Amakuni 1/7 Momohime "Onsen"Amakuni 1/7 Momohime "Onsen"

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/17/2333481.jpeg

Today, we'll be reviewing one of the more photogenic figures in my collection, and one that's been in my review queue for too long, Amakuni's Momohime. Because Momohime is in hot spring mode, many of the shots below could be considered somewhat NSFW...

About the character: Momohime ENTRY #1902 is one of the main characters from the Vanillaware ENTRY #26960 game Oboro Muramasa ENTRY #107. Momohime is a kind and gentle young lady whose soul is possessed by the ronin Jinkuro; the two of them then embark on a quest to retrieve Jinkuro's demon blade.

Packaging----------9/10

More often than not, Amakuni uses a windowless box design, and Momohime continues that trend.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/17/2333483.jpeg

Amusingly, it's often mentioned that Oboro Muramasa has a particularly Japanese feel (really - a JRPG feels Japanese :) ), even for an RPG, and the tiled design and the various symbols on the box play up this feel IMO.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/17/2333482.jpeg

The back panel features a number of shots of Momohime.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/17/2333480.jpeg

All in all, it's quite an attractive and classy box design, and so Amakuni did a fine job here. The box is not large in volume, measuring 23 by 17 by 15 cm, but it is a little heavier than you might expect given the listed 1/7 scale. As we will see shortly, Momohime's base adds some nontrivial weight to the package, and Momohime herself is much larger than her listed 1/7 scale; thus, when you pick up the box, it will feel like there's a 1/6 scale figure inside.

Base----------9/10

The base is functional and attractive. In-game, the hot spring scenes take place in a mountain/cavern environment, and so the rocky base is a nice feature that recalls those scenes from the game. Additionally, because of the lighting (and sometimes because Jinkuro gives off a greenish glow), the rocks have a greenish hue to them in-game, and Amakuni also realizes this detail.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332249.jpeg

Note that three pegs secure Momohime's feet to the base, and this in addition to the clear plastic wedge under her foot makes her very stable once attached to the base.

Really, the only knock on the base is that the rocks can potentially make it difficult to display her close to other figures, a possible issue if your shelves are a little bit crowded.

Posing----------9/10

Momohime's pose is simple, but it is appropriate. During the onsen scenes, the player can interact with other game characters, and Momohime expresses great concern at being seen naked. Thus, the way she's trying to cover herself up with the towel is appropriate.

Let's have a look at her.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332254.jpeg

There's something interesting to see from a number of angles, whether it's Momohime's pretty face, or the excellent body sculpt, so I would say that Amakuni did just fine here!

Sculpting----------9/10
Painting----------8/10

I've generally been happy with all of the Amakuni figures in my collection, and Momohime keeps this trend intact. Overall, I'd say the quality of the figure is very good, but there is one particular painting issue that seems to be commonplace with this particular figure.

One of my favorite things about this figure is Momohime's pretty face. She is meant have a very traditional beauty, and her pretty brown eyes play up this facet of her character design. In-game she is a little bit mortified about walking around nearly nude during the hot springs scenes, and so her facial expression and the subtle blush are perfectly in character for her.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332255.jpeg

The painting issue that I mentioned a minute ago is that flaw in the front of her bangs. It's not totally clear to me if this was just a painting flaw from the get-go, or if somehow the front of her head was rubbing against something inside the package. This seems to be a very common issue with this figure, and for a while, a whole bunch of these figures could be found secondhand at a deep discount because of the painting flaw. So, this flaw could net you a big discount on the figure, but if you are a figure perfectionist, you might consider asking the seller to verify the condition of the figure in advance.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332256.jpeg

The sculpt of the flowers in her hair is good, although you can see the pink paint from the flowers spills over a bit onto the leaves. Also, I hadn't really noticed this until editing these photos, but the matte black finish of Momohime's hair will really show the dust! I've got Momohime inside a glass case, but even a closed case is not impervious to dust...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332257.jpeg

One area where Amkuni could have done better is evident in the shot below. It's very obvious where a faceplate attaches. Something like this would be unavoidable if an optional faceplate could be swapped in, but this figure includes no scuh feature.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332258.jpeg

I really like the sculpt of Momohime's hair! The short and very textured hair is faithful to her character design.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332259.jpeg

That little sprig of hair by her ear is very cute :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332260.jpeg

Momohime's towel has some interesting subtle features. In places, the white towel is tinged with a more flesh-like color to suggest that the towel is wet. I also like how you can see the towel clinging to her body in various places.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332262.jpeg

There's also a number of interesting things going on in the shot below. Note the sculpting on her collarbones and the detail on her armpit, and the way she's holding the towel, Momohime is lifting her breasts a little bit and pressing them against her body. On that front, there was extensive discussion about her breast size when this figure was first teased; there were comments made about how her breasts were slightly larger than they are "supposed" to be. I'm inclined to agree but at the same time, I don't think the size is sufficiently off-model to be a distraction.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332263.jpeg

I was playing around with lighting, trying to duplicate the feel of the in-game hot springs scenes, and I liked how the shot below turned out. With this lighting setup, it accentuates some of the interesting features of her body sculpt, and the towel really does look like it's clinging to her body. I mentioned that Momohime is a very photogenic figure, and so if you like taking photos of your figures, Momohime makes an excellent subject!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332272.jpeg

That is one killer body sculpt! I like the sculpting of her shoulder blades and back and note how you can see some subtle musculature on her shoulder and bicep.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332264.jpeg

Amakuni sculpts in some butt dimples, but they also show some restraint. Momohime's backside is round, but at the same time it's also rather petite which is in keeping with her character design.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332265.jpeg

This is not an 18+ figure, so there is no detail on her lower body.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332266.jpeg

I like the shading on the backs of her knees, but I can't quite decide if the angle of her right leg is too pronounced or if it's about right, given the way she is standing with her feet turned inward.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332267.jpeg

The spirit of Jinkuro accompanies Momohime on her adventure. He is supposed to look wispy, and so note how parts of Jinkuro are translucent. Jinkuro was another point of some contention when this figure was teased; the consensus seems to be that it would have been preferable to make Jinkuro a removable accessory.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332268.jpeg

One quirk is that relative to his appearance in-game, Jinkuro's green color seems a little bit too flat. On the plus side, his frown/scowl is in keeping with his overall disposition.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332269.jpeg

In the shot below, I cranked the hell out of the saturation and contrast and in doing so, Jinkuro looks a little more like his true self but he won't look like this under normal lighting.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332270.jpeg

The sculpting on Momohime's ankle and toes is good, but I hadn't noticed that her foot does not want to attach 100% to the base. She seems rock-solid on the base, and since I didn't even notice that and it doesn't adversely impact the stablity of the figure, I guess it's not a big deal...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2332271.jpeg

Scale Comparison

The way Momohime has her arm raised above her head, and factoring in the thickness of the base, the figure spans about 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) at her tallest point. Momohime herself is about 9.75 inches (24.75 cm) tall. Amakuni lists her at 1/7 scale, which would make her a little over 5'8" (173 cm) tall. It's pretty clear she's not that tall, and so I'd say her true scale is more like 1/6.5.

These two pair well together, as Momohime is meekly covering herself up while Tamaki Kousaka is doing the same but she seems much more playful. Griffon's Tamaki ITEM #103700 is 1/6 scale for comparison.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2331929.jpeg

I find the "nude but not really ecchi" theme of both of these figures to be an interesting one. Once again, it's interesting that Momohime is quite apprehensive about being seen nude, while Holo has long since progressed beyond these foolish mortal ideas :). Kadokawa's Holo ITEM #630948 is 1/7 scale, and I think you can clearly see that Momohime will look much larger than the typical 1/7 figure sitting on the shelf.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2331931.jpeg

I like the way these two look together, even though Shoujo S ITEM #25420 is an 18+ figure, and Momohime is not. Shoujo-san is 1/7 scale, and once again you can see how Momohime looks much larger by comparison.

(18+ image behind the spoiler tag)
View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2331930.jpeg

You can also see how the rocky base can present some challenges in displaying Momohime near other figures.

The onsen is a warm environment and so the "skimpy outfit in cold weather" theme of Daiki's Kurara-chan ITEM #604642 makes these two an interesting pair. Kurara is 1/6 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2331932.jpeg

The dark hair of both of these figures gives them both a very traditional beauty; the hot springs and seifuku themes are both classic anime tropes as well. Daiki's F-ism Shoujo ITEM #422432 is 1/6 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/14/2331933.jpeg

A couple of Vanillaware heroines. Yamato's Velvet ITEM #9886 does not have a scale listed, but I'd say she's close to 1/7 scale, and you can see how Momohime compares.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/11/17/2333479.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: Momohime is very beautiful and for whatever reason Vanillaware's character designs seem to translate particularly well into 3D, the rocky base really does bring to mind the onsen scenes from the game, excellent body sculpt, and despite the fact that Momohime is nearly nude, you don't really get an ecchi vibe from the figure, as she did appear exactly like this in-game.

Arguments against: If your figure display skews conservative, the nearly-nude theme might make her look out of place, the rocky base could present some challenges if your shelves are getting crowded, and the paint issue on her bangs is something to watch out for if you're thinking about purchasing this figure.

All in all, I really enjoy this figure. She is such a pretty figure, and the large scale really makes her stand out on the shelf. She's also one of the most photogenic figures in my collection, and it was a lot of fun taking shots of her. Highly recommended if you are a fan of the character or if you are just a Vanillaware fan in general.

Availability (as of this writing)

Not too hard to find pre-owned.

To answer Jinkuro's question, it seems like plenty of people are still interested in the Oboro Muramasa franchise. If you're in the market for this figure, Momohime has a variant ITEM #520730 which simulates a wet effect (her hair has a shiny finish, and some beads of water are sculpted on her body). The wet version is less common than the original, but neither of them seem too hard to find, although prices for both versions can vary wildly.

As a I write this in November 2019, Jungle Hobby has a couple of the original version at prices between 8300-10000 yen, Mandarake has the original for 6500 to 8000 yen, and AmiAmi has the wet variant listed (B/B condition) for 10300 yen. I got mine when a when a bunch of these with the paint defect started showing up, and with the known paint issue, mine was discounted all the way to 5400 yen, and so if you can live with the paint issue on her bangs, you might be able to get a really good deal on this figure!

POLL TIME!!!

The paint flaw on Momohime's bangs could potentially net a discount on this figure, and so the question is...

What's your stance? Would you trade a painting flaw like the one in this figure for a significant (40-50%) discount?

  • 75%Yes, I would! I'll trade a small flaw for a large discount.
  • 25%No, I wouldn't. I want my figures to be pristine and the discount wouldn't be worth it.

Happyakrz (4 days ago) #71271404Another great review of a figure I just noticed the other day. While relatively simplistic in nature, the figure still emotes a lot of energy and emotion, and you're right -- this sculpt is really beautiful, and the model is a striking beauty. I really appreciate your display of the difference in lighting as well. This is something that most non-photographers will never truly realize -- photography and the images that we are inundated with every day is principally controlled by the lighting -- without the proper atmosphere and display of the features, everything would be a flat mess. The towel, in particular, is the perfect example of this -- at first, I was pretty "meh" about the addition of the towel, but in the right lighting, it became another character in the pose, doing its darn'dness to keep her covered.

Lighting is always a tricky thing with figure reviews. You want bright enough light so the photos won't be noisy, but not so much that you get hot spots or that details get completely blown out.

Usually, more artistic shots don't necessarily mesh with doing an objective review of a figure, but in this case that reduced-lighting shot worked kind of well. Like you said, the lower light level accentuates the detail on the towel.

Even with the advances in camera tech and editing tools, it can still be tough to get good photos, particularly when doing indoor photography.

Cloudberry (14 days ago) #70731691The shading/sculpting for her whole backside is amazing. From her back muscle, butt, and even behind the knee is superb.

The body sculpt is one of the best features of this figure to be sure, and in PICTURE #2332264 there are so many interesting features on display, like her taut butt and the musculature on her back.

galablue (14 days ago) #70730940ah, yes, a perfect back and butt sculpt. as soon as i saw her from behind i was like "yes! back dimples!"
this figure is surprisingly loveable for me. i typically think that they make anime girl's breasts too large (many swimsuit figures suffer from the balloon breast), but i find that hers are a pleasant surprise with how they're realistically being pressed up against her chest as if she was scrambling for the towel. and her expression is great, a good "unsure" look about her.
but you're right -- she's totally closer to 1/6 than 1/7. i mean ... i guess that could be more bang for your buck?

That's a good point about the overall body sculpt. Her breasts are definitely not balloon-y in any way, and the body sculpt, while idealized to be sure, is not crazy unrealistic. Now that I think about it, her waist is not as impossibly narrow as you sometimes see in figures, too.

As far the scale goes, the thick base definitely makes her look 1/6, even if she is more like 1/6.5. I've get her displayed next to ITEM #549591 and ITEM #397101, you can't readily tell the difference in scale between Momohime and those 1/6 figures just at a glance.
