My First Nendoroid

I was inspired after writing my previous article on my favorite Nendoroid, so I've decided to write a piece on my first Nendoroid! She is... Black Rock Shooter!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/10/17/2543152.jpeg

This one has a story to her. I first discovered Nendoroids back in late 2011, having been into anime for nearly 2 years at that point after being introduced to it by an online friend (and many years of watching dubbed stuff like Sonic X, Hamtaro, and Naruto on American TV). Nendoroids were actually the first anime figures I was ever introduced to! I found them when I was looking for Hatsune Miku-related stuff and spotted ITEM #186. My first thoughts were, "WOAH! That's way too cute! How is that real? How is it possible!?" and "I have to have one!".

Then I found out there were even more of them. I spent awhile deliberating on which one I wanted, and it ended up being a battle between Nymph and BRS. I hadn't seen Nymph's source material (and still haven't), I just thought she was super cute, but in the end BRS won out. So my mom and I searched for one at a reasonable price, and found her for around $40 on eCrater. I was overjoyed, and we ordered her. She arrived and...

she was a bootleg.

I didn't realize it at first, but once I realized, I was so upset that I got ripped off. I kept her for awhile, but at some point she got lost and I moved onto other figures I was interested in. I didn't see her in my collection again until I bought a legitimate one in September of last year. Lots of rebuying old figures I used to love that month it seems.

The one I bought last year didn't come with a box, and I'm fairly sure I trashed the bootleg's box when I moved house the year after I got her. So sadly no overview of stuff in the blister, but I'll do my best to arrange everything like it was in the box!

As for what she comes with, we have the base figure, her ★Rock Cannon, an extra side hair piece for if you want to display her without her signature flame, her black blade and a hand to hold it, two slouchy/long-sleeved arms, a fluttering cape, her sitting legs, two extra arms, a fist, a bent leg, and an extra front hair piece, and two extra expressions, one empty/defeated (based on a piece of artwork by CHANxCO) and one determined/angry. My favorite is definitely the CHANxCO faceplate, but I surprisingly don't display her with it often.

She also comes with a DVD of the Black Rock Shooter OVA! I adore this OVA, and I especially adore it's limited edition release, as it came with a full storyboard book. As someone who wanted to be a storyboard artist, a complete storyboard of one of my favorite OVAs of all time is an incredible inclusion. Though that's an entirely separate entry in the database, so let's see what this release of the OVA has!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/10/17/2543149.jpeg

Here's what you see when you first boot it, a simple title screen. A pretty thorough selection of subtitle languages to choose from for a DVD that came free with the figure.

The action during the fight scenes is very dynamic, it definitely feels like they consistently drew the gestures before focusing on construction. All of the movements carry a lot of weight behind them and it looks great in motion, you can really tell the team put a lot of love into this project.

"ハグ...しよう."

Now, let's try to recreate the official poses on the back of the box!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/10/17/2543154.jpeg

Holding her cannon and looking into the camera. She has a somewhat intense gaze, doesn't she?

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/10/17/2543155.jpeg

Standing with sword in-hand, like she's quietly sizing up her opponent.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/10/17/2543142.jpeg

Sitting atop her cannon with sword in-hand after a battle. Perhaps she's thinking of her next move?

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/10/17/2543143.jpeg

BRS mid-attack! It feels reminiscent of her last battle with Dead Master in the OVA.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/10/17/2543144.jpeg

BRS looking defeated...
"Yomi... where did you go?"

Now let's try some original poses!
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/10/17/2543145.jpeg

Pointing her sword at an enemy to put distance between her and them. She never really seemed to be on the attack during the OVA, only responding to others' attacks, so I feel her trying to distance herself from an agitated enemy would fit her nature.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/10/17/2543146.jpeg

I tried recreating a pose from the original music video! It appears at around 4:04 in the official upload!

And my favorite way to display her...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/10/17/2543147.jpeg

"RAAAAGH!"
Note: Faceplate is from Nendoroid #180 Puchitto Rock Shooter.

This is a very good figure, but it's not without it's flaws. Maybe it's because it's used, but I find posing with the cannon to be difficult because of how loose it fits in the hands meant to hold it. I couldn't replicate the mid-fight pose exactly like the box art because of that looseness. Otherwise, I don't have any real complaints, and I still love this figure a lot.

What was your first Nendoroid? Or your first figure?

Thanks for reading!

RPG_FAN12810 days ago#85020505Item number 186!? Wow talk about original entry items on MFC. This year I saw my first 7-digit item. Sometimes I wish that only figures were allowed to be entries on MFC. Ah well...
Very interesting read though! Sorry you got hit with a bootleg purchase. I was overly paranoid about counterfeits when I first started collecting. But thankfully it only takes buying a few figures to know the difference between real quality and bootleg. The only time I felt I was ripped off is when I bought a resin statue "NEW" .... but it was not. But hey, maybe the seller didn't mind getting negative feedback for misrepresenting their listing just to make some money.

Thanks so much for reading! Yeah, getting hit with a bootleg purchase so early on in collecting sucked but I was only 11 at the time and didn't have the expertise I do now. If anything, it was a good learning experience (even if it was a very disappointing birthday gift.

ninjablde10 days ago#85000249I also bought a bootleg of her, but on purpose cause at the time i didnt wanna pay the price for a legit one. For awhile i regretted doing that. A couple years ago I walked into a Book-off and there sat an official one. Bought it right away!

That's a lucky find! I've never been to a Book-Off but I definitely want to someday, I'm sure they have a bunch of cool used stuff. Plus I'm sure their book and CD prices beat Kinokuniya by a mile. Thanks for reading!!

Asphroxia10 days ago#84997089Thank you for this post <3 seeing brs content always puts a smile on my face
she's really cute and I love the recognizable checker pattern instead of the old plain nendo base, wish they did that more often nowadays
edit; as for my first figure, it was ITEM #5780 actually whos show I watched around the same time as black rock shooter, of course I didn't know anything about collecting and thus it was a bootleg as well xD but I still cherish it to this day she's held up great over a literal decade!

Thanks for reading!! IKR, I feel like there isn't much talk about BRS nowadays but it's still a favorite of mine, especially the OVA. Also that's a wonderful first pick, her design is super cute and I like how dynamic her hair sculpt feels.

Moomoogirl110 days ago#84994461My first nendoroid was Onadera Kosaki ITEM #198410. I've been a fan of anime since middle school but I always thought figures were just fan service pieces. Then I saw Onadera at a convention stall and peeked that I could change her face. And give her different poses. And that she came with accessories?! The guy at the stall really egged me to get her lol But she was worth it.
Very nice review by the way, she's such a cute little thing. I love her dead eye sulking face the most. This makes me nostalgic for the when the OVA of BRS came out. I remember listening to the song before it came out on repeat too.

Thanks for reading! I haven't watched Nisekoi but Onodera's design is super cute and she makes for an even cuter Nendoroid. Also, can relate to being talked into buying stuff at convention halls. I have Nendoroids of Umi and Nico from Love Live, and even though I adore Love Live, Umi and Nico aren't even my favorite characters. Got talked into buying both at an Anime Expo booth and because I was over the moon about a movie release announcement it worked on me way easier than it would have otherwise, lol.
