Decluttering a Collection?Decluttering a Collection?Ask MFC

As I guess a lot of people have issues with, after collecting for some time now space is starting to become a pretty scarce commodity in where I can display my collection. Even small items eventually mount up to become quite the space hog, which isn't something I was necessarily counting on when I first started to get properly into buying goods! So I was wondering if anybody has been in the same sort of position, and whether anybody had any tips on how to effectively declutter their collection?

Perhaps a bit more specifically, I was wondering whether anybody has been in the position where they have wanted to declutter one particular theme or element from their collection entirely, and have been able to do so without being left with bits and pieces left over?

Thank you for any suggestions or replies!

I'm also trying to declutter collection right now and I'm trying to change up my entire display. I think, like many people here, I have many more items to display that the actual space I have.
My own collection is mostly the Dead Or Alive theme, but I also have shelves for other animes and other hobbies. It's really hard trying to maintain all of them and I tend to make most of it the Dead Or Alive theme only. I'm thinking of displaying everything else together, instead of giving each their own shelf. Also, I notice I want to display too many things at the same time, so I shouldn't be afraid of storing figures/items instead.
Lately I decided to put all my Figmas on just one shelf and it looks quite cozy, but before I never thought it would fit. Basically, experimenting gets you to new ideas.

Some suggestions I can give from my own experience are: Don't try to display everything you have (put less interesting items back in their boxes). If you have many figures/items to display on the same shelf, don't be afraid to put them close to each other (depends on preference though). Displaying small and random merchandise is not always necessary.
Finally, try something new. If your collection was cluttered before, try going for a spacey one with minimalistic look. Or perhaps try to display figures of different series together, for example by sorting on colour or scale instead of just series. A good one is also don't display small items with their boxes or in my case too many videogames.

In a similar vein, MFC lists were extremely helpful when planning this Detolf display

IceDragoness1 month ago#81814592If I get a high quality scale I will sell off cheaper prize figures of the same character, unless I really like them.
Could also repurpose them for display somewhere else (eg. at work) if you wouldn't get very much back for them otherwise (after shipping, etc.)

Yeah, like Chloe said, I like to mix my collection in with other things I am interested in. I think it helps the overall look of a collection as when it's just straight figures it can sometimes lose it's spark. However, I would be careful about purging/selling right away. I would put the figure back in its box and live without it for a while and see if you miss it. Sometimes, when I declutter, I am too eager to just purge things and then I end up missing them later in life.

I also like to evaluate what I am collecting and narrow it down. I've narrowed it down over the years to certain manufacturers, shows I have watched, and characters I like. By doing this I cut down on my preorders. My collection isn't that big but I'm starting to hit a point (including my wished and preorders) that I think that'll be enough figures, and I really don't want to start drowning in them. They're just one of my hobbies, and not even my main one (but definitely starting to be my more expensive one...)

I also stay away from key chains and I don't buy plushes, but I am gifted them.

I only decluttered my collection once, when I went from collecting cheap figures to high quality scales / premium action figures. Most of it wasn't really worth anything, so instead of goin through all the trouble of selling it, I gave them away to friends with kids and donated some to a local kindergarten.

If you don't like parts of your collection anymore, I'd suggest packing them away for a while to see if you would miss them or not. If you don't, go ahead and sell them. If you have a lot of a specific series you could offer them together as a lot. You probably wouldn't get the same ammount of money, if you'd sell everything individually, but you could get rid of it easier & faster.

If it's just a space problem, you could try to rearrange your room / replace some of your furniture. I did this not too long ago. At the beginning of the year I replaced 2 detolfs with one big besta. I got a lot of new figures since then, so as soon as I ran out of space, I thought about how I could use my room smarter. I rearranged a lot of things, replaced my tv table with one of the low bestas and after moving some other stuff, I got room for at least 2 more big Bestas, if I need it.

Thank you! I've had the same displays for a number of years now, so it's long been overdue for a change! I hope that your decluttering goes well too!

Chloe-tsundere1 month ago#81771040I just sell stuff I don't feel the spark for and make other themes.
For those left over, I will consider selling later on or maybe decorate with other items so it still looks good.
For example your fig has crystals near it. I will add my crystal collection with it making it look neat.
Or is it an anime elf? Put my dragons near it.
Or whatever items you got, you can do leaves you find and use that with an elf... And so on. Be creative with what you got of can find

That definitely sounds like a nice idea, and one that I hadn't thought of!
