Tawdry Tidings Fellow Collectors!
Today’s review is a little on the risqué side, so I give you fair warning. You may want to turn down the heat, because it’s going to get warm in here!

Back Story
As I have relayed in my short bio article, the first manga I ever read was Air Gear by Oh Great! It’s a wonderful story of a young teen boy named Itsuki (Ikki for short) who learns about an underworld of powerful, customizable rollerblades. In the story, Ikki lives with four sisters who have taken him in, one of which is Ringo. She’s the same age as Ikki, and though he doesn’t know it, she does her best to look out for him as he gets into the mischief that most young teen boys get into. For the most part, Ringo is an absolute ideal young woman – she’s kind, considerate, compassionate, intelligent, and the list goes on and on. She’s also absolutely adorable, and oftentimes, quite attractive in a more mature way (while still being completely modest).

In the middle of the story, Ikki gets himself into a serious bind with some pretty bad guys, and Ringo decides to secretly help him with a disguise that will hide her identity. The costume is ridiculous, but it’s very modest and does a decent job of hiding her face from the main characters. She calls herself, the Masked Croissant!

There is another girl in the story who is vying for Ikki’s attentions, and she knows Ringo’s secret. So, the next time Ikki finds himself in trouble, Ringo again attempts to help him out in her costumed mask. But the other girl has discreetly swapped bags with Ringo, and when our female heroine goes into the bathroom to change into what she believes is her tame costume, she finds a series of straps and bondage-wear that no one would believe that she’d dare to wear. But to everyone’s surprise, Ringo comes out in the sparce outfit anyway, with her head hidden in the bag, and tries to save the day again.

For me, the moment is a hilarious test of just how far Ringo’s love for Ikki will move her to defend him. Her pride is set aside, and she goes out wearing something that is the exact opposite of her character, but she does it for the boy she loves.

In a series of 34 or 35 books, Ringo only shows up in two or three pages in this outfit, but of course, this is the outfit that the designers and sculptors chose for Ringo. While it does show off her amazing figure, it is the opposite of her inner character. I’ll be honest, I love the way they’ve presented her body. But what I love more about this figure is that it truly represents how far the character went for love.

I looked for this figure everywhere and was having a horrible time finding a factory-sealed copy until an auction on ebay came across my screen. After a couple of messages back and forth with the seller, I felt confident that this was a genuine figure in a sealed state and made the purchase.

She’s my most daring figure – tawdry as the day is long in appearance – but deep down, I’m really crushing on Ringo in her natural state.

Yamato
Noyamano Ringo – The Masked Hentai – Air Gear -- ITEM #493
Sculptor: Uchijima Yasuhiro -- ENTRY #8273
Vendor: private MFC seller ($134.95 in September of 2019)

The Box
The box is a little more pop-culture-edgy than I’d expected, and the icon with the skulls didn’t really play a part in the character – though I’ll have to check the manga to see if the air gears Ringo wore had the pattern on the toes.

There are windows on front, sides, and top, but they aren’t very large. I’m not sure that the fonts used and general graphics match with Ringo’s character at all, but perhaps they work with the alter-ego Masked Hentai (the figure’s name) a little more. Whatever the case, the figure arrived safely in a good box with adequate blister packaging. The accessories were also packaged well and kept separate for the sake of paint transfer concerns.

The Figure
The base for the figure is a pretty simple plastic circle with the Air Gear name and insignia on it. There are two holes drilled in the surface, but they’re not for pegs in the feet – there are a pair of extra “mounts” that are used to get Ringo’s skates to stand solidly on the base. As these mounts are not the same size, you need to make sure that they are situated with the taller mount on the left (as Ringo faces you).

The bag is included with the figure for those who want to display her with her identity hidden. There is also a separate pair of pigtails included that fit well into the back of the bag for this configuration.

The main figure of Ringo is really a single piece, with her two alternate pigtails available if you want to showcase her without the bag over her head. And the manufacturer has included an easy-to-follow instruction sheet for assembly.

Reviewer's Notes
Overall Sculpt
As I won’t be showcasing Ringo with the bag over her head, I’ll at least give you a quick look at what she looks like assembled in this fashion, and then we’ll move on to my preferred orientation.

I think the idea was pretty good for the bag, but I’m frustrated by the fact that the only peg (in the front) of the bag that shows, isn’t even actually used to stabilize the bag in its position. I’ve squeezed as hard as I dare to get the peg to snap into place, but the bag is already as tight as I can get it.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_02_72.jpg

But as I much prefer seeing Ringo’s beautiful face and lovely pigtails caught in the breeze, we’ll continue on with her assembled in that manner.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_03_72.jpg

The air gear skates that Ringo is wearing are not her customary pair, but I really like how the boots continue up her calf and include straps that are also flying in the wind.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_11_72.jpg

The straps that create Ringo’s wardrobe are masterfully sculpted and placed JUST where they need to be on the body, accompanied by a sort of strap cape that sways with the wind as well. At the thighs, there are small fringes of what may be lace, and I like that they added these (perhaps to represent stockings that aren’t present).

There are some interesting skull-like buckles throughout the straps, and I appreciate the detail that they add to the figure.

The sculpt of Ringo’s body is nearly perfect from head to toe.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_31_72.jpg

Her amazing curves are presented in a relatively realistic fashion, though there are a couple of instances where I wish they’d taken a little more time to be detailed. The first instance is Ringo’s hands – I just wish that they’d been a bit more detailed in their sculpts, with perhaps some polish on the nails. The second instance is Ringo’s bum – while the cheeks are beautifully shaped, they merge together in a way that almost looks like they’re glued together with a strap simply disappearing between them. Neither issue is that bad, but for the price I paid, I was hoping for something a bit more intricate.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_18_72.jpg

Ringo’s hyper-extended right elbow makes me cringe a little, but I find it interesting that it’s also pretty realistic to some real-life situations I’ve witnessed recently.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_14_72.jpg

The pole attached to Ringo’s collar, and the collar itself, are accurate to the drawings of her outfit in the manga, but it’s humorous how NON-Ringo they are in reality.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_16_72.jpg

Ringo’s hair is really nicely presented in a flurry of motion. When combined with the swaying straps, it really gives the impression that the entire figure is in the midst of a powerful updraft. I also like the black hair ties that are used at the base of each pigtail.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_25_72.jpg

The seam at the top of Ringo’s head is clean and follows the back line of her bangs.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_30_72.jpg

Painting
Ringo’s body is a pretty solid flesh tone with little shading. Her hair is a nice brown with some shading to add texture. But the real artistic talents went into the painting of the straps and skates. There are some amazingly small details throughout the wardrobe that were handled with intricate care, and I think they really add to making the figure something that catches the eye and holds it.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_19_72.jpg

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_display_27_72.jpg

And lastly, Ringo’s face .. she shows concern here (appropriate to the storyline at this moment), and this is an accurate representation in three-dimensions of how frustrated she feels with the embarrassment of the moment.

Instead of creating a toned color at her lips, the painter chose to set her mouth more firmly with a black line between her lips, and her beautiful blue eyes are glaring a hole into the girl who has caused her this fashion faux-pas.

Overall Presentation
While the figure is definitely the most revealing on my shelf, I think she’s still one of my favorites because of how I feel about the actual character behind the figure. In this particular case, I know that Ringo isn’t comfortable with her physical presence, but I admire how the figure portrays her “kiss my ass” attitude. From a purely artistic point of view, this is an amazing figure that really shows the technical ability of the sculptor to present the female form from every glorious angle.

Comparisons
I’ve used this Ringo figure in comparisons in several previous reviews, so I think that this time I just want to present her from three perspectives that explain who Ringo really is to me.

The first comparison is how Ringo would like people to see her most of the time – Gekijouban Sword Art Online : -Ordinal Scale- - Yuuki Asuna - 1/7 - Natsufuku (Chara-Ani, Toy's Works) -- ITEM #464805

At her core, Ringo is a beautiful, bright student who is dedicated to her friends, family, and studies.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_comp_1_72.jpg

The second comparison is how Ringo thinks she looks when she’s playing the part of Ikki’s heroine in disguise – Evangelion Shin Gekijouban: Q - Ayanami Rei (Flare) -- ITEM #463483

When Ringo is on fire in her skates, she’s as cunning and dangerous as any femme fatale!

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/ringo_straps/ringo_straps_comp_2_72.jpg

And the third comparison is how Ringo actually acts and feels about Ikki and their friendship – Fate/Grand Order - Scáthach - 1/7 - Heyagi Mode (Alter) -- ITEM #464672

Ringo is precisely the kind of girl/woman that every man needs in his life – subtle sensuality, constant love and dedication, and a level of comfort that encourages great communication, tenderness, and sharing. Confidence enough to stand on her own two feet, and a bond that can’t be separated by any distance.

Lessons Learned
I was a little nervous about purchasing a figure through ebay (though I’ve bought and sold dozens of other types of items through the online auction service). This transaction was really easy, though, and I now regularly check to see about harder-to-find figures in the ebay community. Not that I’d recommend going this route on a regular basis – I think that if you continue with strong communication and check on authenticity aspects (like the Japanese holographic stickers on the box), you can find some real gems at decent prices.

As always, please feel free to reach out with questions or comments! I love hearing from you all!

Until next time!

galablue (17 days ago) #70731078i'm so glad you are finally reviewing this figure! i was interested in her when i saw her in your comparison figures.
i'm pretty disappointed in the bag over her head and am a little surprised that it didn't affect your score, but honestly who is going to display her with a bag over her head with a beautiful face and hair sculpt like that? no one! i think the only way the bag would have worked is if it was a separate head piece all together that you could have swapped out, like the bag was sculpted over her head. i'm also a little so/so on how her feet attach to the base, but since this figure is over ten years old (amazing quality!), i can forgive it. i feel like the skates, nowadays, would be more on display.
i absolutely love the backstory behind this piece, it totally makes me want to read the manga. i also love how you did your comparisons this time with a theme for each picture :)
great review as always, i'm happy we're getting quite a few of them in a row from you!! can't wait for more.

I would highly recommend the Air Gear manga! It is a great story of young men and women overcoming their own insecurities and fears to become powerful and dedicated friends.

I like the fact that they included the bag, because that's how she actually presents herself in the story, but I'd NEVER display her that way! I have such a crush on the character of Ringo, and this being the only figure of her that I really like ... she deserves a special place in my display. :)

And yesterday, I finished the photography of all of the figures I have in hand right now (an additional eight figures to review), so I'll be doing some quick touchups on the shots and then start writing the reviews. I kind of want to spread them out a little because I haven't been buying figures as much in the last month (everything I've purchased so far was purchased in my first four months of collecting -- talk about money burning a hole in the pocket). Once this batch is reviewed, I'm going to have to be more careful about my spending so that I can continue getting good reviews of great figures uploaded. Maybe I can get a job working for one of the manufacturers to review their products, and they'll send me copies!! LOLOLOL

victorviper (17 days ago) #70731010Interesting review, as I was kicking around the idea of doing a review of this one myself.
While it looks like you have an affinity for the character, I'm just vaguely aware of the Air Gear franchise, and I simply thought this was a very neat looking figure. Not having read the (vast!) Air Gear manga, I did not realize that she is scarcely seen in this particular getup.
Back in the day, there was some back and forth about this figure; it seems like the prevailing opinion was that her face was a little too soft and her glare was not as severe as it could/should have been.

I knew this was an older figure, but it's very interesting to hear that there was discourse about her expression at the time.

The thing that is somewhat sad about the Ringo character in the story is that she is rarely in a really happy mood. Most of the time, she has a very concerned look on her face (because Ikki is ALWAYS getting into trouble). Other times, she's just plain pissed off and is ready to kick some serious butt (like in this figure). I'll have to see if I can find a scan of the page with this outfit and share it ... next to a scan with a beautiful smile. I wouldn't want people to think that she isn't really a beauty within as well as outside. :)

TIL there's a figure for Air Gear.

Ringo looks great. Even though the outfit is skimpy, I always find that skimpy outfits is much sexier than pure nudity. Even though I question why is there a pole attached to her collar (ain't that heavy), it totally enhances the risque-ness to it.

Also, even though the way her straps is moving against the wind, the way you photograph her backside makes it seem like her strap is censoring her butt — very tasteful (and indirect) censorship.

I also love how Ringo is with Asuna, both are very stark contrast to each other and I actually like it.

PanchitoMatte Emilia-tan Maji Tenshi!
The sex appeal of this figure is through the roof, in my opinion. A head that is proportionate to her body, breasts that are realistically large, eyes that are much closer in style and size to our own, hair that is a believable length, and is that a nose bridge that I see?! I see damn near no flaws. Bravo, Yamato.

To think, this figure was released in 2008...
