Custom Clay: Howl ...kinda...Custom Clay: Howl ...kinda...Diary

・。*∘˚✽ HI THERE! ✽˚∘*・
Soo what led me to this attempt of a semi figure-like-looking pile of clay? Well those last few days were supposed to be study intensive and productive in order to become a functional member of society… so of course little me found some kind of distraction like I always do :3 This time I found myself looking at my figure shelf thinking to myself: „This one spot would be perfect for a sitting figure… but I don’t have a sitting figure… damn… could I make one?“… Well the answer to that was: „No. No you can‘t.“
But I didn’t knew that yet.

So I went to the artsy store a few blocks down the road and bought air drying clay. In hindsight I should have informed myself about which kind of clay would work best, but as you probably guessed this wasn’t really a well thought out plan.

As for which character I would go for: It had to be Howl from Howls Moving Castle. Thats the guy I’m talking about (and also the guy who would transform me into a brick for daring to say that the pile of clay I mutilated had any kind of resemblence to him):

I started by sketching out his pose:

And then I started sculpting and messing up. I wanted him to match with my other 1/8 scale boys… but I didn’t anticipate how much the clay would shrink while drying^^ (Does anyone know if that is a common thing? Or are there better air drying clays out there?) He turned out to have a 1/9 scale body, 1/8 scale head and 1/1 ego.
Besides that I’m quite happy with his body:

It went downhill from here on out^^ His hands freaked me out. His fingers teared off everytime I tried to add some details.

His eyes. OMG. While sculpting his head I focused on his nose so hard I totally missed that the places I wanted his eyes to be should be like… flat. Only while painting I realised that his head is pointy like the peg of some bird. Now his eyes are long from the side and little dots from a frontal view… fantastic^^

Another thing I regret is how I placed his cape. I wanted it to slide off his shoulder. Now I think I should have kept it symmetrical or cut one centimeter off his right side (left if you look at him from the front) because there is just way too much going on on his right^^. It kinda messes up the „harmony“ or some shit.

And the part which bugs me the most is his hair. I had to add one layer of colour after another until the bright colour FINALLY conceiled the grey of the clay. Went to bed and woke up to this bumpy mess ಥ_ಥ Well… luckily with the right lighting and both eyes closed the bumpiness isn’t that apparent.

Do I regret all of this? The clay cost me 8€ so no^^
Would I do it again? … It was fun until I got to his hands and face… maybe I would do better with monsters… like Hakus dragon form from Spirited Away or something like that…
If anything, this experience made me appreciate all those works of art Kotobukiya and Co create even more ♥ ✽˚∘*・

Soo that’s the result of me trying to find the right lightning and angle to hide the bumpiness of his hair:

What can I say… he turned out way better than I thought he would and way worse than I’d like him to. But working on a figure with your own two hands will tend to make you very biased haha. I love him and I feel like one of those mothers claiming their child to be the most beautiful baby in existence although there is a food growing out of their face.

Let’s hope all of our favourite characters get scale announcements soon so we only have to worry about how to grow a third kidney to sell.

・。*∘˚✽ Have a nice day! ✽˚∘*・

dollbyn3 months ago#78470379I wish I had the dedication! I can really appreciate people who make custom nendos, it takes a lot of commitment, figuring out the parts you need, and buying them all. Maybe once I trim down a lot of what I have I might find the motivation, lol. I'd love to have a cute little Sophie with a tiny Calcifer. ♥Yeah it takes a lot of time (and sometimes money^^), but I'd love to see your Sophie :D If you ever find enough motivation: there are shops like Chibi Chop Shop selling separate Nendo-parts. Makes it a little bit easier ;)

Ayanah3 months ago#78378771Ohww thank youuu~ (/•‸•)/♥ I'd love to have Sophie in my Nendosquad, but there are soo many characters on my potential to-do-list. Donno if I'll get to her anytime soon... Would also absolutely looove to have Howl in his birdy form (✪-✪)˚∘˚*・ Do you plan on making Howl or Sophie? :D

dollbyn3 months ago#78328395Bruh, this is so RAD. :) From the way you were talking about the end result and the article title, I was definitely imagining something much rougher than this, lol. But he looks really good! You have a lot of skill and hopefully you continue to build on that. Ngl, I am envious of your cute custom Nendos! Especially Howl since Howl's Moving Castle is def one of my favorite Ghibli movies. ♥ Do you plan on trying to make a Sophie to go with your Howl some day?Ohww thank youuu~ (/•‸•)/♥ I'd love to have Sophie in my Nendosquad, but there are soo many characters on my potential to-do-list. kiizato3 months ago#78269895I've been working with clay for 7 years and I can honestly say this is so impressive. I know working with clay can be frustrating but, wow...this turned out fantastic. Howl is a great character, I believe you did him justice!
You've inspired me to maybe consider trying to make a figure one day. :) <3
Awww thank you sooo much! ༼ ✪‸✪ ༽ Your comment made me incredibly happy ♥ 7 years with this moody clay and you're still at it. That's truly inspirational. You are a clay-sensei if there ever was one. Can't wait to see which character you'll bring to life! :D

TomTheCat3 months ago#78270496Your writeup is hilarious, I love it! But when I saw the result, wow. From your ramblings, I didn't expect him to look as great as he does. Sure, he does have some flaws, but for a first-time attempt, it's really quite good. Can't wait to see your next project :DHaha glad you appreciate my gallows humor ;) His flaws really bug me, but by now they also motivate me to start a new project and try to avoid them... will probably make a bunch of new mistakes XD But as long as I can laugh about it everything's fine ;) Thanks for the encouragement!! ♥

Nagisa_Momoe3 months ago#78273008you did wonderful!!! i think you captured him really well, nailed the vibe from the sketch perfectly. everyone starts somewhere, too. ease up on yourself if you ever attempt anything again in the future! if this was your first try it's really impressive- + there's nothing wrong w making mistakes lol
journaling your process and noting what goes wrong is a good way to learn for the future- if you ever post one of these again id love to see it! :D
Thank youu~ and thanks a lot for the encouragement! ♥ You guys really make me wanna give it another try. Yeah...I felt the urge to rant a bit^^ But you're right. All the better if my pain makes some of the readers or future me laugh a little :3

Taralen3 months ago#78272963It honestly doesn't look that bad. Some stuff can be amazing with air drying clay, but I prefer epoxy sculpt since it feels the most like plastic. I still have a sculpt I want to work on but meh finding motivation is tough lmfao Thank youuu~ :3 Yeah some guys also mentioned epoxy sculpt. Think I'll try to get my hands on some :) Oooh I'd love to see your sculpt (✪ヮ✪) Haha my motivation is on its peek whenever I'm even less motivated for other stuff ;) Like learning fiscal law XD
