glow in the dark figures?glow in the dark figures?

galabluegalablue13 days agoAsk MFC
hey guys

so i've started Fire Force on crunchyroll and it's nothing like what i expected, which is a good thing. i really like the art style so far and i'm having fun with the cool concept. it's a good change from isekai and idols, which have been my norms these nights.

well, the reason why i had this anime in my queue was actually two figures from koto that kept popping up on their front page (they come with preorder bonuses), so when i finished love live i finally stepped into the show and i am thankful i did.

well, ITEM #863395 and ITEM #863392 are on my want list now and i'll prob preorder them to get the bonuses, but...

wait a second, are those jackets glow in the dark like in the show? man, that's so cool! i didn't know they glowed in the dark when i had first started looking at them. i only found out today when checking out the bonuses on MFC.

but wait -- how does someone like me, who likes to display figures, display glow in the dark figures when i want a good night sleep and i like it DARK. like so dark you can't see your hands in front of your face (my friend said that the other night when she slept over lol).

so does anyone have any other figure comparisons that have "glow in the dark" elements? i'm guessing it wouldn't be so bright, and it's a really cool concept, but maybe just not for near my bed lol. (and yeah, i'm guessing they wouldn't be THAT bright, and i am guessing they would lose their "glow" over time?)

thanks in advance

and here are some pics so you don't have to go through the images

It's cool! especially under the dim light. I'm just a noob so this kind of thing fascinates me lol

leith (13 days ago) #71075565Wow, I didn't know there are figures with glow in the dark feature right off the purchase. I reckon we have to DIY that sort of thing using a special paint. Figure manufacturers get really creative nowadays ^^
Maybe next is light-up feature? like ITEM #58001

darkroseblast (13 days ago) #71075010The figures are not glow-in-the-dark, as someone pointed out to me when I thought the same thing before. If you go their item pages on Koto's Japanese site their descriptions say they only glow under black light.

omg thank you both! i totally thought they were glow in the dark rather than black light. i should have assumed they were black light reactive. thank you guys for clearing this up!

It's not a figure, but I have this Saint Tail wand that has some glow in the dark parts: PICTURE #2340720 I tested it out after seeing this post; I didn't think it would have much glow since there's not a lot of sun in my living room, but there was some, and there was a lot of glow (as you can see from the picture) when I charged it with my phone's flashlight.

As mentioned before I'm not sure how well actual glow in the dark paint would work on figures, but it's definitely out there. I picked up some from Amazon and I'm testing it on a small nendo accessory I'm customizing (I'll do a little write-up about it when I'm done but it might be a few more months haha). So far it's definitely not as strong of a glow as you'd get from pure strontium aluminate powder, but hopefully with a few more coats it'll look better.

That might be why more companies don't want to use it since they don't want to have a bunch of disappointed customers who were expecting a stronger glow, but it's really cool that companies are starting to experiment with black light phosphorescence!

If Kotobukiya can do this then Union Creative should have implemented it with their Gantz figures, they would have looked even better!

Fluorescence ≠ Phosphorescence

A lot of figures have elements that fluoresce under black light.
But that's not 'glow in the dark'.
I guess in 99% of the time just a coincidence that this specific colour also has a fluorescence effect.
Maybe sometimes a kind of security feature so that it can be distinguished from bootlegs?
Because sometimes there are spots and stains that light up in a different colour under blacklight while under normal light can't be seen.

But I would also be afraid that having them under constant UV light the figure (paint) might fade.

But it's quite interesting to have a short glimpse at them while using a UV flashlight.

If you're interested in that.
There are 2 kind of UV lamps.
395nm and 365 nm.
For figures I'd even say the 395nm is the better choice because the light is darker.
365nm normally also include a lot more of white/visible light.
Might easily mistaken for a unbright flashlight until pointed to something that fluoresces.
I also suggest to not look directly into the light.
Especially when it's 365nm.

The benefit of the 365nm is that it also make things glow the 395nm can't.
In other words.
A 395nm lamp shows some security features of a passport or a money bill.
A 365nm shows all of them.

That'd be pretty cool to see more glow in the dark figures... The only con I see about it is that we're probably missing out on the sculpt details that we won't see in the dark.

Although, I'll probably lol in RL if I see all my Mikus glowing in the dark and staring at me

Also, I have a wall light switch that glows in the dark and frick that's annoying as heck. My solution is to bury yourself in blankets... or buy an eye mask like this: https://www.1999.co.jp/itbig58/10587219.jpg
