Which cost do you hate the most?Which cost do you hate the most?

Hi fellow collectors,
I think we unanimously agree that anime figures are expensive. To make our lives more miserable, there are various costs incurred when we buy a figure. Up until recently, I take the costs for granted. I mean the shipping cost is quite high but I heard it is costly to ship things locally in Japan as well. Also, the package doesn’t magically appear on my doorstep so I think it’s well earned. I don’t want to go all the way to Japan just to buy some figures XD.
I don’t use any forwarder and my total order is always below de minimus value (the price threshold below which fewer or no taxes are charged on shipments). I started collecting only a few years ago and the exchange rate has been quite stable (the recent development makes me wary though). So far so good...
Earlier this year I ordered some figures and the package arrived last month. To my surprise, I got charged with customs duties and taxes! Apparently, there was a change in regulation. They remove the threshold so all international orders are now charged with duties and taxes. It’s about 20% of my total order and honestly, I felt ripped off. Nominally it’s not much cause I’m a collector with a very modest budget, but that’s precisely why! There is a little leeway on my budget lol. To put it bluntly, the cost has zero benefits for me and with that money I can get 1 figure for every 5 figures I buy. God I hate customs!
Originally, my plan for this year is to finish off my wishlist and take a long rest afterward (like Thanos LMAO). Now, I’m unsure of what to do...
Sorry for rambling, anyway I wonder which additional cost do you hate the most and how do you deal with it?
Do you bite the bullet and get on with it?
Or it affects you so you either increase your budget or decrease your spending?

Customs fees. It's a rip-off which has no reason to me other than 'we're taking your money coz we can'.

Btw you don't want to deal with customs Cloud, they operate pretty much like mafia. The only difference is they keep your waifu as a hostage instead of your actual wife lol. Then they demand money and you have to comply with their request otherwise you'll never see your beloved again. Heck they even charge a certain amount per day if you make a late payment.

WTF. Basically:

What I dislike the most is the subset of customs duty - the "processing fee".

I can live with paying 15% sales tax if my package happens to get picked (the randomness of that is annoying). But a $9.95 "processing fee" by Canada Post is outrageous. The courier processing fees are worse. It's like a tax on tax and often times more expensive than the actual taxes collected.

This is why I've shifted most of my purchases to Amazon Japan when possible. The shipping price isn't super great compared to small packet (unless it's a heavy toy), but there are way too many pluses that I've shifted to them: (a) they have lowest price guarantee on preorders (b) they refund if the actual taxes are less (happens pretty much every purchase) and never collect more (c) there is no tax processing fee (big savings) (d) they remove Japanese sales tax from the price (another big savings) (e) the shipping is SUPER fast to the east coast (even if the box frequently gets beat up and DHL customer service sucks) and (f) they often (not always, which is annoying) split grouped preorders into multiple shipments if the release dates are far apart at no extra cost.

No cancellations allowed after the preorder end date means I also have to be absolutely freaking certain I want the item, which is good for impulse management.

I hate customs and how arbitrary it is. Sometimes I'll get huge expensive packages and be totally fine, sometimes they'll just slap an extra $65 fee on me. Who knows why? If it was at least consistent, I could plan for it...

ACELUCKY (22 days ago) #76509601I have considered purchasing a few figures from Amazon Japan in the past. However, I have actually heard that they do not package figures that well anymore. Especially if you want an undamaged figure box (Some of us collectors are weird like this... lol). Which is why I have just sticked with AmiAmi, HobbySearch, Solaris Japan, and RightStuf (Last resort place to buy).
Have you noticed any changes in their Packaging quality as of recent? I might give them another look if these claims of poor packaging are not true. I do appreciate the idea. Thank You.

Probably have gotten about 15 figures from them over the past 5 months. Never had a problem with damaged figures or damaged figure boxes. I can't say the same thing about stuff sent EMS shipping from Asia. I ordered a figure from AnimeNPC and although they packed it well, the figure box was still damaged. The outside box was substantially damaged so that indicated to me that the shipper mishandled my package and caused the figure box to also be crushed due to the mishandling. This was EMS shipping so it cost about $40-45 to ship the figure that way. That's one reason why I've mostly switched to Amazon Japan because you can pay a large amount for EMS shipping from an major Asian seller but it still doesn't guarantee that the figure/figure box won't arrive undamaged so why pay the extra money.

dtindcarea (22 days ago) #76509549Amazon Japan typically only charges 1,600 yen for DHL Express shipping (takes 3-5 days typically to US) just to let you know. You can also save per figure shipping costs by ordering multiple figures. For example, I bought 4 figures (1/4, 1/8, 1/7 and 1/7 scales) and the total shipping cost was 3,400 yen which is about 850 yen per figure. Amazon Japan packs figures well also. I don't think any other Japanese-based major figure seller comes close to those shipping costs.

ACELUCKY (23 days ago) #76468564I consider myself lucky to live in the US and not once have to worry about custom fees.
However, for me its shipping costs. I almost always use EMS for my figures, I have started to notice that my 1/4 scales have gone from 4K in EMS shipping to 5K or even 6K in rare cases recently. I understand that 1/4 scale figures are large, but why the increase of 1K in less than a year. I understand inflation in currency, but this is just ridiculous...

Customs. Hands down.
The time I ordered something that exchanged to about £15.20, 20 pence over the threshold and got whacked with an additional £15 as a charge -___- I know it happens but goddamn man, you can't waver the fee for twenty bloody pence.

Customs hitting minuscule parcels with manga or CD’s in getting whacked with CF and then a Royal Mail charge adding anything from £10-£30 on top of the original cost because they are a piece of crap lmfao

Then weirdly my last parcel which had this ITEM #822786 in was delivered but had a customs charge on saying it needed paying before getting to my door... but was never actually issued as a charge beforehand? I usually get a text and letter through my mailbox saying it needs to be paid but, nope, they’ve sent nothing about since. <<

I’m due a zenmarket parcel with two cd’s and an unboxed nendoroid in before the end of the month, unless shipping becomes restricted, interested to see what happens with that

Definitely custom fees, I still haven´t figured out exactly how much they got to slap on in Austria (I think 20%) but in Chile I remember getting a set of Neko Atsume Mugs and correos never notified me of their arrival so they not only sent the mugs back to Japan but expected me to pay for them holding onto them for two weeks ._.

Think it was last year, or maybe earlier, sweden started to have a screening an all incoming packages, reason: there are so many packages coming from China and we can't hire more people to screen it. However this meant that everything is now checked, 25% tax is applied to the total cost, including shipping, and that you have to pay a fee regardless of them doing anything. Besides, the second it goes into customs, all kinds of tracking cease to work. So when it arrives you're like.. ohh hey... I paid for that.. 3 weeks ago...
