☆My Nendoroid Awards for 2020☆☆My Nendoroid Awards for 2020☆Misc

Greetings MFC!(^-^*)ノ~☆°

As the end of the year draws to a close, I decided to work on something fun, personal and a little different. By now, I would typically be typing my end of the year loot article. But as I reflected on my purchases these past months, I realized how much more attention I've been paying to things like paint, sculpt, and accessories of my nendoroids. I had this crazy idea while the American Choice Award nominations and results were running about my socials: What if I had a little “award show” for the nendoroids I purchased this crazy year? I gained more incentive remembering how fun Galablue’s user input MFC Awards were last year.

I collected more than enough nendos and I consider myself a decently knowledgeable collector at this point. I'd be the only judge, but I can confidently explain what makes a good nendoroid good. Plus, it would be a fun project to entertain myself during this stressful time of the year. The idea stuck and ran circles in my head until I decided, “I’m doing this!”

So how did I go about planning this little competition? First, there are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ categories. “Best Sculpt” and “Best Paint”, as well as “Worst Paint” and “Most Disappointing” exist side by side. The nendos are then tallied by their nominations. They receive a check mark () for an award category nominations and a cross mark () when nominated for an unsatisfactory category. All nendos receive a number based on the number of checks and crosses received and, depending on how many award nominations were earned, are then nominated as Nendo of the Year. Please note, a nendo with a low nomination number is not a bad figure. I’m happy with all my nendos and I’d rate the lowest numbered nendo in this project a 7 out of 10. The number merely reflects how well the nendos stack against each other.

There are a total of forty (40) nendoroids in this competition. You can click the list here LIST #141856 to see them all, but don’t worry. I’ll provide plenty of pictures as well. Speaking of pictures, I apologize as they are far from my best work. But I decided they needed to be used as a visual aid foremost rather than look fancy. If there are any spelling errors in the pictures, it's because I was editing them at four in the morning when I couldn't sleep.

Lastly, this article is going to be lengthy. I think we all know if you’re a frequent reader of articles on this site, you like to read! But there’s your warning. Okay, let’s start this shall we? First category is…

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Best Sculpt ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

Winner of this category must be dynamic and push the envelope in terms of intricacy and craftsmanship. Atypical features, such as the mold of Shin-chan’s head are also appreciated. As you can see above, I think a lot of nendos collected this year fall within this category and I may have added more until I realized I already had a good number. Besides, I needed to find the best and limit my pool. After, judging them side by side the best nendo in my collection that best exemplifies sculpt is…

There’s a lot going on with Ozymandias and while his hair may not be as showy as other nominees, I tried not to let hair sway my decision (because boy was I tempted). Including not only his hair, but his outfit and body as well, I think he’s my most dynamic and polished sculpt. Saber is second place mainly because of the awesome work GSC did for her outfit. I really dig the look and it easily impresses me despite being an older nendo. Not pictured, but they even did a good job sculpting her updo, not stooping to crafting it as a shapeless bun. I appreciate that. Sora is third for not his hair alone but also how well GSC replicated his fun outfit in 3D form. I can’t get over his shoes. Remember when Sora had yet to grow into his feet? Good times…

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Best Paint ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

The winner of this category must have a minimum of three colors in their color scheme, be detailed, and have a clean application of paint. They should also have shading of some kind and have excellent paint work on their accessories as well. As you can see, I’m pickier in this category. Those who don't have shading were merely nominated for the finesse of the paint work alone. I can’t tell you how impressed I am of the paint work on Bruno and Yugi. You know how easy it is for even GSC to mess up dotted outfits? But the nendo I believe best deserved this title is…

Now you may be thinking, “How dare you make the King of Heroes third place mongrel!” But putting that aside, I made the decision to not let these two kings blind me with their gold paint. I’m a big fan of gold but I needed to look at details as well. I believe Gilgamesh shines here for how perfectly lined his tattoos are, as well as the little details on his outfit and accessories. This applies to Ozymandias also but he has a beautifully subtle gradient in his hair. Totally deserves second place for that. The reason why crybaby Zenitsu wins this category? Not only is the application of the multiple triangles on his outfit perfect, he has a gradient on his outer clothes as well! I can’t believe I missed that the first time opening him, it’s just so cool and wonderfully applied. The paint on his legs, feet and under clothes are also consistently good and I love that the lines in his hair have not a single overlap in color. So while he isn’t as shiny as the other two, he deserves this title!

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Best Posed ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

The victor of this category is based mostly on function. They need an ample amount of either joints and/or extra body parts to execute multiple poses. They have an edge if they can create a pose that is not shown in the official poses recreated by GSC. But dynamic premade poses are still appreciated. Just look at how awesomely Shinra displays. However, the most posed nendo in my collection is…

Why is Miles Morales number one? Because homeboy can sit. No joke, he can do it by himself if you position his arms like so:

Being able to take a seat makes him my most flexible nendo to date. He also has a very special double jointed neck peg, allowing one to lower his head more so than others. I believe this is something GSC pointedly takes into account when making their Spiderman nendos. Izuku can also somewhat sit and is just pretty solid to fiddle with in comparison to functionality of his first nendoroid. And Tsuyu is here because she has articulation in her ankles! I’ve never seen this in a nendo before and I think it's pretty neat. Jointed nendos kind of stole the show this category but seeing how far jointed nendos have come, I think it’s well deserved.

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Most Accessorized ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

To take this tile, the nendo should have a good selection of extra body parts, a minimum of three faceplates and have four or more actual accessories. My DX versions are automatically disqualified for this category. There were nendos that had about four accessories such as Shinra, but because they were dual parts, I counted them as a unit and not as separate accessories. Meanwhile Tanjiro is here because he comes with his handy bamboo box and it’s actually functional. Many complain that newer nendos are lacking in this department and it’s an opinion I thoroughly share. So the newer nendos that were nominated are ones I feel got it right despite the growing trend. However, it’s no surprise that the three best accessorized nendos I got this year…

...are older ones. Each girl perfectly calls back to a time when GSC was less stingy and, I would dare, really nailed what made a nendo such a strong figure, despite their chibified style. Mami takes the cake in accessories when it comes to flexibility, no question. Gumi and Popura are not very far behind. I think if I were to create a fourth place, the only newer nominee that comes close to these three powerhouses would be Zenitsu. But Zenitsu isn’t really the norm anymore. In a sense, this category became one that heralds the past.

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Best Boxed ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

Seeing as the general consensus seems to be that all nendo boxes are generally nice, the winning box needs to be nicer than all the others. Now I could have pictured all the boxes nominated for this but truth be told, I didn’t want to drag all those boxes out of my closet lol. A tumble of nendo boxes is almost akin to watching a deck of playing cards fall to the floor. But louder. Yeah, I’ll avoid that, thank you. Under the cut are the listed nominees:
View spoilerHide spoilerBruno
Captain America

If you’ve read previous articles, you may know that figure boxes rarely ever impress me. Out of the 40 nendo boxes I opened this year, the most impressive was …

What a cute box!! I was pleasantly surprised when I received it. Seeing as Shin-chan is a classic, it figures they would do something a little different. And I really like it. It was nice to get the warm fuzzies from a figure box for once. Second place easily goes to Deku and his box's exciting comic book design look (pictured in my review article BLOG #46426). Ozymandias takes third because his box has a cool background of Ancient Egypt. But the Promare boxes deserve a shout out for their gradient finish, which is something I barely ever see on nendo boxes. The other nominees have cool patterns and sheen finish effects pressed onto their boxes, over all nice touches!

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Most Beginner Friendly ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

This is a category I thought of from merely being a nendoroid collector for the past two plus years. I think about what would be a good starter nendoroid for anyone ready to collect. I was more eager to create this category when my friend expressed interest in collecting the Fruits Basket nendoroids coming out soon and I shared tips on nendo care and handling with her.

The winner of this category needs to be a nendo that isn’t hard to pose or change parts. It doesn't necessarily have a lot of parts. Archer has been nominated because I think he’s a good starter for a jointed nendoroid. Vocaloid Rin is here because she’s one of the earliest nendos and is fairly simple. I also added nendos that are not only simple to handle, but come with extra goodies, like fun accessories or a decent amount of changeable parts. The most complicated nendo here in my opinion would be Kirishima, but I think he’s so solid and it’s real fun changing his outfit up with his half face mask, I think a newer collector would enjoy that. The most beginner friendly nendo in my opinion is…

Little Popura best exemplifies what I’m talking about. Easy changeable parts, no complicated gimmicks that those new to nendos may get stumped by, and plenty of accessories to show new users just what the nendoroid line can offer. Her along with Marika and Italy can be summed up easily as the most simple and fun.

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Best Dressed ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

Now for the less technical categories. Simply put: I like this outfit the most. They are a lot of nicely dressed characters that I own, but some suit my taste more than others. I do take sculpt into account. Nezuko for example has a really nice detailed lining on her kimono that I simply adore. Meanwhile, Italy is wearing a military uniform I really like and Gumi wears an example of a fun, frilly type dress that I personally enjoyed drawing in high school. But my best dressed nendo is…

I really like Araki’s fashion sense. A lot. So of course two of these three are JoJo nendos... I am obviously a sucker for men showing skin and wearing half jackets.

GSC did an excellent job with Rohan and seeing his official pictures made me instantly change my mind on preordering him. The subtle accents of gold and yellow against the cooler colors are nicely executed as well. And who can say no to Bruno’s titty window suit with his flashy gold zippers? I also really enjoy a lot of the outfits Fate characters wear and I’ve grown quite attached to Archer’s design. It’s not overly fantastic like some other characters in the series, but it still stood out to me, even when I was merely an outside spectator of Fate. I tried to go with outfits that could be worn in public and may turn some heads but not have anyone questioning whether the wearer is in the right time period or dimension.

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Most Cute ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

Most nendos are generally cute, we all know this. But there are some that have a little more omf and make me squee and awww whenever I see them. The nominees here are the cutest of the bunch, but the top three are my cream of the crop, my little darlings, my honey pies and cinnamon rolls…

Yeah, I’m basic and think Nezuku is the cutest thing ever, bite me. But gosh, do I adore Italy. He makes me so happy. And Tsuyu is a great combination of what may typically be considered “ugly” but manages to merge into extremely cute territory. I think Hirokoshi designed her really well and her cute factor intensifies as a nendo.

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Most Anticipated ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

All the nominees of this category were highly looked forward to. Even if I didn’t preorder them, as was the case for Thor, I readily counted down the weeks when they would release and expected to be fully satisfied with my purchase upon receiving them. The winner of this category is the one who best met my already high expectations…

If you are a fan of Inuyasha and like nendos, please get him. Hell, I recommend him even if you’re not the biggest nendo fan. And I knew Toga and Miles were going to be good, and totally didn’t disappoint! Inuyasha best scratched the itch that was my anticipation. It would have been a closer tie with Toga if she didn’t have a splotch of red paint on the back of her uniform.

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Exceeded Expectations ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

Nominees in this category may not have been anticipated and hyped. In fact, only Toga here was initially. I thought because of her factory paint mishap, I would end up being disappointed with Toga but far from it. I’m still genuinely impressed by her in spite of it and am super happy I got her. The rest were not anticipated but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up enjoying them. You could say the nendos presented here are a little special because of that. The one that exemplifies this best is…

I wasn’t blown away by his promotional pictures, I wished he came with his firefighter hat and I didn't bother to preorder him. And yet a voice in the back of my head told me to get him anyway since watching the series was one of my 2019 anime highlights. Searching for him after his release was almost like a chore tbh. But wow, I am so impressed by Shinra. This one pose alone gets the energy and vibe of the original medium so effectively. He’s become a hidden gem apparently (I’ll talk about that later) and I can happily say he’s become a pride of mine. And while I’ve admired Ozymandias for a while now, I didn’t expect to enjoy his nendo this much. I always like walking past him, all puffed up on display. Shinnosuke meanwhile is such a treat. He is mega fun and I’m glad I got him if not only for the lols.

°•Most Disappointing•°ლ(ಥ益ಥლ

And then, there are those that I didn’t even anticipate and yet, they let me down. Feeling a dread of disappointment right after you open and inspect a figure is such an unpleasant experience. This year, only two figures in general met this criteria…

I have a whole section in a previous article detailing what was wrong with Rin. I expect stickiness from an older nendo, but the air bubbles in her hair were terrible, gross, appalling. Even the old school nendoroid stand let me down, it is very difficult to deal with and I’m glad they changed the design. Also the parts for this nendo are kind of loose, probably due to age. A lot of my disappointment can be blamed on the age of the figure but it still disappointed me all the same. Runner up Galo on the other hand is brand new but he was a very obvious paint blunder on his pants. Plus, his left leg kept falling off. This can be fixed with the good ole clear nail poilsh trick, but I expected better of a nendo I just bought, especially since I was starting to think GSC was getting better at quality control again.

°•Worst Paint•°ლ(ಥ益ಥლ

I think you already know the three that’ll be getting this L since I’ve already mentioned all three reasons:

Other nendos acquired this year may have had unclean, bleeding lines or needed more paint in certain areas, but these three were easily the worst.

EDIT: It has come to my attention, that the splotch on Galo's pants is part of his character design AKSJEJUDYEKSLAWYUD HOW DID I NOT KNOW??? Sorry Galo, your leg is still a pain tough.

°•Least Accessorized•° ლ(ಥ益ಥლ
The part of the article where I call out GSC and their trend of skimping out on accessories. I have a few offenders in this category and I’m going to shame them now.

Archer is a little older and I wonder if he was one of the nendos they started this trend with. But if you can clearly recall, there were more nendo nominees for Most Accessorized than Least. Which leads me to believe GSC isn’t completely as forsaking accessoires as it sometimes seems. Still, that fact that I have this many nominated for little accessories, when part of the charm of nendos is their accessories, is still reason for complaint. The most disrespectful of these five are…

Before anyone tries to correct me, I’m well aware Cap has a DX version. But even the standard version of a few of my DX nendos come with more than Endgame Captain America. I’m noticing comic book nendos stopped putting effort in their standard releases, which almost forces the buyer to go with the DX version. I already have another Captain America, so the standard was good enough for me. But I’d like for GSC and Marvel to do better. They easily could have given Archer more swords, it’s called Unlimited Blade Works for a reason. And I feel GSC got a little lazy because Galo’s matoi is so massive and has multiple parts due to the streamers. I swear I don’t hate my Galo lol

°•Most Frustrating to Pose•°(ಥ﹏ಥ)

This category is somewhat opposite of “Beginner Friendly” and is a little unique to figures like nendoroids. Changing parts and poses for this figure is not enjoyable and can dampen playability. Luckily, the nendo here isn’t as bad as other horror stories I’ve read, but she was a pain nonetheless…

Yep, Saber has exemplary sculpt but the mechanics of this super movable body aren’t the best. This is later solved by making the pegged arms ball jointed (Archer has the better super movable body and it makes a world of a difference). Sadly, Saber was a pioneer of this body type so she doesn’t get the luxury. Depending how far I want her arm to bend, it’ll pop out when I move it over. You can imagine the fear I had of potentially breaking off a piece. Basically, Saber isn’t as movable as advertised and is far from beginner friendly. I suspect her newer Fate/Grand Order version is easier to pose since it’s a standard nendo body.

°•Most Boring•°(ಥ﹏ಥ)

Complete opposite of both Best Sculpt and Most Accessorized, this nendo fails in both categories simultaneously. There is only one…

Wait you say, doesn’t Subaru come with four accessories? Again, I count the two creepy hands that pull him into the depths of silence and despair one whole unit. And can you really call his grocery bag a proper accessory? Forgive me if there’s some huge spoiler about the grocery bag in RE:Zero, but it doesn't show up again and reminds me heavily of One Punch Man's grocery bag. Only having that as Saitama's accessory makes more sense...

Reading my complaints, you may think Subaru disappoints me, but I knew exactly what I was getting when I preordered him. Subaru is a main character I actually enjoy but compared to his female counterparts, there isn’t much to be done with him. GSC did their best and his faceplates managed to come out great! I am happy I have him as a fan of the show but you know how some collectors talk about “bonding” with something? I haven’t really bonded with Subaru yet and I changed his faceplate to the current one to try to feel something more towards him. It kind of worked? But he’s still my most boring nendo, and I don’t take any joy saying that. Hopefully, I warm up to poor Subaru soon. He was stuck in GSC’s warehouse waiting to come to me afterall.

°•Worst Dressed•°(ಥ﹏ಥ)

These two basically dress exactly as I daily do, but compared to everyone else, their fits are lacking. Subaru’s outfit has the better color scheme though. I will say, the paint job on both of their clothes is neat and tidy as it should be. I can only imagine how annoyed I’d be if the paint job for these simple outfits were messed up.

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Most Unique ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

And now I’m bringing back the last positive category because I’ll be damned if I end on a negative note. Nominees for this category have something about them that makes them stand out among the crowd, even if they aren't the most pretty or dynamic. For Galo, who has received many cross marks this contest, it’s his awesome hair and matoi.

Inosuke is third runner up for his boar head alone. Shinnosuke is second for his unique sculpt and Thor is the winner because there is only one other nendo I can think of where you can change their body type ITEM #55709, and it's for comedic purposes. Thor's is not, so you can display him with his gut without it being a joke. That’s pretty unique to me!

《《《Most Weaponized Hair》》》

This category and the one after are neutral, meaning the nendos won’t receive a mark for being nominated. I just thought it would be fun to create this category because I definitely got poked a lot handling these guys. The most damaging nendoroid however was…

YES! You read that right, it isn’t any of the spiky hair lads that get to take this title home. I don’t know if it was a factory error but the ends of Rin Tohsaka’s hair were freaking sharp and one strand tore off the top layer of my skin! Shit hurt. I had to very, very carefully sand the ends of her hair down with a nail file. The only other nendo that comes close to Rin’s damage is Sora and even his hair never cut me. If I were less amused, Rin would definitely receive a cross mark, but the fact that I even hurt myself with a nendo makes me giggle more than anything else.

$•¥•€▪︎Most Likely to Rise in Price▪︎€•¥•$

The category where I pretend I know snuff about aftermarket prices. I believe I have some merit here though. I mainly gauged this based off of prices I found on Amazon Japan, followed by Solaris Japan. Solaris is notorious for overcharging so it gives me a good idea on how much a desperate collector would be willing to pay. I didn’t include GSC exclusives here because we all know those rising in price are a no brainer. This also only includes nendo’s that came out in the past six months since I am predicting here. Based on my findings, the most likely to rise in price is…

This is what I meant by hidden gem. He’s going for about 9,000 JPY on Amazon which is crazy, since he’s still retail price here in the states. Inuyasha could have easily won this but he’s getting a re-release already. Nezuko is another one I’m tracking and I suspect she’ll become the next Megumin from Konosuba (speaking of Megumin, I just saw her on AmiAmi preowned in A/B condition for ¥9,380…) Lastly, Toga is rising in price at an almost scary rate, seeing as she only came out last month.

·̩̩̥͙**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ Nendo of the Year ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*·̩̩̥͙

Finally, we draw to a close with the nominees for Nendo of the Year. These five received the highest number of nominations and received no deductions. Under the cut is the equation used for each nendoroid to assess their final score:
View spoilerHide spoiler** Number of each nendoroid's check marks minus the number of their cross marks equals their final score: ( - = score). If they received no cross marks, the number of their check marks is their final score **
Mami: 6
Bruno: (3 - 1) 2
Miles: 6
Popura: 4
Aqua: 3

Gumi: 6
Shinnosuke: 6
Inosuke: 4
Toga: (5 - 1) 4
Archer: (3 - 1) 2
Rin T.: 3

The five were then stacked against each other without previous wins and runner up positions taken into account. I did this to diminish advantages amongst the five and judge them indiscriminately. But there was one that clearly stood out above the rest…

Are you surprised? Not only was he already highly rated using my marking system, my enjoyment and admiration for Ozymandias is the strongest among the finalists. Overall, personal enjoyment and admiration is what pushed these three to the top. I’ve loved what they did with Miles as a nendo since I first saw him, and Mami is a top notch nendo that exemplifies the fun and creativity of her show and nendoroids as a whole. I have complete certainty in my results, everything considered. These three are my strongest nendoroids for the year 2020~!

And with that, we come to the end of my little project. This was honestly very enjoyable and helped me cope these past few weeks. My grandmother died this month, my anxiety has spiked, and I fainted in front of my brother a day before his birthday. Figures the last month of 2020 is still trying to f*ck with me. However, the research, number crunching, taking of pictures and playing around with my nendos has been such a needed release. I’m not typing this last paragraph to gain sympathy or likes, but rather, to better explain how happy I am that you were interested enough to read this very dear project through. Thank you so much. I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did making it.

Now will I do this again next year? Yeah, I just might! Of course, feedback would be very much appreciated if you have any to share. Funnily enough, I still have more nendos coming in this month and I wonder if any would have changed the outcome of this contest. Guess I’ll have an idea when I finally work on that loot article I still need to do! But till I'm up to it, I'm going to take it easy.

Have a good one everyone and stay safe! Let’s take on 2021 together!

It's probably because I just finished watching the 3rd Season today but Cocoa is so adorable in Nendo form!

Oh yeah, Cocoa is a really good one! If she had been bought this year, she would have surely been highly rated in this contest. I got her second hand last year and was surprsed with how much she come with.

Aw I'm sorry you've been back up by work but I glad reading this article was enjoyable. Hopefully, you'll have time to write articles again some time in the future? Especially because it looks like you have a lot of good topics to write about.

You are totally right about the new L making the older one look like a bootleg lol It's like a totally different creature, nendoroids really have come far. And I'm happy to read you enjoyed Rohan and Zenitsu as well, they are so good! Thank you for commenting and sharing. Take care!

L from Death Note is probably my best Nendo from 2020, so cute in his unique sitting pose with his cake, totally outshine ver1 which look like bootleg in comparison. certainly hope GSC re-do Ryuk so that I can pair him with Light against L.

Rohan from Jojo and Zenitsu from Kny came pretty close and they make up my top 3.

Speaking of Bleach, the only reason I got Ichigo was because I am positive they're going to make a Rukia now and I need the iconic duo together! I'm hoping she comes as much as Toshiro did.

They better do! I am holding out for more Bleach nendos, please GSC make it happen!

From my own collection, if I were to pick a "best of 2020" it would be ENTRY #38601.
I've never seen this set before but they look good. Definitely good candidates for customs. I hope the customizing all goes well. Thank you so much for commenting and sharing!

What a fun article! I loved guessing whether I'd agree with each winner or not, and seeing who all would show up.

From my own collection, if I were to pick a "best of 2020" it would be ENTRY #38601. I picked up a sealed set cheap (the extra figure was Mami) and I was surprised by the high quality. Most petites have that cheap sticky plastic look, but I'd mistake these for full-size post-300 Nendoroids. They don't have much in the way of posing, but since my plan is to rearrange a few of them into customs and harvest the rest for parts, I'll end up with a decent range of poses per character.

(No Nendoroid is safe in my hands, lol.)
