitose makes up for it with lots of charm. It's nice to see an 18+ figures that isn't fantastically pervy, and the soft and warm feel of this figure would make this a fine addition to any 18+ subcollection, particularly if you're just dipping your toe in the 18+ waters :).

Availability (as of this writing)

Not too hard to find pre-owned.

A number of Rocket Boy figures have gotten crazy expensive on the secondhand market, including ITEM #549551, ITEM #464771, and ITEM #331598, but possibly because she is a relatively simple figure, Chitose can be found for a reasonable price these days. I paid 10400 yen for mine, and as I write this AmiAmi has an A-/B one for 12280 yen and Mandarake has a couple listed for 11000-12000 yen.

Given the large scale of the figure and the ever escalation of figure prices, I'd say these prices are a relatively good deal.

Cloudberry (1 month ago) #69862363If the coloration is close to the manga, then I guess I can't really complain about the saturated nipples lol.
And thanks for the recommendation; I've known about ITEM #604880 but I don't know the source but ITEM #4975 is really cute. I'd check the series origin but it's good to know it's from a hentai series haha...

I've been meaning to do reviews of both of those figures, but the castoff feature ITEM #604880 is a fairly nerve-wracking process.

vgadict (1 month ago) #69842277A very detailed and thorough review! From the pictures, it looks like they did a great job with the body proportions of her legs and her shapely butt. Also, the anatomical detail looks great, and even the stockings are nicely done. One thing I dislike is the figure's expression - to me she looks sad and about to cry. I wish it was closer to the original artwork with a smiling expression instead.

That's an interesting observation on her expression that I hasn't thought of. The story makes Chitose seem rather shy and awkward, so from that point of view it seems in character for her.

victorviper (1 month ago) #69822639As I mentioned in the previous comment, the source manga has a pretty light touch as far as hentai goes.
It's interesting you mention the saturated nipples, as I had a conversation about this subject with one of my MFC friends about this very subject quite a while back. The short version of this conversation was that I was thinking about getting this figure but I wasn't sure, in part because of this very issue. However, the cover art of the manga (along with many of Homunculus' color illustrations is very saturated), so that is actually faithful to the source.
The relatively, as you say, non-hentai-y look of the figure is one of its best features, IMO, and I've got a number of other figures that fall in that category (the source is hentai, but you wouldn't necessarily know from the figure):

victorviper (1 month ago) #69821528I never thought to look too much at her stomach. She's not a waif, but the manga makes it pretty clear that neither is she really full-figured; she's just a fairly tall girl.
I'm not a huge consumer of hentai anime/manga, but I'll partake once in a while, and I generally prefer my hentai served with a lighter touch. I probably should have done a comparison shot with Chitose and this ITEM #6893 old figure, as their scales are similar and Marin's source ENTRY #1013 is also a fairly light and fluffy hentai.
In Renai Sample, pretty much all the hentai content takes place in the context of an established relationship, and Homunculus' artwork is top-notch; I'm surprised that this is the one and only current figure based on their designs (this ITEM #837575 tapestry is also from the same manga).

I'm around the same height as her, albeit way less endowed, so I suppose you're actually right -- her stomach is realistically sculpted. And I don't watch/read any hentai, but the story sounds so good, maybe I'll take a peek if I'm adventurous lol. Again, thanks for the great review.

Cloudberry (1 month ago) #69815677Funny; someone suggested to me this hentai at an anime convention but I could not remember the name. I only remember the plot that person told me but googling it gives me... uh... lots of stuff that's not related to it, unsurprisingly.
Thanks for the review! You have really sharp eyes and I wouldn't have caught those small imperfections. Overall, it's very cute figure; even though it's adult themed, it's not that hentai-y. I also like the lingerie wedding outfit too.
The only thing that slightly bothers me is how saturated her nipples are... maybe its the glossiness that makes it look saturated? I'd like it more if its a bit darker... but that's my opinion.
