Blogging and its future here on MFCBlogging and its future here on MFC

Blogging

In the past week or so the community has spoken about a few topics which peeked my interest. Note this is not figurine related but in a way it is site related. So I have never blogged in my life till I came here to this site and I have to say that for the most part since I stayed mainly neutral in all my blogs that I have found it a nice and enjoyable experience unlike some people here. To those people I feel for you and I am sorry that the community treated you in such a way that you did not feel comfortable to keep blogging.

Now here is my concern and to some it may seem a little weird but to me it is something that I am proud of. You see Blogging to me took some courage especially at my age and I did not know how everyone would react to them blogs I wrote. I was always trying to be insightful and inspired when I wrote them.

Someone said in passing in comments in a blog that the site may at some point to go, disappear. I have had many sites that I like actually do this but none of which I had such a vested interest in. You see in the past I kept a diary yes that was way long ago but it was a medium that I like to write in. I wrote in an MORPG style game back in the late 90's early 2000. I managed to save all my posts I have 30 revolving characters that I wrote and I always had interest for other readers that would introduce a character of their own and thus interaction and the story line flowed. I was lucky to have saved all that writing as that site went down.

Now not that I am wanting this to happen to the site at all. I do have to face that eventuality that at some point it may come down to it thought; we just do not know when. I would love to keep the blogs that I have written here but not just for me in an word type document on my PC. I would like to have them posted on some sort of platform for bloggers.

A few questions for those that have read till here:

Has anyone else thought of doing this for themselves?
Would you feel bad if all of your writing were to just vanish?
Have you researched where you would post your blogs your stories?

I do hope that the site stay online for decades to come so I and many others can continue to write to our heart's content but if the inevitable happens I would love to be able to say that others can read what I have gone thought with this hobby that we call figurine collecting .

I look forward to comments below.

Well I have to admit that if the article section gets shut down, that would be a bummer for me. I've tried setting up my own blog site, but I get much more traction here when I post an article. For me, the article section is one of the main things that got me involved with the community beyond merely using this site as a way to keep track of my collection.

Thank you to all that posted thus far and thank you to all the people that read the article. I am always glad to see that I can come up with interesting topics which create some feed back.

So it seems that WordPress is the place to go to blog even thought it may not be exactly what I am looking for. I was hopping that someone would have a site or location where when you insert your post everything would be posted including photos. even if its just a url to the photo and the picture is not stored on the site itself but can be viewed.

I have read through all the comments and it was an interesting read. I understand that no one wants to loose such a precious DB and nor would I. But my writing is also very important to me and thus looking it being something that I wrote and created would affect me more then loosing the DC. No offense to everyone that put in hour upon hour to input data and keep the site going. Just like you people that keep the site running and updated feel pride in what you I I do as well with writing.

Once again thanks to all the teams of people that keep this wonderful site going.

If anyone else has ideals about a good please to back up my blogs then please share.

if blogs vanished, how would i be able to see all of your cute cats?!

look, if MFC gets rid of the ability to talk to each other through blogs and completely gets rid of all social platforms, it'll be kinda strange. like sure you can still write reviews, but how many reviews can possibly be written? maybe i'm misunderstanding the question, but i honestly don't get why it's a bad thing for people to talk about things that are not figures but kind of relate to figures and the community. like would people rather the blogs be very very slow, like 1-2 a day max, and only be about figures? or would people rather have there be a variety of topics and talk to each other? idk, i just don't get why it's a bad thing to talk about things other than figures (and if shop blogs aren't allowed, then it's like you can't even talk about figure related things lol!)

but if that's what MFC wants, so mote it be! it's the admin and mods choices on what's allowed, and if they don't want discussions via blogs, i'm not gonna push it and make blogs that aren't about figures anymore.

Interesting blog on a very actual topic

But lets face it blogs here have gone of the rail & the rules need to be straight-ed out asap so that everybody can feel enjoy blogging here again.

To answer you questions.

Has anyone else thought of doing this for themselves?

Yes i have thought of and i liked to review price figures but i just do not have the time atm.

Would you feel bad if all of your writing were to just vanish?

At this point no because it starting to feel like something it should not be.

Have you researched where you would post your blogs your stories?

Yes but if it is still here i will use it here on MFC.

A few questions for those that have read till here:

I've thought about it, particularly as I've seen the general activity on here dwindle. This latest shitshow with the blogs got me thinking about it some more.

Would you feel bad if all of your writing were to just vanish?

That would kind of suck, but I would probably get over it.

Have you researched where you would post your blogs your stories?

I'd probably buy a domain name, as there are a few figure blogs I read who have been able to succeed using that model, but ultimately that is a huge hassle - registering and re-registering the domain, getting found in search engines, and probably MFC wouldn't take kindly to advertising an external site in any postings on here.

I've seen this show before - once very active sites that just sort of fizzle out over time. The endgame is that either the site survives but no one bothers to read it, or you have a very small number of dedicated people that keep using it.

Over ten years ago, there used to be quite a community of figure blogs on WordPress. WP had really good SEO back then, so it was easy to get noticed (and find good stuff) through Google searches, compared to nowadays when search results are 99% sites that pay to show up. We'd also share our blogs through the community portion of Danny Choo's website, which later became figure.fm, before it was shut down, and his site became solely personal. I'd love to be able to see my posts on there, but at least my old (highly embarrassing) WordPress blog still exists. About a year ago, I tried making a new one for fun, but I realised that even if I tagged my posts, no one was going to find them, and there weren't really any active otaku blogs to look at and interact with. :/ *shrug* By the way, I find the posts on that newer WP really good, but it's probably just me appealing to my tastes, haha.)

When this site dies, the thing I'll miss most are the photos.

I like reading people's comments and more of a lurker actually. On other message boards I rarely start a thread, but this article section seems very quiet at times. Even a lurker needs something to lurk at, so I started writing to generate discussion, it's just for fun and mostly on lighthearted topics.
Few days ago I wrote to ask what others think about this site and it garnered positive responses, people were praising the database and are not too bothered by the negativity. So as long as the database holds up, I think this site will be around for a long time. Cheer up ^^

I write just to write, but only when I have a topic that may interest others too. Otherwise, I would just write elsewhere.

Would you feel bad if all of your writing were to just vanish?
rn not really, if you mean just the ones on MFC. I'd feel worse if the database were to vanish. There was a time I would feel bad for a disappearing community (and all its written content.) I remember my fave Prince of Tennis forum which closed down in 2006. At the time, it felt like a big loss so I went through the whole userlist to try to add everyone to MSN Messenger to keep in touch like an annoying kid :p ended up being online friends with a few until MSN Messenger died too, after which maybe a couple ended up on my Facebook, and now my fb is deactivated... similar stuff happened with a local anime forum. Its userbase migrated and dwindled, and eventually got wholly replaced by everyone but locals. The site is still there but dying/ mostly inactive with broken links.

If you meant all as in all my writing everywhere then yea. That'd be years and hundreds of pages of research and work gone which would have a big personal impact :/

Have you researched where you would post your blogs your stories?
I have a few online blogs, some abandoned many years back, the ones I still maintain are on wordpress (text-based), tumblr (image-based) and in private google docs (research and commonplace stuff.) I lurk on reddit a bit but I don't intend to post much there.

Technically I did have that happen to me, but it was my fault. I had what? Close to 200 articles to my name and decided to burn them all with no backups. Fun times. So if I lost all my blogs (and this time through no fault of my own) I wouldn’t be too upset. Now would I actually try blogging somewhere else? No. Already tried a Wordpress and... in the end I kinda didn’t care for it. I did some blogging on DeviantArt before burning them all. Same with fan fiction; wrote a bunch and burned it all to the ground. At least with Wordpress I decided to not burn everything.

These days when it comes to writing I do ghost writing so if MFC went away I’d likely just work more on that and dust off that old Wordpress... or burn it down and start a new one.

If the database shuts down it would be sad, but i made my own blogpage so all my figure reviews would be saved.
