It's been a month since my last written review and I just received the latest figure to add to my collection so I thought it would be nice to write another review. And I had also just gotten myself a new phone (finally retired my Samsung Galaxy S5 - yes S5, I have been using that trusty one for almost 6 years now - all my photos in the reviews and gallery have been taken with that phone hence the less-than-optimal quality) so I wanted to try out the new camera.

REVIEW: Portrait of Pirates "Sailing Again" Viola
My latest figure is the Megahouse Portrait of Pirates Sailing Again figure of Viola from the series One Piece. This is a pretty old figure, released in 2015 - I had been looking to get her for a good price, and recently managed to purchase her preowned for a total of JPY 5,900 inclusive of postage. The figure is based off the scene where Viola is dancing the flamenco in the Dressrosa arc.

THE BOX: 8.0/10
The box is standard Megahouse Portrait of Pirates fare, with the main window showcasing the figure and various images of the figure over the box front, sides and back. I have realized that as I collect more figures (and boxes), I have come to see the POP box design as rather plain somehow. I like the colour scheme in here though with the purple and red, it gives off a romantic vibe which Viola is typically associated with. The window is done nicely in the form of a brick archway, also typical of the building designs in Dressrosa.

I got mine preowned, so two surfaces of the box are somewhat discoloured - but I don't mind at all so long as the figure is intact.

The packaging is very secure and not too big at all - so it's very nice in terms of shipping fees.

THE BASE: 8.0/10
The base is again the standard POP base - but Viola's does come with a nice blackish shading over the periphery which surrounds the central magenta colour. Her name on the base is spelled Violet, a name interchangeably used with Viola for the character.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/08/2402851.jpeg

The base is nothing to shout about, but the colour shading is pretty and the figure stands very stable on it so it pretty much does its job. The base is also compact so the figure does not take up unnecessary space.

THE SCULPT: 9.0/10
THE PAINT: 8.0/10

The figure comes in several parts - the main body, two heads, two switchable arms and the base.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/08/2402852.jpeg

This Viola has two interchangeable heads - one of her smiling and another of her in the midst of a wink while biting a rose. I personally felt that the face sculpt was not too accurate to the character. One of Viola's defining characteristics (for me at least) were her prominently full lips and it was almost nonexistent in this figure (both heads), which instead gave her a more adorable appearance. The skin was also coloured fairer in the figure compared to the anime character. Other than that, her eyes and lashes are done very well.

Her hair is sculpted well, with the gold hairpin and the rose on the left side of her head.

Hands are sculpted well, her nails are painted pearly.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/08/2402892.jpeg

And moving on to the part that really makes this figure pop, is her beautiful flamenco dress. The sculpt and paint here is very nice - I love the gloss of the maroon frills of her dress. The dress is sculpted very nicely to accentuate her body curves (besides her very generous bosom, you can even see the navel impression).

I love that the sculpt of the dress frills are rather dynamic - they seem to flare out at different angles and are not similar at different tiers. It lends great effect to the dress movement, rather than if they were sculpted all hanging limply downward.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/08/2402882.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/08/2402881.jpeg

There is messy paintwork on several parts of the dress on closer inspection. There are maroon paint bleeds over the white, and white bleeds over the frills.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/08/2402880.jpeg https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/08/2402893.jpeg

This shot is to show the figure hugging sculpt of her dress extends nicely to her bottom - and if you pay attention to the frills, the sculpt is pretty much discontinuous on one of the tiers.

Her heels are purple just like the anime, and sit very well on the base.

THE POSE: 9.0/10
One of the main things I love about this figure is the variety of poses it has. This Viola figure has a total of four different poses. My favourite pose is definitely the one where she has the rose in her mouth, with one arm across her chest (I have no idea if there's a name for this dance position). She looks especially elegant in this particular pose.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/08/2402890.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/08/2402891.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/08/2402889.jpeg

Depending on how you view her, she may look really slanted to one side. This is her starting pose (the pose you get her readily in the box), and I took the photo slightly to one side compared to the earlier three poses, and she looks to really lean off in here (and the angle of her limbs may seem especially strange at certain views).

Side views.

FINAL THOUGHTS
All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by how well-made the figure was. I loved her pose, she looks beautifully in motion and there's a bonus of four posing choices to choose from. The dress is beautiful and elegant, and despite having pretty obvious paint flaws, I find that I do not mind them all that much (especially as they are unnoticeable on display). The base and figure box are relatively small, so the shipping fee will not be painful if you are looking to get her. She is definitely worth it if you could get her at a good price.

If you are a Viola fan or a fan of the Dressrosa arc in general, she is highly recommended. I am actually not a fan of Viola (I just see her as one of the members in the Sanji 'harem' XD And I am still waiting for my Pudding, damn it Megahouse!) but I wanted to build a Dressrosa collection so I got her - and she definitely does not disappoint. I would rate her a 9.0 out of 10.

And that's all for my review this time, hope you enjoyed reading (if you have reached this far) and see you another day. PS. I was supposed to get a review out on the Myethos Stardust figure (which I recently purchased), but due to a limit of display space and the figure being unexpectedly almost brand-new, I didn't want to take her out, remove all the sticky tape and then stick her back in the box - so she's staying put in the box for now.

PROS
- Beautiful dynamic pose
- Eye-catching colour scheme of the dress
- Small base
- Relatively small box

CONS
- Messy paintwork and sculpt over the dress
- Pose may come off strange when viewed at certain angles
- Face not wholly accurate to character

Cloudberry4 months ago#76239534What a really interesting dress! I really like her dress; this figure totally invokes an image of Viola dancing to the tune of the flamenco. The paint bleed is a bummer but it's a pretty neat dress!
However, I do agree about you about the pose being a bit odd. Sometimes, I see an extravagant flamenco dress and other times, I think of a tall strawberry shortcake:

I myself was willing to forgive the messy paintwork because I thought they did a pretty good job with the dress overall.

Yee-gads, the dress though ... I do like the weight of it -- dresses like that are heavy, and it's pulling at the right spots to make it seem like it's pulling down while she dances. However, the painting on it ... I was just really disappointed to see how sloppy that was!

I was also surprised to find many spots on the dress with messy paintwork, especially as a figure coming from Megahouse. Funnily enough, the mistakes don't really appear over the front part of the dress so I guess that's a good thing in terms of display XD

Thunderr4 months ago#76209599I never got into Pop figures but I really love the expression of Violet and her pose. It's not as boring as the others in my opinion. The color scheme that they chose also matches the one from the anime and the quality seems very good.
This was a nice blog to read and very enjoyable. :)

Thanks for reading, I am glad you enjoyed it :D Yeah, she's definitely one of the more dynamic ones from the POP series.

NelsonFR4 months ago#76209356I miss those kind of pop figures, when they were about something in the series, nowdays is just the girls showing off their curves in bikini.
Same. This figure actually marks the final female POP in my wishlist. None of the new female POPs have been of interest to me personally, except maybe Carrot. The rest are just crazy pricetags, and overdone body proportions.
